This is my favorite casual dining place to go. It is really a blast from the past. The food is typical diner food but very good. The outdoor patio seating is relaxed and never rushed. It is a place for locals to get together for lunch or breakfast and does become a place where everybody knows your name. The prices are cheap by comparison to other restaurants in the area. If you want a BLT, burger, or other typical dining fare this is the place to go. It has been a landmark on the Monterey Peninsula HWY forever. read more

First time coming here and will be last. Sunday mornings are busy for them apparently but when asked about the wait the waitress stated "oh well there is people ahead of you, there is only so many of us, and we still need to clean tables so I can't really say." Then this man with a shaved head looks at my boyfriend and says "We just need to clean tables, it will be 20 minutes or less." It was about 10 which isn't bad but why tell a guest that? Did she want us to leave? We should have left but stayed and ordered. The staff was not attentive at all. After getting coffee, I asked for water twice and my boyfriend asked for more creamer. Never came. Fries are good but the sandwich was sad. Western Chicken was dry, bacon over cooked, and it wasn't anything special. Been going here for many years. Always good service, good food and portions. I recommend pretty much everyone but my favorites lean to the chili verde omelet or grilled turkey melt. The 68 Burger is a close second. Gets a bit busy at peak hours but tables turn quickly and there's outdoor seating too. read more

Went here after seeing the review on Yelp. It's an old house converted into a fantastic little restraunt. We sat on the patio - the weather was great. The owner served us, and he was very friendly and service was great. Wife had the Eggs Benedict and enjoyed them, I had the green chili omlette. It was cooked perfectly - so many places overcook eggs but these were perfect! Prices were very reasonable, we really enjoyed the meal and will visit again if we ever make it back to this area. read more

It's hard to review this place because there are so many contributing factors. The owner (I'm assuming he's the owner because he's the only one that seems to care about anything and the servers tend to act nicer when he's around) I give a 6 out of 5. He's sweet, and you can tell he's trying, he genuinely cares about his restaurant and customers. He's the reason we keep coming back. The servers are a 1, if that. The one with the short blonde hair is so rude and angry its unbelievable, every time we walk in she makes us feel like we did something wrong or we're inconveniencing her. The server that usually wears her brown hair in a pony tail at least smiles every now and then. The servers tend to be very slow and irritable, however, the service time (time from putting your order in to receiving your food) is quite fast. I give the food a 4, it's reasonably priced, and consistent. The mimosas are the best I've ever had (I bartended for 12 years and have been serving for 17) they use really good orange juice and don't skimp on the champagne. We love to sit on their small outdoor patio, but don't mind their quaint indoor seating either. I would recommend this place, just know if the servers treat you like you spit in their face or just ran over their cat, it's not you, they're that way with everyone. read more

Thanks to the other yelpers out there. We just moved to the area, and were sad to leave our old breakfast staple behind. This was our second attempt to find a place, and needless to say we will not have to search any longer. Is is a cute, quaint little spot with good service and GREAT food! The eggs benedict were to die for (the eggs were poached perfectly), and if i had that much desired second stomach I would have easily lept into a bowl of the biscuits and gravy...they looked fabulous. This place was highly recommended by a friend who lives nearby, and the ambiance is nice on the back patio. However, the service was just ok, and the coffee was terrible (ie burnt gas station coffee). The worst part though was that the eggs in the eggs Benedict weren't poached eggs, they were so over cooked it was basically a hard boiled egg on top of the English muffin. Stopped by Toro Place Cafe today for a cheeseburger for the first time in a long while. It was good as usual, but I'd forgotten how great the fries are! Best fries ever. Not those shriveled, twice cooked excuses that have become too common, but fresh fried real russet potatoes! Make sure you ask for the fries otherwise you'll get chips and miss out on those awesome potatoes. read more

This place is OK - not terrible but not quite good either. Been here twice now with groups of 4 and 6. All of the food is mediocre with no flavor or distinguishing characteristics. Farmer brothers coffee sits around burning like an 80s/90s diner. Not their fault and despite many visible traps, the yellow jackets will vex you throughout your meal if you dine outside and it is uncomfortably hot if you dine inside. Plenty alternatives in nearby Monterey, Carmel Valley, or downtown Salinas. The unaffiliated coffee shop next door has good coffee, pastries, and snacks - better off going there to fill up on your way somewhere else. read more

I love this place. I've been coming here for the past 20+ years. As a kid it was always a treat to go to Toro Cafe for lunch. We would get milkshakes and they always dressed them up for us kids with whipped cream and sprinkles. Now I stop in for a relaxing lunch in the patio when doing solar work in the area and love it just as much as I did as a kid. Food is great staff is friendly. Wife and I came here finally after hearing so much about their Jucy Lucy. The place is cute, the service is nice, and it's an interesting stop--especially after seeing this place for so many years. We both got the Jucy Lucy with fries and potato salad. It lived up to its namesake in bad ways. So, first, we get the burger and it's MASSIVE. Infact, it's TOO massive. I don't believe that a burger should be so big so that you have to unhinge your jaw to eat it. A burger shouldn't be a massive slab of ground hamburger with a side of two buns and what basically amounts to a salad. It should be a harmonious blend of meat, bread, and veggies that are complementary and not overpowering one another. Second, I ordered a burger that was medium. What I got back was a mixture of bloody red with some grey and a seared outside. My wife ordered a burger WELL DONE. She had lots of pink throughout her burger. Nasty. The actually ground beef was a bit funny tasting too. I don't know if it's their blend of cuts (typically sirloin or chuck) or the grain, but the ground beef didn't taste good. Finally, the burger was definitely JUICY. It lives up to its namesake. However, this was in a bad way. The juices from the beef totally soaked the bottom bun and made it turn to mush. Infact, the bun was mushy from the start and tore apart. I had to eventually eat this mess with a fork and knife. If they had properly constructed the burger with the lettuce on the bottom and tomatoes on the top, maybe this could have been avoided. In the end, it felt like I had hamburger steak with some veggies and fries. Oh, and a side order of mushy bread too. So, the final bill? $22 not including tip. That was $22 too much. If you decide to check this place out, your best bet is probably their other dishes. I dunno. But, don't go for their "famous" Jucy Lucy. It's just Jusy Nasty. read more

Nice place. Friendly staff. I got the Philly Cheese Steak and grams got the Turkey Club. It was good and simple. Decor is an American Diner in Tuscany maybe. Rustic Diner kinda thing. I have been going here for 3 years now. The staff is fast and helpful but the food quality has really gone down this past year and current year. The last 3 times I went, they burnt mine and my cousins eggs (which we asked for them to be over medium and over hard) but that isn't an excuse as to why they should have been burned. Not only that, but they severely burnt my pancakes to the point where they were completely inedible. I really used to love this place, but I sadly don't think I will be returning. read more

I came from out of town and stopped by at 11:50 am to get some breakfast because I heard how great their breakfasts are. They explained to me that they stopped serving breakfast at 11:30 because they have a small grill. I understand that, but was disappointed because I wanted to try their breakfast. So I ordered a cup of coffee and a cheeseburger and my girlfriend ordered a salad. The cheeseburger was small and the salad a bit mushy. There were also several flies hovering over us which was distracting. Then the bill came and it was $22 for the meal, which was a little pricey. The food was average at best but this is probably as good as Salinas gets. read more
