I came on a Tuesday at around 9:30 and my food was out fairly quickly. I was out by 10 which was perfect because I didn't wanna spend the whole night in the city as someone who lives in Brooklyn. The ambience looks exactly like how I felt Japan did when I went to visit. Of course it had a little American twist but ultimately it did. Give me some sort of nostalgia. I ordered two items that came out to like 20 with tax. I want not paying like 22 which wasn't bad at all and I had the gyoza and their version of the chicken sandwich. 10 out of 10 would recommend, especially since they're open until midnight. If you're in the area and want something to eat before heading home. I would advise this over the McDonald's.

Came here to catch up with some friends and had a great time. The food was solid, and the udon special really stood out. Adding a little bit of wasabi when mixing it together makes a big difference because it gives the dish a nice, bright flavor. The skewers were good too. They don't come out all at once but are served as they're ready, which keeps them fresh. The servers were friendly and checked in often to make sure we had everything we needed. At the end of the meal, they have a fun little game where you can try to win a free dinner by stopping a buzzer at 8:88. It's a cute touch and a nice way to wrap up the evening.

Chicken Karaage. $12. Very tasty version

Short review/recommendations- Gyunabe, Okonomiyaki, Buta Kimchi, Karaage I was at this izakaya a while back with a group. I remember the service being nice and this place was larger than expected expanding pretty far behind where we were sitting in the front. They have a bit more beers on the menu compared to most izakaya, with the only one having more being Juraku, and I went with a Hitachino Nest XH for $13 listed as a Belgian style strong ale matured in shochu casks which was tasty with a good amount of sweetness but not too much. In general, the portions were generous for the price point and the food was excellent with a couple definite highlights. For small plates, we soon got the Purple Sweet Potato Fries for $10 which are listed as being lightly battered with spicy mayo & honey mustard. The fry was a light enough that I could still taste the sweet potato (presumably taro) with the spicy mayo being very nice with it. There was also the Chicken Karaage for $12 listen as Japanese style deep fried boneless chicken thighs which was also good. Nice sized pieces of tender chicken with a light fry. The larger plates came out soon afterwards. Most expensive and absolutely massive was the Gyunabe for $38 with thinly sliced beef, cabbage, lotus root, chives, and chili flakes simmered in chicken broth. There was a generous amount of beef on top and the dish was enough for two people especially with on appetizer prior. It is cooked at the table with them pouring the milky chicken broth on top. Said broth wasn't too salty and the beef was thin so it was nice and tender. If you can't get into Kimura, this would in short be a nice alternative. One of our other preferences was the Buta Kimchi for $22 listed as stir-fried pork belly with kimchi seasoned in a savory house sauce and served with tofu. The pork belly was tender with a slightly sweet and decently spicy sauce which was very tasty with the tofu which had a different texture than normal. The Creamy Mentaiko Udon for $20 with heavy cream sauce, mentaiko (pollack roe,) and onion was also solid. I have strong opinions about this dish and this was solid especially for a more creamier version which is less of a preference. They put a pretty generous amount of mentaiko on top which balanced out the heaviness and the noodles had a good texture. The Okonomiyaki listed as a Japanese savory pancake with grated yam batter and mixed vegetables topped with katsuobushi, aonori, mayonnaise, and savory okonomiyaki sauce was also good. This is available just with vegetables for $17 or $20 with pork belly or seafood and we got the plain version. It came out sizzing with plenty of bonito on top and was mildly sweet and savory with a bit of fishiness. It was solid overall. The Salmon-Don for $24 listed as fresh salmon sashimi served over rice, drizzled with sweet soy, and topped with wasabi, lemon, and radish sprouts was simple and good enough. The salmon quality was nice but there's obviously better places for this dish. The prices are a bit cheaper than many of the other Izakaya and at the same time, they still maintain good quality and good portion sizes. It's not my favorite place for certain dishes but everything was overall good and it's hard to complain when said complaints were mild at most.

We came here for a weekday lunch and there were plenty of seats. I didn't know they had lunch specials but when they showed us the menu, that was definitely what I wanted. I had a Gyu don and because it was a lunch special, I was able to get an appetizer with it - I chose the two piece Karaage which was perfectly crispy outside and juicy on the inside, and a miso soup. This all made my belly satisfied :)

If you're looking for Yakitori in NYC, look no further than Toriya! From ALL of the appetizers, to each and every skewer, the food here is truly exceptional - and the cocktails and mocktails are not to be missed either. The experience is made even better by the amazing service - it blew me away how attentive the team here was during my visit! While you can't go wrong with anything on this menu, you absolutely CANNOT miss the chicken thigh with yuzukosho, the scallop kushikatsu, the hand rolls, or the purple sweet potato fries! I'll be bringing friends soon to try their "7.77 challenge" ... and maybe the endless sake bliss for 1 hour of unlimited sake! You definitely should not skip this spot!!

Street neon vibe. Monday to Thursday sake bottle half off - that's a good deal!! The pretty good ones: - Yakitori - overall above average so worth a try. - Okonomoyaki - not hard to fail, tasty. - Fried Oyster - juicy - Fried Squid - like while squid leg fried, had to cut them, pretty good. The to avoid: - Seaweed Salad - those store bought type. - Tako Wasabi - store bought, something is not right didn't love it. - Grilled Cod Roe - the worse dish, probably the quality wasn't good already, it was also overcooked, dry, tasteless. Came with huge slices of cucumber not sure why. Loved the same we tried!

great lunch special but don't think they offer it anymore. would come back for the lunch special for sure. pretty yummy, especially for like $12. everything else was good but pricey so not as eager to get again. service was good and speedy. it's always relatively empty when i'm there but i am going off peak hours so it's more peaceful.

Everything from the reservation process to paying the bill was seamless. We have a medley of appetizers hot and cold dishes. Great bday for my friend.

This cozy spot is great for date night, happy hour with coworkers, or a dinner with family. They are very accommodating for reservations, and let me sit even during a busier hour when I was 20 minutes late due to traffic. As an izakaya, they serve a wide variety of drinks and skewers, which is plenty for just a small snack, but also have an amazing choice of tapa sized appetizers such as squid, both teriyaki and fried, and main dishes as well. Pictured below are a few of my favorite dishes: -beef tongue: which was grilled to a perfect blend of slight crisp but very tender inside -chicken meatball, chicken skin, and chicken thigh skewers -hamachi collar: masterfully grilled and very juicy -tako wasabi: beware of the spice but well paired with the crispy seaweed strips All in all a must-try spot in the lower east side with a variety of options for all taste buds out there!

Yakitori is clawing its way up the rankings for my favorite types of food groups. Ohhhhh you don't know what Yakitori is? You should have just told me you haven't been to Japan, haha. It's essentially just skewers, typically chicken skewers but has expanded to all types of meats and veggies. My big bro and I walked into Toriya like Godzilla and King Kong ready to DESTROY some skewers. We can both EAT. After walking through a chic minimalist Japanese exterior, the interior was kind of odd. Super dim lighting to the point where I had to turn my phone flashlight on to read the menu like a geriatric, but also had a bunch of neon signs on the walls and music BLASTING. I prefer a much chiller vibe for my Yakitori, but to each their own. Personal preference is beautiful. We went CRAZY. In total, we got 22 skewers and 10 piece gyoza that was actually some of the best I've had this year. See attached pic of that gyoza for your own mental health. The skewers come spaced out one after the other, and you can easily order more as you go which is idyllic. Our favorite skewers were the Kushikatsu Meatballs with tare sauce and the chicken thigh, with the least favorite being the short rib. $12 for a tiny little skewer of mid rib was not worth it. After demolishing everything because we are soldiers of god, the damage totaled up to $125 before tax and tip. No drinks or anything either so lowkey kind of expensive, but also we did get a lot of food so... I'll be back mostly due to the quality of food and how late they are open. This would be a solid place to pop your Yakitori cherry, although I am still looking for a Yakitori spot to really hang my hat on in NYC. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

Whole new Yakitori experience in NYC!! I am so obsessed with their Yakitori everything was well taste and flavors! Especially chicken thighs are great and soft and yummy!! Karaage was a bit luck of taste but they are crunchy and you can dip with mayo. Age-dashi Tofu is amazing exact broth with. We were just excited and ordered too much but we did ToGo and enjoyed next day as well :) their waiters were very efficient and knowledgeable! Good with some group of people you can share and enjoy!!

Known for their meat skewers (yakitori), this Izayaka is open quite late, though they do have their last call around 12:45am. The interior is quite hip and trendy, but also a little dark in the front room booths. There's much more room in the rear. Happy hour is Mon-Thurs 5-7pm, and they've got some nice $1 deals. Bathrooms are surprisingly modern and clean. The staff was pleasant, but kept trying to take our plates even while we were eating. I get that we were eating around closing time for them (we still had about 20min before they closed), but it was a bit rude and off-putting. The food was good, but a little overpriced. The yakisoba was quite tasty and filling; probably goes well with a drink late at night. The skewers were a bit small. Overall, I'd come back, perhaps slightly earlier next time.

After opening a number of successful bars in New York City, including Death & Company and Cienfuegos, DeRossi decided to open a new bar with a focus on rare, new, and unusual craft beer offerings. Originally opening in the St. Marks section of the East Village, Proletariat quickly earned a reputation for being one of the best craft beer bars in NYC. In June 2022, Proletariat moved to a new, larger space just two blocks away on East 7th Street. In addition to the excellent beer selection, the new location also features a kitchen that offers an array of plant-based dining options. I recently visited Proletariat while I was in the Village to see a concert. I arrived a few hours before the show so I could grab some beers and bites beforehand. Proletariat has been on my NYC craft beer bucket list for a while; they have an excellent reputation. There were maybe four other customers there when I arrived; I felt like I was entering a secret craft beer club. I really liked the wolf featured on the bar's logo. It was clearly a reference to the Latin botanical term for hops: "humulus lupulus", which roughly translates as "the little wolf that comes from the Earth". There were 20 impressive beers on draught during my visit. I decided to order a pour of The Drowned Lands Brewery's "Winnow" (Festbier). It was an excellent example of the style: light and malty. Afterwards, I went with a pour of Sante Adairius Rustic Ales' "The Sky and the Sea" (Blueberry Saison). This was a fantastic beer: nice and tart with delicious notes of blueberries. If you're looking for some great craft beer bars in NYC then add Proletariat to your list!
