I used to chill at Loreley back in the early 00s and always had a great time there. It's been a long time since I've been back there. So last weekend I was in the area and was wondering if they were still around and to my surprise they were still open in the same location that I remembered. So I decided to give them a try again after almost 15+ yrs and it was just like I remembered, the food was phenomenal and the beer was amazing! We sat in the back on the bench seating under the open air, which had its charms but also felt a bit cramped. This isn't really a proper beer garden in the traditional sense, more like someone's back patio with bench seating packed a little too tightly together. I love this place! Every year my friend and I make reservations here for the holidays. It's gorgeously decorated, easy to access, not a crowded street and the service is great. This was the perfect to set the mood of the holiday seasons. The backyard is heated and it is the perfect place for groups, place to start off the night or just enjoying Lower East Side. I have seen this places being decorated for fall and Halloween so I am glad I finally got to try it. I had the Rudolph ornament ($22) and my partner had their Cider Espresso Martini ($22), they have many variations of the Espresso Martini. We rolled in at 1pm on a Saturday without a reservation, but the hostess was accommodating and ushered us to the back patio. Seems to get busy fast when the weather is nice (20 minutes after being seated the patio seating was full, so definitely book ahead if you can.) I stopped by Loreley German Beer Garden to check out their Espresso Martini Festival and had such a great time! I've been here about 3-4 different times. This time, I tried a few different martinis: the red velvet (my favorite by far), the Oreo, hazelnut with a Ferrero Rocher on top, and the s'mores espresso martini. They were all delicious, but the red velvet really stole the show, and the Oreo one was a lot of fun with the bits of Oreo mixed in. While enjoying the drinks, I snacked on the pork schnitzel and sausage platter, which definitely kept me full. The wings here are spectacular, and I don't say that much! When we were finally seated, the table didn't even have enough chairs, and when we pointed it out, the staff seemed annoyed and squeezed one person into a corner with no legroom. The service was poor overall--they never checked in to see if we needed another drink or anything else. I ordered rum and was served whiskey, and my medium steak came out well done with no pink at all. There are still a handful of authentic biergartens in lower Manhattan. Loreley is more of a trendy facsimile, but it does the tradition well. We came in on an early October afternoon to get an Oktoberfest celebration in, getting a table in the garden area out back. Service was prompt, friendly, and helpful with questions. It being Oktoberfest, we leaned into the theme: she got a half litre of Schneider Weisse (a dark wheat beer) and a veggie burger. I did an order of weisswurst and, being in the Oktoberfest spirit, a litre boot of Weihenstephan Festbier, while we split an order of pretzels. The Weihenstephan was solid: the kind of beer you could find yourself nursing through a festival tent. The last weisswurst I'd had was in a terminal at the old Tegel airport in Berlin; these pork + veal sausages had a bright hit of lemon and were nearly as good. Conveniently located across the street from my hotel, I was looking for something quick before heading to the airport. Plenty of seating available inside and outside on a Friday night.
