It's been weeks and I'm still thinking about the broth. It had levels of complexity and paired up with fresh noodles and tender beef that melted in your mouth, yeah, there's a reason I'm still thinking about it! I went with a friend who had never had Taiwanese food and I'm a bit sad that 886 was the first experience for her because other places after this are going to be a let down. We split the beef noodle soup, Taiwanese fried chicken and scallion pancake beef wrap. The chicken was also perfection served with an in house honey chili crisp sauce. The scallion pancake beef wrap was good but in a purist who likes scallion pancake on its own. The sandwich and fries were delicious loved the curry flavor on the fries and how crispy the sandwich was. The drinks were also good we got the lychee and the tea cocktail. My friend and I came by here for dinner in the area and were able to get seated right away without reservations. This spot is a young and fun vibe mixed with some modern Taiwanese specialties. First of all, the Bad Idea Challenge ($27) immediately grabbed our attention. The goblet consists of sake, red wine, soju, and coke, which tasted quite similar to a sangria. For the challenge, two people have 6 seconds to finish the entire thing for 2 free sake bombs. We couldn't help but take on the challenge. Even though we didn't finish it on time, the drink was still tasty but light on the alcohol. As for the food, we ordered the Lo Ba Beng ($15), Peashoots with Tofuskin ($18), and Scallion Pancake Beef Wrap ($16). The lo ba beng is delicious from the savory braised minced pork over rice with a perfectly soft-boiled egg and mustard greens. The peashoots were simple, but refreshing when you want some greens. Came because of great reviews and a personal recommendation, but it fell short of expectations. The presentation of the dishes were great, but the flavors on each dish just didn't work well together. The Sourdough Scallion Pancakes were quite underwhelming, and lacked the sourdough taste that the name refers to. It also was quite dry and very very oily. The Beef Noodle Soup was one of the more subpar ones I've had. I was surprised because the restaurant specializes in Taiwanese food. I expected it to be better. Half of the meat was also very cartilage and fat heavy, so there wasn't much lean meat to enjoy unfortunately. The Jiao Ma G Sando had a similar situation to the pancake where it was just very greasy and felt a bit gross to eat after a few bites. The flavors also just did not go well together. The sauce for the fries was also quite bland. The service was also not attentive, which was odd given that the restaurant had just opened and we were the only table occupied for most of the time we were there. I've been watching Eric Sze on Youtube for the past couple months, which led to me wanting to try 886. The ambiance is interesting; the tables and chairs are reminiscent of random Taiwanese restaurant/street vendor, but the lighting gives it the feeling of a bar. 886 is more of a place to chill and catch up with friends over good food and drinks as opposed to a "fine dining" experience. This is not going to be the most authentic Taiwanese food, but it aligns with Eric Sze's view about authenticity (Disclaimer: I could be completely wrong; I don't know him personally. I just watch a lot of youtube videos). He doesn't believe that authenticity is necessary for a dish to taste good. Overall, it was exactly what I thought it was going to be. It was not the best Niu Rou Mian (beef noodle soup) and lo ba beng (lu rou fan/braised pork rice) I've ever had, but it had the right flavors with slight twists and tasted good. The beef noodle soup came with beef tallow that I could use to adjust the depth and flavor of the broth. The lo ba beng was tasty, and the slight fattiness of the pork complemented my Taiwan beer well. The biggest gripe I had with 886 was the service. Our waiter spent the whole hour I was there talking to two girls, as I waited for someone to ask me if I wanted more drinks. One of the groups I'm in was at this restaurant a good while back as a happy accident. We were originally across the street at Kimura but as the wait was going to be 45 minutes or something similar for our big group, we decided to go here instead which worked out well as we had both heard very good things about this place. The place was busy as it was around 6 or 6:15 or so and the staff was rushing all over but they were still friendly. The seats were bit uncomfortable and quite close together but they do with the space they have and it's St. Marks so some of this is expected. I think I might have had the non-alcoholic version of the winter melon tea but I don't remember. The lighting inside is dark so many of my photos came out pretty bad so I like to give thanks to a certain someone for allowing me to use his. We shared a lot of dishes though I'll be discussing my favorite first. The Zhu Xie Gao/豬血糕 with house-made pig's blood cake, garlic, chili, Thai basil, and cilantro for $15 was probably our favorite dish or tied. I've had this prior at only a handful of spots and I think I remember requesting it as I rarely see it. This is a Taiwanese night market staple and they make a very good version here. The cake had a perfect chewy texture from the sticky rice with a good hit of chili and garlic and I would highly recommend it with the portion size being decent also enough to share. The most popular dish here is probably the Lo Ba Beng/滷肉飯 with shredded tender braised pork belly, soft egg, mustard greens, and koshihikari rice which is $15. There is a generous amount of pork with the bit of salty sour mustard greens being a good touch. The egg was pretty similar to a ramen egg with good richness with my only complaint being that the rice could have used a bit more flavor from the fat of the pork even though it was very good quality. Largest of the plates was the Three Cup Chicken/三杯雞 with bone-in chicken leg, ginger, and Thai basil for $18. They gave it to you with the pot cover still on and instruct to wait a few minutes. When the top was removed, the chicken was still boiling and the aroma wafting from it smelled delicious. Nice tender chicken and a good balance as I find some places at either way too much garlic or are too sweet and this was just right. The rest of the group loved the Scallion Pancake Beef Wrap/牛肉捲餅 with sourdough scallion pancake, shredded beef shanks, chili oil mayonnaise, hoisin, and cucumber for $16 a bit more than me. This came with four pieces with the last piece being much larger which makes it a little bit awkward to split but I don't mind. This shank inside while sparse was very tender and the pancake had a great texture with a good mix of flavors though personally I wouldn't have minded a bit more chili oil so the cake was my favorite. The Sacha Black Pepper Beef/沙茶牛肉 with ribeye, a choy, and onions for $19 was tasty with tender beef though there was a lot more veggies than anything else. Not too salty and just well flavored but again they could give more beef. The Fly's Head/蒼蠅頭 with garlic chives, ground pork, chili, and fermented black beans for $17 was solid. This is also available vegan which is a nice touch and makes sense as the primary flavor in this dish is said chives and the fermented bean. I wouldn't order this as your only dish or as the solo main as it's so strongly flavored/a bit salty but that's always the case with this dish. The price was also reasonable for the quantity. The Oyster Omelette/蚵仔煎 with a choy, wok egg, Thai chili, and Thai basil for $15 was fine though it's hard to just go by my opinion because I'm never the biggest fan of said dish. The rest of the people liked it with the sweet chili and I had some of it and it did taste good. Just OK was the Handmade Shrimp Cakes/月亮蝦餅 with gulf shrimp, ground pork, and sweet and sour sauce for $15. There was a bit of chew from the cakes with a light bounciness. These were fine though I would get other dishes for a buck or two more not to mention their signature which is literally the same price for a lot more food and quality. Outside of the two beef dishes, the proteins were plentiful in every dish we had here which is saying something at this price range. They could honestly probably charge an extra 5$ here and there just because it's on St. Marks and get away with it because of the good quality and I appreciate that they don't. We managed to get early seats just after they opened on a beautiful Saturday. I first saw Eric Sze's food on YouTube and was excited when I saw the sign for 886! The interior is humble but stylish. The restaurant is shotgun style and narrow but we didn't feel too crowded. Service was oddly paced as my entree came out quite a while after my company's. He ordered the Taiwan beef noodle soup which was rich and nourishing, but if left to wait for my food it would have become cold as we waited. We started with the sourdough scallion pancake-- a real sleeper as the flavor and texture surprised us in the best of ways! Next came the Taiwan beef noodle which was unctuous and piping hot. When the loofah and clams finally came out they were perfect. Briny, bright, comforting, and the textures were just right! Always love trying Taiwanese spots! Grateful they don't seem to have super long lines anymore. Came in as a party of two on a Saturday night around 5:30 and it was mostly empty. And prices were quite reasonable! We ordered a lot and still came in under $80 pre-tip. The Notorious fried chicken was amazing - juicy and crispy. Also loved the loofah and clams - the clams were larger and juicier than usual. My husband loved the crispy tofu - the Taiwanese sausage fried rice and scallion pancake were pretty good as well. Our only complaint was that so much of what we ordered was fried and had five spice. It was probably just an issue with what we ordered so would love to return and try some of their other dishes! read more

886 is my Guhguh's favorite Taiwanese restaurant in Manhattan. For you dorks who aren't Bilingual, Guhguh (哥哥) means "big bro" in Mandarin. Guhguh is from Taiwan and is the most critical reviewer of Asian food I've ever met in my life, so when he said he liked this place I knew it was about to go crazy. We walked in through the neon lighting and Taiwanese posters plastered on the walls, and were seated in these tiny plastic stools that brought me straight back to my time in Vietnam. Oh you haven't been to Vietnam? Oh, okay. Guhguh and I had a FEAST that went as follows: Three-Cup Chicken, Sesame Noodles, Fly's Head, Taiwanese Sausage, Scallion Pancakes, Beef Noodle Soup, Sacha Black Pepper Beef, and the Popcorn Chicken. It was actually so much food it was crazy. This was the most full I've been since Guhguh and I got triple pork at Orozco's in Puerto Rico. You ever been so full you feel your stomach expand? Guhguh's favorites were the Three-Cup Chicken and Sesame noodles, while mine were the Popcorn Chicken and Sacha Beef. That Sacha Beef was one of the best stir fry's I've had in a minute. A fantastic meal for "almost authentic" Taiwanese food, according to Guhguh. I love this place. I love my Guhguh too man. The best food buddy I could ever ask for. Food was really good and would have given this place 5 stars but the prices were really higher than I would expect if I were eating in Taiwan, but then again, you are paying their rent. I came with my Taiwanese buddy so I was in good hands in what to order. We ordered pickled cucumber salad, pea shoots without tofu skin, lu rou fan (lo ba beng), red yeast ribs and fly's head. All the food was really good but probably would skip on the cucumber salad next time. The outstanding dishes were the fly's head which has garlic chives (I love this veggie) and the red yeast ribs (so tender, plenty of flesh and the red yeast was soo good). The lo ba beng was pretty good but still the think the best I have ever had was in Taiwan in much smaller bowls. But this dish was solid! I love that their is a place now in NYC that serves us good Taiwanese food. I'm so glad I visited and will definitely be back! read more
