2016 Yelp 100 Challenge Review #78 I always teeter totter between three and four stars with Torchy's Tacos. I mean don't get me wrong the tacos are always delicious ( I generally stick with Mr. Orange and the Brushfire) but the price point is a bit high. One day, I will step out of my usual and try other varieties. The food quality is generally consistent across the Torchy's that I have been to whether in Dallas, Houston or Waco. I haven't been to any in Austin. However, here the beans and rice combo was sub par. The rice tasted a little over done. The customer service was fine. The wait was a little longer than ideal but I will wait for fresh food anyday. I would have given this place four stars had the beans and rice been on point. I can't give it a 3.5 so I am rounding down. The restrooms were clean and so was the dining area. I am not sure this experience would pull me back in when I am passing through town so I may return but it likely wouldn't be on the top of my list. read more

We love Torchy's! It's a great casual place with good freshly made tacos. There is something for everyone and they will allow you to add or delete items in a taco. There's everything from Tex-Mex to Texas Country to Continental Mexico. I love the breakfast Tacos. Servings are large and the sauces are great. Dine inside or outside and help yourself to refills on drinks. You stand in line to order but they bring the food to you. There's almost always a line but it moves fast. read more

Apparently it's ok to blatantly discriminate against customers. Went here with my bf who is a little person. Since he's not able to sit in the seats at the bar I go up to order us two drinks. The bar tender asks who the other drink is for. I say It's for my boyfriend over there and point to him. He tells me he's going to need to see both of our IDs. So I had to walk all the way back to the table to get it. He then proceeds to look at my ID for about 2 seconds but spends a minute and a half inspecting my boyfriend's ID and finally refuses to accept it. My boyfriend is almost 30 years old. Didn't want to make a scene, but I couldn't even eat the food because I was so upset. read more

I was so excited to try this place! I was so disappointed! I had the fried avacado taco and my 2 girls had bean and cheese and rice. For an appetizer we had the queso and chips. The queso was pretty good. We didnt get enough chips to finish it though. My taco was so bad! After 2 bites i threw it away. The tortilla was very cold. It was flavorless aside from the grease from the avacado. I thought these tacos were supposed to be big... they were tiny! My girls poured the extra queso in their tacos to give them flavor. Usually when I go to Waco I leave again fairly quickly to get back to Austin, and then this last time I realized there was a Torchy's right by where I was going. I love Torchy's in Austin and San Antonio, so I went and stood in the lengthy lunch line to get an Independent, some street corn, and an iced tea. The line took a while because I had hit the lunch rush, but it was worth it. My server was good about my allergy issues and gluten is very easy to avoid here. My food arrived quickly and was perfect, the environment was mellow, and now I have a spot to grab food in when I come to Waco. Yay Torchy's! read more

While visiting Waco, my husband and I have now been here twice within the week! We came here once for lunch and again for breakfast and both times, the food and service were excellent! For lunch, the fried chicken taco was our favorite! So good. The chips and queso were also very good. read more

I always try to avoid eating at places that I can eat at home in Austin. But this is Torchy's. And I was in Waco. And it was breakfast time. I think exceptions can be made to my rule. We tried their secret menu breakfast taco The Jack of Clubs, which was so good and can hold it's own against the Dirty Sanchez. The tortilla strips were perfectly crunchy, the fried egg was perfectly runny and the sauce was perfectly spicy. Yum. read more

I'm from Austin so I've eaten Torchy's many times before. When this place opened it was a mess and it took them a while to work all the problems out but now their good to go. It can get really busy around lunch time so if you plan on dinning in give yourself plenty of time and if you plan on getting your food to-go I'd recommend calling your order in ahead so you can skip the line and pick your food up at the bar. Also, the entrance and exit is a really bad layout. There is only one way to go in or out so if the line is out the door (which is typical around lunch/dinner) you half to navigate through a crowd of people when you leave. read more

Though most renowned for its tacos and food items, Torchy's pops should not go underrated. Their custom drinks are like all your favorites, but better. Döppelganger is my personal favorite because its like if Dr Pepper and well, more sugar had a baby. Torchy's has both indoor and outdoor seating, both of which provide ample space to enjoy your meal. No, not everything on the menu is spicy. The queso was delicious and the pork carnitas were pretty good but the corn tortillas they came on? Cold. It was kinda like it was grabbed out of a big package of corn tortillas and thrown straight on the plate. It needed to be heated on a griddle with some oil maybe or at least put in the microwave! You'll definitely need the salsa for the taco just to get past the dryness and thickness of the cold corn tortilla. They still tasted good so if I could give 3.5 stars I would but I don't want to hype this place up even more than it already is if they don't have the decency to heat up your tortilla. read more

Walked out without service. I've never been to this location and do not plan on returning. I came in mid afternoon after the lunch rush but was still met with poor service Which is becoming more often the case as this chain gets bigger. There were five people behind the order counter but only one taking orders. The other four were rudely staring at, and commenting on patrons including myself As I waited in line.I can only assume that my food would have taken far longer than I had to spare, so I left. As an added bonus that neighborhood has major construction and plenty of traffic, making this visit that much more annoying. I'll stick to my normal stores in Austin. I was looking forward to this meal, I guess I will head on over to In N Out where the service is consistent regardless of store. My advice is, if you are heading to this store on your way to Austin just pass it by and hit one of the Austin locations. read more

The place was packed & loud.. When you enter you order what you want then you get a number and find a place to sit and put your number on the stand that's on the table.. I ordered 3 tacos.. They were really good & fulfilling.. 2 were breakfast tacos and the other was shrimp my shrimp taco was like 4.25 and the breakfast were like 3.25.. Then I got a sweet tea, which was bomb (if you haven't noted I love sweet teas) people we were with also order chips and queso which were really good. My husband got the trash taco but it wasn't really trashy only a chicken strip with cheese and a lil lettuce but the part is tasted was seasoned nicely. It took them no more than 8 min to bring out the food for the table.. Because it is like an hour away I wouldn't recommend to Killeen people cause you can find tacos like this in Killeen at sonic but if you are in the Waco area then it's worth a visit if you like tacos and sweet sweet tea .. The tables are built for I would say 4 people.. It was six of us so 2 of us had to sit at the 2 person bench because space wasn't available but it was cool tho hair wanted to note that they only have 2 big table for groups read more

My wife and I were in Waco to visit Magnolia Market and this was where we had our first dinner after a long day of driving. OMG, I will dream about this place for a long time. She had a "trashy" Trailer Park and I had the Green Chile Pork tacos. Probably the best Tex-Mex we've ever had. The queso dip is absolutely to die for. We ended up eating here two days later for lunch and found it to be equally amazing. Service is fantastic and the place is clean and inviting.
