Velvet Taco is always a 5-Star (sometimes just 4) review for me. A few months go they inflicted the "Bowl-Replaces-Weekly Taco Feature" fiasco on us adoring fans, but thankfully brought the WTF back, and I returned as a faithful customer... But yesterday during my weekly visit, my wife and I were very disappointed to discover the menu has been entirely revamped! Gone are our favorite tacos! No Birria, no Korean pork, no Fish'n'Chips, no Salmon... Half the dips for the chips are gone as well. I'll probably still come for the WTF each week, but extra visits for my faves will likely stop as my faves are gone. There are only 10 taco choices left on the menu now. Sad. I guess Mod Pizza next door will go back into my lunch rotation and start getting regular visits from me again (It was a weekly stop for me until Velvet Taco thrilled me with their exciting form of taco). Hopefully, like the WTF, the other tacos on the menu will return if enough VT fans complain and plead again. read more

Ordered Velvet Taco and was so excited to finally try it! I ordered the Quesa Birria duo with Elote and chips, and a red velvet slice for dessert. My first, second, and third bites were all tortilla, so I opened up the tacos to find that there was barely any filling in the tacos. These were also the most flavorless birria tacos I've ever had in my life. The consomé tasted like week old broth, and the elote was just absolutely disgusting and cold. The only thing that was worth the entire meal was the red velvet cake. Holy cow that slice was amazing! 100/10! The caramel sauce was sooo heavenly! That is the only reason they're receiving two stars instead of one. This place prides themselves on bold and vibrant flavors, but you'd find a similar flavor profile on the Taco Bell menu. read more

I'm a big fan of fusion, so I will eat here again the next time I'm passing through Waco. In fact, we're now planning to stop here again tomorrow on our way back to the Austin area from Dallas. Two highlights: 1) We're not vegetarians, but the Mediterranean Mushroom taco was really amazing. It was one of four tacos the two of us tried. We both thought it was the best of the bunch. And we will both order this on our return trip. 2) Their ranch water (cocktail) was outstanding. I had the grapefruit version. They added a fresh slice of grapefruit, which was a nice touch, and served it with a grapefruit flavor Jarritos instead of Topo Chico . It was honestly better than some of the ranch water cocktails I've had in high-end steakhouses. We tried three other tacos. Spicy Tikka Chicken, Korean Fried Rice, and a Fish 'n Chips. Those were 3 1/2 to 4 star tacos but could have been five star with some adjustments. The first one was not spicy (as labeled). The second was not remotely Korean, nor was it Mexican (pineapple on a taco?). And regarding the third, who puts honey mustard on fish 'n chips? And the "chips" (french fries) were julienned potatoes that were not crisped up in the least. They looked steamed. To be fair, though, they were pretty good tacos. We enjoyed them, though they certainly have room to continue adjusting their recipes in order to blend Tex-Mex with specific international flavors in a manner that doesn't introduce additional, competing flavors that don't belong in the mix. But look -- it's a big menu. You'll have no problem finding something that you've never had before that you really like. And that makes this a great culinary experience. They may not have a wait staff (you order at the counter) and you may not love the ambiance (you can see their open storage area in the back corner). But it's still a food destination. If you find yourself in Waco, you should swing by and give it a try. read more

The food is tasty, but I have to admit, it just a lot of randomly tasty food placed on a tortilla. What I mean by that is , a delicious kobe beef or tiki masala, and instead of having it over rice or with a potato, it's just with a tortilla instead. Some people find that cool. This was my first time trying. I've been wanting to for months. They have a drive thru which was convenient. The only reason I took a star was there was no line and I still had to wait 20ish minutes for my order. BUT... the tacos were excellent. Like amazing flavor profile. I got the tikka chicken and the brisket with the crispy cheese tortilla. The brisket slightly wins just because I don't feel the tortillas are homemade. So crisping it really added more flavor. But truly very tasty. I also tried the regular queso. Also really good. I'll be back to dine in and try the Thai queso, and maybe a couple other tacos.
