I went to Baylor University and would frequent La Milpa for my late night food needs. Recently I was driving from Austin to Dallas and decided to stop halfway in Waco and check out my old taco spot. Since I went there they have upgraded the setup and now have a good amount of covered seating and a television (used to be a projector). Main thing I recommend is their Agua de melon, I actually hated melon before drinking this and it single handedly made me appreciate melons. It is a generously large cup and so cold, refreshing and sweet. Sometimes I would order 2 because its that good. Tacos were better than I remembered with al pastor tasting well marinated and corn tortillas absorbing a lot of flavor. Not pictured was the chicken quesadilla I ordered which was and always is extremely filling and delicious. I would recommend asking for some extra salsas if you order the quesadillas but for the money such good value. Last thing I will say is the service is incredible, one of the women that used to serve me was there and she is incredibly nice, helpful and just adds to the overall great experience here. I'm born and and raised in Waco. Used to go to the daycare that was down the street so believe me when I say this place is something. I've had really great memories from here and the food was great. Today was not it. But let me tell you why.... If you're not Hispanic they will try to get over on you. Eat your food there. Do not take it home. Check your receipts as well. The meat will be old and dry because they assume that you don't know what type of meat you ordered or they think you are too drunk to tell the difference. Definitely a hidden gem! It's kind of hidden away in a corner of a parking lot but there is lots of parking. They have a patio area where you can sit and eat your food covered in shade. My friends and I have come here pretty regularly for the last 4 years (once or twice a week at some times). It's fast, open late, inexpensive, and delicious. The owners, both present and past, have never been anything but kind, and they're a big part of why we keep going back. I haven't tried all of the tacos, but my favorite are the al pastor or barbacoa on corn tacos. Others have told me lengua is really good too. The nachos are HUGE; I usually get barbacoa as the meat on it and share with the people I eat with. I also love the cubana or the torta; I like the torta more but that's because the cubana also has ham in it which, to me, makes the sandwich a little too salty. Cubana is definitely more filling though (because of the extra meat). The elote is great too. My fiance, who is a Baylor alumna, told me that La Milpa has been around for as long as she can remember, and in the same spot (near an auto body shop a few blocks away from campus). She told me that this place was one of her favorite food places in Waco, and after trying it for myself for the first time, I can see why! The meats are very well done; seasoned and marinated well. We ordered pastor, barbacoa, and carne asada--all of them, solid. The tacos come with cilantro and a slaw of some slaw on top. We added grilled onion for for a little extra. I also like the elote. And no, not all roasted corn in a cup are created equal. Roasted corn (which they make on-site, me believes), crema, butter, cilantro, lime... You add your own red pepper and hot sauce and just go to town on it. Also a good size. Granted, it's not healthy by any stretch of the imagination, but bite me--it's delicious and it's not i eat this stuff everyday.
