LOOK!! I'm hungry and this place hit the spot for me! After several recommendations, this place did not disappoint. This was fine in so I had a chance to meet the staff. At first they thought I had a concern with the food when I asked for a guy who worked here. Miscommunication, so after sorting things out, they found out I was only here to try something new. One of the ladies pointed out some top sellers while the other gentleman cracked jokes. I truly felt like a tourist in Memphis. Not sure that's a good thing, LOL. This spot has been hit or miss these years I have lived near it. More hit now than miss though! These guys have turned around and in the last year or so become very efficient! Well, young lady at the window didn't say a single word to me until she returned my debit card... "Here you go, will you pull behind that truck?" Obviously they have a timer at the window. I also requested hot bbq sauce on the sandwich, instead the regular bbq sauce. They give me a packet... sometimes they will put the hot bbq sauce on the sandwich but the last few times it's been this. The young lady needs to be taught some manners.... I went to the new location in Cordova tn. CC and Dominique greeted me from the curb and waved me in they were very courteous. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese sandwich and a 1/3 rib rack dinner. The store is beautiful and service was quick. The food was not good. The breakfast sandwich was on a bun instead of toast. The ribs were leather. This happens if you cut all the fat off and don't keep the meat moist. I think I will just stick to chopped shoulder sandwiches and cheeseburgers when I go back. Tops was family owned for a very long time. Service was great, food was good, prices were reasonable. As usual when restaurants change hands, new owners make changes. All of the old-time employees are gone. Service is adequate usually, but nowhere close to the level of excellence it was. Facilities are upgraded somewhat, but it looks more like a freshening up for resale than serious upgrade. Prices are significantly higher, not all of which can be blamed on Covid. Food quality is noticeably lower. Food quality always made up for any shortcomings in the past. You could depend on Tops for excellent BBQ with only an occasional hiccup, and even then it was good. That is not the case now. The Berclair location on Summer NEVER has fresh,hot fries, no matter what time you stop there. Always warm at best, sometimes cold, straight from under the heat lamp. If you like hot fries, go to the Summer/National location, The food there is 50-75% better at all hours of the day. I live between the two locations, and used to eat at Tops 3-5 times each week for the past 20 yrs. Fast, convenient, and good. Now, service, cost, and food quality take me elsewhere. I love Tops, but now can no longer brag on them. They are adequate, at best I keep hoping they will improve, but it seems they only go further downhill. It hurts to watch a Memphis landmark slide into mediocrity, and oblivion. read more

After waiting in the drive through for 15 minutes and getting to the order box, I was told they were closed--it was 8:45. 15 minutes before their published closing time. No explanation or apology. For that matter, they acknowledged me at the drive through order box only after I repeatedly tried to get their attention. It's sad this is the service we are getting accustomed to. read more

When I got home after pick up, I discovered that the order included the wrong sides and the ribs were so dry that they must have been recycled from days earlier. Complete garbage. I kept hearing about this glorious hamburger... Saw pics of, and it looked amazing. A Memphis sandwich Instagram site praised it. I had a bad feeling when entering the place. It was filthy. Sticky floors, multiple flies buzzing around. AC vents leaking on the floor and tables. Incredibly slow and not very welcoming staff. But hey, if the food is good, I'm not that picky. Well, I'd trade this for a Sonic burger in a heartbeat. I'm not sure their method of preparing these things, but the bottom bun holds the condiments, lettuce, tomato, etc. For reasons unknown to me, the bottom bun was cold as hell and soggy! It's as if they premade the bottom bun and refrigerated it. That's all I can assume. I'm telling you it was COLD. Horrible experience. My stomach wasn't too pleased with my decision either. Everything you've heard about their cheeseburger is true. If I could give a 6th star to a specific food item, this would be it. That seasoning is phenomenal and while I was supposed to be sharing the cheeseburger and brisket with my boyfriend, I snarled at him, allowed him to take only one bite, and then told him to stick to the brisket. But I digress. The fries get 1 star. Heck, I'd give it no stars - I just wasn't a fan. It reminded me of those "curly" fries (that look more like dents than actual curls) that you find in the frozen food section. The baked beans were OK, not phenomenal, and the brisket, while actually very good, paled in comparison to that glorious cheeseburger (which is why I told Andy he could have the whole brisket - aren't I sweet?). Anyways, the reason I'm stuck on only 3 stars is because the cashier who took our order was the rudest woman I have ever met in my entire life. Complete with a blonde mullet and multiple ear piercings, she reminded me of the mean grandmother that lived down the street growing up. She was impatient, surly, and let out very audible sighs when I didn't spit out my order without hesitation (a thousand apologies for pausing when I was picking out my side items). I dropped in the Friday before Christmas just to grab a burger...yes, Tops probably has one of THE best burgers in Memphis...for lunch. The place was jumping. The drive-thru line was around the building and there were several customers inside. The staff didn't miss a beat! They got the food out right and fast. The best part? They were all smiles. Maybe it was just the holiday vibe, but seeing them all working and smiling and laughing made the day better. read more

The ribs just melts in your hand but not too messy for a white t-shirt. I ate the ribs plain because of my food allergies and never regret doing it this afternoon. This review makes me very sad. Tops was my favorite barbecue. I was even a Facebook fan.I've been going to this location for about 30 years. I don't know anything about the other locations. Every time I pass through Memphis, I used to always pick up at Tops on Summer. This past Sunday Ended by a relationship with tops forever Something has really changed with this location. I'm very concerned about how the management is treating the food, because there was something very wrong with the pulled pork barbecue. I don't know how to describe it, other than it was crunchy and difficult to eat like it was previously frozen and actually old. It almost seemed as if it was several days old and they still served it. The beans have changed, it seems like there's a lot of curry in them now. The slaw, which used to be the best in town, seems to have been completely changed and is really terrible. I've had stomach problems for two days because of it. Sometimes a bad meal can be forgiven, but this really seems so bad that I'm not going back. I don't understand when people treat a legacy business with disrespect, and let it fail. I am disgusted about the 1/2 rib plate I ordered. They were cold and were thrown in the container without any paper liner. The bbq beans were burnt and more of a refried bean consistency that was scraped off the bottom of whatever they were cooked in. The cup was only filled halfway also, but that's ok because they were horrible and inedible. They didn't include my bun either. I usually go to the Tops Berclair location but they were closed for some reason, I will never go back to 3353 Summer Avenue Tops again. I will never step foot or anyone else I know into that filthy place. First off the staff was cursing and very loud and obnoxious. I waited 35 minutes for a barbeque sampler. Items that they should have ready. Also one of the employees went outside the door and smoked a cigarette, came back in and started fixing orders, no hand washing or sanitizer.
