i had a bad experience with them. we told them we were only moving a few pieces of furniture-unfortunately they did not believe this despite the fact they came and did an estimate. on moving day they came with a big truck and were not pleased that in actuality we were only moving the few pieces of aforementioned furniture-and it became unpleasant to deal with them- although the actual movers were polite. in all fairness this was a few years back. read more

2.90 stars. Hello, I write this review for Top Hat Movers, based in and around Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, NY. The owner/operator conducted negotiations over the telephone and text messaging. Two single pieces of furniture moved on two separate occasions. Negotiations were brief, specific. The owner/operator provided suggested tipping rates for the movers. The movers arrived at the pre-arranged times. Very friendly. Care was taken to protect the furniture, on each occasion. However, on the last occasion, I was required to travel with the movers to arrange for pick up of the piece of furniture. On completion of packing, there was no room for me and one of the movers to travel and, thus, we needed to take separate transportation via cab. In conclusion, the furniture was successfully moved on both occasions. I inquired as to the happiness of the movers with the owner and they stated that they were very pleased with the owner/operator and the working conditions. In my dealing with this person, I found him to be very personable, friendly and willing to negotiate. I am, however, discouraged that this is a professional business and the business was not conducted in a professional manner. Therefore, on the basis of my experiences with this company, I must provide a less than ideal review. Thank-you. UPDATE: I have received a note from the owner/operator explaining the situation in greater detail, apologizing and offering to pay for my expenses. We were hesitant when they started wrapping up all of our cheap, Ikea furniture (since our previous move was a drawn-out, over-priced disaster) but they still managed to move our entire apartment in 2 hours flat, with everything carefully wrapped up to avoid dirt and damage. I decided to hire Robert and his crew based solely on Yelp reviews and I am so glad that I did. From our first conversation on, Robert was incredibly responsive and friendly; he explained everything thoroughly; his pricing was more than fair. Over the next several weeks, he checked in with me to confirm and was just generally a pleasure to work with. On the day of the move, Robert's crew of three were prompt, friendly, professional, and most importantly, very careful. They took time and care to talk to me, and to each other, about where furniture would go before moving it--this was particularly important since it was an in-house move. They managed to fit all of my kitchen/living room furniture into my bedrooms (so that the floors could be re-done) while still allowing us access to the bedrooms, no small feat. They took great care not to damage any of our belongings or our walls. As New Yorkers, we have just come to accept that all of our service providers are going to do a rushed, shitty job; that we will pay too much and get too little; and that we will have to fight with whomever we hire just to get the job done competently. I am compelled to write my first Yelp comment after my experience with Top Hat. They moved us 3 years ago and were really good. I went back to them this time to load a POD for an out of town move, I am blown away by how easy it was. Andre and his crew are careful experts. We let them pack our nicest things, the time dedicated to that is well worth it. They are way better than you, let them do it. It makes everything work better. Davie was a magician packing the POD. He literally saved us thousands of dollars by fitting so much in. We would have left so much on the streets of the west village without him. 4 bedroom 4th floor walk up done in 3.5 hours with 6 guys. Reserved a truck with 4 movers on short notice. They showed up on-time, worked fast and efficient (5th story w/ busted elevator to 4th floor walk-up). All of our furniture was securely wrapped- and everything arrived intact, including the dishes I had haphazardly packed. Guys were a pleasure to work with and this was a smooth transaction all the way. Reasonable rates even after a hefty tip that they more than deserved. Had me sipping margaritas by noon on move-day. I've moved in Brooklyn more times than I care to think about, and the experience with Top Hat was by far the best. Robert (the owner, I think) lets you know exactly what to expect. As Stephen M. said, he does over-communicate a bit, but that's fine by me. I liked being kept in the loop. On the big day, the movers showed up right on time and laughed and joked with each other as they moved my giant sectional, heavy old TV, etc. It was nice to be around folks doing a good job and enjoying themselves. They had the whole thing done in 3 hours, and I was moving an entire apartment worth of stuff. I was impressed! I rented bins from them and that was great, too -- now that I'm moved and getting settled in, I just have a stack of bins which Robert will come and retrieve, rather than boxes to be broken down and recycled. Robert went out of his way to help me through my move. Something was broken, he replaced it. Something was lost, he helped me look for it, was ready to replace it, and I found it at the last minute. I had called him only a week before the move and he stayed in touch with me throughout the week to make sure my packing was going ok, he made sure he had enough guys to help me with my move, since I was moving things out of a third floor apartment and a storage facility elsewhere. He really made me feel reassured and the move went more quickly than I had anticipated and we ended up well within my budget by the end of the day, even including the tip. Robert came by our apartment prior to our move to assess how big the job would be. He was honest and upfront and a pleasure to speak with. In just under 3 hours, all was done and clear, tips were given (and well deserved), hand shakes employed, and not a single scratch on literally any item I had. I had cheap furniture that deserved to break en route, had a large computer monitor, a large desktop tower and countless other items, all in perfect condition upon arrival. These guys are amazing!! My boyfriend and I have always moved ourselves with no problem and we expected the same when we came to Brooklyn. Even with a prime parking spot in front of our new home, we nearly died from exhaustion after unloading 1/3 of the truck -- and that didn't even include any of the furniture. I quickly dialed Robert at Top Hat Movers and within a half hour he had a solution for us -- reasonably priced at that. Within 45 minutes, the rest of our stuff was professionally moved to our 4th floor apartment. These guys work fast and understand the pains (and expenses) of moving. Best experience ever moving. Moving in New York can be a nightmare. I had to move up my move and get someone at the last minute, days before my lease was up. I had a quote from Top Hat from weeks back but was skeptical because top hats was the most reasonable on paper. When my move was pushed up I gave them a shot and luckily they just had a cancellation. I have never used a mover before so I was extremely skeptical and ready to be ripped off. I got 5 quotes from different movers with tons of stipulations. Even when Robert was explaining things I was giving him side eye. He was really communicative, he really has no problem talking that's for sure but he is worth listening to. He reviewed my inventory lists, had tons a detailed questions and even came over to take a look around. I couldn't be there the day of the move , so i had to put a lot of trust in him and his crew. Roberts a character but a good one. They moved my 7 room duplex across Brooklyn in 4 hours. I had at least 2 car loads of stuff I hadnt wrapped and his guy wrapped it for us better then we wrapped our belongings. They didnt charge for travel time. He talked me into adding a few guys which made it shorter and did not cost an arm and a leg. The move came in $1000 under our expected budget. I would use them again for any move. read more

Wow, Robert was brilliant today. I had a digital piano delivered, and it weighed the best part of 300lbs. There was no way my wife and I could have got it up the 2 flights of stairs to our apartment ourselves. We gave Top Hat Movers a call and Robert happened to be in the area, so popped over 20mins later to have a look and see what he could do to help. And help he did, the three of us managed to get it up the stairs fairly quickly and without giving ourselves hernias. Without Rob there to guide, organize and provide the much needed muscle, I don't think we'd have been able to do it. He was friendly, courteous and really got us out of a hole! Top Hat has received a lot of great reviews, which is why we chose them and they definitely lived up to the hype for our short Park Slope to Park Slope move. The only thing I would recommend to potential clients is to stay in close contact with them about when they are coming, and that the move date is not official until you make your deposit. I thought we had our time booked after an email exchange with them even though we hadn't paid the deposit (it wasn't clear to me at the time when this was supposed to be paid), and didn't follow up in the days leading up to the move. I had to call when they didn't show up at the move time and realized they hadn't booked the move. The owner felt bad about the miscommunication and went out of his way to come over late in the evening, reassess our move and guaranteed he could have us moved by the end of the month, even though he already had a busy schedule. He was able to fit us in the next day and did a great job with the move as well. He was up front about the price estimate, and about the tip policy, so the final cost was very close to the original estimate. I would highly recommend them to anyone else looking for movers in Brooklyn. read more

My whole move was done in less than two and a half hours (out of a 4th floor walkup and into a brownstone), nothing broken or scratched. I used Top Hat for a one-bedroom move about two weeks ago. I got two quotes and Top Hat was a few hundred dollars cheaper. The price point, proximity to my apartment, and a glowing review led me to choose them for my move. Once I put in a quote online, I got a prompt response. Robert came to check out the items to be moved and estimated that it would take two hours. He was very clear about the price and the fact that I would get five movers. On the day of, Robert came to supervise the crew and do the paperwork. The men were efficient, strong, and careful with the items. They pointed out where the furniture was damaged so I didn't attribute it to them (but the damages were so minimal that I had never even noticed them before). The movers wrapped up the furniture to minimize scratching. I moved to the fifth floor walk-up and was amazed that they could unload the furniture so quickly. I used Top Hat Movers for a small move from Park Slope, Brooklyn to Washington Heights, Manhattan almost 6 years ago, and the experience was so seamless, and the movers themselves were so professional and courteous, that I knew I wanted to use them again, this time to move from my cluttered one bedroom into a 2 bedroom with my husband. Robert was amazing in his pre-move communication. He was able to answer all of my questions and never made me feel like I was asking too much. His rates were competitive and it was easy to see that just like before, Robert cares about his crew AND his clients. In fact, he was willing to do a move WAY outside of Brooklyn (where they usually operate) just because I was a loyal customer! The day of the move, the movers were prompt in their arrival (barring some traffic) and had the entire apartment packed (including disassembling some HUGE Ikea furniture) and packed in the truck in an hour and a half. We are talking 6 years' worth of CRAP! The movers were super careful and didn't complain once about going up and down 5 flights of stairs (I forgot to mention, we were in a 5th floor walk-up building)! When it came time to head to our new place, one of the extra movers who had brought his own car offered to drive me up there so I wouldn't have to take a cab. Another 1.5 hours and everything was unpacked, reassembled, and put into the room where it belonged. I didn't have to lift a finger, nor did my husband. A few of the movers even came into the second bedroom to meet our cats...so sweet! Robert was out of town but texted me to check in on the move anyway! At the end of the day, the move was once again seamless, and I knew that my belongings (my life, really) were in the most capable and trustworthy hands out there. Robert contacted me about my concerns and I have to say was incredibly responsive. He apologized for the way the tip was handled and offered to refund it entirely. He tried to explain why their tip policy is $10 per man/hour, due to their lower quote and not wanting to shortchange the workers as a result. I prefer my costs to be clear and upfront, but to each their own- just know that whatever the quote or cost is, the "suggested" tip will be in the 20-25% range of that total. If the end result works for you, great. You're certainly free to tip however you want. read more

In July we moved from an apartment to another one (both in Manhattan), and were happy with Top Hat Movers. Firstly, great communications. We had a couple of unexpected issues with the new apartment (regarding moving-in insurance), but fortunately we were able to quickly resolve these issues by talking with Robert in a very timely manner. Robert closely stayed in touch with us throughout the move; so we knew we were in good hands. Secondly, excellent services. The crew was always on time (from the initial estimate to the last day we moved), and very courteous and professional. We were a bit worried since we have a rather large refrigerator; but it wasn't a problem for Top Hat movers. Robert carefully took off the fridge doors so the crew could move it through the apartment doors and elevator doors. Once it was moved into the new apartment, Robert reattached the fridge doors perfectly. Last but not least, a very reasonable price. The move was very efficient, so we didn't have to pay for extra hours. Also we could rent plastic bins for a reasonable fee that saved us from paying for duct tapes and cardboard boxes. Robert continuously talked to us to find a better way to save our cost; and he kept his words. I strongly recommend them. Update: A week after the move, Robert called to tell us he found something in one of the plastic bins we returned.
