I've been aware of Lightning Van for a while and heard good things, and I finally had a move that was the right size to use them. Colin is super friendly and good at communicating and doesn't add on any extra surprise fees that way a lot of other moving businesses did. He gave me a flat fee and didn't have an hourly minimum or additional transport fee. This made it more affordable than some of the other services who are vague about pricing and additional fees. I'm such a fan of these movers. I hired them twice in one year, when I moved apartments more than anyone should. They are just so kind, so chill, and so good at moving the stuff in a smart, methodical way. I really like that it's a small company, and not a big monolithic shop. I like that they don't have any branding on their trucks. I really like how well they pack up boxes and then carry like, 4-5 on their backs down the stairs. Can't recommend them highly enough! I had a slightly complicated move with two different pickup locations, and the Colins were great at everything. I wasn't able to be physically present for the move so the Colins worked with my contacts at each location and made things so easy. They moved so fast that they were done early, which made it easy for me to start unpacking and settling into my new place. It was my first time hiring movers, so I don't have anyone to compare them to. I received an email before the move date with instructions on how to pack everything up in advance. I stayed up til 3am getting everything ready. I fell asleep and woke up at 5am to keep prepping. When they arrived at 8am, I thought I had done a pretty good job. I quickly learned I hadn't. Both of the guys who were moving everything suddenly became passive aggressive and irritable. I was alone and confused on top of the stress of moving and not sleeping. One of them semi tripped and then cursed and kicked a door. I offered to help and was brusquely told to do X Y Z. I thought maybe I could make it up to them by tipping extra. So when the time came to pay I handed one of the guys $1600, a 20% tip on top of $1350 for moving me out of my studio. He counted the cash in front of me, said "ok," and walked away. The whole experience was uncomfortable and disappointing and stressful. There are a couple items I'm missing, but I can't be certain it was them. So I guess my experience was that they do a fine job and their attitudes suck if you're imperfect at prepping for them. Maybe if you have a couple friends to keep you company while they move stuff, it would be a fine experience. Or maybe only perfect people should hire them. read more

This is my second time using them for a move and I don't regret it. Andrew and Collin were honestly so great during my move, they moved so quickly and efficiently. It did go over the allotted time but that made sense with my sudden move and my lack of throwing out a lot of useless items. They were great at texting me to let me know if they were running late or not and when they came in took stock of everything that needed to be done and just immediately got started. They even adjusted well when I mentioned the mattress that had to be added due to my lack of communication, but it all went pretty smoothly. Even though my next apartment had narrow staircases they hustled as fast as they (safely) could. My roommate and I were moving to a new apartment and were overwhelmed with the number of options on google/yelp. Thankfully, it was 100% worth taking a shot with this company. Our movers, Collin and Colin, were super personable, accomdating, and attentive to our items. They were punctual, and openly communicative about their plan prior to moving to ensure that everyone was on the same page. Once everyone was agreeable, they swiftly and seamlessly moved all of our furniture into the new apartment with their equipment, and even helped rebuild our bedframes. Their teamwork and careful consideration with our stuff provided much relief throughout the process, and we moved in such impeccable timing. I have now moved with the incredible help of Colin and Collin 4 times since 2016 and I really could not recommend them enough. I made the mistake of moving myself without their help once - and I'll never repeat that again! This time they helped me move into a 5th floor walkup. I had quite a bit of furniture and I was so impressed with how they handled everything, taking some pieces apart when needed and put them back together once arranged in the way that we needed. The timing and number of trips was almost exactly what Colin emailed me in his quote - as has been the case every time I have moved with them. They make moving - one of the more stressful activities in NYC - as easy as possible and are just genuinely great people. Plus their prices are so reasonable and Colin is a extremely responsive when coordinating the move. Colin and Collin moved us from an elevator building to a 6th(!!) floor walkup in 2.5 hours. Their quote was the lowest by far of the many I received, and we have no regrets about booking them. They're extremely professional and efficient (including following COVID precautions)--they have this down to a science and it really shows. Colin even made our couch more stable, which was an unexpected and very welcome bonus. Packing for the move was stressful, but the move itself was super smooth! These guys just showed up and immediately knew what to do; all we had to do was sit back and watch the van. Other moving companies told me they had to charge a 'full move' price, which I thought was ridiculous. These guys gave me a great price and charged a flat fee. I'm happy to say that the 5 star reviews were consistent with my experience. I had Lightning Van move me for July. They gave me a quote for a minimum of 3 hours, charging more if you need more time, their rate being $100 an hour, and some extra for stairs and gas, cash only. I have heard quotes for even more. If you have bedbugs, they will not move you. You are also responsible for any possible parking tickets they may get so they ask you or a friend watch the van if needed. Just be forewarned. I had my bedroom moved along with an assortment of furniture, and they got it all done in a little under 2 hours. Shame in that I didn't get the 'full value' of my money, but why would you want a longer move, especially in the summer? They were efficient and enthusiastic, and got all my stuff out of my old place and into my new quickly, and placed things where I asked them to. If I have to move again (which I hope won't be for a long while), I would feel confident in choosing them. read more

We've used Lightning Van for two moves now and I really can't thank them enough. Both times we hired them to move one large piece of furniture between two locations. The first time was several years ago when we hired them to move a sofa. We found out the sofa didn't fit in the elevator and the guys actually carried it up 15 flights of stairs! I think most movers would've left us hanging but they really exceeded our expectations. They were so kind about it and even helped arrange everything neatly. Most recently, they helped us move a futon and futon mattress. They were covid-safe and even helped assemble the futon for my dad while he stayed in their van.
