This place is cheap and just down right home tasting. They are always open late. My favorite things to order here is really the fried chicken wings and the porridge. My boyfriend and I ate here last night. I had the baked chicken with tomato sauce over fried rice. My boyfriend had the chicken steak with black pepper sauce. I was very happy with my dish. Their tomato sauce was really good. It's sweetened to have the proper Asian tomato sauce taste. The one at Venus cafe is a little too sour. The meat portion here is larger too. overall, the dish has a better meat/sauce/rice proportion than Venus Cafe's. It always feels like there's too much rice and sauce there. My boyfriend also loved his dish. He grew up in NYC and has always complained about the food in the bay. He genuinely loved this dish though! Good food at a reasonable price. I've frequented this place many times during the good ol' drinking days. They're open late, service is fast, and the food is hearty enough to tame an alcohol-filled belly. This is one of the few places in South Bay where they have baked pork chop over rice. Not as good as the ones from the Hong Kong cafes in LA, but it'll do! Be careful on the weekends because as with any late night place filled with drunk people, I've heard that it can get a little rowdy depending on the crowd! read more

It's a small place. Really small. I also expected it to be less gray and white. I couldn't help but stare at the yellows walls with white rectangles where pictures must've been. It didn't matter; I was there to try the HK style baked rice I used to have as a kid. I should've went with the pork chop. I had a tough time making a decision, but in the end I ordered the seafood baked rice. Looking back, I really wish I had ordered something tomato-based. We also ordered the fried tofu appetizer, and he had the sirloin. The baked rice was good. The cheese gratin was great, and they didn't skimp on the seafood. Granted, it was cheap seafood, but everything there was cheap. The richness of the sauce and heaviness of the white rice is what got me--I couldn't eat much of it. I had some of the steak, which was quite large. The only thing we finished between the two of us was the fried tofu. Not because it was that good--lacked flavor, but really crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside--but that it was a lot lighter than the rest of our meal. Boyfriend and I have been meaning to try another late night restaurant open other than Pho Mai, so we decided to come here after stopping by other restaurants in the McCarthy Plaza to find out that they were closed! First off, what I like about this place is that there is a security walking around. It seems the security knows the people working here which is cool, so he gets to chill in here when he wants. We received complimentary tomato soup, which I absolutely love about HK cafes. The I ordered fish filet and tofu over rice, while the boyfriend got pork chops baked in tomato sauce over rice. I didn't get to eat his but he said it was good. I liked my food, but I thought more flavor could've been added. The lady working was super generous. I felt like since my bf talked to her in Chinese, she was impressed by it lol. Along with my bf's food, he ordered a HK milk tea. As we were eating, she saw it empty and offered to refill it for free. (We've gone to SO many cafes and they've never done this for him before :P) I didn't finish my plate, so she put it in a to-go box for me. She also saw my bf's drink unfinished so she poured that into a to-go cup as well. Pretty cool since I don't know too many restaurants that can to-go your beverages. We actually come here a lot because: 1) it's super duper cheap, great for people on a budget. 2) it's actually decent food for what you're paying. 3) close to home I always get the shrimp won ton here. It's good, but would it really hurt to keep the place clean? It's filthy, I get the heebie jeebies just looking underneath the tables and the wall and everything. And it's not like wiping down the tables with disinfectant is enough, it's like the old and worn out kind of filthy. The water cups don't look clean, and quite frankly the only reason I may have not gotten food poisoning from this place is because they cook their meals extremely hot. The plates and utensils are all scratched up, probably really old, washed and scrubbed down so much that its ruin the protective veneer on all of the equipment. Got excited to finally find and try something open late in the milpitas area but was definitely disappointed... The waitress was really nice but it didn't make up for what was in store for us...We were first served these soups prior to our entree but they weren't even hot ...it tasted bland and a little off like canned soup. My friend, who was looking through yelp pictures, showed us a picture of someone that found a dead fly in their soup...so all of us immediately passed on the soup (and kind of lost our appetite). I ordered the beef chow fun. The beef was bland and really chewy...definitely not melt in your mouth texture. The texture of the noodles weren't too soft, which I liked, but it was definitely too oily. There was way too much bean sprout thrown in (ended up pretty much at the bottom of my plate) and I would've preferred onions added in to give some sweetness. There is usually a nice heat coming from the black pepper and stir fry for a good chow fun but this plate was definitely lacking in all aspects. Good cheap hole in the wall place. I used to come here at 2 am to take a break from studying. Now I swing by after 9pm when other places are closed. Their beef chow fun has good wok flavor. I only go to top cafe for their baked rice dish, namely the ham and chicken one with the alfredo sauce. It's so fattening but they make it so well and so tasty. Nothing else that they have really stands out, but then again I haven't really tried their other foods. I just know that their baked rice dishes are delicious. I love Top Cafe. I take a bunch of different people here all the time. It's open til 3 AM everyday. 3 AM! That's crazy. I know it's bad to eat late night food, especially oily ones but I can't help it when I'm hungry. There is a waitress that literally works every night until closing. She's the sweetest thing! Unlike other people I had a great experience here. Our server offered us this free soup that was really good. When we were done with the soup she brought out another giant bowl of it for all of me and my friends to share. I got a satay beef crunchy noodles and it was pretty good. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of it. One tip is to eat it quickly before the the noodles become really soggy. The noodles are best when still crunchy mixed with some of the sauce. I always come in a big group for a late dinner and the wait is pretty good. The place is kind of small but it has a nice HK feel to it. It does get busy pretty quickly, but it's a nice place for your HK good cravings! I got the baked pork chop over rice and the salt and pepper tofu. Love this place! You can tell they get a lot of business frm local regulars so there's a comforting neighborhood vibe. I've tried the seafood baked rice, the blackbean sauce beef wet chow fun, club macaroni noodle soup, preserved egg/pork porridge, and the fried fish ball lai fun. Everything is really good and I can tell that there is very little msg used here. For the porridge, I've even requested no msg, and they happily obliged. Drinks are also great! HK milk tea is excellent, cold lemon tea is solid, and cold lemon honey uses real honey(!!!) b/c i could actually taste a strong honey flavor in there. For the longest time I didn't even realize this place existed until a coworker from HK told me about solid HK diner food here. After dining here, the Cupertino/San Jose location immediately jumps from 1 star to 3 stars, for doing the same shit but better. Cupertino/San Jose location, I apologize for slamming you with 1 star, I have learned the error of my ways. I much rather eat with the flies than with the local patrons and the below average extra mediocrity here! I don't really have anything new to add to the discussion that has not already been said about how bad this place is, but those who yelped this place with 1 to 2 stars know what's going down. The only pluses about this place is that it's open late, quick and fairly cheap (and of course nasty and skanky as hell like a $2 transtesticle JHo from Cel Block D). That's where the joy ends. The Milpitas location is much smaller and dirtier/greasier (I'm not talking about the food yet) than the S. De Anza Blvd location. Put your bare arms on the table at your own risk! When I sat down, I immediately got a free bowl of Borscht soup. Well it is free, that's all I will say. Very watered down with a lot of vinegar and pepper flavor. It's definitely not a good receipe or representative of a good Hong Kong cafe version. Don't drink too fast or you might get hiccups. HK iced milk tea here is terrible. Hardly any tea flavor, and the evaporated milk they used even seems to be diluted. Add ice on top and you have basically an even more watered down version with a c0ckt3ase of tea and milk and a pinch of sugar. Baked pork chop over rice - this is one of the definitive HK style cafe dishes, and a good taste tester for the western portion (versus dried fried beef chow fun to represent the Cantonese side). Well this dish is truly representative of the 1 star award. The essence of the flavor of this dish comes from the ketchup based sauce. While there was a nice toasty layered of near burnt sauce on top, it turns out that layer was almost paper thin. There was hardly any sauce itself when I tried to mix the rice with the sauce. In fact they skimmed the hell out of the cheapest ingredient, ketchup and looked like they diluted it too with corn starch and water. The flavors were horrid. After mixing it with the egg fried rice, there was little to no flavor. Pork chop was nice and soft, but didn't taste very natural. It fact it was a bit too soft, as if they added a shitload of meat tenderizer. After eating I felt whatever solids that would come out my system later would be tenderized too. $6.95 for the pork chop rice, $2+ for the iced milk tea which was a WATTE (water with a c0cktease shot of tea and milk and sugar flavoring). I didn't even finish the pork chop rice, it was that bad. But the most interesting and uninteresting part of the restaurant was the crowd, comprising of literally 100% high tech slaves from the companies nearby like Sis-Koe or Loo Sint. The most annoying were these three middle aged code slaves speaking Cantonese next to me at a booth, backstabbing this one guy who was obviously an engineering lead or manager, making comments about how he shouldn't be an engineer to begin with. The worst was hearing their sloppy English accents when they spoke Chinglish. Can you believe Hong Kongers with bad English pronounce the word "program" as "PO GRAM". I mean FAAAAAACKIN A brutha, you can pronounce the 2nd "R" in the word but not the 1st? WTF?!?! I was trying hard to not enjoy my meal and not laugh, but you guys, obviously professional PO GRAMMERS made it difficult. Then the twats next to me decide to talk about APIs and Java and all sorts of crap and it had nothing to do with coffee. Bloody hell you high tech slaves.....I escaped high tech slavery for an hour to enjoy a meal away from that crap, and yet you bring your talk about non coffee coding and PO GRAMS within earshot, and ruin my already shitty meal. I came here with some friends but I already ate so I purchased a drink. I saw a drink called Spanish Coffee and I was curious on how it tasted. I was expecting a hot cup of coffee or iced coffee. I was close on the iced coffee. The Spanish Coffee came with the best thing in the world. A NICE SCOOP OF ICE CREAM IN IIT ! It really surprised me and it was DELICIOUS ! The menu is large and is has an interesting variety of food ranging from Chinese food to Malaysian Curry. The Red Bean with Ice Cream is really good as well for you Red Bean lovers. The bathroom is actually usable too :D They serve a lot of dishes in this baked clay pot. It's pretty interesting and taste good too. I ordered two soups from this place since I like to have something hot and soupy. The soups came out fast, which I appreciated. My chicken corn soup was quite bland so I ended up dumping some white pepper for some flavor. The wonton soup was on par though. It even had a lot of bok choys! This place is opened late, me and my two friends were on our way back from clubbing in San Francisco and we decided we wanted to get a quick bite before heading home. Luckily we got here at 2:50am, 10 minutes before closing but the workers here still allowed us to have a seat without a hint of that "seriously?" attitude. :) Our server was super attentive even though it was quite packed and late at night, I appreciate their effort in keeping us happy. I used to come to this place a lot because it opens late and it serves good HK style dishes here. I used to come here with my friends after 12 if we ever want some place to hang out and talk after dark. If you come here you got to order the pork chop with rice because it is one of the best dish around town. Me and my friends would order this all the time. Why 3 stars? Because the price is just a little bit on the expensive end (about $10 per person), and besides the pork chop, I wouldn't recommend anything else from here. Everything else is average to decent, also I am not too into the HK style cafe, nothing against it, but is just not my thing. I finally came to this 'fine establishment' last night after a movie. I was told that you order nothing but the baked pork chops- and I can see why! We got the fried tofu as appetizer and the pork chops for entree. The soup that came with it is like a spicy tomato soup that had nice caramelized onions and peppers. So good! The tofu was good but extra oily that I would pat the oil on the napkin and it would just squeeze out. It was good but not a must. The pork chops were so good!! Covered in a tomato sauce and hovering over some fried rice. The rice was so good who the sauce! Best part about the dish was eating the meat off the bone! Overall you get what you pay for. Don't expect great service cause I've been told that it's usually serviced by one woman only. Great late night food spot though. We need more in San Jose! read more

Tea Restaurants are very popular in Hong Kong as they offer a massive menu selection catered to students or folks looking for a quick and cheap meal. Top Cafe definitely fits this explanation, and is a classical example of tea restaurants from Hong Kong. They have the tea restaurants must have's; iced milk tea, mixed milk tea and coffee, minced meat with raw egg on rice, grilled pork chop on rice plate, and deep fried chicken wings. Unlike typical tea restaurants in Asia, Top Cafe actually employs nice waitresses who aren't rude, who will wait for you to order, and won't throw your bread on the ground or spit in your tea if they don't like you. That's a huge plus. One tip, everyday from 2:30~5pm, they have a special discounted menu; everything on that menu is only $3.50. You can order a noodle dish and an appetizer for only $7, or any combination of the dishes you desire, it is a deal you cannot beat.
