I came here due to the great Yelp reviews. I'll be going back due to the great service and friendliness that created those Yelp reviews and what I've experienced myself today. They saw me ahead of time and took no time in doing the state inspection. They explained what needed to be done etc, that it would take up to 45 minutes. They were done in less time than that and for whatever reason gave me a discount. Four wheel drive should be $99, but they charged me $69. Receptionist was friendly and chatty. I asked if it was a family business due to the level of service. She replied that it's two families that feel like one big family. It certainly feels like that, and they seem to endeavor to treat customers like family. That's going to make me a regular here. Well a regular when it suits me. A family business. The location is 5 miles up US Rt. 15, but you find an auto repair shop that's friendly, knowledgeable, and dependable at a fair price. So I don't mind the drive. Looking for honest and friendly car service? Tool In Hand is the place. I don't normally write reviews but they deserve it. I came for a car inspection. They had a special price of $50 (check web site coupon, 2 wheel drive). They also allowed me to schedule an appointment and were able to fit me in the same day. The service center is easily located one street right off route 15. They promptly started work on my car at the appointment time. The waiting room is clean, a decent size, has free wifi and they post their prices for many services. The inspection was completed quickly. 2 mechanics took time to sit with me and review my car's condition. They were down to earth and took extra time to answer questions I had about my new used car's maintenance and condition. When they found a low power steering fluid issue, they topped it off free of charge and reported they found no leaks. Whereas an out of state Nissan dealer did the opposite, recommending a $2000 rack and pinion replacement! So just like other reviews I had read beforehand, I find them to be honest and very fair on pricing. I definitely will consider them for my future car service needs. read more

I work nearby and a customer asked me where she could take her car because she got a flat tire. I told her go to took in hand and they'd help her out. About an hour later, she came back to me to thank me because they helped her get her spare tire on free of charge. These folks are plain and simple GOOD PEOPLE. read more

Best feeling in the world when you find an honest mechanic. A friend of mine referred me here when I was looking for a Maryland Safety Inspection without getting ripped off (i.e., unnecessary repairs just to make money). I'm so glad my friend referred me here. The owner (Tim) is honest, friendly, and highly experienced. I have already had him do work on that car, and on my wife's truck. Very friendly service. All the work I've had done there had been great and quick. The main downside it is it a bit pricey. Coming from NY I thought it would be at least comparable but it is more. Can't complain about the service or the staff though. They have been most amazing. read more

These guys are awesome! My dad is a Master Tech, so I am as picky as they come when it comes to finding a shop. I now live 5 hours away from him so I am on my own and have to be really careful where I take my car. Tool in Hand was recommended to me by a fellow gear head, so I knew it was a suggestion worth trying out. Not only is their shop extremely reasonably priced, but it feels good supported a small, family owned business. This is exactly the type of shop I was looking for since moving to Frederick 3 years ago. Don't over pay or get sold on silly repairs. Ladies, if you are in the market for a new mechanic, Tool in Hand has my highest recommendation. Amazing company! My A/C had not been working so I called last night to see if they had an appointment for today. They were booked but Tim told me to come drop it off and he would see if he could get to it today. He called me first thing this morning and said it would be ready within the hour. This is the best place I have found to take my car to get worked on! In fact, it is now the only place I will let work on my car. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The prices are very fair and I don't feel like I am being taken advantage of. Which I have found is how most other car repair shops treat female costumers. They even have an activity block for my child to play with while we were waiting on our car, which kept her entertained. I totally recommend them to anyone looking for great quality car repairs at a descent price. read more

Mechanic since 1977. Worked in car dealers both in a management level and auto repair. In 2006 I began working for Key Motor Company, which closed their doors in December 2012. In January 2013, I bought Key's shop equipment and opened Tool In Hand. I am an ASE Master technician, Maryland State Inspector and Maryland Emission Certified Repair Technician.

Tool in hand delivers better customer service than my Porsche, Lexus, Mercedes, Toyota, and ford dealerships. Their coffee table is well stocked and the customers are polite and courteous. Over the period 5 years I've had 5 State inspections, a handful of oil changes on various vehicles, and a Toyota hybrid transmission swap. All of my work was performed by Tim or his ase certified assistant Derrick. I collect tools and enjoy doing my own automotive repairs and maintenance but being in good company of a neighborhood shop that treats you right develops an automotive repair itch. If it's been months or years between repairs, you may find your self searching the aisles of a used car lot to satisfy that Repair itch. If you do not own a car or truck or you *never* experience breaks down, I recommend you find a good friend or family member to bring to Tim so you too can witness the Master Jedi of auto repair. Twice between a period of two years, Tim saved me from costly repairs. The first time I insisted on a starter change on my ford truck. Tim kindly advised that it might just be a battery. I didn't have time to wait for a battery change since time had 3 other appointments when I showed up out of the blue, so I went home and swapped out a spare battery. My "starter issues" was solved as advised by Tim. The second time i got my butt saved was when went in for "possible failed relays or burned fuses" for my headlights. It was freezing cold outside and I didn't want to go hunting for fuses and relays and mentioned to time it might be fuse or relays. Within a few minutes, Tim suggested it might just be both my headlight that burned out at the same time. Guess what? Tim was right once again. I don't like to write reviews because I'm very critical so When I write a review I like take the time to be thorough and accurate. With that said, I'd give tool in hand 4.4 stars out of 5.0. When I see them open up a second location closer to me I'll change the rating to 4.5 stars. read more

Always get great, professional and friendly service. Have been a customer for years (as far back as 2 locations prior to the one on Rt 15N). They are honest, reasonably priced, and accommodating. Well worth the short drive up the road. Tim is and has great mechanics. Several years ago, was rear-ended, and although they were closing, the mechanic listened to my description of the drive from the accident to the shop, jacked the car up and quickly suggested I take it directly to the "recommended shop" suggested by the insurance company. He thought the axel might be bent. HE WAS CORRECT! (Took the other place 2 days to figure it out, And charged the insurance company). Tool-in-Hand - No charge, no suggestion that I leave it for the next day, for a more thorough look. He even offered to find me a ride home if I needed one, which I did not (but should have gone to the hospital - concussion). THAT IS GREAT SERVICE. They care more for the client, then how much cash they can get!!! read more

I have been to this locally owned and operated shop twice in the last couple months. Once for a Maryland inspection and once for an oil change for my daughter's car. I have just arranged shipment of new tires to be delivered to their location and installed at a far better price than most of the tire merchants in the area. Superior customer service, helpful and friendly staff, professional advice and gets the job done right and on time. This independent business offers excellent auto care at affordable prices. You can speak directly with the owner, Tim, who will spell out very plainly what needs to be done, and suggest options. Master Mechanic Derrick's skill at diagnosis is truly exceptional! Their work is careful and thorough. My family and I were upset when they moved from the middle of frederick to the northern end of frederick lol, we have since moved and are closer (smile) but honestly we would travel wherever to get to Tool-In-Hand. The team here is very honest, upfront, didn't try to sell me a bunch of unnecessary stuff actually showed me how to save money on certain repairs. I highly recommend Tool-in-Hand! We take all of our cars there, and we've had nothing but good experiences. The staff is friendly, the mechanics honest and knowledgeable, and the prices are great! This is the only car shop I've been to where I know they won't try to take advantage of the customer. They've done oil changes and small repairs, and it's always been done to the highest standard.
