I know the place is called Tony's Tailor shop, but the gentleman who does most of the work is not "Tony" from what my friend in San Gabriel tells me. He does look like he should be in The Sopranos, as one of the reviewers mentioned. I've been going to him for about a year and I've had him hem about 50 items - everything from suit jackets, pants, jumpsuits, shorts, and t-shirts. He has done an impeccable job on everything. The velvet suit jacket I had him tailor came out perfect and looked brand new like I just bought it off the shelf. The jumpsuit was a difficult ask, I had him move the middle torso section up higher which would require him to undo the entire zipper and stitching. It looked brand new just like everything he works on. Note: I would however not recommend you take your denim jeans to get hemmed or shortened if you want to keep the "original hem" in tact. But everything else looked excellent and fit perfectly. Highly highly recommend. He is the best! Thanks for all the great work! read more

So this guy "Tony" is not exactly warm and fuzzy, but I thought I'd give the guy a chance. I can tell you that if a man's work is exceptional, then I would put up with a cold personality and attitude. But his work is pretty much basic and mediocre. With that said, I was asking him for a basic hemming on pair of jeans, buy wanted to keep the original hem that has the wavy roping. I think this guy either does not know how to do that or he just doesn't want to do the work. But the look on his face was like I'm asking him something way out of his scope of work. There was a cut on the original hems already from before, and he said that he can't keep the original hem. I'm thinking, man, you're the tailor, you should be able to do this. He kept insisting that since the original hems already had a cut on the seams, it cannot be used again after the jeans get shortened. I sensed some lack of honesty about that, but I figured maybe this guy knows what he's doing, he's the "expert". So I went along with what he said, but I clearly asked him to hold on to the original hems and leftover fabric that he cuts off. I came back a few days later to pick up the jeans, and they looked silly the way he hemmed them. I don't think this guy knows what denim chain-stitching is. I was asking him for the extra left over fabric and original hems, and he said he trashed them already. I specifically asked him to keep them, but he just doesn't care. Now I realized what that cold attitude was all about. This guy simply does not care enough about his work. He does not take pride in a job well done. He is a "hack and saw", "wam bam" type of guy. I guess you get what you pay for. Lesson learned. Not going back. read more

Took a vintage tweed sports coat to have the waist line brought in by an inch or so. Not the easiest of alterations and I've had it turned out bad in other places on other suits. Here, it was pinned, adjusted, and set up without any hassle. Picked up in a week and the work is impeccable, better than most other tailor shops nearby - I've tried almost all of them in and around Alhambra / Temple / Arcadia. Mission cleaner's tailor is okay but not available all the time. Main St Tailor is terribly condescending and do not respect customer's wishes. Tony's is an old fashioned shop, older gentlemen owner, quite, polite, but do not active engage in conversation, and you'd better know what you want because he's not gonna suggest anything outright. But when you do ask for specific changes, he will consider the best way to approach the issue and deal with it accordingly. In my case, most tailors would just bring in the princess seam (the 2 side seams on the back) and call it a day, but doing so distorts the suit shape slightly and will make the center vent flare open. Tony not only adjusted the princes seams but he also opened up the center back seam and took that in. On top of that he also finished all the rough edges inside for a clean look. That's going above and beyond what I had expected. The work was subtle, the stitching good (and all handsewn), looks great. Price was more than reasonable ($30), the pick up was on time. When it comes to suits alteration, you shouldn't be looking for the cheapest option, you should find the best tailor with a reasonable price. For me at least, Tony will be my go-to from here on out. read more

Ive been going to this shop for over 20 years. As a result, I know both gentlemen who work there. So I have had skirts taken in and all sorts of alterations. To get things right, they ask that you put them on so they get the hems correct. Ive always received a cordial response. On occasion I have had the shop miss a deadline which is why I don't do last minute tailoring. I give them plenty of time. Everything is spot on. Great work. On the sleaves, I personally don't mind the quick method. If I really want the more extended method, I would let them know and be charged accordingly (higher). Ive heard of people having cleaners do their tailoring only to complain. But does it make sense to go to a dry cleaning place for tailoring? No, cleaners are experts on cleaning. And tailors are experts on alterations. Try this place and get ready to have it become your go to place for hemming. Be friendly and you'll get friendly service. I've tailored many suits, pants, etc in my life and this place is by far the WORST. So I got referred to Tony's Tailor by a coworker saying it's the best tailor in town. I recently bought another suit and I needed to get the pants tailored. Nothing crazy, just had to tailor the length. Tony said it would take a week, which I thought was kinda long, but I said no problem as I was in no rush. Fast forward a week, I come in to pick up my pants and he has trouble finding it. So I had to go in the back to help him look for it. After 5 mins, I finally found it and it was untouched. He didn't tailor the pants. He apologized and said to come back by 5 p.m. and it will be "taken care of." I come back at 5:50 p.m. to give him some time and to my surprise, it was left at the same spot I found it. He did NOTHING to my pants. As you can probably figure out, I took my pants back and decided to go to another tailor. This place is horrible. I work in a customer/client service business and I've never had such poor service. Not only did he not tailor my pants, he was rude about it, like it was my fault. I never want to talk bad about a business, but in this case, I have to speak up. If you want your clothing tailored at a timely fashion, do not come here! For simple work this is the place to go. Yes, it's dated with yellowing posters hanging on the wall and an old iron that looks like it should be in the Smithsonian (though it probably works better than most newer models). But, if you've got a simple job that needs to be done in about a week and don't want to spend a fortune then I highly recommend Tony's Tailor Shop. The other day I dropped in to have a pocket tear repaired. He took a look at it, stuck it under the sewing machine, and fixed it in about 10 seconds - no charge! For a guy like me that doesn't have a sewing machine (and has no desire to buy one) I would have gladly paid for that repair - quick and simple though it was. Did his face light up with a glowing smile? No. Did he fall over backwards trying to make me feel desired? No. But did he get the job done? Yes! This guy is old school. Customer service to him is not about pretending to like you in order to prove that he values your choice of him as a tailor. It's about getting the job done. He might not say anything at all. But with a grunt and a stitch he fixed the tear in my pants and that's what I cared about. If you've got something complex and/or trendy or you need your ego stroked then you'll simply have to go elsewhere and pay more. If you take a look at the reviews I think you'll note the pattern: people with simple needs and looking for a bargain are happy with Tony's; people with more complex needs have been more critical. Tony has been making my clothes fit perfectly for the past 15 years. His prices havent seem to have increased during this time, maybe by $1!!! The quality of his work is top notch, knowing a thing or two about clothes and the way they fit, I can say that Tony's tailoring and alteration work is top notch. The reviews sounded excellent, so I decided to bring a jacket in to have the sleeves shortened, to give Tony's a try. I've had bad experiences with other tailors, and have been looking for someone I could trust and rely on. I had hoped this would be the one. One problem I've had with prior tailors was with jacket sleeves. The good tailors I've used always re-do the sleeves as they were, inside and outside. (This involves cutting and mitered corners.) The poor ones just fold some fabric over and sew it up (which usually leaves the opening at the end of the sleeve sticking out in an odd way.) When I walked into Tony's, I almost turned right around and left. The smell of cigarette smoke permeated the place. (How could a tailor possibly smoke in his shop.. or allow anyone to smoke there?) A week in that environment would surely leave my jacket reeking. ...But the reviews were so good, I still wanted to take a chance. I said hello, and Tony (I would presume that was who it was) looked up and muttered a greeting. (He didn't seem overly happy to see a customer walk into his shop.) I told him I wanted the sleeves shortened on my jacket, and explained that I'd had bad luck with the work of previous tailors, asking if he had any jacket sleeves he had shortened, that I could look at. I had hoped he would proudly bring out an example or two of his fine work for me to see, but instead he just grunted "over there" and motioned to a rack behind the counter. I walked over and looked inside the sleeve of the first jacket. The fabric had just been folded over (working button holes and all) and sewn up inside the sleeve. I thanked him and told him that I didn't believe this was exactly what I was looking for.. and left (as I guess I should have done in the first place.) Why is this guy so popular? Is it the prices? Got a dress shirt adjusted and when I went to pick it up, the work was off by a whole inch. Went home and realized some of my other shirts were off as well. I've also noticed that there is often lots of loose threads on my shirts when I get them back. Recently I got back a pair of dress pants that were hemmed way too short. I can't recommend this shop anymore. I've decided to go elsewhere for my tailor needs. In the end, the lack of precision and attention to detail is just too much. read more

Tony is a Taylor who gets the job done without to much conversation. This place isn't very modern but the tailoring is decent. I got my suit, pants, and dress shirt all altered here and they came out good. The price is reasonable and he usually finishes on the time. He's good at what he does, but whats hard about tailoring pants... However, he gave me very inconsistent prices. He charged me $15 for a pair of pants at $6 for hemming and $9 for tapering. But when I went back to him with a different pair of pants he charged me $15 again for just a tapering (I got the pants hemmed for free at nordstrom). I explained to him that I should be paying $9 but he explains that he had to cut the seam and it was hard... I was not happy about paying an extra $6 dollars. He's pretty rude... I've gone to him for 3 years and he always acts like I'm an intruder.. I finally asked him if he remembers me and he said "eh ... a little" That's what I get for being a loyal customer. read more

His turnaround has always been about a week, but for his workmanship, I think it's worth the wait. It's extremely helpful to have a tailor that has grown to know you pretty well. They have been shortening my son's school uniform pants for at least a decade if not longer. and the price is so reasonable. They have also taken care of all my husband's suits and all my designer alterations for a minimal charge. I am one of those busy people who packs too much into each day, so I am always running in at the last minute to get my outfit altered quickly.
