All the well-deserved buzz won't prepare you for how truly incredible this place is -- everything is so thoughtful, considered and delicious. I was in town for a special reunion trip with my mom and Tonino was the perfect cherry on top to make it all the more perfect a time. We couldn't believe how lucky we were to snag reservation through Resy waitlist. Everyone was so kind and thoughtful -- it's such a skill to make everyone feel included, valued and appreciated, especially when it's a packed house on a busy weekend night. Our server offered to put together a pizza bianca dip sampler for us because we couldn't pick just one dip, and someone offered us drink menu/wine list while we sat waiting for our table to be ready, which was so dang thoughtful and really sweet. The taleggio cappelleti with aged Balsamic was everything I dreamed of -- and salivated over -- and more, my only regret is not having a bigger stomach to eat more after finishing that and our appetizer as my mom's dish, the cavatelli with broccoli rabe, pecorino and Italian sausage was incredible too and desserts sound amazing :) The eggplant caponata, ricotta with hot honey and stracciatella with whipped 'nduja, Calabrian chili and basil dips are all individually worthy of writing home about, we literally licked our plates clean. Can't wait to make it back and save room for dessert, fingers crossed we make it back up to Boston soon. Some of the best Italian food I had in Boston, probably top 5. Tonino really blew my mind and every dish was so flavorful, tasty, and cooked perfectly. The place is small and intimate so I would recommend reservations. It has a really nice neighborhood restaurant feel. I got to have a slice of pepperoni and hot honey pizza, the rigatoni, cavatelli, and countneck clams. The pizza was incredible, really crispy and flavorful. The clam appetizer was also incredible - Tonino has some of the best guanciale I ever had. Whoever decided to include guanciale with the clam dish is a genius. A restaurant where bread and pasta take center stage will have my heart every time. We tucked into a corner table by the window which gave us an excellent view of the cozy interior. The enthusiasm from the servers felt genuine and their excitement became infectious, as we found the entire dining room buzzing during the meal. In fairness, the buzzing could have been helped by the bottle of wine we were consuming. We dined on Pizza Bianca with a dipping sauce of ricotta, hot honey and a hint of lemon. Ask for some red pepper flakes if, like me, you also enjoy a bit more heat. My chitarra and clams were tasty -- the pasta soaked up the brininess of the broth well. Less successful was their take on "green eggs and ham" (a spinach linguine carbonara). We found the eggs a bit overpowering. Ended with tiramisu and a generous slice of lemon ricotta cake with fennel pollen (everyone needs some more fennel pollen in their lives). While I get the less is more theory, when it comes to pasta more is more is kind of my take. We found the portion sizes on the smaller side for what they were offering. Perhaps that is keeping with the more upscale vibe of the place -- which seems in tune with the next generation of JP (fortunately or unfortunately). We couldn't help ourselves (again that may have been the wine talking) and took home a hot honey and pepperoni pizza made on the Bianca base. It was heavenly! We really liked the pizza Bianca with ricotta (got hot honey on the side because of an allergy), but it can sometimes be burnt. Others I've gone with liked the amatriciana pasta, cacio e pepe, spicy eggplant pizza, sausage and broccoli rabe pasta, and Margherita Fennel salad. Unpopular opinion, but I don't love the vegetarian pasta cappaleti with taleggio and balsamic (it's a strong cheese). However, I LOVE the flavors and textures of the honeynut squash brown butter seasonal pasta. The tiramisu is delicious and huge! I also appreciate that they offer mocktails like a "phony Negroni". Tonino is arguably the hardest restaurant reservation to get in Boston. It's one of (if not the) best italian restaurants in Boston and it's away from all the tourist spots in the North End. It's a tiny spot with about 16 seats but it's worth the wait. If you find that you're having a hard time making a reservation, I'd recommend walking in right when they open at 5PM and you should be able to snag a table. The first thing I noticed is the service. There's truly a family feel to this restaurant. The server was telling us about the dishes and I could tell she really loved the food. First, we started with few drinks! They have a list of aperitifs and they make for great spritzes! We also got the whipped ricotta bread, two slices of pizza (pepperoni and margarita), cooked clams, and of course two pastas- capatelli and cavatelli. We ended with panna cotta for dessert! The whipped ricotta was sooo good. The light texture, the slight sweetness from the honey, the hint of spice mmmm with the fluffy bread was fantastic. The pizza slices were good but my least favorite of the night. The bread was ginormous but I like my pizza less bready. It's also the same bread as the whipped ricotta so you're not missing out on a ton if you don't get the pizza. The cooked clams were crazy. The broth/sauce was a little bit spicy but the type of spicy where it lingers in the back and there was so much flavor. The clams were also cooked well. However with such a full dish, I wish it came with bread or something to eat it with. The capatelli was insane and so unique. This is also their signature dish! The cheese inside was strong and the texture of noodles was perfect. The aged balsamic.... wow. Don't get this if you can't handle lots of flavors. If you cannnn then yes! The cavatelli was great too. It is a bit more on the basic side, with sausage and broccoli rob. It's still fantastic but not as adventurous as the capatelli. Being Beli's highest-rated Boston restaurant, the bar was set high, and I was fully prepared for it to fall short. Spoilers: it didn't. This charming, unassuming Italian spot completely blew me away. We started our meal with the Pizza Bianca and their trio dip sampler. The bread--pillowy on the inside, crisp on the outside--was the perfect vessel for each dip: The ricotta with hot honey was smooth, creamy, and delicately sweet The stracciatella had an ultra-creamy, milky richness, pairing beautifully with the jammy acidity of the tomato relish and tang from the aged balsamic. The eggplant caponata was refreshingly silky and sour with sweet, caramelized undertones Next was the Countneck Clams. The clams were cooked perfectly - chewy and with a mild brininess that worked harmoniously with the calabrian chili and garlic sauce, which provided bold heat and bright acidity. Now, as someone who doesn't believe in salads, even I was impressed by the Kale and Cabbage Salad. The vegetables were fresh, crisp, and coated in a smooth, slightly tangy ricotta salata dressing. What really tied this dish together was the cured egg yolk's deep, savory saltiness and the breadcrumbs' toasty crunch, adding both depth and contrast. My god, do I like salads now? Time for the pastas. The Cavatelli with Italian Sausage was unexpectedly light yet deeply satisfying. The chewy pasta soaked up the robust, slow-cooked meat sauce, which was lifted by the peppery bitterness of broccoli rabe and a bright, citrusy zing from the lemon. The Rigatoni Amatriciana was a well-executed classic--familiar, comforting, and flawlessly cooked. Rich, slow-simmered tomato sauce, smoky pancetta flavor, all carried in perfectly al dente rigatoni. Finally, we have Tonino's signature dish: the Taleggio, described as a "soup dumpling" filled with goat cheese and drizzled with aged balsamic. We were told to eat each piece in one bite, and let me tell you--this is a dish you absolutely cannot skip. The filling bursted with creamy, buttery richness from the velvety goat cheese, and the aged balsamic added a subtle, syrupy sweetness that enhanced the cheese's natural depth, making every bite feel indulgent yet perfectly balanced. Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, and these were by far the best versions of what they represent. The Panna Cotta was unbelievably silky, custardy, and delicate. Its pure, vanilla-forward flavor was further elevated by the honeyed sweetness of the crisp royal apples and the crunch from the basil sugar. Hands down, the best Panna Cotta I've ever had. And don't even get me started on their housemade tiramisu. It was absolutely incredible. Overall, Tonino has proven itself more than worthy of its coveted Beli rating. Fought the masses on Resy and finally snagged a reservation here for my husband's birthday. This is a cozy little restaurant so we can see why it's always booked out. We ordered a bunch of dishes to try including meatball appetizer, pasta, pizza, and dessert. The meatball appetizer was so good, we devoured the bread and sauces at an impressive pace. Pastas were perfectly al dente and flavored. I would pass on the pizza next time since the stars really are the other dishes, however, we did see a lot of people getting pizza for takeout. Tonino is easily the best Italian spot in Jamaica Plain and highly recommend, if you can manage to get a reservation far enough in advance or snag a rare walk-in table. It's Italian, as opposed to Italian-American, which is something to consider if you're used to large pasta portions or American dishes like Fettuccine Alfredo and Chicken Parm (they have neither). BUT the pasta they do have is delicious -- we always get the Rigatoni Amatriciana and Lumache. I prefer the latter; it's vegetarian, and the parsley and mushrooms and cheese go really well together to lighten the dish. We usually also get an Eggplant and Ricotta pizza as an appetizer / leftovers for the next day. It's excellent, with an airy Focaccia-style crust and basil-citrus notes that brighten the flavor. Wow! After our visit last night, Tonino has secured a place in my top 5 restaurants in Boston. The restaurant is a bit hard to find as there are no major signs outside, which almost makes it feel like a little secret. The interior is very cozy and dimly lit, with small tables next to each other. We were greeted by an amazing hostess and our server for the night. Her service was impeccable: engaging, friendly, not overbearing, and extremely knowledgeable about both the food and beverage menus. Here is a breakdown of all the food we ordered: Sugar Snap Caesar: A refreshing, elevated version of a Caesar salad. The salted ricotta along with the garlic breadcrumbs added a very nice flavor and texture to the crunchy sugar snap peas. This was one of our favorite dishes of the night. Pizza Bianca: A deconstructed pizza consisting of crusty bread served with warm ricotta cheese drizzled with hot honey. The sweetness from the hot honey complemented the lemony ricotta well. Countneck Clams: A savory combo of clams and guanciale served in a delicious Calabrian chili garlic sauce topped with basil. More than the clams, I thought the guanciale was the real highlight of this dish. A great dish, but a bit more basil or a side of bread would have helped balance the saltiness. Taleggio Cappelletti: A burst of warm, savory taleggio cheese balanced with the light sweetness from the aged balsamic drizzle. Perfection! Definitely a must-order. Tonino is a GEM! The food is outstanding but it's the TEAM that makes the experience a perfect experience. I can't say enough about our visit. Make sure you get the ricotta and honey dip with the pizza Bianca. And make sure you order a few pastas 'cause they're all outstanding. If you're like me and hate sitting for too long they make their desserts in to-go formats. I don't even like tiramisu but you need to get it. It's the best dessert in Boston. This is my fourth review of this place in the last couple of years. I haven't been here in months, and second I have a seat at the bar, the owner, Luke, calls my name. It was five o'clock, and he took the time to say hello to me while prepping for what was obviously going to be a busy evening. The food is spectacular, and everyone goes so far out of their way to make you feel welcome. This isn't something for which you can pay an employee. This is character. After a day of driving around, I headed over to JP for dinner. I decided on Tonino for dinner which is a very cozy Italian restaurant, reservations highly recommended, which I booked online earlier in the day. I was promptly seated after I arrived with a place setting for one all set to go and food and drink menus provided. The waitress came over and asked what I wanted to drink and I went with just the still water. The waitress was very informative in describing the menu offerings including the Pizza Bianca with the dips, pizzas, appetizers, and pasta dishes. For a starter, the Pizza Bianca ($3 plus tax) with the Eggplant Caponata dip ($8 plus tax) was comprised of crisp toasted pizza dough bread with a cool Caponata dip with chopped tomatoes, olives, eggplant, celery and other soft veggies, similar to ratatouille, very good. For dinner, the Chitarra, Clams Breadcrumbs ($28 plus tax) was served very hot in a bowl with soft cooked pasta, tender whole clams, garlic, and spices in a very salty clam broth. For dessert, the Flourless Chocolate Cake ($12 plus tax) was very dense with a side of nonsweet whipped cream and canned apricot pieces, a decent treat. The check was presented when I was done which came out to $54.57 with tax and a $2.55 plus tax kitchen appreciation fee (5%) for a check total of $57.31 before server tip. Another restaurant north of Boston which I dined at recently also charges an automatic kitchen appreciation fee, but at 3%. Overall, the Pizza Bianca with Eggplant Caponata was very goods, pasta dish with clams was too salty and the Flourless Chocolate Cake pretty good. I'm not sure Tonino needs another five star review considering how hard it is to get in here, but I did have an amazing meal last night, so here goes.... First, the space: it's small but not crowded, feels intimate and romantic, with nice mood lighting and decorative touches, and it's not too loud to have a conversation. Our service was excellent. Our server was fun, and he checked in on us often to bring a fresh drink order and refill water. The food: we shared the eggplant ricotta pizza as a starter. It's a pan pizza with a focaccia type crust, which wasn't what I was expecting, but it was very yummy. The pasta was the star of the show. We had three and shared the lumache with mushrooms, the bucatini with anchovy and bottarga, and the cappelletti (small filled pasta with a very flavorful pecorino (I'm guessing) cheese, in a balsamic and buttery broth. All the pastas were amazing and honestly, better than perhaps any I've had in Italy. But the cappelletti was the standout. I was the first one to eat it at my table, and I exclaimed, "Oh my f***ing God!" which apparently embarrassed my husband but I stand by that remark. We had a couple Italian wines which were well-matched to the food, and a house Spritz to drink. For dessert, we took home a generous slice of the ricotta cheese, which was delightfully light, not sweet, and garnished with fennel pollen. We ordered the bread with caponata -- delicious. I am a vegan and they prepared a meal for me that was insane and totally vegan. My friend had pasta with clams, again wonderful. It comes in 2 mini-pieces so it's perfect for sharing. perfect combo of spicy + sweet. - Pizza Bianca (basically Focaccia) + whipped ricotta and hot honey - I think I ate this entire bowl of ricotta+honey myself! - Plum / Cucumber / Corn / Gorgonzola salad - delicious! Very summer-y flavors, fresh but wholesome. - Trevisano Salad - my husband much preferred this salad. It was a little too bitter for me - but that's the style. For Pasta (from favorite to least favorite - though all were tasty): - Rigatoni Amatriciana - oh man this was so good! The guanciale?! Absolutely outstanding - no change in rating after three visits. The Cynar Spritz was bitter and yet refreshing with a hint of lemon peel and olive. The mortadella starter is a deconstructed Italian sub but elevated and made elegant. The olives were warm and lemony and briny. The bucatini bottarga and anchovy pasta is ridiculously tasty. We recently went to Tonino for my mother's birthday. This cozy restaurant showcases authentic elevated Italian. As an appetizer, we started with the Pizza Bianca with Ricotta and Hot Honey. The bread seemed more focaccia rather than pizza but I was not upset. It was lovely! Our group of three tried the Taleggio Cappelletti with Aged Balsamic, the Cavatelli with House Sausage, Broccoli Rabe and Lemon, and their Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe. All three were incredible but the Taleggio Cappelletti with Aged Balsamic was some of the best pasta I've ever had. The sauce was buttery goodness. Our server was great and provided helpful suggestions for a bottle of wine. For dessert, we decided on tiramisu and panna cotta. While the panna cotta was good, the tiramisu was the winner. I came here to celebrate my birthday on a Saturday night with one other person. The food was amazing, the staff is very friendly. Our server was very attentive. She explained the daily specials in detail and was very helpful. For drinks, I got the Bergamot Blush. It is orange and very fruity. It came with a lemon peel. We had the daily special pizza Bianca, with Baccala. The potatoes were whipped very smooth. The cod was very tasty. It paired perfectly with the crusty bread. For small plates, we shared house olives, the mortadella plate, and roasted squid. Every dish tasted like they used high quality ingredients. The mortadella plate is one of its kind with various pickled vegetables. They balanced out the fattiness from the mortadella. For main, we each had the chitarra & clams, and the daily special fusilli with chicken liver. The chicken liver was heavenly and melted in my mouth. The clams were big, fatty clams, and they tasted very fresh. Overall, the ambiance was chill, not too loud. I added celebrating birthday when I made the reservation, and the staff added a candle on the dessert, panna cotta. It was very refreshing and unique, paired with pomegranate and apples. I would definitely come back and try other items on the menu! P.S. it seems like the dessert menu is not on their website.
