Prior to moving to the San Antonio area a few years ago, I had never really heard of a breakfast tacos or a bean and cheese taco. Where I'm from, and some of the places I've lived on the West Coast, it's all about breakfast burritos. Since moving here, it seems breakfast tacos, barbacoa & Big Red, HEB, and the Spurs is all anyone talks about around here. So, I had to investigate. So, one morning, after an appointment at the VA hospital, I was feeling quite peckish. As always, I used my trusty Yelp app, to find a place nearby, and it did not fail me. I found Tommy's! There were a few reasons that made me choose this spot for my introduction to breakfast tacos The photos of their tortillas, the bean & cheese tacos, and the carne guisada. Everything looked amazing! But, would it be that good in person? Friends, Tommy's did not disappoint! Perhaps I was a little over zealous in ordering, especially for my first time. I ordered four tacos! 2 bean & cheese, 1 carne guisada, and 1 barbacoa. Oh, and you know I had to wash it all down with a Big Red. The tacos are pretty big. I was not ready! However, they were all delicious! Even though I struggled, I managed to eat them all. Tommy's is like a cross between a greasy spoon and like your typical breakfast coffee shop. You seat yourself, and you can pick a table or a booth. The staff greets you when you come in, and they are very friendly. I do prefer this location, however I have visited one of their other locations, which was a lot bigger. However, I enjoyed the coziness of this location. Also, they do have more than just breakfast tacos. I just haven't tried anything else yet, lol. Is this the best spot for breakfast tacos? I don't know. I have heard of other places that are supposed to be better. Will I ever try them? Sure, probably. However, in the meantime, I'm still going to keep coming here. When this location first opened we were very pleased because we really like the Medical Center branch, but unfortunately this is the second time recently that we've been disappointed here:( The barbacoa meat is too greasy and the eggs, rice, and salsa are very bland... had to add a lot of salt to give it flavor! I have been a customer of Tommy's since they opened their Silicon location. I would say I eat there at least once a week. We are most assuredly regulars. So I was delighted to see that they opened a new location on Blanco and Wurzbach Pwy., sharing the Walmart parking lot, closer to my home. Tommy's food is decidedly not gourmet eats, but it is comfort food and pretty well prepared. On this cold winter day, I ordered a beef fajita taco and a country taco on Tommy's homemade corn tortillas. The country taco contained country sausage, chopped tomato, onion and chile. It was on the spicy side. The fajita had beef fajita, green peppers and onion. Both tacos were well seasoned. I enjoy Tommy's because they are very affordable, their food is tasty and their service has always been outstanding. They have become an SA legacy with about five locations through out the city. It a good place to visit for pleasant food and a cozy atmosphere. read more

I can't talk up or recommend this place more. I order the food all the time many times it is just take out. My sister and I love this place and both our families do as well. My sister has her birthday in January and she is one of the people who doesn't like doing much for her birthday, but we have an agreement she gets to pick where I take her out at least once in the week of her birthday. When I asked her this time the Tommy's off Wurzbach Pkwy is less than a 5 min drive form her house so she picked Tommys for brunch. Of course me being her older brother knowing she likes her solitude, I invited all the primos (cousins) so we had a party of 9 for Tommy's. Let's talk about the service. I had called before and they did advise they would not be able to seat us until the whole party was there. We arrived and were only missing one person, Cousin Tony Jr., ALWAYS late; however, they sat us anyway and were the most gracious. My 7 year old is a talker and she was spoken to with the utmost respect as a little customer and made the wait staff laugh of course. We all ordered different plates and tacos, breakfast and lunch, and even some special orders and substitutions. We all got our food at the same time so no waiting for anyone or food getting cold. Our server was very attentive and never had an empty glass or cup. We even got the check and it was an easy process. The ambience is great. I went ahead and ordered the barbacoa and it is as savory as any place in San Antionio and the tortillas are very fluffy. All the food is extremely tasty and flavorful. I cannot recommend this place more. I know of some other locations that are not as pleasant as this one, but I recommend the drive it is worth it. read more

I thought I had done a review I. The past, but this is our top five places for tacos of all time in the history of forever! And in 2021 they won best tacos in San Antonio. I don't think they serve beer. But the sweet ice tea is badass. Now out of all the tacos they have the one to rule them all would be the guisado con cheese, as the waitress would say. I alternate one of those with a barbacoa but the papa con chorizo slaps too. My kids plea and beg ever weekend for the bean and cheese. First time at Tommy's and I was a bit skeptical from the outside appearance. The full parking lot was a bit reassuring. You seat yourself and a waiter will come to you. I love the fact that drinks are served in large styrofoam cups, easy to take it to go, and big red is highly advertised. I got the taco with barbacoa and migas. It was good! I don't recall the name of it but it's under the "popular" list. The green sauce is already at the table, and for those of you who don't like spice- go easy. The service was ok other than a mistake of being charged for cheese on a taco that already is served with cheese. We tried ti get it taken off but we're told by our waiter that she would have to pay out of pocket for it. I don't agree with that management style so we gladly paid. I would return. Love the addition to the neighborhood. It's close and very convenient. Now the food: I had two 2 chorizo and Egg tacos and my wife had the barbaco taco and they all tasted so WONDERFUL-the flour tortillas were homemade and deliciously hot. I had a sweet tea and it was just perfect! The restaurant isn't too big but there was not a wait. The restaurant is new so it's very clean and bright. The tables are close but you're not on top of everyone. I pass the restaurant every morning on my way to work and now I'll stop by to pick up a taco on the way in to work. The prices are great! We would frequent another small local Mexican restaurant but 4 tacos would run us $27 with 2 drinks and it was getting too expensive so we were happy to find this new addition. Our bill at Tommys, where we had 3 tacos and 2 drinks our bill was $15. Not too bad! We will certainly be back and this will be our new go to Mexican restaurant. read more

No frills comfort food that tastes great at a fair price. Tommy's has become a weekend breakfast spot and weekday breakfast taco pick up spot. We have not done lunch yet at Tommy's, but love the Migas plate and the Chilaquiles plate and the Barbacoa. She tells me I need to drive all the way back with the whole bag of tacos to make sure (basically calling me a liar).
