Been here many times. Just a breakfast place in a bad part of town. Our server was not great. Very short with us. Coffee was the worst I've ever had.... It was so weak we thought we were drinking tea. The meal was just ok. Too many really good breakfast places to choose from that I won't need to drive across town anymore. Let's just say that if you come to Columbus you must give Tommy's Diner a try. It's the nostalgia for us. My husband decided this is where we will go to for some coffee and breakfast. The place is so cute. I love about it. I had a ham and cheese omelet and my husband got the hotcakes with bacon. The coffee was flowing. Our server was awesome. She made sure our cups stayed full. My only issue was my toast was cold with the butter on it. But it was still edible. And my husband did not care for the hotcakes. There was something about the texture that did not sit well with him. I lived in Columbus for twenty years and would drive by Tommy's Diner and think I should try that sometime. Last week I was visiting some friends in Cols. and they mentioned they had been there. We went back and had breakfast. It was such an enjoyable experience. Not a very big place but the inside is lined with all kinds of photos and travel stuff on the walls. I spent a short time just looking around. The menu had everything from breakfast, sandwiches and dinners available. The prices are very reasonable and the service was outstanding. Tommy's Diner has been featured on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives. Also they have been voted best roadside diner by USA Today magazine. I can't begin to say enough good about this place. read more

Saw this place in Triple D, so I had to give it a try. The Greek lasagne they had in the show was not available, but the baklava cheesecake was. They also had an Italian beef as a special, and as a Chicago guy, I was really looking forward to it. Well, apparently Tommy's never been to Chicago. Don't get me wrong, it was a tasty sandwich, but not at all what a Chicago Italian beef is. Shredded beef rather than sliced, banana peppers rather than giardiniera, had cheese rather than as jus, and the bread was a pressed sandwich rather like a Cuban rather than an Italian roll. Came with fries that were nothing special, like you would get from Orida in the frozen section of the supermarket. We also had the turkey club, which was very well done on 3 layers, and their sweet potato fries which were outstanding. Then there was the baklava cheesecake. Holy moly was that good! Worth the price of admission. Came in on a Wednesday at 1:00 and the place was packed. Sat at the bar, which surprisingly had enough leg room for my 6'6" frame. Waitress was fast and friendly. It appeared everyone on the staff was enjoying their job, which is a big deal to me in this piss poor age of customer service. I ordered the Pecan Crusted Chicken salad which was listed on the special board. It was amazing! The chicken was crispy, tender, and steaming hot. It was also a generous portion of chicken. This salad puts the same named salad from O'Charley's to shame. My husband enjoyed his omelette. Our server was attentive to all of our dining needs. I typically do a search online to seek out the best this or that and my sister was coming to visit so I wanted to know the best diner in Columbus, and Tommy's popped up. I was really excited to dine here. I know this is a Columbus staple and I've heard other people talk about it. It's a quirky little place. The decor is nice and what I've come to expect from mom and pop eateries. Unfortunately that's about where the experience end. Our server was a young lady. She didn't tell us what her name was. She was a little bit rude and offputting, but being it was a birthday celebration my sister and I decided to make the best of it. I asked the girl what the diner was known for and she said she didn't know but she would ask. I don't think she actually asked anybody because she never disclosed or suggested any particular meal that we should try. I opted for the Belgian waffle aside of bacon and a scrambled egg and my sister got the French toast aside of bacon and scrambled egg. I will admit that the Belgian waffle was was fluffy and had a decent texture. The bacon was not cooked enough to my liking, and it had an off taste to it. Nonetheless, the dining experience wasn't as pleasant as I was hoping for it to be neither our meals were photo worthy, which was very disappointing as always please visit your local dining areas and support small business. One thing is always look to see if anywhere has been of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. BANGGG QUITE a few stand outs here: 1.) The country fried steak. Not just coated in a flour and fried. The breading was seasoned unbelievably well and the steak wasn't just a thin pounded cut to where you only get breading 2.) The gravy. Best gravy I've ever had. 3.) The biscuits. PHENOMENAL crunch on the outside and still moist in the middle. 4.) The Hollandaise sauce. Also best I've ever had. Beyond creamy with a slight extra vinegar taste to it 5.) Baklava cheesecake. I genuinely wish we'd just gone to Subway. We both ordered omelets - I got bacon and cheese, my husband got ham and cheese. He had the potatoes and toast, and I went with the beef veggie soup. First off, have you ever seen an omelet without cheese inside? They just threw the cheese on top, leaving the inside dry and lifeless. My bacon was overcooked and so crispy it felt like chewing on bark, with zero flavor. His potatoes were borderline burnt, and as for the soup... I bet the hospital soups are way better. I don't get it. How does a place this busy serve food this bad? It honestly made me wonder if the Columbus food scene is that bleak, or if we just hit a really off day. There seemed to be a fair amount of parking, but the lot was packed. Popular spot for lunch. When you walk in the door you are taken back in time. It was a charming and fun atmosphere. We were greeted by the owner and quickly seated. They must have known how important we were. lol just kidding. We both ordered the BLT and sweet potato fries. Everything was good, not great. Haven't been since I was a kid and loved it then! I decided to order breakfast while in town. It has been a decade. Used to go after church every Sunday with my grandma Marge who was a long time regular. I was blown away with how flavorful and presentable my dish came in a take away box. Once I dug in I quickly realized this might be the best eggs Benedict I've ever had! That is an honest opinion and makes great since why the community loves this place! Its a bit further from the main hubbub of Columbus, a little east in Franklinton but has parking and great food and ambiance. We ate lunch at Tommy's this past week. It was packed, and I can see why. I had the Greek gyro with extra tzatziki sauce for 50 cents and it was fresh and delicious. My friend loved the meatloaf dinner. Everybody seemed to really enjoy their meal and the atmosphere was happy and gregarious. Didn't have any room afterward for dessert, but the selection and variety was the biggest and best in town with everything from pies, cheesecake, baklava, and other yummy desserts to their famous rice pudding. I wanted to meet a friend for lunch and asked her to pick the place. She said Tommy's - my brain went to UA and pizza. I said so much out loud and she clarified - Tommy's DINER on W Broad St. Ahhhhhh - I was familiar with the are having worked downtown but also worked off Cable Ave and used Souder many times when hopping over to Grandview when I lived over that way. She picked the time and we agreed to a date. Because I'm me - I did my research on the EXACT location (and parking) ahead of time and especially the menu. I saw this really IS a diner as it's only open for breakfast and lunch. I found the diner easy enough and found parking was plenty. Monday at 12:30 - they were busy but my friend got there a few minutes before me and had texted she got a seat for us - right inside. Boo yah! Easy to find her. Our waitress, Nicole, was very attentive and pleasant. My friend has NOT researched the menu and ended up asking for a menu item with changes made to her preference - NO PROBLEM! Fish sandwich and fries no slaw. I went straight off the menu. Fiesta chicken salad. It was either that or the strawberry chicken. I almost asked for no tortilla strips and oil/vinegar rather than the suggested dressing - but I kept the strips and asked for dressing on the side (which I didn't use). Food came out quite timely and both looked delicious. I'll post pics but they are on my phone so not sure they'll attach to this write up. We talked and talked and ate and ate. I ended up eating all the good stuff out of my salad but didn't clean the plate like I do with hubby. I was more polite today. LOL! My friend ate her entire meal, too. Both of us had sodas but I was drinking slowly - I usually plow through several refills - again, behaving nicely today I guess. The bill came and I'd say it was fairly priced. I hadn't much paid attention. Our 2 meals and drinks were a little under $30 and my friend tipped - only because you pay of the way out and it was easiest this way as she left cash for the tip. I have been paying $20 per person for MEAL ONLY recently. I definitely can live with a little cheaper cost as I'm trying to get out of the house more often and do so by meeting friends for meals.
