First review of 2025 and this was AMAZING. Significantly better than the last time. The house giardiniera is so so good, so much flavor. I like it more than anything I've tried in Chicago. I got the Reuben which was perfectly toasted and I'm sure would've been even better at the restaurant than takeout. Saw this advertised on Yelp and figured, why not! My hubby is still on the search for the perfect, back East cheesesteak here in town. He says this one served here was "pretty good" I had the burger which was really very good! The service was good, all the employees looked happy to be there. Friendly and welcoming, food doesn't come out fast, but they gots some hustle...four times I have eaten there, consistent and genuinely warm..4 stars. Food- Is GOOD!!! The combo sausage and Italian beef sandwich is huge and tasty, comes with peppers and onions, spicy giardeneira if that is your thing (its mine), I got two meals out of it. Second time, the pastrami Reuben...good sized sandwich, nice grilled crispy exterior, but the pastrami was rubbery, not Vienna, like it should be. Third time the hot dog special, good value, they gave me extra crinkle cut fries. Fourth, this last Wednesday, the Spicy Italian..minus mortadella, 'cause I hate it. Tried Tommy D's yesterday while making a weekend visit to Tucson from Phoenix. I regret nothing about my decision. I ordered the Italian Sub and fried mushrooms. The sub was stuffed with all the deliciousness and the mushrooms were spot on! Others on my party ordered the cheesesteak, fries, onion rings, and Chicago dog. The fries were lightly salted and cooked to perfection and the onion rings were perfectly battered and fried golden to provide the perfect taste. I was told the cheesesteaks were just as good. Oh, and I can't forget the pizza puff. Similar to a hot pocket but even better with a light flaky crust and generous pizza filling. Service was quick and all the staff were friendly and very helpful. The restaurant is small but cozy. I'll definitely be back on a figure trip to Tucson. read more

After a day hiking Mount Lemmon, I was craving a cheesesteak. I'm not from the area so I had to do some research and came across this place! And I'm so glad I did -- I utilized the drive thru and after driving home (20 minutes) the food was still hot and remarkable . I ordered the cheesesteak just as it comes and a "small" fry. I'll explain the quotation marks later. The cheesesteak was better than I even knew to expect! The roll was tasty and perfect. The homemade beef was delicious and flavorful and perfect. The provolone was mixed in and melted. It also included sautéed green peppers, onions and mushrooms mixed in with the beef and cheese. It seemed like there was butter or mayo on the roll too -- it had this glorious buttery taste. The proportions and flavors were amazing and I'm hard to impress! And the FRIES. I ordered a small and yet got more fries than I would've expected with a large. What a lovely surprise! They were perfectly cooked and lightly salted. I wish I could say I ate it all, but the portions were so gloriously large that I wrapped up half the sandwich and half the fries and will have a whole other meal out of it tomorrow! *mind blown*. I'm extremely impressed with the quality of the food even after my drive; I can't imagine how incredible it is in person. This does not have a fast food vibe at all, so don't consider it that just bc it has a drive through. It's got a small business feel and the service I received from the woman at the window was top-notch too. She answered my questions and made recommendations and didn't even try to upsell me when I asked if I needed a large fry. Waited about 15 minutes for the food after ordering but it was well worth it and I could tell everything was fresh! Next time I'm in town ... I'll be here. We have been customers for years, first Luke's then Kenny D's now Tommy D's. This was sadly our last time eating there. To say the food has gone way downhill is an understatement. Our last 3 times eating there the food order is always wrong and today it was yet again. The quality as well is not the same. Today was our 4th try at a sausage sandwich with grilled onions. No grilled onions just a container with about 10 pieces of raw onion. Italian beef was fatty and French fries were cold. Which is sad because you can always count on them to have great fries. First let me say that we like to support the local establishments. It kills me to have to write this review. However, I struggle with businesses that "kill" a legacy with stupidity. We have been going to Luke's, Kenny D's, and Tommy D's for decades. We really wanted the latest iteration to be successful "for us" however I doubt we will going back anytime soon. I'm pretty confident this latest iteration will be the final nail in the coffin; sadly. We live in the neighborhood so our motivation is good local food at a fair price done quickly and accurately. They showed some promise with this last iteration being cleaner and classy however the "downtown back-east" vibe is mostly sacrificed for the polished look. The most probable deathblow is the dispensary next door. I kid you not, there was a horrendous smell of weed the last few times we have visited. The folks there are nice but it makes me wonder if they are indulging in the oregano in the back room or they are nose to the ventilation system too much. The accuracy of our orders has been consistently haywire. Sorry, but waiting too long for the correct order in not my idea of ideal either. Food quality has great promise but given the negatives like the weed smell, poor accuracy, value, sterile ambiance, lack of sketch-free parking... other places are a better value - for us. I'd like the owners to try again in a more family-friendly location and clear-headed staff. I apologize if this sounds "rough" but there are so many places that seem to get almost everything right that I cannot waste valuable ......well, I'll just go elsewhere for now. So for locals this is a staple in my opinion. Formerly Kennedy D's, they still have the classic Chicago dogs, Italian beef, pastrami, and the most classic black cherry juice. The interior was redone and is much more modern and welcoming. The lady at the front was very friendly. The pastrami sand which was Devine. Melted provolone great mustard on a crispy roll. Classic crinkle fries with house made ranch. Sandwhich 9.2/10 ranch 8.7/10 fries 8/10. Black cherry juice 20/10. Top three best pastrami sandwich in town. All in all 8.7/10. Very good read more

Called in an order for take out. They said it would be 40 minutes. When we arrived to pick up, we stood at the counter for 10 minutes before being helped. The kitchen was so unorganized. They were so behind due to having to push other orders ahead because they we incorrect. The owner was back there not helping much. We could hear him cussing. Very unprofessional. Checked our order in the car and of course, we were missing multiple items. Needless to say, our food was cold when we finally got home. We actually ended up throwing all of it away. Tommy D's is the real deal. Got the 8" Beef, wet, with house-made giardiniera and sweet peppers. The bread was perfect, stood up to the dip without going soggy. The beef was nicely seasoned, and the giardiniera, obviously fresh-made, brought the right amount of spice. Soooo good! Added an order of crinkle fries, which were old school awesomeness. With all the talk about Portillo's arrival in Tucson I found my self on the east side and had read about this place. I had not been there in years and several owners. I've been on a italian beef sandwich discovery since Portillo's opened. I trend away from chains.........recognize that Portillo's is good, this place is so much better. I had the Italian beef sandwich and was served by the new owner. The sandwich was much larger than Portillo's and absolutely perfect with cheese and peppers. I remember that this spot was sort of a dump when I last visited. The new owners have done a great job of modernizing the place and it was spotless. I will go back. read more

Being a deeply chauvinistic native Chicagoan (and Cubbies fan) I'm really really picky about my Chicago Dogs--Tommy D's has it just about right--but, they should use authentic Rosen's Poppy seed buns. Kudos to their locally sourced bakery buns, but they're just a little too big and fluffy, detracting from the "dogginess" of the Vienna frank inside. Now the Italian beef--that's another story! Not quite the Chicago variety which is distinguished by red and green peppers with onions swimming in brown au jus---this is a Chicago Italian Beef on Steroids--FANTASTIC, spicy giardiniara, provolone, cheese, garlic and a PERFECT crunchy Italian roll. This one hits it over the ivy covered wall at Wrigley. Also a nice surprise to see hard to find (at least hard to find in Tucson) Garrett's caramel corn for sale. read more

Stopped in for lunch and had the 8 inch combo Italian sub. The meat was tender and the Italian sausage was good. I ordered the sandwich with hot peppers. The only thing was that the hot pepper mix had entirely too much garlic big pieces of garlic cloves in the pepper mix. Really was too strong to even get proper taste of sandwich. I know I will taste the garlic for a very long time. I love garlic just not as much to take away taste of a very delicious sandwich.
