Oh man, it breaks my heart to write this but I have to agree with all the most recent reviews below. I came on Yelp to see if others were sharing my major disappointment in the recent changes and sure enough....What happened?! Tomatillo had something so good going and now they pulled the plug on all of it with their new menu. I thought there was something wrong with the online menu, like it wasn't loading properly or something, but I came to find out that they did in fact reduce their menu drastically. They cut their build your own burrito options and my personal favorite, the Say Hey Kid Burrito and veggie cheese. I did try their tempeh burrito that was on the menu it was a bit underwhelming. They changed an appetizer on the menu. Queso Fritos. Same name but changed the item to fried squash and sweet potatoes. I called to tell them this wasn't what I order. They said the item description has changed. Why would you change the description and not the name. Am I wrong? It's misleading. I literally worked all day and that's all I wanted so I'm annoyed. Again, an excellent lunch menu, this time on a Saturday. I enjoyed the Poblano squashburger with a side of lettuce. Small family groups began to arrive after 1 p.m., but the place did not get jammed. The selection of healthy food is awesome. It seems the place might also cater to a nighttime crowd for drinks and light meals, fitting the locale. Just off the phone with Max, manager and he didn't really seem to care too much -- POS system, 1 guy working, blah blah blah. FYI -- when you order delivery, they DO NOT include chips and salsa, unless you request it. Fine. The kicker is, Max tells me they can't see it when you request it on their POS. *SHAKES HEAD* This is like the 5th time we've had an issue when using purchasing food from them and when we call, it's the same excuse - no accountability and they don't really seem to care much. I'm not sure why all the harshness from everyone because this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in New York right now. They get crowded sometimes...because its great food. I've never had trouble getting seated immediately or just popping in at the bar. For starters the salsa is amazing - sweet, a little spicy and just the right amount of chunky. They're always quick to replace chip baskets. I sware I go through like 4 baskets every time and its great. The drinks are big and usually pretty stiff. I love the Jalapeño Margarita, full of real pepper pieces and made with Tanteo Tequila. I've had the beer sampler too which is a great deal for only six bucks. The food is always awesome. I'm a vegetarian so i'm a huge fan of the barbeque tempeh and i'll occasionally get the Mahi (during celebrations). The verde sauce is fantastic and the rice and beans (R&D) is always perfect. Also i love the amount of hot sauces there are floating around the restaurant - always fun to swap with the table next to you. On top of the great tasting food, its also great quality - all farm to table with the exception of the fish - which is great quality, just from a little further away. (I know all the meat is local, grass-fed etc. where applicable). It would be nice to get stuff from somewhere aquaponic in New York - i'd be willing to pay an extra dollar for that. Tomatillo is great and always keeps me coming back. The waitresses are all super nice, accommodating and friendly. This is a fun casual spot in Westchester worth visiting. read more

We had high hopes for this place, but were super let down. First, the tacos are tiny (especially for the price!). The flavors were good (the chicken was great, the steak was good). Second, our chips were stale. We did have a late dinner, but that's no excuse for stale chips. Third, the salsa for the chips reminded me way too much of a sweeter Italian pasta sauce. Lastly, it was wayyyyy too expensive for what we got. Some good things: guac was nice, the rice and beans were tasty, chicken taco filling was tasty. What bothers me the most about this place is that you can tell the quality of the food here is really good, but for some reason it just doesn't come together well. I've had better burritos made with crappier products (not organic, grass fed, etc. etc.) And I'm not even talking authentic vs. Tex-Mex here. . . I've had the burritos here on many occasions and the just seem really greasy and heavy, especially the burritos with the fajita style steak or chicken. The rotisserie chicken burrito isn't bad, but not the greatest burrito in the world. The salsa they make is fantastic, but thats the best thing they make. I think I will stick to the Mexican dives in White Plains if I want my Burrito fix. I must admit that the chicken mole is good when they cook it right! read more

Being a fresh import from the desert, I've been scouting for good Mexican food for a reasonable price in this part of the country, and so far the New York area has been disappointing. On a whim I found myself in the Tarrytown area, and came across this cute little restaurant in Dobb's Ferry. The food turned out to be amazing, the best I've come across so far. I've been there twice now, and the first time I built my own burrito with pork tinga and broccoli rabe, among other veggies. Delicious. The second time, I got the black bean soup (fresh guac and diced red onion as garnish was a nice touch), and a shrimp burrito, which was a bit bland until I put the salsa of the day and some chipotle on it and it jazzed it up nicely (for the uninitiated, the condiments are always the secret to enjoying Mexican food to its fullest). If you have room, try the flan! The salsa is addictive, and they also have a Salsa of the Day, as well as El Yucateco and a chipotle sauce in bottles on each table for condiment. read more

I've eaten there over a dozen times over the past 4 months and have yet to be disappointed. The effort this restaurant makes to "go local" is really worth noting (tons of stuff from Stone Barns). A lot of the produce is organic, hormone free etc - goood ingredients. Meanwhile, the taste is amazing and the prices are unbeatable. Locally sourced Mexican food....I mean really, who does that? Its amazing. I'm obsessed with the SAUCES (try the Cilantro Pesto and the Salsa Verde and you'll understand). As a quasi vegetarian, I'm grateful to see a menu that has plenty of options. Food comes out quick! The craft beer selection is good and it seems to change pretty frequently. I think they have 6 taps? I did try a Margarita, which I don't usually enjoy, and I actually liked it. Kudos to the bartender for that one. I'm surprised that people have had negative comments on the service. They've always taken excellent care of me. I've been in there when its packed and the servers where all attentive and friendly. These guys hustle when its busy, that's for sure. The vibe is sweet. Its a small spot that gets really busy, I would recommend getting their early. I've met a lot of people sitting at the bar. Decor is funky and they play cool music. Honestly, I really wanted to like this place. I like going up to that town, and having some good mex to eat would just make it better. Unfortunately, that is just not the case. The tacos were bland, and the chicken flavorless. I found myself just dumping salsa on everything so i could eat it. The salsa even tasted like it was from a jar. This place is overrated. The service is inconsistent, but generally poor. The food is average at best. Unfortunately it is not very clean -- The menus are usually covered in sauce, the tables and chairs are often sticky. One time we had to sit on napkins as otherwise our pants stuck to the chairs.....(I'm not kidding). In terms of food the fajitas are usually OK, the quesadillas are hit or miss, sometimes OK, sometimes burnt and sometimes soggy and greasy. Typically the teenage staff are surly and inattentive. Last time It took 30 minutes and three requests to get a glass of water and then a bunch of attitude from the wait staff, drinks spilt down the back of my girlfriends chair and then no sour cream or salsa provided with the fajitas. The draft beers are pretty good, but the cocktails are really weak and if you ask for a strong one (so it is the same strength as every other bar) then you get charged an extra $4 - not cool. The braised short rib enchilada was absolutely delicious and hot (temperature) my favorite. I think I had it with the chile rojo sauce, but couldn't really tell. The meat was melt in your mouth amazing. The guacamole was very tasty too with the lovely tang of lime. I also had the soup special that was a pureed root vegetable. That wasn't so amazing with an overpowering celery flavor. I added the chipotle salsa that is standard at the table setting and it made it a little better. The restaurant is small, so when it is crowded you might have to wait a bit. The service was attentive and very friendly. The ambiance is very warm. I will definitely be back for take out soon cause now I'm fantasizing about the braised short rib enchilada. Maybe I'll try it with a Mole sauce next time. read more

Mehh This is more like a 2.5 I suppose. Went there for lunch with my boyfriend. We were the only people in there- the service was slow- hard to get a water refill, etc. One thing that was great about this place is that the waitress was really knowledgeable on gluten issues- she warned me that the chips shared a fryer with glutenous items. The issue I had with this place was in the way they charged for food. There were numerous signs that said that there was a lunch special from 12-4 Monday-Friday that was $3 off a burrito. I had asked her if the burrito was gluten free, and she said it wasn't, but they could make any burrito I wanted, put it in a bowl and give me corn tortillas on the side- great! So we both got a burrito (mine was in a bowl with 3 corn tortillas on the side.) The food was pretty good. Decent, but not great. When we got our bill, we were charged full price for the burritos, and they charged me extra for corn tortillas, which I thought was lame because I didn't get the flour tortilla wrap! But whatever. When we told her we thought we got the lunch special she said we had to ask for the special when we ordered because the wrap was a different size. I think she should have said that when we ordered, or it could have indicated that on the menu- but whatever, I also reminded her that I didn't even get a wrap- I doubt they would have put less in my bowl of food. She said because we "didn't know" she would give us a discount- which was $2 off. I guess it's not a huge deal I just thought it was kind of a tacky way to do business. Tomatillo is a small Farm to Table restaurant in Dobbs Ferry, NY. I very much enjoyed the burrito bowl. The price was reasonable. They have a pretty good selection for those who want or need a special diet such as gluten free or vegetarian. It is a quaint place, but when it is crowded it is a bit noisy. The staff was friendly and efficient. We didn't have a long wait for our food and it seemed all hands were on deck, as what seemed like some type of manager/supervisor was also bringing food to the tables. Tried Tomatillo for the first time today on the recommendation of a friend. We arrived around noon on a Saturday and were seated quickly, and decided what we wanted within about five minutes of sitting down. Fifteen minutes later, our waitress still had not come back to check on us and take our order. Around the same time, a personal mini-emergency came up and I needed to get my food to go if it could be ready at a reasonable time. I got up out of my seat and found the waitress to make her aware of my situation. I explained that we had been waiting a long time to have our order taken, and that we now needed to get our food to go. She apologized and told us our order would be moved to the front so we could be on our way. About 5 minutes later, our food was ready. I really, really appreciated her help and it made my experience much more positive than I thought it would be after waiting for what I thought was a lengthy amount of time. I had the Syd Fishus burrito (mahi mahi) which was pretty good. I'm still holding out hope that there's a delicious, reasonably priced Mexican restaurant in Westchester that seasons their food well. (Why is everything always so bland?) Regardless, the food was okay. What I really appreciated was their commitment to making things right and helping me get my food to go fast. We ordered Turkey tacos Chicken tacos Cheese enchiladas Kids Bean burrito Kids quesadilla The tacos were a soggy, flavorless mess! The enchiladas were tasteless as well. The kids did not eat their burrito, all they said was its nasty. I had to agree and couldn't force them to eat it. The 1 star is for the quesadilla and the beans and rice. Farm to table with Mexican flair The thing you have to understand about Tomatillo is that it isn't a 'normal' Mexican restaurant. We come here once or twice a month and accept that the items which will be spectacular - pretty much any soup, the more rustic salads, almost anything with kale and/or short ribs, and (usually) the entree special - are not going to be the dishes for which one usually goes to a Mexican restaurant. And the Mexican dishes often come out a little 'odd'. On our visit earlier this month we started with the Queso Frito which was goodish. The special soup (Asparagus), kale/chorizo/guac burrito, and short rib covered nachos were all fabulous. The special entree (Berkshire pork enchiladas) was delicious but odd - they were actually somewhat salad-y almost sauce free tostadas. Lastly, if you want something alcoholic go for the Cedar Street Margarita or a beer. Neither the house margarita nor sangria are worth drinking. read more

I am so glad I came here! I am in town for work purposes and the food I've been getting served has been horrible to say the least. As a vegan, my options are limited so when I saw this place was only a few minutes away I checked it out with some friends. I had the wet seitan chorizo burrito and it was so good. After hearing nothing but accolades for Tomatillo from coworkers, students, and other locals, I decided to finally try it last night since my husband and I were stuck in the area due to the storm. I'm assuming that it wasn't terribly busy because the weather was absolutely horrendous last night. We were pointed in the direction of a few tables once we entered and ended up ordering a beer, unsweetened green tea (yum!) and we each got burritos--my husband, an Iron Man (beef) and myself a fish with mole sauce. Mine was delicious, but my husband's beef was a bit tough (insert joke here). We also had dessert--a flan and Mexican hot chocolate--which were really exceptional. Also great? The price tag! We only spent $40 including drinks and dessert. My only gripe? The service was total crap. Our waiter was completely oblivious and never asked us if we needed refills on our drinks, wanted more chips/salsa, nor did he check on us to make sure everything was ok. I don't require much attention but this was severely lacking. Will I go back? Perhaps, but I definitely won't be going out of my way. For better Mexican food, go to Cafe Maya in Fishkill. Tomatillo is a great local Mexican spot for Dobbs Ferry. Probably the best bang for your buck in all of town. You get a massive portion of high quality food for super affordable prices. It's not overly greasy, unlike most Mexican places. What I really like about Tomatillo is there sauce offerings. So many varieties and they all certainly taste homemade. Stopped in with the hope of getting some good Mexican tonight. It was a Tuesday night about 7:30pm, The place is small, only about ten tables and it was probably 80% full. The place is nice enough and service was adequate, but....the food just did not have any taste or spice. It was about as bland of Mexican Food that I have ever had. It wasn't bad or good. So, I'll be nice and give them **. I ordered braised ribs tacos with black beans and rice. Their top shelf magarita was bitter. I heard the couple next to me complain to the manager. Their ingredients are indubitably fresh, and their combinations and sauces clever, but their prices are steep for mexican food, and it just isn't going to cure that hankering for the real deal. One genuine complaint - when they're busy the food quality suffers. Last night I got the guacamole and salsa I ordered but no chips! On a previous visit, the rotisserie chicken was so dry and tough as to be inedible. I called and complained very politely and was very specific as to the issue, my name and phone number, and my desire for re-compensation. I never heard back from anyone (this was months ago). I really wanted to give this one two stars, but I can't deny the fact that my wife and son consistently choose this place for carry-out and it seems to please them greatly. Our twins were particularly upset, as they had their hearts set on Tomatillo chicken fingers and french fries for their bday dinner.
