Finally tried the buttermilk pancakes for myself and they did not disappoint! Grandma and my daughter both ordered the Chuck Wagon which comes with 2 pancakes, eggs, and back bacon. I just had a side order of 2 buttermilk pancakes cuz I knew that my daughter wouldn't want to eat her eggs, so I would end up eating the eggs for her. Also...finally got around to trying their pie this time! Bought 2 slices of Lemon Meringue pie to bring home for an afternoon snack. Whoa...the meringue is sooo high! They left the box lids open cuz the meringue is really way too tall to be able to close the box. This pie was sooo good. Some of the best Lemon Meringue pie that I've ever had. Reminiscent of the Lemon Meringue pie that we used to get many many years ago from Saskatchewan Pavilion Restaurant that used to be at Park Royal Shopping Centre. Somewhat taken aback to look at my bill and realize that they charged me $2.25 for a hot water and lemon. Should have seen that sooner. My bad for not checking the bill sooner. Don't know there's anything much I could have done about it if I had seen it sooner. I think it's quite ridiculous though. I do see hot water with honey and lemon on their menu for $2.25 but I never asked for honey. I just asked for hot water with lemon. If I'd known they were gonna charge me for that, I'd have stuck with bottled water they put on our table for free. Still love this place regardless of the $2.25 charge for hot water and lemon. Will make sure not to order that again next time. I was ever so sad to hear recently that Tomahawk restaurant is for sale. This place has been a favorite of ours for a number of years now. There have been a lot of restaurant closures in the last few years but this one really hits me hard cuz of the sentimental attachment to it. I have been to the Tomahawk about 4 times in the past 10 years and have never been disappointed. The only reason I don't come more often is the distance as I live quite far. I have had a few items but my favourite is the Mixed Grill. Its a massive brunch favourite that never lets down. Eggs, Toast Burger patty, salad, and loads of Bacon and Hashbrowns and a chopped up weiner for extra fun. And each one is tasty! The Burger patty is nicely seasoned, Bacon is awesome and it just all goes down so well. The Ambience is awesome. Lots of old carvings and retro decor. Service is fine and they are very attentive. I'd seen photos of the interior of the Tomahawk restaurant and thought that alone was worth taking a look. Outside a pair of totems greet diners, and inside is a cozy and rustic dining room which even has counter seating. I decided on the beef dip with a garden salad.. the orange and cranberry dressing was a nice take on a vinaigrette. As they do serve roast beef, that's what was in the sandwich and the bun was a good quality also. My nice little lunch finished, I opted for the cherry pie. Saw this on diners, drive-ins, and dives. Was in town overnight, good service, and the food was hot coming out. I had the fish and chips and my mom had the caesar salad. Hot food is super important to me, so Kudos there. My mom was disappointed in her dish because it felt like a high price for the amount of food she received. There were three of us all unrelated. We ordered an omlette split, pancakes, and side of Sausage. All was terrible, even the coffee. We paid the five dollar split fee for the omlette and I prefer restaurants do this. But then at least split the dish and serve it properly don't just throw an extra plate at me and and a $5 charge. Been here before once and decided to have brunch here after a hike in North Vancouver. Name of restaurant has barbecue on the end but didn't see any BBQ items on the menu. They are known for their "All Day" breakfast items and their food selection is geared towards more of a diner. I ordered the Benny's Classic made with their famous Yukon Bacon and my date had the Vegetarian Omelette. The portions were big but really nothing special. Our meals were served with diced hash browns and not your traditional pancake style ones that I had last time which I found tasted bland. The water they served with mint in a self serve bottle was nice and refreshing. We had two waitresses come by and checked on us with one just getting off her shift and made sure everything was ok. Signage shows the restaurant was established in 1926. Ambiance of the place had a First Nations theme with an assortment of totem poles and arts & crafts which you can purchase at the front of the restaurant. Once you enter the restaurant you are greeted with a cute little pond filled with an assortment of rubber duckies. This is a good place for brunch as they have big portions and the food is good. I had their Yukon style bacon and eggs dish. There was really a generous amount of hash brown under those bacons, egg and toasts. I finished it but my stomach was telling me that I shouldn't have as I was so sluggish after. A big hit and miss when it comes to the food here so exercise caution. I got the Steak and Mushroom Pie, mom got the Traditional Meat Loaf and dad got the Beef Dip Sandwich. First thing I noticed for my meal before ordering was that it came with mash potatoes so I was going to ask my server if instead of mash potatoes I could have extra veggies. Well I got as far as "..and could I sub out" and was immediately cut off and sternly told they don't allow any subs of any kind and do I still want mash potatoes or not. A little mad at her tone and upset she wouldn't even let me finish asking my question I told her just to leave the mashed potatoes off. Food came and I was missing my garlic bread as well. As for the food, the steak and mushroom pie was quite good. The pie top was flaky but extremely dry so it didn't really work if you tried to cut straight down and get a clean piece of the pie top plus a steak chunk in gravy. Your best bet would be to chop out up the top and give it a quick mix in the gravy first. The steak was cooked perfect but I was expecting a little more meat to be honest. The mushroom chunks were just about the same size as the chicken so when it's about 50/50 there wasn't all that much meat. The seasonal veggies were also a let down. I think it was just various kinds of squash and potato chunks so not any kind of variety. They were also covered in a seasoning that lessened the flavor and made them off putting after a few bites so I didn't eat much of those. The highlight of the meal was mom's meat loaf though. I don't have meat loaf often but this was incredibly good! It was moist and had a little more sautéed onions mixed in than I'm used to(which I loved) because it gave a little extra texture to each bite. And the tomato sauce on top was also delicious! But mom also had the same reservations about the seasoning on the veggies and she didn't eat much of hers either. Even if a restaurant doesn't allow substitutions, the least your server could do is let you finish asking before explaining they wouldn't be able to accommodate your request rather than rudely cutting you off. The steak and mushroom pie was good but nothing that blew my mind. The meatloaf was the winner of the night though and although I wouldn't eat here again, if you're thinking about eating here, I would suggest getting the meat loaf. I was going to say you might be better off asking if your seasonal veggies can come without that seasoning but I honestly don't know if they would allow that given my negative experience with this waiter. read more

I was looking for something to order via Door Dash for breakfast and found that they offered Tomahawk Barbeque. After hearing a lot about the place, some good and some bad I wanted to give them a try. I ordered the klondike breakfast and could not have been more disappointed. It was bland, so very, very bland. The scrambled eggs were food, but overall flavourless and the bacon generic. It was not entirely awful, but for all the hype it was just so bland and I could have made something much better at home. I understand Covid, I understand being shortstaffed. And I usually have lots and lots of patience during these times I do however have a problem when a server totally forgets your table and brings coffee and service to everyone else. Heard a lot of good things about this place. It's been around forever and is pretty much an institution. Parking is available beside the building. The theme seems to be First Nations, with the totem poles outside and the rustic interior. The inside is a bit quirky and looks almost like a museum, with all the figurines. I especially liked the back wall with the paddles and sculptures. The place does feel quite dated (say 1960s), but I assume that's intentional. Staff were friendly. The place has a nice cozy feel. Even though the place is listed as a barbecue, the food selection is more like a diner. I had the organic roast beef dinner. Nice moist slabs of meat with plenty of gravy and potatoes. Delicious and filling. The other reviews seem to be hit and miss, but this place really is just an old fashioned diner serving low key comfort food. Nothing wrong with that. read more

BACON. Must eat Canadian Bacon in Canada Do you ever make a list of things you want to do when in a new city? I do. That was one of them. YUKON BREAKFAST That is the first thing listed on the menu so that's what I ordered. The 6 slices of Yukon bacon are thinly sliced maple smoked round strips of (Canadian) bacon, and they cook this very well. Yummmm. It wasn't crispy like American bacon, but more like a thick prosciutto, fried. It was a great addition to the eggs, hashbrown and thick cut toast/bread. I don't know why our "Canadian bacon" in the US looks more like round ham, because our version looks nothing like this. EGGS BENEDICT So this dish was also very good but my husband had to steal some of my bacon because he said he wanted to taste the bacon flavor without the sauce. Grrr. Get your own bacon. PANCAKES This was also a hit with the kids, but you can get pancakes anywhere. Get the bacon. NO RESERVATIONS We got to the restaurant at 8am when they opened so it wasn't crowded, but I've heard that later in the day the wait can get quite long, in part due to the exposure they got on triple D. LOCATION No visible sign from the road. If you are on Marine Drive, turn south on Phillip and it will be on your left, behind the Mercedes dealership. We drove past it three times before finding it. Look for the white totem poles that look like they are in front of a house. That's the entrance. The kids said one of the totem poles looks like it's saying "put your seatbelt on". OK, if you don't know where this place is you might just miss it. Make sure your MAP on your smart phone is great, keep an eye open for some totem poles in the front and find some parking either in the back or right up front cause this place is the BUSINESSSSSSSSSSSSS! Ok, first of all, the brewed coffee there is just great. I drink a lot of coffee and usually I am NOT impressed at ANY breakfast. This one is a MUST drink! Next, the BACON, ahhh yes, I said BACON. Thy have this yukon bacon that is like a cross between canadian bacon and sliced bacon and you know what....dang it is good stuff. The flavor, how they cook it a little crispy, and the texture is JUST right. Did I also say that our waitress was very helpful and super kind. I wish I had gotten her name to mention it here. She was informative about the menu, refilled my coffee, and also gave us the skinny on how to order. She was something else. Then, comes the pancakes and the rest of the breakfast. I find the food ok. Nothing too special. One time I went with my sister and another friend. My sister and I shared the steak which was huge. The plate was huge as well. However, food here is not cheap for the location and decor and the kind of service you get. But again I managed to share the steak with my sister and we were both full at the end of the day. So its not too bad. The place was not busy for some reason at around 8pm. The table paper in front of us was interesting. It was a map. Decor wise was ok. Its definitely has that feel of the old house. Washroom is a bit ghetto. There are parking outside for free. Not bad. The last time we came here was about a year ago. This was a restaurant I frequented when I worked next door and we would sometimes eat breakfast and lunch there and on occasion dinner as well if we worked overtime. It has been a while since I ate here but it was almost like I never left. Parking is better but the decor is still the same and the food was just as I remembered it. Went for breakfast on Sunday. I ordered poached eggs and dry toast. I was delivered easy over with buttered toast. My friend got one coffee and Never asked again if she wanted more. Maybe the Host should have been going around and topping up coffee??? The positive was that I received my new correct order quite quickly! This place has seen better days. It's best days are behind it and it seems no one cares and they're willing to ride on their former name. No host or hostess came to greet us, so we waited at the front with no indication of what we should do. For a smaller restaurant they had more than enough people working but no one knew whose job was whose. A small not so complicated diner menu, but after placing our orders we waited over an hour for food. Service was terrible from the start, waiting 15min to even take our orders and forgetting to provide someone's drink and having to re-ask what they ordered. Food wasn't even that great after waiting an hour, for the price there's much better options in the area. Ordered: The Clubhouse - i found the portion sizes quite small here. The turkey meat in the sandwich was on the dry side. The fries were good. Service was good, we were greeted as soon as we walked in. Got waters right away. The server checked on us. We saw this place on "Triple D's" and decided to give it a try. However I didn't try a dish that was featured on the episode, so maybe that was a mistake on my behalf. My friend got the beef dip and enjoyed it, but again, it was pretty small. If i am in the area again i would give it a second chance, but i wouldn't drive out to North Van just for this place. So the place is filled with First Nation products like weavings, carvings, etc. And some pretty bad stereotyping to boot like pictures of paper feather hats for kids. I ordered the Yukon Style Bacon and Eggs (14.45). I found the bacon to be very meaty but super greasy and was more akin to back bacon than the strips I was hoping for, oh wells! They were surprisingly lean though. The hash browns were cubed and had a nice crunchiness to them. They have a house brand hot sauce to go with your eggs and meats if you'd like, but I'd avoid it. Totally over-hyped. Decorations were good, the paper liner mat is interesting and the burger toppings are unique, but that's where the good things stop. The burger patty was so small compared to the toppings that you can hardly taste it. Probably because it was thin and not juicy at all, you can't taste the meat itself. We came to Tomahawk Barbecue because we had heard a lot of good things about it. It is indeed somewhat difficult to find, mostly because, outside of a small sign outside the front door, there's nothing to identify the building as being a well known restaurant. On the inside, the tribute to Canadian First Nations culture is immediately obvious. In fact, it's so obvious it's borderline over the top. As we sat at our table, we found the placemat to be a distorted map of North America annotated with various amusing comments about different cities and regions. We ordered a spicy Thai chicken soup to start, and for my entree I ordered the special: roast beef, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. When I asked the waitress how the Yorkshire pudding was made, she had to go back to the chef and ask before she came back and reported that it was a batter baked at 400 degrees until it resembled a muffin. That didn't sound that interesting to me, so I decided to get the vegetables instead. The roast beef was very tender and juicy, and the mashed potatoes were creamy and buttery. There was one problem; I spread the butter on the vegetables, only to find an unpleasant surprise; what I thought was butter was really horseradish! Looked exactly like butter to me. For dessert I got a piece of cherry pie, accompanied by one of their locally bottled black cherry sodas. Made for an interesting and excellent combination. Overall I enjoyed my meal here and would be delighted to come back again the next time we're in Vancouver. read more

Before doing our tourist expedition to the Capilano Bridge, we needed to eat! We were recommended this place for their great breakfast and short drive from the Capilano Bridge. So we were off... We get there I think around 10am and the place was pretty busy. We had to wait about ten minutes before we were seated. I guess this place is famous for their Yukon bacon so I had to go with that. My friend and I end up ordering the Campfire (the smaller version of the Yukon Bacon and Eggs) and my two other friends order the Tomahawk Traditional. I also ordered the Cranberry juice which apparently is freshly delivered to the restaurant every morning. I had to try this out... never had that before. When we got our food, our eyes glistened as we were about to tear up some food! Everything looked so good. The Yukon bacon looked different from what I was accustomed to. It was a circular slice of bacon.... not the long rectangular strip I'm used to looking at. Either way, it smelled great and I took a bite into that first. Delicious! Perfect texture where it's wasn't too crunchy or too soft and with a hint of sweetness too. I then had the hash browns which were probably the best hash browns I have ever had. Cut into small cubes, these hash browns were crunchy and flavorful... no oily taste either! I then take a sip of my cranberry juice... Whoa that's GOOOOOOD! That's cranberry juice?!? This time I take a gulp! The juice tasted and smelled so fresh. It was real thick and pulpy too... the way I like it. What's crazy too is that it didn't have that strong, almost bitter taste like all cranberry juices have out there. I wish I had a glass right now. Since Canada is also known for their syrup, I had to take one of my friend's pancakes and syrup in return for hash browns and toast. It was worth the trade because I swear the pancakes with the syrup were off the hook too! Probably not the best pancake I've had but definitely the best syrup I've had. The syrup was light with just the right amount of sweetness. It didn't overpower the taste of the pancake but complemented it very well. If I were to come to Vancouver again, I would make sure to drop by and have breakfast here. Not only did my friends and I have the best breakfast ever but we were able to meet the owner of Tomahawk, Chuck. He was a very nice guy. He was the one to ring up our bill and also made the time to talk to us a bit at the register. Our waitress also was really friendly and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. A fantastic find! Been watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and thought it would be fun to check out some of the places Guy recommends. Let's just say he recommends them for a reason. Good ol' home style cooking here. It's the oldest restaurant in Vancouver which is interesting in itself. It's a great change from all the commercial establishments around town these days. This spot has heart and you can taste it in the gravy! The garlic bread alone was addictive and my guy claims it's the best beef dip sandwich he's ever had, and he's had more than his fair share. We'll certainly be back! Take note though, it was on triple D for a reason, no white linen cloths and modern renovations in this place, just a large helping of tasty, hearty food. read more
