Despite the name, I've never actually had ramen here. This is my go-to to-go lunch sushi place and I live maybe at most 7 min away. The lunch-only special is only $23 ($25+ tax), and it comes with 7 pieces of nigiri, 6 pieces of a california roll, a miso soup, and a side salad. I don't know of a better deal anywhere. I've been going for probably close to 2 years and the quality is always great, and I get takeout probably at least 2-3x a month. I am honestly contemplating giving Tom Sam Ramen a glass reusable container since I order so often there but haven't done so yet to reduce waste. I prefer the sushi nigiri special more than the sashimi special because there are more kinds of fish. Sashimi includes very thick pieces of fish, but they were maybe only 4 kinds repeated. If you're not in the mood for sushi, then their chicken karaage is also fire. Chicken is super juicy and tender. Flavor is also on point and one of my favorites in the area. Their ramen is also a solid option. Daly City is always cold and foggy, so nothing hits harder than a bowl of hot garlic ramen. Ok at this point, this is a note to my future self. Tonight we dined at Tom San Ramen, and enjoyed the Melt-In-Your-Mouth Roll as usual. I really want to try the other rolls but without fail, I always end up choosing the same roll. Welp. The boo got the chicken teriyaki entree that comes with salad, miso, and rice at about $15. We shared the following: Soft Shell Crab at $10, 1/5* I'd pass on this unless you're getting spicy ramen maybe. Idk. I don't like the breading. It's fried too thick, if you know what I mean... I like my soft shell crab a bit light and you know...soft. Ama Ebi with fried head at $13, 2/5 The fried head was meaty and delicious. The raw part was not it, which sucked because I really love how sweet ama ebi can be. Seared Toro with Uni at $15, 2/5* I really wanted to love this, but also a bit fishy, could barely taste the Uni. I would've gotten the Santa Barbara Uni nigiri, but it was about $27. Maybe next time, but still!! Lol. Madai at $9, 3/5* I don't usually order red snapper. It was refreshing and I liked the texture. Salmon Toro at $9, 3/5* I loved the fish to rice ratio here. It was the nigiri I started with which set the precedent. As a result, the rest of the nigiri were mostly a let down (sadly). Now onto the service, 10/10! They were really on top of it. Plates/trash cleared, drinks always topped off, checked in on several times, gave recs, showed many thanks, and even offered an extra table since ours was getting cramped. Came in for dinner and tried their truffle ramen and was pleasantly surprised. The broth was light, clear and full of truffle flavor without being overwhelming. The thinly sliced chashu stood out since most ramen spots serve thicker cuts, but I preferred the thinner slice and it was really good. No wait on a Friday night on Valentines weekend. Service was fast and omakase was a great deal. I was pleasantly surprised at how big the sashimi pieces were. It came with sushi rice on the side. Everything was pretty good except for the hotate. It was a little chewy and not as sweet as others I've had. Still a great deal and I wouldn't mind getting it again. We had to flag someone down to ask what we were eating as it wasn't explained when it was served. Also tried the truffle ramen. I think the meat was chicken instead of pork. Wow, this place is sad. Beef that is chewing and as tough as any dog toy. Prices that are similar to downtown SF, but lacking the quality or the ambiance. This bento was bad. Like I said the beef was awful. Rice was old. Salad was meh, the only edible thing was the tempura. My melt in mouth roll with spicy tuna ans inagi was a whopping $18 for a small roll that had lukewarm rice and fish. Rice should never be falling apart and fish should be cold and unagi should be hot/warm....this roll was a mess. Let's first talk about how reasonable the pricing is! For chirashi during lunch time, it's about $21! You get all different types of sashimi and it's over sushi rice. You can taste how fresh the fish is and on the plus side, the wasabi is the real deal! I ordered the bento box with salmon teriyaki + sashimi, which I forgot to take a photo of. Should've checked Yelp first though, because after reading the reviews, it lined up exactly with our experience. We ordered the Chirashi, and that was the highlight. The sashimi melts in your mouth, laid over perfectly seasoned sushi rice. For $21? Totally worth it. The ramen, however, was oily and lacked flavor. Disappointing, especially since I assumed it would be a specialty. The beef teriyaki was dry and needed more seasoning. Overall, the hot dishes didn't deliver. Also, something I couldn't unsee: servers wearing gloves while handling food, then touching cleaning rags and other surfaces -- all without changing gloves. Gloves are not a substitute for handwashing, and seeing that really took away from the dining experience. We visited Tom San Ramen this past weekend and had a great time. Service was not good. We arrived at 5pm on a Saturday night and for 30 min, we were the only customers in the restaurant. Our server didn't give us menus and we had to grab them ourselves, the tables weren't set up properly (some of us were missing utensils, plates, etc.) and we had to keep asking for water refills. Food was great and the portions were big! My husband ordered the katsu dinner combo and there was so much food! We ordered the shoyu ramen which had a really nice and light broth. Noodles were good. The meat was on the leaner side, but overall, it was a solid bowl of ramen. I ordered some nigiri and all of the fish was super fresh and there wasn't a ton of rice which is just the way I like it. Agedashi tofu was great, but it was served dry and with a side of teriyaki type sauce-- just different from the norm. Same with their tempura. Hugh pieces, but the breading was a little different than what I'm used to. It was more like breading used for fish and chips. Still delicious- just a little different and more heavy. Headed over for lunch with a friend at around 11:30 am and since it was opening time, we got seated immediately for our party of 2. They had a large variety of items from sashimi to noodles to a special lunch menu. Their lunch menu was tempting from the prices to the food included in each set, my friend tried the salmon teriyaki which she enjoyed with the California roll. Hamachi and Toro Nigiri - I wanted to try two of my favorite types of fish which were the hamachi and toro. The prices were reasonable and the pieces were fresh and large. The toro was the standout for me, fatty and melted in my mouth. Romeo & Juliet Roll - I saw this was a popular item people ordered and I loved the flavors of this roll. The salmon with scallops were fresh and had a great texture. The mayo and spicy sauce with the roe on top added crunchiness, creaminess and a light punch of flavor that made it well balanced. With a current average of 4 stars, I don't understand so how many things can go wrong for our experience here. Started off when we were looking at the menu, a young lady with a face mask says, " you ready?" No hi, no you like something to drink first? When we asked for another minute, she abruptly walks away. The table behind me that sat down after we ordered got all their food first. I flagged down a gal and she immediately said "it's coming", as if she already knew it was taking too long and what I was going to ask. The spicy ramen wasn't bad. Not the best but not bad. Mild heat and actually had torched brussel sprouts, which is a first. The rolls weren't bad either. The 'Melt in Your Mouth' roll was actually very soft and did melt in my mouth, but both rolls were drenched with a very sweet eel sauce that covered up most of the other flavors. No one ever came by and refilled tea, asked if we needed anything or any kind of interaction. The girl with the mask just came by, dropped of the check and left. As you can tell from the pictures, the cuts are quite thick with a great selection hand picked by the chef. I'd say its one of the more affordable omakase plates compared to its competitors. For 25$, i got 12 peices of BIG cuts of sashimi with actually grated wasabi and a portion of sushi seasoned rice. I ate half of it and had to save half for another day. While i was disappointed to be served agedashi tofu without the dashi broth, it served with a concentrated sweet soy sauce. the tofu itself was fried very nicely and kept crunchy through the meal and the sweet soy sauce was good. Monday, July 1, 2024. After an appointment at Kaiser, I decided to have lunch at my old neighborhood at Westlake. Had this place bookmarked for a while now since reading Cherylynn's review during Covid. Just like with gas prices that have skyrocketed and inflation up the yin yang, the sticker shock wasn't so shocking anymore. I still remember when ramen was priced between $8 to $12 back in the day and anything above $15 was considered extravagant. Ahhhh, how I long to go back to those days. Anyways, here we are and we gotta roll with the punches. I arrived less than an hour before closing so I was promptly greeted and seated simultaneously by a lovely host/server. I perused the menu, and my inquiries were quickly answered with that typical politeness from a Japanese restaurant. Not sure if she was Japanese, though. I decided on the Spicy Miso Ramen ($17.00) and the Chef's Choice of Sashimi Regular ($26.00). I also ordered a cup of Green Tea, and my order came with side of Miso Soup and House Green Salad that typically comes with Carrot Ginger Dressing. The set of Sashimi is 10 pieces of thick, chunky cuts that were expertly sliced to preserve the freshness and delicious. There were three slices each of Salmon and Red Snapper and two slices each of Hamachi and Tuna. The soy sauce they provided was the Kikkoman Light, which I actually prefer over the regular soy sauce so I can taste and enjoy the flavors of the sashimi even more. I'd say, the quality of the Chef's selection was quite superb and impressive. As for the ramen, while I enjoyed the bite of the noodles, this was just a tad too spicy for my taste. I'd usually slurp the broth, but I avoided it and just went for the noodles, the Pork Chasu and egg. But for the sake of inflation, why can't these Ramen joints give us the whole egg instead of just a half slice? C'mon, for the prices you're charging I'm pretty certain a whole egg is not gonna cut into your profit margin by a shell. Regardless, we're all getting poached. On the sunny side up, the Sashimi they serve here is top-notch and I'll order that next time instead of the Ramen. This place is always suffering from terrible service. The other day I was there to eat with family . We had notice another table had edamame as starter.. we didn't get any so I asked the server if it comes with it she mumbled yes or something .. then I said we never got ours she said do you want it? I said yes if it comes with it . For the child.. she gave it to us then charged me nearly $5 for a plate of edamame.. I could buy a box at Costco for the same cost. Terrible . Not want to come here again. I had not realize that's what she did otherwise I wouldn't have tipped her 18%. Terrible service. Misleading. read more

Love their crab lover because it tastes refreshing and light. Their lion king roll is awesome, but not a huge fan of the sauce on top of the lion king. Miso ramen is yummy. I like their brussels sprout and soft boiled egg. Tempura is lightly coated with batter that tastes delightful and not greasy. Hamachi Kama is great. read more

Even though I had passed by Tom San Ramen a number of times over the last few years, I can't say it struck me to immediately walk inside. A big part of that is because I was heading elsewhere to eat along this stretch of Southgate, but I have to admit there didn't seem to be much that set them apart from the many other ramen joints around. The reviews are pretty decent, but I never seemed to hear much about them, whether it be from friends or fellow Yelpers. Now that I've been (multiple times, in fact), my only question is how have we all slept on the ramen here for so long?? Inside Tom San Ramen, the vibe of this place is pretty chill and cozy, but it can get a little busy for dinner on weekends. As such, you can probably expect to run into a wait, especially if you're in a larger group, but it usually doesn't take long if your party is four or less as there's a good amount of seating. As for the menu, despite how ramen is in their name, there are only about a half dozen types offered. Instead, most of the offerings here are actually made up of sushi options, along with an interesting array of appetizers, dinner entrees/combos, yaki udon, and a couple of unique fried rice dishes (uni with scallop and unagi). -- ANKIMO - Monkfish Liver...$11 Rather underwhelming, to be honest. The ankimo tasted fine, for the most part, but the consistency was really wet and mushy. Each piece was falling apart in my chopsticks and it lacked any semblance of firmness. -- TRUFFLE RAMEN - Light Chicken and Pork Bone Broth Infused with House Blend Shoyu Tare with Sous Vide Pork Chashu, Shoyu Marinated Egg, Ankimo, Green Onions, and Truffle Paste...$17.95 All in all, pretty solid. The noodles had a really nice chew to them, the egg was cooked perfectly, the broth is light yet super flavorful, and I liked how the truffle was more complementary than overpowering. Also, I liked how tender and juicy the chashu was, but I wish they had been meatier. -- TORI KARAAGE - Japanese Style Fried Chicken...$8 Not bad, and reasonably priced, but more standard than special. Each piece was decently crispy and the chicken was fairly moist. The batter definitely could've used a bit more seasoning, but at least the aioli helped. -- KAMO SHOYU RAMEN - Kamo Duck Broth Prepared with Farm-Raised Duck, Vegetables, Onion, and Ginger Oil Infused with Dried Scallops...$20.95 I wasn't sure what to expect with this, but it was terrific. Deliciously cooked egg, awesome noodles, and a broth that was deep and rich with flavor. Plus, the slices of duck were awesome - tasty, tender, and just slightly fatty. Yum! -- SALMON LOVER ROLL - Salmon Skin and Cucumber Topped with Fresh Salmon, Avocado, and Eel Sauce...$14.50 Ehh...this was fine. The salmon skin was broiled nicely and still had some meat on them while the slices of salmon on top were surprisingly thick. That said, the vinegar they use for their sushi rice has an extremely acidic tanginess to it. -- SASHIMI OMAKASE - Chef's Choice of Sashimi (9 Pieces)...$38 The good - budget friendly, not limited to the "basic" fish, generous cuts, freshly grated wasabi, and the quality, for the most part, is pretty good. In particular, I liked the toro, hamachi, and salmon. The bad - the ankimo, several pieces, like the tamago and the hotate (sob), fell flat, and the bowl of sushi rice was bleh. Even though Tom San may not have an extensive selection of ramens, the two that I've tried are both pretty legit and easily the best things I've had here. As for the sushi and sashimi, they aren't too shabby either, but personally, I would probably just stick with the latter given how funky their sushi rice tasted. Sure, it may have just been an off night, but even if it was slightly better, I still might just stick to the ramen considering how delicious it is! read more
