Wow, what a cool little bag shop! I've heard about Tom Bihn for years from a friend who's a huge fan of them, but had never had the chance to visit their tiny Seattle showroom until recently. It's literally located inside of their production facility, where industrial sewists are working hard to create these resilient bags. As an amateur bagmaker myself, I can see the work, thought, and details that are put into each bag. And while their prices are high, the craftsmanship is worth it. They use extremely quality materials, and add extra touches that make these bags perfect for travel. For example, many of the bags have a brightly colored interior so things are easier to find. Thoughtful pockets abound, too - from water bottle pockets to tiny spots to slip your passport or other important documents. I'm excited to report that I finally dove in and bought my first Tom Bihn (a cafe bag for my upcoming vacay) - the hardest part was choosing a color, as there were so many options available. Can't wait to use my new bag, and I'll 100% be back again (or maybe online) to get a companion piece as budget allows. If you're into bags, this is a cool place to visit. My husband has a few Tom Bihn bags and since we were going to Seattle, we of course had to visit the showroom located in an Industrial Center. We took an Uber from downtown to there and it was $48 roundtrip including tips. It was definitely worth it! Masks are required, so have one handy with you or they have some by the entrance. When you walk in, you'll see many workers with sewing machines, customer service, and we were greeted by Cody in the showroom. Cody was so pleasant to talk with and helped us with color options, bag options, and didn't rush or pressure us at all. My husband ending up getting a few bags and a bag that is still in production so that was pretty awesome. It was nice to see the bags in person before purchasing. A little side note: If you purchase multiple bags, they only have boxes for you to put them into and no shopping bags. We were able to put the bags into the other bags we purchased. read more

I heard about this place through Facebook and although I had just purchased a bunch of travel gear from another company, I was looking for a pouch to keep my medicine bottles. Luckily, Facebook advertised a 20% off sale, which I took advantage of. Shipping was extremely fast and I ordered two of the pouches (a large and a small) because I wasn't sure which one would work. Both pouches are really nice and well made. One of them holds my medicine bottles perfectly and the other one holds my blood sugar monitor, so I'm glad I got two of them. Tom Bihn's products are a work of magic. I was in the market for a new work bag, and stumbled upon Tom Bihn's bags in a news article. Initially, I was apprehensive about the high price tag, but eventually bit the bullet and placed an order. After a few weeks of use, I think that the bags are functionally superb. The pockets are so well thought out, and the inclusion of o-rings help welcome an entire suite of additional accessories you can add to customize the hell out of the bag. Furthermore, the removability of the straps help ensure that if you don't need the extra support, you can remove the unnecessary flappy clips for a more streamlined look. Additionally, the ballistic nylon feels very premium, and given the reviews left by others, will be able to last very long. It's so good, that I decided to purchase a second, green, Synik 22 for my photography use. Great product! Great service! You should try it out. read more

Tom Bihn is a very cool store hidden deep in the Industrial District. They sell high-quality and thoughtfully engineered backpacks, bags, and accessories. I don't think this brand is very well known, but they do have a small, cult-like (in a good way) following. You can also find many product videos and reviews on YouTube. Their retail showroom is pretty small and in the same building as their factory. You can actually see the sewing machines only a few feet away! It is so nice to see a business that was founded in Seattle and actually makes its products here. Their website has a short bio of every employee, including the factory workers. Their regular store hours are Monday through Friday, from 6:30 AM to 3 PM. They are also open on occasional Saturdays. One time my husband e-mailed them and they agreed to let him in early one day, which was really cool. I think their customer service is outstanding. We went on a Saturday and they set out homemade cookies (made by the CEO!) and really good coffee (made with a Moccamaster)! I always ask a ton of questions when shopping and the salespeople there were extremely knowledgable and kind. I highly recommend this company. What I love about Tom Bihn bags is the outstanding quality, the impeccable craftsmanship, the thoughtful design and almost-bullet-proof materials used throughout the bag! Best product from the best company. Seriously. I travel more than 250 days each year and carry a brain bag laptop bag with about 40 pounds of gear in in. I purchased it new in 2009, and it is still in pretty much new condition, with the exception of the zipper pulls (heavy metal pulls) that broke off. They asked me to return the bag, replaced the zipper, and paid shipping both ways. Seriously. The bag itself is great, and super protective and roomy. Before this bag, my average lifespan for a laptop bag was about 2 years, then they would fall apart. I figure that I would have bought 4-5 bags, at a cost of $800-1000 if I had not found this company. At this point I feel like I have been paid $800 to carry their bag. Located in the industrial district it was a bit tricky to find them but once you arrive to their the business strip with Tom Bihn inside they have their signature logo outside of the shop. Having the opportunity to see people working on bags and holding the products we were to buy was awesome. Whoever is working the sales floor typically walks up to you and greets you as you continue to stop. The first time my husband and I visited we saw Tom Bihn himself on the sales floor interacting with customers, pretty cool! I've owned a Tom Bihn bag for some 7-8 years now. I first bought of their Messenger bags to tote my iBook G4 and stuff to school back when I taught class part time at George Mason University. I ordered it with the Brain Cell made for the physical dimensions of the iBook G4 - the Brain Cell is a padded protective sleeve that the computer slides into - and then into the bag. When I sold the iBook G4 and was issued a PowerBook G4 and then a first generation MacBook Pro for work - I ordered the appropriate Brain Cell for those notebooks (same Brain Cell fit both notebooks). And all of these Brain Cells work with the same Tom Bihn bags. They've also repaired my bag once when part of it needed to be restitched - and they sent me new plastic buckle snaps when both of them eventually broke - all for free! Then - with the new 15" MacBook Pro (Early 2009) I just got for work - I needed a new Brain Cell as the dimensions are slightly different than the previous generation. I just received it today - looks great, sturdy, fits in the existing bag - no complaints! I am now starting to eye, however, their new TSA-approved compliant laptop bags - which allow you to keep the computer secured in the bag without removing it and risking them dropping and damaging your computer. I always look for items that will last as long as possible. The bags at Tom Bihn are made of ballistic nylon. These things are made to be rip-proof, tear-proof, and nigh-indestructible. I got the "Super Ego" laptop bag. This thing is perfect for my needs. It's a huge bag and holds all my geek gear. It's the best made bag I've ever seen, and I know I won't have to buy another bag for an eon. The bags are on the spendy side, but compare that to a cheap bag that you have to replace all the time. This is where I'll buy any bags in the future for the shear attention to detail and quality of product. Update 6/3/12: My 'Super Ego' laptop bag I've had for a couple years now, and it's still in perfect condition. No frays, no tears, no damage to the bag at all. I started with a laptop bag and that has to be one of the best engineered bags I own. I took a month off last year and traveled all over Europe and ordered a backpack, stuff sack, packing cubes, the minimalist wallet, travel money belt, and even carabiner. Earlier this year, I purchased the tri-Star bag for short excursions. Tom Bihn products are outstanding in quality material and craftsmanship. For many of their products, you are able to customize the bag to exactly what you want with extra add-ons. I am so impressed by the quality and ingenuity of their bags.....and I'm an engineer!!!! I know I shouldn't be nerding out over some bags, but they are that amazing! And the company stands behind their product with a great warranty. Who even has lifetime warranties on their products anymore? On a side note, I also purchased a bunch of their reusable face masks they've been making during the COVID-19 shutdown. Of course these are the best masks I've tried (I've tried 5 different types from other companies and these are the best and so well designed). They come in two sizes. The large fits my white boy nose and chin. The regular size fit quite a few different face shapes....even my neighbor who exclaimed "I can't believe this mask fit my Asian nose". When I travel, I travel light. In fact, I only travel with carryons. My friends think I'm nuts, but it's very doable with just a little extra planning, and with the help of some good travel gear. In my opinion, there is no other travel gear manufacturer that makes better travel bags than Tom Bihn. His stuff NEVER comes apart. EVER. All of the stitching on the seams on his bags are reinforced and COVERED so you never wind up with fraying fabric that catches on the zippers. The zippers are hefty, heavy-duty and will not ever come apart--if you've ever traveled with luggage where the zippers break, you are screwed! The fabric never even wears out. You can leave them on the floor or the ground outside and not worry about wearing a hole in them. But it's not just the workmanship. Tom personally designs all of the products, and they keep honing and improving on models they've released, be it a new pocket here or a new buckle there. And the designs? They're wonderful. Everything is practical, and very cleverly thought out to make things easy to use. Finally, there's their famous customer service. If you EVER encounter issues, you just contact them and they will work with you. Plus, they have a very active discussion board online at their website where you can chat with fellow like-minded travelers. They constantly keep up with the evolving social media landscape as well; they have both a Facebook and Twitter presence to which their staff are always participating in. Once you get your first Tom Bihn bag, you will be hooked. If you get a primary carryon bag, you will likely want to get various stuff sacks and organizers to put in your carryon. Then you'll join the discussion boards, and start sharing your thoughts about your new purchases. And before you know it, you'll become a completely loyal Tom Bihn customer! The ONLY down side is that the larger bags aren't cheap. First class company, great customer following, dedicated forum where folks share their experiences with the products. I've had a TriStar which served me on numerous trips and a Co-pilot that functions as my personal carry on and every day light business bag. Both are made of very high quality ballistic nylon and have handled everything that I've thrown at it. The Co-pilot especially, now that I rarely carry a laptop anymore, instead carry a Note 8 smartphone with additional external battery, I don't need to carry my Tumi Expandable briefcase as often and the Co-Pilot has performed flawlessly. Always have a Tom Bihn Absolute Strap on all of my carry bags and this strap is the finest in the industry. Never have had a single problem with any of my Tom Bihn gear. I love my Tom Bihn bag! I bought the "Buzz" for a trip abroad last September and for my daily walking commute to work. I've tried backpacks and messenger bags and this one has the best of both worlds. It stays flat against one's back but only has one strap across the chest. The strap is padded and comfortable, it has a heavy-duty quick-release buckle and a handy little compartment for a phone, music player or other gadget. On vacation I keep my camera in it so I can quickly whip it out and take a picture. On my commute I secure my headphone cords in its velcro flap to keep them from bouncing around. The Buzz has a padded compartment perfect for a small laptop--and Tom Bihn has a database of which laptops will fit in which bags. This is an invaluable resource for laptop owners. It's also got a pouch on the side that is perfect for holding a bottle of water or umbrella. There are so many things to like about Tom Bihn's bags: attention to detail, quality, comfort, snappy design and they're locally made. In fact, their manufacturing and showroom are in Seattle in the SoDo district. There were probably 40 sewing machines running with employees making the product right in front of me. There was a small display rack with all of their products on the right when you entered. A very helpful lady came and helped with all their products. She spent probably 45 minutes with me going over styles, fabrics, and colors until I found the perfect bag. I LOVE my Tom Bihn bag. I have the Ego - and it's big enough for my normal-sized laptop, some folders, a binder, my lunch, and my gym clothes (not shoes, just clothes). They're only a tiny bit more expensive than comparably-sized Patagonia or Timbuk2 bags. But Tom Bihn bags are so much more well-made and well-thought out - the pocket sizes and locations are perfect. I spent a few extra dollars and got the springy Absolute shoulder strap - it's so comfortable. If you can get there, I highly recommend going to the showroom (only open one afternoon per week) - I got to test out the bag by loading all of my stuff inside it, and we got a quick tour from Tom himself! I love how these bags are made locally - yay for supporting Seattle businesses. read more

I have been a huge Tom Bihn fan since the now-defunct Academichic blog introduced me to the Aeronaut and the idea of packing cubes. I love my Aeronaut, and used it extensively for two three-week trips in Europe, as well as a two-week trip in the US, in the middle of living in a dorm in France. I've used the packing cubes and travel trays to organize my stuff on a day-to-day basis. (When you pack up and move from the US to France for five months, you use what you can get!) Today I visited the Tom Bihn showroom in South Seattle. The guy in the showroom was friendly and knowledgeable. And seeing some of the bags in person was invaluable to solidifying my list of bags that I want. For instance: I never, ever would have thought the Co-Pilot was so tiny! It's smaller than a textbook! Plus, the peek into the factory itself, with everyone sewing away, was fun and enlightening. Visiting the showroom, you are also much more likely to be able to purchase bags that are out of stock online or color selections that are either out of stock or not yet available online. The design of the bags is fantastic, you end up struck repeatedly by the degree of intelligence that goes into all of the little details. On top of that, quality and durability is amazing. I've been abusing my Ristretto for a year and a half, in cold Toronto winters (and hot Toronto summers!), and it still looks new. Not a loose stitch, not a flawed piece of fabric, not a single shortcut taken. The Aeronaut is the perfect max-size carryon, just great for 3-6 days of clothes and gear. I was delighted to find Tom Bihn's place right here in between my home and work. I picked up the Western Flyer for an upcoming trip to Paris; I'm into packing lighter than light and will be packing for a week with this and the Zephyr that I picked up when I returned to Tom Bihn's to get a shoulder strap. I've been a big fan of Chrome in the past, but as I looked at briefs/shoulder bags, I saw their Anton bag, while $40 less than the Zephyr that I ended up getting, is made in China and is getting poor reviews. I've unloaded a Chrome and a Tumi bag on CL, and when I'm not on my bicycle, I'm carrying the Zephyr. Their bags are very well designed and thought out, and you absolutely can't beat the quality. Man, I love me some bags. And I was on the hunt for something new to use for geocaching. (C'mon, I know I'm not the only geocacher out there in Yelp-land.) I surfed the Tom Bihn website a few times, but I'm a bit leary of buying a bag online without having ever touched one in real life. I'm a hands-on girl. ;) So a friend of mine convinced me to take a trek to their itty bitty shop in Sodo. It required taking a day off work because they don't have weekend hours (or didn't when I went) but it was well-worth the trip! I wound up with the "The Buzz" which is the sling-over backpack. It says it can fit a laptop in it, which I've never personally tried (as I don't have the money for a laptop), but upon seeing my bag, my dad ordered one online as well and he's able to carry his laptop in it. So we'll go ahead and say it works. That puppy is durable. Indestructable, really, and I've tried. I'm brutal on bags (despite my love for them) and my Buzz still looks good as new. It's gone geocaching with me, it goes to work with me (sometimes), and it occasionally takes trips with me. I'm looking forward to getting the Cafe bag, which is next on my wishlist. (Sizing is still being debated.) Not as many color options as Timbuk2 (my other workhorse bag), but that's okay - I don't require a designer look. When I went back to school, I knew I needed a better backpack. I now had to carry 30+ pounds or more regularly. I love my messenger bags, but unless I'm biking, it's painful to carry a lot of weight on one shoulder. I also wanted something that could help protect my laptop against the constant Seattle rain. These bags are designed like hiking backpacks so that you can adjust a variety of things about the fit. I'm very shortwaisted and most backpacks hang halfway down my rear, bumping it as I walk. Not a bad hiphop look, but it quickly starts to hurt my back. The laptop compartment suspends the laptop in the air so that if you set the backpack down on a wet surface, the laptop doesn't get wet. It still looks as nice as it did the day I bought it. I got a variety of organizational pouches which have been very helpful for me (a total slob). There is a reason why every review of Tom Bihn is 5 stars. The bags aren't cheap, but they last forever, are very well-designed down to minute details, are made locally here in Seattle rather than in overseas factories, and are generally just all kinds of awesome. Tom Bihn makes quality in an unsuspecting design. When you look at a Tom Bihn bag it looks just like any other bag you'd see around a city. You don't know (unless you know gear) that the bag is incredibly well made and costs a fair chunk of change, which is great. What I'm trying to say is that it's not a target for theft like say a typical high-end backpack is. In addition their sew shop is located right next to (and is connected to) their show room so you can actually see bags being made while you look at the products. There's something special about actually seeing your made in the USA bag ACTUALLY being made in the USA. If you are a Tom Bihn fan (or a fan of gear and sewing) then I'd highly recommend making the journey down to the Tom Bihn location. I'm in love with Tom Bihn! I was excited to visit their warehouse store because I was strictly an online customer up until then. It's a cool spot that is nothing how I imagined it to be. Once you walk in the door, there's a small area with all the items on a wall for display. It was pretty busy when we got there so there was a bit of a wait to be helped. But, while waiting, there's lots to see! The seamstresses are sitting right on the other side of the wall so you can see them hard at work. There's also a display board of all the different employees and some cute little tidbits about each of them. On another wall you can see people's personal pictures of their adventures with their Tom Bihn merch. I respect and support this brand (see their brand story on their website!). All of my bags and travel accessories I purchased from them have withstood many trips. I'd definitely recommend finding a way to save up and splurge on their items, you won't regret it! read more

I bought my Big Brain (now Brain Bag) backpack from Tom Bihn in 1999. I still use it everyday for work and when I travel - either for work or play. I use it as one of my carry-on bags. I stuff it with work documents, travel pillow, waist bag (purse), large lunch, thermos, and other items, such as giant bottles of water, extra clothes and shoes. My Big Brain still looks fabulous. There is just one little spot on the upper back side that shows a tiny bit of wear. And I do mean tiny. It washes beautifully, and it looks BRAND NEW when it's clean. Best zippers ever. I've purchased a couple of Brain Cells that fit inside the backpack over the years too. My laptops have been very well-protected to say the least. My daughter is starting a digital-media program and will be transporting a very expensive laptop back and forth every day. I'm about to place an order for a Brain Bag, Brain Cell and a few more accessories. My daughter freaked at the prices (as if she's paying for them), but I assured her that she will have her Brain Bag forever. Pricey, yes, as an up-front cost. If you're fortunate enough to live in the Seattle area, Tom Bihn is a local merchant. But even if you don't it's a first class outfit worth patronizing. Locally designed AND manufactured, it's nice to know that their great bags aren't being produced in sweatshop conditions. I own several of their bags. The luggage (Aeronaut) has seen tens of thousands of air miles. The TSA friendly laptop briefcase (sadly discontinued Checkpoint Flyer), likewise. And the backpack (Smart Alec), as well. Packing cubes, laptop sleeves, etc. etc. I could put any product I own back in their Seattle store and they would be indistinguishable from brand new items. Others have commented on TB backing their products when they need repair. I can't confirm that because over the years virtually nothing has ever gone wrong with anything I've purchased from Tom BIhn. The personal service from th sales staff is wonderful. Matt , knew all the answers, made eye contact, smiled, laughed and made me feel welcome. The range of bags is confusing for a beginner. I was able to bring in my old crappy laptop bag that i was replacing with a TB bag. I played, filled, adjusted and asked a ton of questions before i bought my Pilot bag. The owner walked thru the showroom as i was testing my bag. He looked right at me and smiled with pride. I am sure this is what makes this company and its staff, better than anybody else. Seeing the workroom and the sewers busy, made me proud to support the local made bag. The young fella who rang up my order was well trained, excited about his products and could not help me enough. I spent many a long days and nights searching for the best laptop bag I could find, and all roads led me to Tom Bihn. I've had my Empire Builder bag for 2 years now and it is by far the best laptop bag I or anyone that I know has ever owned. The construction on all of their bags are top notch, and it definitely feels good to buy American made products when they're of such high quality and standards. The custom sleeve concept works so well when you're changing or have more than one laptop so you don't need to buy a new bag every time. I've adjusted this review upward to a 3 based upon their customer service. I did email them regarding their return policy and was granted a full refund. I still think they make purchasing just too difficult with the location, minimal store hours, and return policy. And, I was not happy with the functioning of the zipper. I may give them another shot but only if I can find the time to get down to their store. Based on their return policy I wouldn't suggest purchasing online unless you know exactly what you want. This company is a total rip off. They ship a product, I wasn't too happy with the functioning of the zippers, and then charge you to return it. I was going to purchase a larger bag but can't take the chance of losing money again (lost $21 on the first order) if it too turns out not to be the right bag. They are primarily an online business so to charge their customers for returns is just plain bad customer service. Buy from Amazon instead, the quality of the Tom Bihn bags isn't worth the hassle or expense. read more
