Wow! Hadn't thought about this place in years, but they were my go-to sushi place when I lived near Poughkeepsie. I recall that they had one of the best quail egg sushi in memory. The chef behind the sushi bar was absolutely amazing. He would serve what we ordered, but would occasionally throw in little extras for us to try from time to time, which made the experience very special. I miss Tokyo Express. I don't even know where to begin with my overwhelming sense of disappointment the second I looked down at the tiny, pitiful rolls I ordered. Never have I seen sushi rolls as tiny as the ones here. I guess I'm just used to the generous sushi portions in SoCal where I can get quality, all-you-can-eat sushi for only $18. If you're a sushi snob like I am and aren't willing to fork over money for measly rolls that won't even fill you, then don't come here. Unfortunately, Poughkeepsie does not have too many options when it comes to sushi, much less Asian cuisine, so many people stop by here. Tokyo Express is still there serving fresh sushi and delicious rolls. they expanded a little bit and took over the tiny pizza joint that used to be next door. place looks almost exactly the same. simple interior decor, nothing fancy but has enough atmosphere to make you feel hip. lol i had the spicy boat tonight, sweetheart roll ,few pieces of salmon and eel sushi. nothing exotic. it is poughkeepsie after all. sushi in Poughkeepsie doesn't get better than this. i do suggest a large hot sake along with the food. it brings out the sweetness of the fish. read more

A great hole in the wall for sure! I am an absolutely huge sushi fan and this has been my go-to-place for years. The rolls here are creative and delicious. They are made a perfect size, not too small that you don't taste anything but the rice, but also not too large that you can't fit the piece into your mouth. The sauces paired with the rolls are perfect and complement the dishes well and don't overshadow the fish. Their sashimi is fresh and is cut well. The prices are super reasonable and the service is decent. It can take a bit longer on friday/saturday nights, especially when Vassar is in session but the food is well worth the wait. read more

I got their lunch sushi order. Two rolls with the soup and a salad, just right for one person and at $10.26 with tax, very cost-effective. It was ready for me in about five minutes and the staff was very courteous. Not the best sushi I've ever eaten but it was yummy and cheap. Definitely a good local option. read more

This *was* my favorite sushi place for several years until my most recent visit. The food was delicious and fresh. The service is usually...not the best or most welcoming, but it was never "bad" before. I didn't like that the server, the one who helps me 99% of the time on my visits, tried to sneak on a full priced specialty roll. She admonished me for not telling her I was ordering from that menu, despite it being in front of me the entire time I placed my order. This would have normally not given me any pause if she hadn't added on the tip, or "suggested gratuity" (on a party of one, is this standard?) for herself already. Nice try! I've sampled many sushi restaurants in the area and Tokyo Express is the best! Even on 'off nights' (food quality wise) they still match, and in some respects exceed great nights at other places. The staff is always accommodating and friendly, and they don't hover or nag! Honestly, it is not bad as Japanese American food, but the service is TERRIBLE. Maybe the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant, and the food does not make up for how bad the service is. Found a fishbone in my sushi (very unacceptable in my opinion) and told the waitress who looked at me and asked what I wanted her to do about it, and that it is sometimes normal to find fish bones in sushi as sometimes they don't clean their fish properly. Is this a JOKE? No self-respecting place serving food, let alone RAW FISH should think it is even sometimes normal to find a fish bone in the food. She then offered to bring me a new roll (yellowtail scallion), but the taste of the fish sat so badly in my mouth that I was no longer hungry. She did not offer to take the roll off my bill, so instead I asked if she could give me a discount and she said she would take 10% off the total charge. However, when the bill arrived, she had charged me 18% gratuity and then took "10%" off that - not even a real 10%, she just rounded down. In my opinion, they didn't even deserve a tip. Another friend also found shells in her spicy salmon roll. Salmon does not even have shells. Really truly disgraceful and disgusting service, which is just disappointing because the food is really not bad. I will never return and I discourage friends from going. If you are looking for this kind of sushi in the area, head down a bit further (about a 5 min walk more) to Sushi Village - it is better value and the service is 100x better. read more

Tokyo express has tons of great choices on the menu so even if you are dining with someone who does not like sushi, there are many other choices (vegetarian options, terriyaki chicken, etc). But, if you are a sushi fan, the sushi here is great. I would recommend the "spicy" sushi roll boat for 2 (it's not that hot - all of the best spicy sushi rolls brought to you in a wooden boat) if you are with a friend or date. I absolutely love this place. I have never ever had a poor experience here and I go all the time. I have had a variety of things on the menu, too many to remember but my all time favorite is the maki combo c I believe, that comes with Spice Tuna, Spicy salmon, and a spicy California roll. (Sometimes I'll substitute the salmon or California for a spicy yellowtail roll. Because I love yellow tail haha) Anyway most of the combos and entrees come with a miso soup and salad with ginger dressing which are both delicious. I used to frequent Sushi Village around the corner until my friends and I discovered Tokyo Express. Now we just go here in the local area. Overall, a reliable sushi place, though I've noticed a few changes of late in the wrong direction. Their sushi rice is too sweet and unbalanced - perhaps appealing to the over-sweet American palate but far from the way it should be. Also, their miso soup needs serious overhaul. Instead of using kombo and bonito for soup base, it seems they use fried dough (probably left over from tempura) to fake deeper flavor. This may save a few bucks now but I think in the long run, they seriously compromise their reputation since miso soup is fundamental to sushi dining. The customer service here leaves a lot to be desired. A friend and I came on a day when it was pretty much empty. The server was very slow to take our order and was very rude. One of the appetizers we ordered did not taste fresh, and when we told her she got angry and did not want to take the food back because according to her we "already ate the food", which was not completely true. We took a few small bites of the dish and realized that it was not fresh and stopped eating. 90% of the food was still on the plate. I am not sure how else we could determine there was a problem with the food without actual eating a part of it. The server eventually took the dish away but was shaking her head as if she was mad at us and talking under her breath. I love coming here for lunch! I always sit at the sushi bar and the chef always makes me feel welcome and remembers how I prefer my dishes. The owner is very nice as well. The fish is wonderful...very fresh and very nicely prepared. The best mackerel I have ever had is here, as it is juicy and rich flavored. I get the 2 roll, 3 piece sushi lunch combo which comes with delicious miso soup and salad. I always leave happy (I call it a "sushi buzz"). They also prepare lunch quickly, which is great since I only have 1 hour to spend. I only wish I could eat there more often. read more

This is my go-to place for sushi in Poughkeepsie. The food is delicious and they have a great assortment of special rolls. I like the miso soup, it's not too salty and has some crunchies in it. The ginger dressing on the salad is also very good. Tiny bathroom and the restaurant is not well-lit and has a wide variety of decoration (is it Halloween? Valentines Day? 4th of July?) Last time I tried to find Tokyo Express was 2006, but I could not find it. Because I did not see signs saying "Tokyo Express" in front. If you walk in, you may see "Tokyo Express" besides the sunroof and a red lantern besides it. I ordered Sushi & Sashimi combo and Shrimp & Veg tempura, Kirin beer, my wife ordered beef steak teriyaki and gyoza. I am originally from Japan, and I can tell Tokyo Express is providing true Japanese taste. Gyoza just look like the gyoza in Japan (bottom baked brown and crispy, whole skin is softly steamed) I noticed the freshness of sushi and sashimi! Also I am very happy with Kirin beer. Sapporo is pure draft, but I love Kirin beer's bitterness. It reminds me when I was eating at small Japanese restaurant with red lantern. Tokyo Express reminds me good times when I was in Japan for several decades. If you plan to travel to Japan or would like to experience the atmosphere in Japan, you should come to the Tokyo Express. In past there was another pure Japanese restaurant (Cherry blossom in Fishkill) but they closed several years ago, unfortunately .. and now Toro(Japanese and Korean restaurant) is there instead. Beef steak teriyaki is good, teriyaki sauce taste like home-mixture soy sauce and mirin and japanese sake. I introduced my story that I could not find the place in 2006 but now. Then they provided sample of tuna-flowers served with wasabi-mayo sause. This is good too. Wasabi-mayo sause is not so spicey. I also like cozy atmosphere. Some Japanese restaurant in Hudson-Valley area display asian-culture based objects or play sorta music. Tokyo Express was busy with many customers, like we were in some entertainment. People who served dishes are very kind and nice. I was happy to see that so many local people like Japanese food, and I want to know how chefs here learned to cook with true Japanese taste.
