Chef's Sushi Lunch Special
Lara G.

Bonsai is a very good sushi option in the mid Hudson Valley. I have eaten here quite a bit, and have always felt that the food was well prepared. The ambience is a little over the top with multicolored lights in the ceiling and around the restaurant, but it is well lit and clean. The food always tastes fresh, the soup is hot, and everything is delicious. I recently had the chef special sushi lunch and it was very good. I did see that one of the sushi chefs had a cold or allergies or something. He was sniffling and wiping his nose a bit. The other one prepared our food. :-| Service can be hit or miss. When I went yesterday we were not greeted upon entry and we helped ourselves to the chef station seats. The wait staff was not particularly friendly nor unfriendly, just ambivalent. The food was good. I would recommend this restaurant.

46. Midnight Sun Any 2 Roll Lunch Special Spicy Tuna Avocado Roll + Pepper Tuna Avocado Roll

The place is pretty spacious considering it's cramped in that plaza. Has upscale look without breaking the bank prices wise. So to the service I mean pretty attentive as far clearing plates and offering refills, plus there, but other that seemed to want to hang out more then serve. Just my two cents though. The Food, very impressive, I got a spicy tuna roll that actually had a kick spicy wise, plus the crunchy part on top rather then mixed in with tuna as filler. Pepper tuna roll did not disappoint, very seasoned well and roll itself was amazing not cheap on the fillings. As for midnight sun roll, crunchy shrimp tempura , sliced smoked salmon, a very well seasoned pepper tuna again and a really good sweet and spicy sauce. The roll did have eel but I could not tell so much since it disappeared within every other filling.

Meh. The service (Violet) was excellent, the food is not good at all. The sushi was similar to what you'd get in a grocery store or an airport: filled with panko, salmon is not a salmon but some sort of filler paste, eel is not eel. I would not recommend this place for sushi. And it's not cheap. For someone coming from miami, we pay same for much better quality of fish. Do not recommend.

12. Yummy Roll with added on mango on top

Lunch combos are the best deal if you can come here at the specific lunch hours I recommend it! The service is always quick and everyone is friendly. I've been going to the original bonsai for years and started using bonsai 2 more recently. It's all the same great food. I loved trying the yummy roll which is crab, lobster and shrimp. I also added on mango to the top of the roll and the sushi chef was so accommodating and did it for us for a small additional charge.

Bonsai II is my favorite sushi restaurant in the Hudson Valley, and I've been a loyal customer for over a decade now! Their sushi is so fresh and competitively priced compared to other sushi places nearby, the staff are very friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy. Some of my favorites are the salmon sashimi, spicy scallop avocado roll, kani salad, rock shrimp tempura, Yakimaki roll, and gyoza. I have yet to find better sushi in the area!

My wife and I love this place and I honestly thought I already wrote a review... The service is always great and the food is always tasty. This is honestly our go to spot when on that side of the river. Highly recommended!!!

Still my go-to for good sushi in the neighborhood! This was the first time I've dined in in years and the experience was pleasant enough. Food came out super fast & the ambience is very nice. Waitress was a bit pushy with trying to take food away while my daughter was still eating but otherwise it was fine. The lunch special prices are a steal! Chicken teriyaki was delicious & I've taken out the salmon teriyaki bento box, they really do a good job not only with the protein but veggies as well.

Great local spot for sushi! Been going to the first location for years, was at the mall so came in for some late lunch with my mom. We split 3 specialty rolls, which were all delicious!! The staff was quick to take our order and attentive to fill our water glasses. Overall a great spot for sushi that I will definitely continue to come to.

My son and I were out school shopping and decided to stop in and try it. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside. He had a bento box and I had a three roll lunch special. Food was very good!

We were there at lunchtime on a Monday, which is typically a slower day for restaurants, but we were only one of two tables yet there was no real enthusiasm by the wait staff, two women with seemingly no mission. My daughter and I pressed on, however, having a craving for Thai cuisine. I had been here many years ago and found the food to be good but the service to be subpar. I've traveled throughout Asia extensively over the years so I find this complacency at this particular restaurant and anomaly. The food, however, was excellent. We ordered the duck with in a curry sauce, explaining my allergies to alliums. The meal was well presented, well seasoned, and allium free. So they earned back a star for that. My daughter ordered glass noodles with chicken and vegetables, which also was presented very well and extremely tasty. She was very pleased. We stuck with water, but I would've enjoyed being offered a pot of tea, even at a price. We were there for about an hour and saw two or three takeout orders, and one other table will be seated. Very slow indeed. There was a lot of downtime for the weight staff, but they didn't seem to feel it important to check in on us. That's a shame. So here's where we stand: five stars for the food and the value. Three stars for the atmosphere. And unfortunate two stars for Service. My rating is a generous three stars because the food saved the day.

I particularly enjoyed the Vassar noodle bowl, which featured chewy noodles in a coconut milk curry sauce (allegedly Malaysian, more Malaysian "inspired") with BBQ pulled pork on top!! I would never have thought to combine these two ingredients, but they work beautifully together. It's a very warm and comforting dish, and the mint, cilantro, and radish garnish helps provide a bit of contrast. I liked the sour cream drizzle on top, too. I feel like this dish could really be fantastic if they adjusted the thickness and amount of curry sauce (the noodles are swimming in it like a soup) and provided more herbs and radishes on top. It could also benefit from a crispy topping to provide textural contrast. I've had other things from here that I've liked, but that weren't anything special. Like the Malaysian curry, their chicken tikka masala sauce also has a very runny texture, instead of the thicker richer sauces I've had elsewhere. And their bao buns are honestly not worth buying, since they have no hoisin sauce or creamy aioli/slaw element that binds together the rather dry meat, pickle slices, and scallions in each bun. They seem to exclusively be a grab and go kind of place, which makes sense to me as it's in a college town. Inside it's small and rather bleak, without any kind of decoration and not much seating. They take a pretty long time to prepare orders too, so plan ahead in case you're in a hurry.

Seating inside is very limited the employees are friendly. The noodle bowl was very good but a little small but the curry wasn't too spicy and had a nice coconut cream relief. The braised porky belly rice bowl was a nice portion but the sauce was a little over bearing. Could've used a little more of the nuts to give it a better texture. The bao buns were very good. Nice fluffy warm buns and packed with the pulled pork. We also got the Thai tea and lavender lemonade. Lemonade was amazing it had chia seeds in it. The Thai tea was okay. It was way too creamy to the point it was white and I couldn't really taste the tea that much. I'm not from the area but if I ever came back maybe I would try something different from the menu

Worth it? Mostly, yes! Food: 4/5 We tried a little bit of everything, the Seared chicken breast - Hands down my favorite dish of the night. Perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and flavorful. Followed by the Bacon, egg, and homemade biscuit - A close second! The biscuit was dense and satisfying, and it had a really unique pesto-like sauce on top that made it memorable. Some other shout outs: 1) Orecchiette veggie pasta - Orecchiette is hard to find on menus, so I was delighted to see it here. It was a nice light option among our heavier dishes. 2) Jerk ribs - OK, so this is where my expectations and reality didn't fully align. They were well-cooked, but I'm a saucy girl, and these weren't as slathered or juicy as I'd hoped. That said, the rest of my table really enjoyed them. Also, that hibiscus lemonade? Chef's kiss. Refreshing and flavorful, and exactly the kind of detail that makes a place stand out to me. Service: 4/5 Now, here's where I was really surprised: one person was running the whole show. The head chef was managing the kitchen and the front of house--no servers, no extra help. Just him. For the amount of work that entails, he crushed it. Was it a bit slower than a staffed restaurant? Of course. But honestly, it gave the whole experience a humble, homegrown vibe that I appreciated. Also, it meant a lot to support a Black-owned restaurant and actually connect with the person behind the food. Final Thoughts: While we came for dinner, I could tell from the menu (and the vibe) that this place is really known for brunch. I'm genuinely curious to come back during brunch hours to see how the energy--and menu--might shift. Either way, it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and looking for a spot with heart, flavor, and soul.

Our pic was coconut mango rolls, which are wrapped in rice paper instead of Nori, eel, avocado, rolls, and California mango, which I had never had before. Most of this was appealing to my daughter and she really enjoyed it. I was in the mood for some tempura so we had the appetizer order. Don't bother with a temporary here. It is heavy and my guess is that they overuse the oil everything looked gray. Sorry I did not take pictures. She was way too hungry for that. All in all, given that this set us back about $50 plus tip and the tempera was subpar, they score 3 today.

They also have a decent list of local draft beers. So of course I pivoted to a IPA. For dinner we started with the Korean Wings ($14) from their extensive specials list, as well as the Shanghai and Singapore Noodles ($16 ea.) The wings were fried perfectly and the sauce was a well-balanced blend of sweetness and spice. For our noodle dishes, we were surprised to find that with the special you get a combo of chicken, shrimp and pork, as opposed to the choice of only one when you order from the regular dinner menu. Price point also varies depending on your protein. The Shanghai noodles were saucy, with a good amount of veggies with noodles similar to that of chow mein. Alternatively the Singapore noodles are very thin, spiced with a bit of curry and extremely flavorful. We enjoyed both and loved the care that was given by our server. She checked in and updated us about our order, while carefully navigating our needs without interrupting our intimate dinner.
