One of the cutest restaurants in the area, super cozy and lovely atmosphere. Expect the service to forget certain sides, as I've experienced a couple times when I've been here. Despite the great ambiance, I always find the quality of the fish to be average to subpar depending on the type. Their salmon is consistently delicious, though their tuna tasted honestly quite metallic and fishy. I also really enjoy their rice used in the sushi, which seems decent quality. Their portions for noodles and etc. and not great, I often leave this place pretty hungry and disappointed about the quality. However, it's very fun to come here with friends and sit somewhere cozy and well decorated. Don't expect great quality fish however. This place I noticed upon entering is way more of a take out than eat in. But glad despite it being that, they still serve eat in and treat you well. The women that was my sever, I have say was pro, easily being able to bring me my food and drink while juggling the to go orders people came by to pick up. She was very nice and was to the point as well. Both the king crab roll and butterfly rolls were great, always love creative sushi dishes for sure. This was my first time getting takeout and I love finding lunch specials that give me a bang for my buck. What's great is that they offer different types of lunch specials that are sushi specials, entree specials or combinations of sushi, entree and appetizer. You can order something that satisfies all of your cravings, at a great price. I ordered the 3 roll sushi lunch and I was very pleased. The sushi was fresh and the rice was made correctly. It wasn't hard or sweet. The sushi was just perfect. We also ordered the lunch special that allowed an entree and appetizer (opted for chicken teriyaki and gyoza). The presentation was just the cutest. Very well packaged and nice to look at. You do eat with your eyes first, after all. I would say my only complaint would be the lunch sushi roll selection. This spot has a huge selection of rolls and only a few of them are offered on the lunch menu. I would have loved to have gotten different rolls. But other than that, everything was excellent. I had thought this place is takeout only so I haven't give it a try (because let's be honest, part of the fun is the dinning experience) but then learned that you can actually dine inside through reservation ahead of time. We were lucky to get in on a Friday night without reserve (some begging was involved)! Totally thrilled that they had bubble tea (my daughter is a huge fan). If you've never had it, it's a milk tea based drink with tapioca in the drink; you can order different flavors depending on your liking. My fav is taro while my daughter had Thai ice tea flavor this time. It's a meal in a cup as it's quite filling. The drink come with a thick straw to suck the tapioca through, it sweet and chewy at the same time. A must try if you asked me! They had a nice selection of menu items. I usually always get a sushi/sashimi combo but the crispy duck soup noodle caught my attention, so that was what I ordered. My daughter had California rolls and miso soup. Everything was delicious! The duck was cooked like Peking duck with a rich broth, big portion for plenty of leftovers. We definitely want to make this place a regular spot. I can't wait to try their sushi rolls! read more

I've tried this location out a couple of times and never really had a good experience. First time was about three years ago and I ordered boba and forgot to mention I was vegan and needed it to be made with a non-dairy milk. When the waitress returned, she told me they don't have almond milk and was pretty rude to me about not telling her before she got the drink made. Latest visit was a few weeks ago and I decided to try again. This time I ordered a fruit tea (no milk) and my friend ordered the same thing. When they put the drink out and neither of us got it she got a bit snappy with us for not taking it or saying anything even though she got the order wrong as we both requested the fruit tea. We just assumed someone else ordered the milk tea since many people were coming to pick up their food. Overall I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The prices are pretty high (over $15 for a side of fried rice and a fruit tea) and the service is less than ideal. I prefer sushi village that's not too far down the block who have cheaper prices and have always been nice every time I've been. read more

Small restaurant close to Vassar. Was pretty hard to find on the map but we finally figured it out. Reminded me of the local sushi restaurant at my college in Indiana. Food was surprisingly not bad. The noodles the people I was with ordered looked quite good. We also tried the sake selection which was also good. I had a few sushi roles, some of them I liked and a few I was not the biggest fan. Had some sushi after dropping off my brother at Vassar. First time I've ever had a receipt with the suggested tip amount circled or maybe I just noticed this one because I watched a "What would you do" on restaurants discriminating against people of color. But than again, I'm also a young customer with my brother; a college student. And would also assume that maybe the reason the waiter was doing this was because students or customers in general that go to the restaurant have not tipped or at least not well. I decided to try it out since it's near my home and I love Japanese or Chinese food. I knew something was not right when the drive thru speaker and the person never took my order. I drove up to the window and placed my order then. I saw two cars drive away because they got tired of waiting. Then I asked the lady if I needed to park somewhere and wait on my food. There waa a truck in front of me, and by now it had been about 15 minutes and they were still waiting on their food. So I knew it was a big mistake but I had already paid. The entire ordeal lasted about 35 minutes before I got my food. I figured oh well as long as It is good I'll be happy. But when I got home and tasted the food was like the food at the food court at the mall. I was very disappointed the only positive thing I have to say is that I spent $14 and the plates did have a lot of fried rice, but it was bland! read more

I've been to Tokyo Express plenty of times for dinner, but recently I went for lunch. Unlike other sushi restaurants that have lunch specials (x amount of rolls for x dollars), they just give you the dinner menu-- so this can be a very expensive choice for lunch. I went with their three course deal for $15, but it's the same deal they have for dinner. It's less than what I would pay for most of their sushi bar entrees, but more than lunch specials at other restaurants I've been to. Thankfully the sushi itself at Tokyo Express is delicious, but I'd prefer to come here for dinner from now on. read more

This is my favorite sushi place BY FAR. The prices are so amazing, and the quality of the sushi for the price is incredible. The ABC Express meal is perfect when you want an appetizer and sushi or a soup and salad plus 2 sushi rolls for about $16. This is also the ONLY sushi place you can get a delicious sushi boat for only $40 that could feed about 3-4 people. It's amazing. Oh lord where do I begin. If you want to get your fix sushi this is the place, almost everything I had tried is delicious I usually get the Thai roll which has mango on top and is awesome. The location is a bit hidden and a bit small in my opinion which is why they are able to have fresh ingredients and you can see it and taste it. The owner is a nice lady who's always greeting the customers as they came in. They have a sushi bar where you can see how they make your sushi which is always fascinating to see. I avoided Tokyo Express for two years based on the fact that their exterior makes it seem kind of rundown. Instead, I went to Sushi Village until finally my boyfriend convinced me to try it since all the locals frequent it over Sushi Village. And it's true - you really have to follow where the locals congregate. While the interior/exterior is clearly lacking in comparison to Sushi Village, the sushi is far, far better. It is just as fresh AND has the added bonus of far more roll choices and at a better price! At this point, we've probably tried nearly all of the special rolls and most of the regular ones, and the grand majority of them are both creative and delicious. My favorite (and the one that I keep ordering EVERYWHERE I go) is the spicy scallop, which is truly an orgasm in your mouth. We haven't had the kitchen entrees here (unlike at Sushi Village), but the edamame speaks volumes to the quality coming out of the kitchen - it's FRESHLY STEAMED. Sushi Village's edamame is always overcooked (my pet peeve), and looks like its been sitting around, both on the verge of turning brown and warm, not HOT. Tokyo's is bright green and steaming when it arrives. As for the slow service, considering how many people go there (its always packed around meal times) and the fact that at most there are two girls working, I'd say the service is about even. Maybe even better since I can actually get their attention when I want more green tea. It's not the best sushi (it is Poughkeepsie after all), but its the damn best place in the area! I actually wish that it was also in NYC by my house so that I could have good, reasonably priced sushi more often. read more

Delicious miso soup and sushi .I like to get the sushi for two platter which has tons of sushi and is more than enough for two people. The variety is excellent as well. It did take longer than expected but was delicious when it arrived about a half hour later than was originally told. Stopped in for a quick lunch the other day and being that school's not in session, I got choice seating and immediate service. Sweeeet. The roll and sashimi choices were so numerous that they didn't fit on a single erasable white board, and the buy-more-eat-more-pay-less deals were fan-friggin-tastic. I got the a fancy-shmancy spicy California roll *actually spicy! thank ye sushi gods) and an Eel Avocado roll (i'm generally afraid of said sea serpent but something told me i'd be safe here...) plus the usual fare of ginger salad and miso soup for a grand total of eight bucks. By name alone, this sushi restaurant may seem cheap, but don't let the name deter you. We're used to exceptional sushi restaurants in NYC and this place hits the nail on the head. The atmosphere and decor is like that of East Asia and the fish is as fresh as it comes. We have tried several rolls the last few times we've been there and all are exceptional; fish à la carte is also fresh and they serve very large pieces. I know I live in New York City and have an abundance of Japanese restaurants available to me whenever I want, but a small part of me still misses Tokyo Express, where I mastered using chopsticks whilst kind of drunk or completely exhausted. I can't attest to their sushi (because I don't eat fish!), but can comment on a large portion of their non-sushi dinner menu. The chicken and steak teriyakis were both my favorite dishes, served sizzling on a bed of delicious delicious teriyaki-soaked onions. The various tempuras are light and crispy. My favorite are the chicken and sweet potato options. The pork gyoza and spring rolls are must-have appetizers. I was less of a fan of the udon and the beef negimaki. There wasn't enough scallion or beef in the latter. Finally, you should end your meal with fried green tea ice cream; you will not regret this decision, I promise. Make sure they put whipped cream on it. As far as I can remember, service was a little slow, and they sometimes seated us in the most awkward arrangements (but accomodating eight people can be difficult in the already crowded/weird-shaped restaurant), but while you're waiting for a long time at your weird table you can listen to the sweet sounds of the Backstreet Boys, early Britney Spears, and other teen 90s sensations, so don't complain! read more

Yes, there have been better Japanese restaurants since then; places with better lighting, spaciousness, and quicker service (there's only 1-2 waitresses at a time so give them a break; they work hard and are always friendly). Yet, I miss the curry chicken, the yakitori, the gyoza, and the beef teriyaki. Many times I would walk back to my dorm with a bag full of food to eat at my leisure in my dorm room. If I ate there, it was with a friend (or 2 or 3) and we'd pass the time laughing and forgetting about our exams or papers for just an hour or so. read more

This is my favorite off-campus restaurant to order from. I loved going pre-pandemic, but the food tastes just as good packaged and delivered. The sweetheart roll is amazing and the bubble tea is always delicious. I also enjoy the udon soup and the packaging makes it really easy to eat without a mess in my small dorm room. Tokyo Express's location invariably forces it to be compared to Sushi Village. Luckily for Tokyo Express, they win this, hands down. Service is always friendly and quick, and the food is notably better. Their recent expansion should also help with the formerly frequent packed house. The original space was cramped and awkwardly placed, but the new space is much more open. The food is pretty standard Japanese food, honestly. Not particularly impressive, mind, but it's not necessarily bad either. I'm not a huge fan of their chicken, but I rarely do at Japanese restaurants. Their noodle dishes are decent, and their unagi don is delish. One of the better restaurants in Poughkeepsie, but it's not incredible in the grand scheme of things. read more
