This review comes from a regular customer. The fish tacos, I mean the fish stick tacos I was served for lunch today were unacceptable. I love this location, but not unconditionally. It may be hard to have a certain consistency with fish tacos, but you cannot serve this to your customers. Either send it back to the vendor or don't serve it at all. This place confused me. I'm not sure where it fits in terms of the food space. My first thought was - this is fast casual Mexican food. But then I realized chipotle already exists. My second thought was - the pitch is slightly elevated chipotle. And indeed, I think that is what this place attempts. The only issue is that chipotle tastes better and is cheaper... much cheaper. It's on riverside right next door to mendo farms. It's close to the ucla med center and what I am guessing is a bunch of writers rooms offices for Netflix romcoms. It was semi crowded but not crazy. It's an open space that feels okay. Kinda fake veneer everywhere but it's clean and welcoming. There's a menu up front and it's a pay to order / take a number table service style place. Off to the side on a wall, sorta messy and unorganized, are napkins, take home containers, and various salsas and condiments. Service 3/5 Nothing good or bad here. The staff was distant but efficient. Not friendly or mean. Just people going about their day doing their jobs. The food came out fast so I can't knock that. Food 1/5 Here's the rub! This is actually my second time eating Tocaya. The first time was at work, ordered a bowl that came to my office. It was super mid. So I wanted to see if it was a fluke. This time I ordered a california burrito. Which was carne asada, potatoes, guac and some sauces. I have some dietary restrictions so I asked and they put the crema to the side. The burrito itself is 17.99. I asked for extra meat and it was 22 dollars. Look I know America is going down the tubes, but since we've reached the 22 dollars for a burrito at a semi fast food joint era - it better be good. But the thing is. Everything here LOOKS good. But it's all so flavorless and bland. It's probably some of the worst "Mexican" food I've ever had. I've grown up in LA and I'm down with anything from authentic street food to del taco. It all has its place. But 22 dollars for a super bland burrito (with no sides for that cost!). Nope! We also ordered some queso and somehow again it LOOKED promising. But it tasted so, so bland. And heavy. I actually took some of their free street corn sauce as a side and dipped the chips and it tasted better. So just get chips. It's a better hack. My girlfriend was with me and could barely eat her meal. So I'm not alone in this! But I did look around and other people did seem to eat here. So am I living in some kind of bizzaro world or something? Am I wrong here? I dunno. I just know it's expensive AF and for that cost I at least want my food to taste okay. I guess I'll just go across and down the street to chipotle next time! This place is a pass for me and my wallet. Went here because I got a flyer with some coupons. I used the 2 bowls, 50% off. This place is easy to miss. When we were driving down Riverside Dr. we were keeping an eye out, but still missed it. It's next to Bob's Big Boy, but sandwiched in-between other shops, a pair of trees, and there's a bus stop shelter covering the front. Anyway...I ended up parking my car on a residential street and we just walked it, trying to find it that way. Once you find it, it has a nice outdoor area and inside it's clean and modern with a wall of plants. You can go to the counter to order or use the QR code at the tables. Everything looks healthy, which is great if you're vegan/vegetarian like me or a meat eater like my sister since there's options for both. We were given a number and the food was brought out to our table fairly quickly. The portions are big enough to take some home and the food tastes great. My stomach was growling before we got here and I was sure I'd be able to finish it all, but still had some leftovers, which is good since it is a little expensive. There's also agua frescas to drink, which also tasted good, and were pleasantly surprised that they came in cute mason jars with a handle that you can take home. GRASSHOPPER IN THE SALAD I placed a Doordash order to this location and I rarely leave reviews, but my experience was so awful that I had to. I ordered the Mexi Cali Caesar Chix Salad, ate a few bites, and then saw that there was an entire fully intact GRASSHOPPER in my salad. The body, eyeballs, and legs were clearly visible. I know for a fact that it was the restaurant and not the dasher, due to the fact that the bag was fully sealed before I opened it. I understand these things can happen, but the grasshopper was so large and fully embodied, it blows my mind that someone could miss that when making the salad. It was literally bigger than some of the chicken pieces. This clearly leads me to believe that the lettuce wasn't washed properly. VEGAN OPTIONS!!!!! VERY LOUD MUSIC...... We asked them to turn it down and they did . Two tacos were tofu. The tofu was a little spicy, but it was OK. Maybe just seasoning the tofu not just making it spicy will be good. Garlic powder, onion powder, some and pepper maybe a little bit of dry herbs then sauté it. And one I believe was jackfruit, but they were all good. I came all the way from Canyon country so you know they must be good. I will be back. Oh, and I ordered tortilla soup to go. read more

Went in Sunday night and the place was almost empty. We got the chips, salsa, guacamole, tocaya salad, guiltless quesadilla, and street corn en fuego. Everything tasted amazing except for the tocaya salad that had water sitting on the bottom and some of the lettuce was frozen but didn't say anything. Ha! Ok so I rarely do reviews. I only make them when something is so ridiculous that it has to be written about. I just want to start off by saying that shrinkflation should be a crime. It is actually very sad to pass off the burden of the economy to the customer by diminishing your brand and your product. The fish tacos here used to be a hit but I unfortunately cannot support this franchise anymore. Yesterday I placed an order for delivery in which I ordered two tacos and a burrito the tacos I kid you not were basically the size of a finger these tacos. I need to remind everyone were once a very, very satisfying meal that one could grab because the fish inside of the taco were very large and massive and overtime. I've noticed that these items have gotten smaller and smaller and smaller to a point that is almost Laughable the birria torta here used to be a very good deal at $13. You used to get a very nice size torta with a good amount of meat and now what they have done is lied to the customers by switching out the bread that it's on to one that is also now the size of a closed fist. It is very small and the fact that you advertise different bread types online for different sandwiches and you're knowingly swapping it out with the smaller bread size that is not intended for the sandwich is wrong. I unfortunately have to bring this to the attention of corporate because I truly don't know if this is a corporate issue or if this is a franchise manager, looking to get one over on their customers by fattening their own pockets without the corporate entities knowing. I understand that you are located in an area that has high income this does not mean that because people have higher income that you should be taking advantage of them by giving them smaller quantities of food I need to remind you that you are in LA and you are part of a chain being in LA means that you are competing with other Mexican food, spots and trucks that offer amazing quantities and amazing food by talented people so the fact that someone chooses to come to your spot already says a lot I can name various spots that are a little bit outside of reach, but are willing to deliver that I will gladly pay a premium for just to not get screwed over by you guys. I will not be naming them here as I am hoping you guys will correct this issue I do not want to redirect other people to other businesses unless you guys make it right now. The last thing I need to explain is the burrito I received. getting a steak burrito from this place is actually an extra cost. The steak cost more money obviously I have taken a photo of the burrito. I received here for your convenience. The burrito as you can see is about 98% rice and beans and 2% meat. This is totally unacceptable and is another form of customer abuse in terms of offering them less of the expensive item so your numbers look better on paper. This is unfair for the customer, especially when they are paying you a premium like I said, choosing to dine in at your establishment and choosing you over the other amazing talented places that they can be going to in the area or neighboring areas. I have taken a couple photos below to show you and if things are corrected, and I also hear back from corporate ,I will continue to randomly dine in at this location just to personally make sure that the quality control stays on point. This is unfair to your customers and it is also unfair for the locals that live minutes away from you. I think I speak for everyone when I say that someone has to hold these businesses accountable. I understand times are tough right now, but it's better to be honest with your customer base than to greedily slip the rug out from under them. read more

Had a lovely meal here for Taco Tuesday! I am so thankful for the wonderful vegan options and love that the cauliflower taco is default vegan! I also love how easily most menu items can be veganized! I got a trio of tacos for less than $8 and they were so filling! I really love the vegan crema sauce! The service was friendly and helpful and everyone I interacted with had such a great energy. Despite it being dinner time, there were still ample tables available and it felt very spacious. The seating was also very comfortable. I love the decor and cleanliness here. I'm a religious gluten free burrito orderer! It survives deliveries deliciously and never disappoints! I was a little disappointed when I brought a vegan friend to try the restaurant and they nearly refused to make him a burrito with their vegan protein. But pleasantly surprised that they're more generous with salsa in house than delivery. The restaurant is beautiful. read more

So this is kind of strange and awkward, I walk in and see a sign saying something like "if it's your first time here go up to the front and find a team member and they will describe it to you" at least something along those lines. So I walk up to where there's like three employees and said hi my first time here, and one of the employees said take out or for here. I said I've never been here before, I didn't see a menu, I was following what the sign in the front of the restaurant that prompted me to and now standing here confuses. Zero stars actually. I was back today. Taco Tuesday prices have almost doubled-a chicken taco in late December was 2.50 now 3.75. I've been told it's the same size served at full price. Another excessively long wait. I understand prices have gone up, the packaging alone from Tocayo is beautiful but costly I assume and made overseas. I guess the price increases are to cover for the lost business? Sadly it's the same staff there and expediting food isn't their strong suit. This chain isn't long for the world. We live literally (yes, literally!) right behind Tocaya, and sometimes order takeout if we don't want to cook, drive, or walk far. It's mostly good, high-quality food, even if it's a little pricey. I really like the guac, freshly fried plantain and tortilla chips. Their burritos are always delicious. I really like that they offer all kinds of veggie and vegan options. Tocaya's online ordering system is a little wonky. It doesn't always accurately show what's available at the restaurant (sometimes I'll order something, am told on the checkout page it isn't available, but I can go in and order that same item from the counter) and it's hard to customize. The "notes" section only allows for 10-12 characters. Fortunately, we live so close that we usually place the order, then walk to the restaurant and explain the modifications. We never ask for anything crazy, but usually things like half/half of the chips. However, something is always wrong with our order and I wonder about the QC. Last time we ordered, I received a cup of refried beans instead of the chicken tortilla soup I wanted, and when we called the store, the woman I spoke with swore she remembered packing a soup. I offered to walk over and show them the beans, but she offered a refund. Last night, I ordered a grilled shrimp street taco (which wasn't cheap). When I bit into the taco, I couldn't see the shrimp under all of the toppings but realized the shrimp were fully shelled, still had their veins, and tails! They had just been grilled like that and dropped into a taco, without anyone noticing, I guess? I called the restaurant and the employee didn't really apologize, but just told me "we'll refund your card." I'll check again tomorrow, but I don't see a refund yet. There were numerous order issues before this and the beans and I've come to expect something to be messed up, but the shrimp grossed me out. We mostly order here if we want an easy dinner, but the consistent issues make me wonder how much they pay attention to the food that is being prepared or packed. read more

The hibiscus aqua Fresca is OK. I love that. It's not super sweet, but it could have more ginger. Took my daughter and neice here for a bite to eat. This was my nieces first time here. There is street parking and a lot behind. They have indoor and outdoor seating. For Saturday evening they were not that busy. I did notice that they were packaging a lot of to go orders. Staff was friendly and answered my nieces questions and made recommendations. The place is clean and very earthy looking with plants hanging on the walls. You order at your seat with the QR code sign at the table. Once we ordered our food. The service came within ten minutes! The food was fresh, portioned well and delicious. I had the salmon bowl and my party had the birria bowl and birria torta. The plantain chips and guac were Soo good! Usually when I decide to do a negative review I try to make sure I have pictures but it wasn't worth it. I ordered from DoorDash for this location and was truly disappointed. I realized I hadn't been since the pandemic and I recall really liking their food, and at the time I just wanted something different. I ordered plantains with guacamole, their battered fish taco and the street corn en fuego with carne asada. They didn't remember the plantains, the fish was old - cold and tough, the bowl was ice cold, not spicy and just overall lacked flavor. Honestly, I was genuinely surprised because I don't remember ever receiving a meal like that from them before. At the end of the day, it's most likely better that you eat there rather than order from there. Not sure I will try them again but again would recommend eating there. read more

Today, I decided to try something different. I went to Tocaya in Burbank. I ordered the chicken diabla plate. The name is misleading. It was delicious! The flavor on the chicken was spicy good with more if a meditteranean style of spice, but not too hot. The bowl included healthy kale and avocado. The tomatoes, olive, and cucumber pieces cooled the spiciness. Don't be afraid to try it. I usually only order items with mild spice. I've been to this one twice, and it's been a decent experience both times. Their pick-up area is reminiscent of COVID days where a table is dividing the space, and someone is normally there to distribute the bags. As for the food and drink, I normally get two of the same tacos (barrio style, achiote chicken, queso fresco, no onions), a side of either the Mexican or cilantro lime rice, and if I can afford to do so, a side of chips with guacamole or salsa, and a strawberry basil beverage. I did this today since I had a promo for the chips/guacamole, and it was good. Their square packaging has always been secure, and things stay fresh. However, always check your order (with any place, not just here); I had requested corn chips over plantain chips, and I noticed the plantains in my bag. This was a quick, easy change after checking the receipt. One thing that I seem to have a slight issue with at all locations is that the tacos seem to cool off way too quickly. My selection of achiote chicken is usually lukewarm if I am lucky. I've never gotten sick or anything so far; I guess it's just the temperature of the meat. The only complaint I have-which is of no fault to tocaya-is that they are way too close to Bob's, which I have a habit of walking into. Even though they are two completely different cuisines, I like them both so coming here makes it difficult to choose which one. read more

We found a healthy eating treasure in Burbank called Tocaya Modern Mexican. It's a clean cafeteria-like atmosphere in which you can order from your table using a QR code or walk up and order from the cashier. My son called it a new age type business where cash is unacceptable. The food is clean, old-world, and fresh with classic flavors. I enjoyed the Baja fish tacos; the hot sauce brought the flavor out. The corn bowl was excellent, too. The strawberry basil drink was refreshing, along with the sangria. The service was perfect. We will be returning. read more

When Tocaya first opened, they were great. The ingredients were fresh. The portions were a good size. Now, they are awful! We just picked up our order and the portion of guacamole and salsa is a joke. I only ordered black beans and rice for my dinner and the beans are under cooked and cold. The rice is flavorless.
