This was our first visit and we now see Tlalli as our "neighborhood restaurant" even though we don't live nearby. It's impossible to describe the warm, welcoming feeling created by the staff. Each dish is carefully created and flavorful. The tostada appetizer came with 9 unique salas -- a great introduction to the kitchen's skills. read more

After having dinner with my wife there tonight I'm confident in saying that Tlalli is the best restaurant that has opened in Ashland since at least La Briccola several years ago. The food and cocktails are exceptional, with a special shout out to the Ahi tostada and the Tropical Ass Bitch cocktail. The restaurants commitment to quality ingredients is obvious. If I have my story straight the recipes honor and are faithful to the indigenous Mexican and Afro Caribbean traditions of the co-owners. The ambience of the restaurant is energetic, enthusiastic and upbeat. As impressive as the food was the charming and attentive service we received from our server Angela as well as Manya, a more than gracious co-owner. Get your reservation now while you can! read more

Wow, we're in love with this place! The food is different than I've ever had, very fresh with flavors that make your tastebuds explode. We started off with a delicious house made cocktail that was smoky and sour, delicious, followed by Duck Confit on a homemade Mole and Tacos de Nopales (cactus) that knocked my socks off! Not only are the food and drinks amazing but it's run by a very friendly and hard working family who obviously know what they're doing and love it and their customers. Amazing gem - fantastic flavors - fun vibe - wonderful addition to the Ashland restaurant scene! Loved the kale pepitas salad, the jicama salad, the oxtail tacos and the nopales tacos. The good, the bad, and the ugly. On the recommendation of a friend who had been here once before, made reservations for 4 at opening at 5pm. Was good to see other customers waiting for the doors to open. Once the doors opened, we entered a small, quaint colorful entry way that led into the restaurant and out to their dining patio. We were greeted very warmly and seated indoors. After being seated we were given ample time to chat and catch up before having our food and drink order taken. 15 minutes. No worries, no hurries. Our cocktails came out 10 minutes later. (25 minutes into being seated and now able to enjoy their refreshing Flor Y Canto (qty of 2), glass of wine, and one beer. Enjoying our drinks and each others company, dinner arrived 15 minutes later. Still no hurries since we were enjoying our time together and we had only been there now for a total of 40 minutes. Our food orders were 1 Cochinita Pibil (pork shoulder), 1 Tapado De Coco (Caribbean seafood soup), and 2 orders Tacos de Carnitas (seasoned pork tacos). Although seasoned well, the pork shoulder was dry. The salsa served with it added moisture but this dish lacked the "braise" described on the menu. The soup was described as "good" by my friend, and although my husband and I enjoyed the pork tacos, the price point of approximately $20 for three soft tacos gave us pause. They were delicious but not anything we would crave in the future. As dinner finished, our tab was promptly delivered. It was now 6:05 pm and our stomachs were satisfied. 25 minutes to eat dinner was ample time; now digestion and finishing our cocktails were all that was left to complete the experience or so we thought. As my husband was filling out and signing the tab, the hostess, as politely and warmly as could be spoken said, "Im not trying to rush you but we have another party waiting for this table." Wow! That was the nail in the coffin and the boot in our bottoms to leave this restaurant. Cocktails still in glasses but onward and upward seems the motto for this restaurant. I'd love to say that warm greetings would be enough to bring me back but the overall experience, including the cuisine does not warrent further exploration. Cocktails were terrific .... the bartender is one of the owners! My oxtail was much too spicy, so the owner suggested that I get the sauce on the side next time. Loved the outdoor patio dining experience, except that the legs of the chairs don't fit well under the table. They conflict with the table legs. So, this made for uncomfortable sitting. Hopefully the owners read this review and rectify this. read more

From beginning to end, our experience at Tlalli was a delight. We were treated with such warmth, welcoming, and charm it felt like a big family reunion. One cannot help but notice the care and attention to detail put into everything from the physical space and decor, to the staff, to the menus. And of course I would be remiss to forget to mention the delicious food. From aguas frescas and cocktails to mole tacos there is something delicious at every turn. Take out the one griper and the accurate collective rating is 5 stars. Tllali is a terrific addition to the Ashland food scene. Welcoming owners and staff. Very yummy food prepared differently than at other places. Good drinks. And they have courtyard tables. I highly recommend them other than doing so will make it harder to get a reservation. read more
