One of the best TJ Maxx I've ever been to. Yes, even in this historic city, we did find the need to return to 'normal' to getting 'Our Maxx On.' Plus, it was really quite warm and cozy protecting us from the outside chill and Washington DC weather. It is two stories and the entry is on the top story that is a bit smaller; but, still quite a few cool purses for the ladies. Take the escalator down and you will see a lot of jewelry-watches on your right and then a lot of clothing, jackets, and winter wear for both men and women and juniors. Really nicely organized and not blown through and disheveled like we see the aisles in Orlando. Nice experience. At the normal checkout lines on the lower level, if there is a big line, head up the escalator to the checkout line up there. Normally, there's just one person (at the most) in line. This TJ Maxx is ok. However this review is specifically for the bathroom services. I went to TJ Maxx to shop and attempted to use their bathroom. Their bathroom was completely disgusting, with trash overflowing and female used products overflowing in the stall. This is not my 1st bathroom experience here. Although others did not have a problem using a filthy germ infested bathroom, I decided not to use it. I went to the manager of the store to make a complaint. Based on the tone in her voice, she did not appear surprised . She said "I know. TJ Maxx management will only hire someone to come and clean in the morning only. I don't even go in there if I have to go. We tried to tell management, but they just ignore us and they don't care. If customers like you complain, they may do something. But they don't care or listen to us". That was disheartening to hear. So , I hope that someone in TjMaxx land hears this and fixes this ongoing problem. read more

The one thing I come to T. J. Maxx for is Korean skincare items for cheaper. This store had a great selection, and I came out with a new face wash, exfoliating wash, toner, and serum. They have a great selection of on-sale items here as well, though I didn't see any Korean items amongst them. I went on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy. read more

It's an okay TJ Maxx - unfortunately it's the only one in the area. They have a smaller home section but a good selection for women's clothing, purses, hair care/makeup, coats, toys/games and pets. Shoe selection was varied. It was organized and probably was not as well stocked because they were switching over to Christmas items. Service needs a bit of help. When I was looking at the jewelry, the saleswoman at the counter was talking to another employee and looked over at me a few times. After I stood there smiling at the both of them to get some help, I kindly cut in to their conversation by apologizing and asked if about something. She answered my question, then directed me to another counter in the section and said she would meet me there. After nearly 10 minutes after I went over to the that counter waiting for her, she was still speaking animatedly with this employee (it was NOT store-related, they obviously went to university together). After failing to catch her eye, I left. Overall - absolutely would come back because 1) I always find what I need and 2) there's no other option. read more

Cashier loudly accused me of switching tags on a $29.99 dress I was RETURNING. And I had a receipt. Made absolutely no sense. After she figured out I didn't switch anything she didn't even apologize. The store was larger than expected, mostly a basement store but some departments in the main street level. The store was organized, clean, easy to maneuver, and well lit. I went looking for men's shoes because mine broke. There were a lot of clearance items and incredible markdowns so I got about $200 worth of things for $8. The cashier was incredibly friendly. I went here last week for the first time and got impressed with the size of the store and the variety of merchandise they carry. Although I have been working in an office nearby for almost 3 years, I had never gone into this store. This time I had to get a toy for tots for the holiday season charity and decided to come here for the convenience. The entrance area is rather small but once you take the escalator downstairs, "wow!", it's so spacious with lots of stuff from jewelry to cell phone accessories to clothes to toys to what not. I am a D.C resident and had an interaction at TJ Maxx Store 1206 located on 1601 13th St NW on 9/02/2022 btwn the hours of 3:00 pm and 4 pm. To preface this message - I was an avid "Maxanista" and proudly referred my all friends, family, and mentees who move into DMV to said store due to their high-quality materials and location - after this interaction, I am firm in knowing that I will not return to this location and hesitate to return to this franchise. I came into the store trying to complete an overdue return (original purchase date of 7/21/22, purchase amount $189.68) even before starting my store experience I witnessed who I now know as one of the stores' managers Marcus was having a disgustingly short interaction with another customer who seemed to be on the phone before I even walked past the jewelry I was witnessing the manger imitate and in an over theatrical way handle the patron (i.e lots of eyes rolling, audiovisual sighing and cuteness). Knowing I had an item past its due date - I pursued the store with my partner before my return because I was under the assumption that I would receive store credit for my two under twenty dollar returns. we approach the # 5 register and walk up to a swarm of associates ( & managers) mid-conversation, upon walking up I was not spoken to until I addressed I had a return. From that point on the interaction deteriorated; before the associate began initiating the return process I alerted her to the fact that the tags had been removed (due to my assumption the items would fit) she didn't acknowledge that and began the return process. Upon finding out for herself that the items did not have the tags attached (but one tag was present along with the items) she again did not address me nor my partner and walked away to begin speaking with another "associate". The "associate" (the manager who never once announced himself as such) informed her that due to a myriad of things that were not explained to us, our return was unable to be processed and we couldn't be helped. At this point in the interaction, I attempted to clarify the situation and highlighted the item on the receipt that was correlated (both in price and item description). The associate at register 5 condescendingly began to explain that the item could not be returned. When I asked a follow-up question, she did not acknowledge me or my voice and began to speak to my partner (who up to this point had not spoken. effectively letting me know that she decided she was finished speaking with me). I took offense to her immediate dismal of me, I had not (and did not) raise my voice or ask to speak to a supervisor nor did I curse or use inappropriate language. However, when I asked if she was okay (hoping to gain some clarity as to why I was being treated with an air of disrespect as if I had desecrated the store) she walked away once again and shouted across the til to the other "associates" that were present. An associate then approached the situation (the associate we later learned was Marcus, a manager at the location. Not once during the entire interaction did he announce himself to be in a position of authority nor did he offer to assist us or take over our transaction nor did he once apologize for the unnecessarily elevated situation) and we received an attitude that matched, if not exceeded, the attitude of the cashier we were dealing with originally. As we explained that the cashiers' tone, tenor, and dismissal were inappropriate and unwarranted, Marcus could only offer an apology that he was "Sorry we feel that way" partnered with a visible attitude. At that point, I was disgusted that such a simple $12.99 return could turn into such a disaster that only assumed the worse of us and our intentions. As we learned we would not be helped we simply gathered our things and returned to the main entrance and requested a corporate # and/or store #, the associate attempted to intercom both Managers Marcus and Alice (both were present during the interaction but did not once offer assistance or announce their presence), who procured to not travel upstairs or even return the call and one can only assume they did not take the time to address us because they had assumptions of the complaint and made it clear they did not want to help. It truly is gross, dehumanizing, and disgusting to not be treated with respect to a place you give consistent and hundreds if not thousands to over the years. As a young black woman in a big city - it can be difficult to be comfortable in a store and today Marcus and the F St. TJ Maxx took that away from me. I needed some new Blazers & wanted to try this location out since I was in the area. Before heading to the Women's Department which is downstairs, I stopped by the Handbags 1st. During my perusing of the purses, this Amazon of a woman who must have stood 6'8 easily was yelling, snapping, berating & any other form of badly behaving customer etiquette I can come up with at the cashier Davon. She purchased a bottle of water with a $10 bill & told Davon she did not want any $1 bills back, WTH?! Davon kept his professionalism on point & tried to explain to her the basic mathematics of the change denomination he would have to give her. After a good 5 minutes, she still didn't comprehend. Now her yelling & cursing was getting louder & started to disrupt my shopping experience. I've already been up since 5AM & was getting ready to touch her by design with a MK Handbag I was looking at. Instead, I gave Davon a Thumbs Up & flashed him my smile, as he was exuding the proper demeanor any Corporation would be proud to see/know of their Employees are providing while being mistreated. She even had the audacity to look at me & roll her eyes, like I had a TJM Name Tag on...uh no ma'am. So in my MK form, I said "Listen Linda, would you like a $5 bill"? Of course she heard me, acted like she didn't, so I opted to stand by incase Davon needed some back up. Even one of the store's Co-Manager came up with some change but left Davon in the wind, SMH. Finally, Too Tall Joan asked for a refund, then said never mind & then finally left.TGIF for this TJM employee Davon, for doing an OUTSTANDING job of being a better person & an employee representing their Company. Not to mention his fashion skills were on 100, as he assisted me in acquiring the right garments & a Handbag for my WomanBaby. If you don't feel like dealing with traffic or the weather elements, hop on the train to Metro Center, go out the 12th/F exit & you'll see the store across the street. Who doesn't love finding a bargain?! Well, I think you can certainly find that here - most of the time. I work not too far and usually come by on my lunch breaks (and so do others apparently because the lines are atrocious). When this store first opened, I shopped here regularly but lately, it hasn't been the same for me. There has been a poor selection of items and the prices on some things are high for this store. I purchased a top recently and didn't really examine it and obviously didn't try it on (hate trying on and plus I'm on limited time since it's lunch) until I got home only to discover it had a hole and no it was not from the clearance section (how disappointing, but I returned it the very next day). This is more of a quick stop to grab a soda ($1.19) or an umbrella (if I forgot one) and that's about it for me at this point. read more

This TJ Maxx is a treasure trove of unexpected finds, from Australian-style licorice to Coach loafers for $60. Whenever I go inside, I always buy a few more things than I expected (see also: Target and Ikea). The turnover rate seems to be pretty high, so if you don't grab something when you see it, it may not be there in a week, such as those piles of Australian-style licorice that quickly disappeared. I wonder where objects go to die after TJ Maxx -- to Goodwill? Anyway, TJ Maxx is like a thrift shop. You kind of have to dig around and fend for yourself. The people here who are complaining about unhelpful staff doth protest too much. I am a proud Maxxinista! Here are a list of things that TJ Maxx is useful for: + Hosiery/socks: While you can also buy cheap tights at Forever 21 or H&M, you can get higher quality ones at TJ Maxx for about the same price. This is where I get my low-cut socks for the gym as well. + Food: There's a substantial amount of "health food" type things, such as chia seeds, flax seeds, whole wheat pancake mix, dried peaches, granola, lentil chips, etc. And also tons of fancy olive oils and teas. I got some fancy Viennese imported apricot wafers for a party, and they were a hit. + Gym clothes: Great New Balance and Jockey sports bras/pants -- why waste your money at Lulu when you can get a $12 sports bra here? + Greeting cards: They range from $1-$2 in the checkout aisle and can be surprisingly cute, e.g., I got one today that says "Hoppy birthday" and features a pint of beer on the cover. I swear it is adorable in person. I like to stock up on them so I don't have to run to the store when I realize last minute that it's a friend's birthday. + Korean face masks: YES! I got green tea, red wine, and chia seed face masks imported from Korea for a fraction of the price that it'd cost online. Amazing! Somehow, the checkout line is always long, even in the middle of the day. But I don't mind because the aisle is full of fun things to look at. Like, face wipes and gummy bears and mugs. read more

Also if you are trying to buy clearance items some of their rompers are super cheap BUT it's because they usually have a defect. Ripped or tattered. I couldn't stop thinking about my Vince sweater from last week so I came back and hoped it would still be here. It was! It took me some time to find it, but I tried it on and finally concluded it was too expensive to buy. I did end up getting two pairs of Nike shorts, same style, different sizes, different colors. It's annoying the black shorts cost $5 more than the navy blue ones, but at $12.99 and $7.99, respectively, I can live with it. I also found 10 cute thank you cards and envelopes for $1.99. I thought I scored with the Nike shorts, but the best find at TJ Maxx today was a pair of North Face Nuptse Bootie Fur Boots for $49.99, suggested retail $90.00. Tip: if the lines are long downstairs, go upstairs and check out. I could have waited in a line with five customers ahead of me, but instead, I went straight upstairs and was the first person in line! Lady at the register tricked me into getting a rewards card which is a actually a credit card. I *specifically* asked her if it would affect my credit score when she asked for my SS#. She said it "shouldn't." However, it dropped five points. I made a complaint to her and she told me to call a 1-800 number. She straight up lied to my face about the credit score. While it's odd to shop completely underground without windows or the light of day, this TJMaxx does have an extremely well lit store and a great lay-out. Located in downtown DC, it's the 1,000th TJMaxx store; it had a grand opening earlier in the year. Inside, it has great little pictures of DC scattered around. While it can get pretty crowded (especially during lunchbreaks), the staff does a great job moving the lines along for the dressing room and the cashier. I'm happy with the location - it's easy to get to, clean, and friendly. read more

This place is very hit or miss for me. It is one of the smaller stores in their chain. That said, it usually has a good selection of paper goods, calendars and luggage. They have a small but decent kids clothes section and a lot of random kitchen tools that you didn't know you even needed until you see them. The shoe section seems to be shrinking and you won't find the kind of brands that you'll find at Nordstrom Rack. At the holidays they have tons of fun holiday decorations at nice prices. My biggest gripe would be the small number of cashiers. There are times that you'll wait 10+ minutes since there are rarely more than 2 people working at the registers. This store just had its grand opening today. I went before work, and it was great. I love having a discount store right downtown, and the selection was great. The upper floor has purses, and downstairs is all the beauty products, clothes, and housewares. The store had a designer section with Tahari, Kate Spade and others, as well as a good selection of shoes and standard TJ Maxx clothes. I love that there is an entire business suit section for women--and there were some great suits. I will definitely be returning to get some. There is a juniors section, but thankfully it is small. I'm glad that there is more space devoted to work clothes and older audiences. Lots of nice picture frames, but not much art (just a few small canvases and framed prints). There is a doggie aisle with food and shampoos and toys. The best thing about this place, at least for me, is that it opens at 8am. It's perfect for working people--I love that it's open before I go in to work. NOTE: It's not really on 13th Street. The entrance is on F Street, in between 12th and 13th. read more

While it's super clean, they had hardly anything that I wanted to buy; and normally I can walk into a Maxx store and find something in every section. I was very disappointed there were no cute dresses to be had at this location, and I felt like the employees where on auto pilot and didn't want to be there. I have been to this TJ Maxx several dozen times. It's right by where I work, and I like to treat myself to post-work shopping binges every once in a while. But it never works out quite like that. Let's start with shoes, which is where it's all at. This place NEVER has any shoes even worth looking at. They have geriatric gross leftover Nine West crap that nobody wants, and it has been on those shelves for at least four months. Nothing new. Perfumes and Makeup: messy, open, spilled, or just plain ruined. They do have a good selection of hair things, though. Dresses: Nothing. I found ONE cute dress there this one time, and I was like wtf, I love it, I'm getting it. It was full priced, but I decided it was so cute that I'd overlook the $75 non-sale price. And then I take a closer look and it has a GIANT rip down the side. ummmmm....? The designer area is just total bullshit. It's crap that nobody wants to buy, and they sell it for about $200 less than standard full price. Mostly multi-color Tory Burch crap. They do have some nice purses every once in a while; as everyone has mentioned, they have Philip Lim and Fendi, etc. But again, that's a major expenditure. Jewelry and Watches: this is a really good place to come for jewelry. They have a good selection and really great prices. Overall, this place is clean and usually tidy, but the merchandise is just not worth it. I've been here several times and never bought anything. I did find a pair of GORGEOUS cavalli booties for almost $300. They were hidden in the wrong size section, at the bottom row. I saw them, fell in love, and purchased them. Since they were tied together, I didn't try to walk in them at the store. Once I got home, it was completely IMPOSSIBLE to walk in them. My foot was almost perpendicular to the ground--and it was more painful and crampy than walking in Pigalles. So I returned them :( read more

If this were a suburban TJ Maxx, I would probably give this 3 stars. But this is in DC. It's located by a Metro (Metro Center, blue/orange/red lines.) It's clean, reasonably well organized, with minimal lines and decent service. The selection can be hit or miss, but I think you sort of have to expect that with discount stores. Personally, I've found what I came for (tights, gloves, baking pans, nice sweater for my S.O. to wear to work, a party dress) about 7 times out of 10 (they are at times seriously lacking on coats, shoes, mixing bowls, ladies' lingerie, and towels.) And lastly, if you compare this place to the TJ Maxx on Rhode Island Ave or the Marshall's in Columbia Heights, it deserves 4 stars. read more

As far as discount clothing stores go, this one has a nice selection of items at fair prices. The racks are totally disorganized, but you get what you pay for. I recently bought 13 items (some dressy and some casual) and spent around $200. There is a register on the upper level that is usually available if the lowel level has a long line. There is a nice selection of accessories and home goods in addition to clothing. That said, the employees could use a lesson or two in customer service and friendliness. As I was shopping, two employees shoving clothes back onto the racks (in the wrong size section) were gossiping about another employee. Additionally, the woman in the dressing room needed some basic help in counting to 10 and facial recognition. There was one woman who kept walking in and out to exchange items, and the dressing room attendant was incredibly overwhelmed by this. When I counted out my 10 items to try on, she argued with me about giving her a number (when, in fact, she owed me a number). I had to very politely explain to her, "I just got here. I have not tried anything on yet, but I would like to try on these items as soon as you give me a number '10' for the dressing room." Every time I brought items back I hung them up where she asked me, I would count out items to her, and then she would get mad and recount them. After about 5 items, she would start counting all over again. If I was holding long dresses (to keep them from dragging on the ground, she would say, "What about THESE?!" with an angry look... until I dropped my arm to show her they were the same items I was already holding. Then, she would lose her place and start counting again. I'll spare you the rest. read more

Located in a dead cell-zone dungeon, this TJ Maxx is no doubt so much bigger than it appears from above. I go here when I have some time to kill and am mentally ready for a dumpster diving experience. I went here last Sunday and witness two children attempting to joust each other with the shopping carts while their mom made bluffs that the police are on their way (the kids were not buying it btw). Yes, its that kind of place but in exchange for your sanity, are insane markdowns of random stuff you didn't even know that you needed. On this trip, I stumbled across X Factor nail polish by Sephora for $5, Coach loafers for $70, Too Face fake bronzer for $8, Nike shorts for women for $15, and so much more. There's alway a "runway" department which has high end brands of women's clothes and accessories although it seemed very picked over. Its a mixed bag but there are some real deals hidden in the piles of junk (especially in areas less frequented) and the screaming children. Its certainly not for everyone, but those who enter will likely be rewarded for their troubles. The inventory at this particular store seems more upscale than the Rhode Island location, although the Arlington location trumps this one in selection. read more

First off, whomever does their displays is doing a really great job, and the store has gotten even more organized and easy to navigate than before, so yay on that. Secondly, this is a discount store. The whining about having to search and/or having to wait in line is kind of ...naive. Yes, sometimes you have to do a little hunting to find the good stuff. Yes, sometimes the line seems glacial. But also yes, you can find some great stuff here at a good price, and most of the employees I've dealt with have been very pleasant, if very busy. And a request to anyone else who shops here - if you don't want something, please put it back where you found it. That will make the hunting easier for all of us. This includes shoes. Who doesn't love a great bargain?! T.J. Maxx is a great place to look for something new to add to your wardrobe, as long as you are willing to spend some time treasure-hunting. This location is clean and, despite being in a basement, feels nicer than many other stores (i.e., the one on Rhode Island Ave). It always seems to be understaffed, but then again, it isn't typically crowded, so the check-out wait has never been atrocious for me. Like others have said, there are high end designer items here (Kate Spade, Ferragamo, Tory Burch, Fendi...) if you want to splurge (yeah, even discounted, I still consider it a major splurge). The pricing, I've noticed, doesn't seem to be on par with other locations. I saw a pair of pink Kate Spade sandals in another TJ's (in Connecticut), marked down from $150 to $50. Should coulda woulda bought them right then and there - this downtown DC TJ's has had the EXACT same sandals for TWO summers in a row, and never marked them down lower than $150...which is a bit absurd considering they were on clearance a year ago elsewhere, and are clearly a past season item at this point. Another thing - they change out seasonal items quickly, more so than other retail stores. Last June I came in looking for a bathing suit. June. I couldn't find any, and when I inquired I was told that "bathing suit season is over" and they weren't stocking them anymore. Again, I repeat, this was in JUNE, the beginning of bathing suit season! I guess moral is, if you need something seasonal, don't expect it to be around for long. There is a small but nice collection of baby and toddler clothes, as well. read more

I literally stop past here almost everyday after work for anything from gym clothes to headphones to facewash. Although it is not the biggest TJ Maxx they have a great range of items and a frequent turnover of stock, every second day there is something new in the store.
