The newest T.J. Maxx just opened in Alameda and it's a great big disappointment. I had my hopes up, too. But the stuff they had in there was sub-Ross. It actually made the nearby Mervyn's look tempting! Everything was so cheap looking, and there were no cool "finds" to be seen. Review #134 - 2018 After the kids got tired of playing at the park, they wanted to go shopping and this was the only store in the whole shopping center that they wanted to shop at. The store was actually pretty big, but there wasn't much to be coveted. Thank goodness! Their babies's clothings section was unorganized, as the sizes were just all over the place. I am not very patient when it comes to shopping so I only found 2 outfits for my daughter because she really loves Minnie Mouse. While 90% of the clothes here are priced DOWN for a reason, if you dig and search you will find gems, much like a sweet record store. Lincecum giants shirt for 11.99. At At and t? $25 Penguin polo shirts for $19.99. At Nordy's ? $60 ,you holla. Come to think of it, that is the only good finds I have found here, but sheet, I've been in here 4 times, and 3 of them I've found solid gear. Terrible for pants, jeans , or shorts. read more

Service certainly is horrendous . I tried paying with a gift card but apparently it can't be used except for the person that placed the return . That defeats the purpose of a gift card if no one else can use it besides the person that got it . So they told me they'll hold onto my items for me till 9pm After i came back in an hour , They separated all my items and the were put in the "go backs" . The girl kept lecturing me saying they don't hold items in the back registers but no one told me that when they offered to hold my stuff back there . It's not my business in knowing what their policies are . It sounds like incompetence in their part and they just wanted to blame me . I said I wouldn't know if they have that policy because no one informed me so it's not my fault someone told me they could hold my items in the back register . That sounds like a "you" problem not mine . So I stopped responding to the disrespectfulness from this employee and she just kept on whining over and over "I don't know why anyone would say they would keep this here when you don't keep this here" like it's my fault . I should've asked for a supervisor because this behavior was not okay . I had a horrible experience overall and don't want to associate with the tj maxx here and telling all my friends that do shop here about the negative experience I had . It's a hit or miss here ..sometimes I'll come in and find the clothes I've been searching for and sometimes I'll walk out with just one thing... But over all I'm Glad that there's a tj Max close by.. Me and my hubby did buy some jewelry here and I loved them it was cheap! There's not a big selection of baby clothes and accessories... Parking is always good lots of space.. One step up from the nearby Ross... just barely. A good place to get low cost clothing and household stuff for as low a price as possible. You have to be willing to sift through lots of stuff to find what you need though. You are basically trading your time for saving a few bucks. If you have more time than money come here. If you have more money than time go online or to a regular store so you don't have to spend 1 hour looking for your size of jeans. read more

I have been shopping here at this location since their grand opening. At times, this store can be messy but I really enjoy the sales associates. Many are long term and both younger and older. What an affordable store and just within walking distance from home! This place has a lot of great finds at prices that won't break your bank. The Mens clothing department does not have many styles to choose from. However, you can find wonderful deals on kids books and toys, furniture, outdoor essentials, various exercise equipment and products, snacks, kitchen tools, shoes, pet supplies, luggage, bedroom and bathroom essentials, makeup and beauty products, and seasonal items. The checkout line can get long depending on what time of day you're shopping. TIP: There are two places to pay and the one in the back can sometimes be a smaller line. The staff are friendly and always happy to help you. The restroom is not super clean but it does serve its purpose. The ambiance is casual and and the store can get messy during rush hour and holiday shopping. I always enjoy coming in here and finding great deals! read more

There is this very vicious Sock Monster that has followed and plagued my household for years now. It's one of those very irritating invisible monsters that only likes to munch down one sock from a matched pair and leave the other sock behind. When it isn't hungry, our Sock Monster is busy tearing at and chewing holes in our socks. Last week, Susan S. had a major "Sock Meltdown." I'd just bought a six-pack of gym socks for 6-year-old Wild Child, and much to my dismay, saw my 15-year-old (My)Space Cadet Teen son wearing (and stretching way out) at least one of Wild Child's new socks with another mismatched holey sock of questionable ownership. The next week, I noticed my Tween Daughter wearing a mismatched pair of Wild Child's socks and she wore that exact same pair all week without being washed when she wasn't wearing soccer socks. Our Sock Monster had hit a whole new level of infestation and it was time to wage war! On our way back from a late afternoon soccer practice, I took Tween Daughter and Wild Child to this TJ Maxx so we could presumably buy socks. I have to give them credit, on this particular night, the boys and men's sock choices were plentiful. I stocked up on 10 new pairs for Wild Child and 6 new pairs for Space Cadet Teen son making certain the styles and colors were distinguishable. Tween Daughter had disappeared and emerged with a few pairs of socks, tossed them in my basket while Wild Child and I picked out a few polo shirts and a bathing suit for him. So, it seems now every time I venture over to South Shore, my Tween Daughter all of a sudden has a major brassiere crisis. "Mom, I'm only down to one functional one right now!" My ex-husband's ongoing opting out of bra-shopping since "it's a girl thing" excuse is starting to get real old these days...... Great, this means drawn out dressing room time and lots of drama when it's already dinner time. I head over to the rather sparse lingerie section and Tween Daughter is no where to be found. I notice that they have quite a few bras in her size and turn around only to see her approaching me with three pairs of short-shorts that were so short, they would even make all of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, former Nair commercial models, and Miss Marcia from Romper Room collectively blush at the exact same time. "Mom, can we get these?" Figures.... The timing was perfect since I'd just received a memo from my daughter's core middle school teacher (to all of the parents) that stated "Spring has definitely arrived! Remember that tank tops are not allowed to be worn at all and shorts shorter than where your daughter's fingertips reach her thigh are also not allowed. This week's hot weather brought a plethora of dress code infractions. Kids will definitely test those limits!" No kidding. So, I said a flat "no' which she argued until I mentioned the memo and then she sullenly started looking at bras. Wild Child and I started to play hide and go seek in the neighboring handbag section. After that got old, I finally went into the dressing room and told my tween I was going to get in line. I was hungry and had had enough. The checkout line was slower then molasses. There were two women in front of me shouting at each other at close range in Farsi which made the wait even more agonizing. My tween finally arrives with the expectation that I would buy her eight bras. I said I'd buy three (damn, should have started at two!) and we finally agonizingly settled on four. At this point, my head was about to explode... Once I finally paid the very personable cashier, I couldn't wait to get out of there. In any case, if this is what I need to endure to stave off the Sock Monster and major "Brassier Crises," then I guess it's the penance I'll have to pay. This is the more upscale version of Ross. It's fun to hunt for that bargain outfit. I usually check out their kitchen items and bags. I bought a blue Bagalini shoulder bag. Lots of pockets for a discount. When I stand in line, I never know what gourmet snack or phone accessory I will find. Their overstock or reject merchandise is fine with me as long as I don't have to pay full price. read more

This TJ Maxx is currently remodeling and moving departments around and putting up new shelving and wood laminate flooring. Sorry ladies, but maybe they increase the floor space for the men's department? The men's department probably makes up 20% of the store with no shoes. The rest of the store is devoted to women's, kitchen, home and bedding, some food items, and a small section for kids. The store is usually well maintained by the workers, in that merchandise aren't a mess with clothing on the floor, etc. Depending on the time and day, the line at check-out can be long. The do have one register in the back entrance that leads to the mall. Overall, women and people looking for housewares, kitchenware and bedding will find TJ Maxx to be a nice store to shop for quality products as great prices. But guys might be disappointed with the limited inventory selection. read more

It's like they give us all the reject clothing...and if you shop places like Ross or Marshall's you'll be able to tell right away that they're charging an average $10 more for the same brands. Pretty much love TJ MAXX in general but I love this location for its selection of purses, cosmetics, soaps/lotions and accessories. Saturday mornings are when they have restocked the store with all the new shipments from the previous night. It is also one of the busiest of times to visit this location in Alameda, but I have found lots of cool things at prices that beat even Amazon and overstock.com There is always a good selection of designer purses, scarves, sunglasses and hats to choose from. The clothing selection is great at times and kinda boring at others. I always have luck in the home furnishings as well so if you need things for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen etc. this place is excellent. Note: The store is sometimes in complete disarray so make sure you have time to browse thoroughly when shopping here. The Fairfield-cordellia location at business center is reallllly nice as well. read more

I stopped in here a few days before Christmas, I know I know, I'm a glutton for punishment, the store is quite large, but everything is pretty jumbled together. Even allowing for the holiday season, it is quite obvious that things are basically shoved on the shelves so everything is a crapshoot. I spoke to a gal in the kitchen dept who lives on the island and she said that when she comes here, she looked at it like a treasure hunt...sometimes you win..sometimes you loose. That day I won. I found the Baking with the Cake Boss book (hardcover) for $5.99! On Amazon it is $19.34! I also found The Deen Brothers-Recipes for the Road for $3.00...again the Amazon price is $16.47. All in all the trip was worth it. This location is in a really cool outdoor shopping center and is right next to an awesome looking Trader Joe's. Parking is lot style--plentiful and well lit at night. I'd go back...I like to fancy myself a pirate on the lookout for treasure! read more

This is one store out of a billion... I've been to TJ Maxx's in CA, IL & MI and this one is ok, not fantastic and not awful. I visit this store once a week because it's near other stores I frequent. There are some TJs that I can find a ton of things each visit... this one is not so reliable. I have picked up a few good finds like 500 thread count sheets and some work shirts for my husband, but I never seem to find any clothes for me... which is probably good for the bank account but not good for my closet. None the less I'll continue to visit in hopes of finding some great deals and maybe a goofie Halloween thing for my front door. read more

It's a shame. I've spent literally over $15,000+ between this store and TJM online IN JUST THE LAST YEAR ALONE, redoing decorations in my place and buying a whole new wardrobe due to a big weight loss. I was in the store yesterday doing a number of online returns and the store manager was helping me named HOPE (a middle-aged black woman). I also had a ring I bought in-store last time I was here when I spent $500+ per my receipt. I asked to return the $30 ring but she told me I had to return in the jewelry dept. Fair enough. After completing my non-jewelry returns, I headed to jewelry dept. On my way to Jewelry, I saw a few items in Beauty that I was interested in buying so I picked them up IN MY HAND. I ran into the same manager on the floor and she quickly disappeared. Next thing I know, she has her staff call SECURITY on loudspeaker to watch me. I walk over to jewelry, I return my ring and ask the cashier if I can purchase the beauty products there, she says no, I have to go to the front. Meanwhile, security staff walks by me and glares. So I go all the way back up to the front to BUY THE ITEMS that WERE IN MY HAND. As I'm leaving a man dressed in black with a hat that says "SECURITY" steps up to the exit. I have never seen that at this store before and I've been here well over 100 TIMES. He glares at me as I walk out. (??) I get in my car and the security guy is STILL watching me. As I start pulling out, he walks away from the door. I left feeling like a criminal. But I hadn't done anything wrong. As another woman of color, I was sorely disappointed in the shift manager's actions. One should NEVER go somewhere to buy something and feel like crap, no matter how much they spend. I have spent a lot of money at this store in the last year but I WILL NEVER BUY anything in this store again. The manager will be happy to know that I will CONTINUE to return my difficult online returns here for her and her staff though. :) And I hope she looks forward to all of those interactions and making new price labels. I also plan to send a letter to TJM corporate, when they review my history as a customer, I hope they'll want to do the right thing. Vindictive retaliation against customers for complicated transactions not their fault should be severely frowned upon and punishable. I'm not gonna lie... I'm a baller on a budget. Whenever I need a clean new fit from dress pants to A's jerseys, this place has it all - for cheap! I really do prefer the TJ Maxx business model. They buy out stock from manufacturers instead of just getting worthless factory reject items like other discount stores. I wouldn't get all my clothes here but if you need to pick up something for a random occasion in Alameda, then TJ Maxx is your best bet. read more

If you have time to look for bargains, then this store might work for you for home stuff , shoes and clothes. i think Ross and Marshall's are a little cheaper. (1 extra star for Alameda over Moraga for the one decent manager) Downturn to the economy=okay to abuse discount store shoppers? Update to return policy and customer service, as well as selection are GONE. 1) Items from other TJ Maxx location not returnable. 2) Items from clearance not returnable or exchangeable even with receipt. 3) Poor response from argumentative management. I've been an avid shopper at TJ Maxx and Marshall's for over 15 years, but the recent changes to their return policy are NOT customer friendly and the selection hasn't been as good as in the past. Over the course of two weeks, preparing for vacation, I purchased several items both at this store, and the Alameda store. When I attempted to return all items at Moraga, I was told that I needed to drive them to Alameda because they weren't coming up in their system. Plus one item, which had been randomly hung on the end of an isle when I found it, was apparently a clearance item and "past season". Well no sh*t, isn't that the definition of a clearance rack at a discount store? I was told they couldn't take that item back anyway, because the past season item may have been purchased too long ago (even though it was on my recent receipt). I asked to speak to a manager, who repeated the same strange mantra. So buyer beware! Even with a receipt, items may not be returnable or even exchangeable... So I get in the auto and drive through the tunnel, back past home in Oakland, across the water to Alameda. I've had okay service here recently and the manager is great, meaning he seems to "get it" about the customer service thing. However, today some overlords from corporate were there, who came up, after about 8 pages to get a manager, to help process all the returns. An employee, standing in her own line to purchase shoes and cash her paycheck, informed the employee paging management that the managers were all "in the break room". Great. When they come out, the big guy in charge gets stopped after approving a check, by a sales associate from the floor who is wanting to find out if two purses of the same brand but different style are the same price. Without even looking at the customer who is inquiring about the tag-less item, he starts spouting off: "These just came in today, who's taking the tags off of my damn purses..." and basically yells at the woman inquiring that they rest of them are all over on the rack where she found it, if she could just bring a similar style up. Then he thinks better of it and storms off. It was ridiculous. When I attempted to speak to a manager, I was told that the Moraga store "always does that" (sends people back to the store of origin) and that since my item wasn't in the computer, I couldn't return it. I was so furious, and now own 70.00 of items purchased two weeks ago at a TJ Maxx that I can't use or return. Needless to say, I won't be back. I'd rather go to Nordstrom's so at least I don't have to watch other customers get yelled at or accused or tag-clipping, and can return unused items if I need to. Which is actually what the employee who denied me said I should do..."there are a lot of other stores open around here, our policy had to be updated and this is a very good place for us employees to work..." I could almost say I'm allergic to this store, yet for some reason I find myself coming back every now & then in hopes of discovering something new about it I'll like. It's pretty drab all-in-all. I think that this TJ MAxx is the best TJ Maxx I have ever been too. I cant explain why, but the merchandise seems to be pristine, good quality, great brands and soo up to date with the style. ( The clothes quality can be compared to the Ross right next door- putting Ross to shame, you can see what I mean). TJ maxx is always one of those stores where you can't walk out empty handed- you always find at least one thing! In my case you find several armfuls! Their women/junior department never disappoint me, that includes the clearance section. We swore to only buy our dogs toys and dog beds from there because there is such a selection and it's affordable! Their home section is also pretty good too! Kids section is also hit or miss! My husband hates the Men's department! He can never find anything and it's seriously Slim Pickins'! I agree! It definitely sucks! But you know what sucks even more? Their customer service!!! Usually when I'm shopping, I get somewhat mediocre average customer service, but no one who is ever truly happy to work there. On a recent visit, each associate I encountered needed a lesson in customer service. 1. I cut my finger on a sharp tag and asked the fitting room attendant for a band aid. She couldn't fully comprehend what I needed and it was a bit frustrating. She was not helpful or didn't seen to care AT ALL! I swear her lights were on but nobody was home. B A N D A I D... 2. The woman at the front who gave me a band aid didn't even look up at me when she gave it to me. Didn't even address me. 3. I saw a dress I liked on a go-back rack. I went to grab it and some little short Hispanic woman with short brown hair scolded me for touching her rack. Get this! She grabs the dress from me. Hangs it back on her rack. And then picks it up herself and hands it to me. Are you gonna take it then? She says! Well GAHHH-LEEEE?! and yes I'll take it *cheese* :) Again people! This is Alameda! These associates better put some smiles on their faces and get happy! Quick! Lol don't get me wrong, I've encountered a few great associates BACK IN THE DAY, but there are definitely more bad associates than good! I love going to TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods. This TJ Maxx is close to me so I go pretty frequently hoping to score a great deal. They do have some pretty good deal. I bought a pair of Dr. Scholl's sneakers and a pair of Rampage ankle boots for $19.99 each! Their customer service is wonderful too. I can always find an employee somewhere in the store to help me if I need it. They only earn 3 stars because of their lack of a clearance aisle (in their case aisles). Unlike other TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods, you mainly find items in this section that are imperfect (chips, missing parts, dirty) versus an actual deal. It's gotten to the point where I sometimes just sweep through it and don't look. For this reason, I do go to other locations to look at their sale sections before I buy certain items just to make sure it isn't on sale elsewhere. A few months back, I bought some Japanese bowls on sale at the TJ Maxx in Fremont (off Auto Mall Parkway) and was hoping to find another one at the Alameda location. They did have one in the sale section but it was cracked and still costed $4! Granted someone could've cracked it after the sale tag was out on but if you look at other items, there's no way all of the ceramics and glassware just happened to be chipped or cracked after the new tag was put on. Do I come back? Absolutely. It's still a TJ Maxx and generally their sale prices are reasonable or a good deal. read more

The items for purchase are so-so basically the same you'll find at Ross next door. The employees aren't however if you like being made fun of while you're shopping then go there. You can expect to be treated like a poor looser thief even if you drop hundreds of dollars on the cheap merch the manager encourages juvenile behaviors of the staff. Take a listen to their conversations at the registers next time you're there. Better yet when one of them asks if you need any help tell them "yes" they will just keep walking, but they will stay an eye site away so they can watch you fumble on the disorganization laughing that you probably don't have the money to buy Christmas presents for your children. Great deals. Large store. Decent brands. This is one of the first TJ Maxx's I've been to, and I was thoroughly impressed. I thought it would be just like Ross, which I used to work at years and years ago, but it isn't! It is definitely similar, but in my opinion has much higher quality merchandise. Of course, I can't speak on the women's departments, but the men's clothing and the home departments are awesome! The brands of clothing are definitely better here than at Ross, including Lucky Brand jeans and underwear. I got some Lucky stuff for half the price of even Nordstrom Rack! I always end up coming here when I'm in need of new kitchen gear. They have tons of utensils, tools, cookware, glasses, gadgets, etc, and they're all at great prices. A good portion of my kitchen is from here. They actually have had some pretty decent hot sauces as well. There is also a good selection of bathroom items, like towels, shower caddies, soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, floor mats, etc etc. Everything at prices around half of what you'd find even at Target. I have been back lots of times and will continue to. The only bad thing is you can't always get specific things you are looking for-- merchandise changes relatively often here. If you see something you like, buy it! The exact same thing will most likely not be there when you come back. read more

The place is stuffed and the organization isn't too great, but I always end up finding a gem or two in here, especially with their shoe section, which actually goes down to a size 5! Nicely done TJ's. They mostly have clothes, but they also sell other random stuff like candles, kitchen ware, etc. Their products actually usually aren't defective -- apparently they can price their items way cheaper because they don't advertise, have way less staff, and stuff way more items into a rack that should be legal. This TJ Maxx location is excellent when it comes to customer service and prices, but they fail epically when it comes to their inventory. If you need anything for home decor or travel they have you covered, but if you are coming here to buy clothes; you may leave empty handed, they don't have a large variety and the clothes that they do have are very ugly. Also, many of their items are incomplete or broken; I've looked at tons of storage containers with missing pieces and figurines with busted arms and legs. read more

TJ Maxx is definitely a step up from the Ross at this former Southshore center. This place is clean and there is barely anyone shopping here. The brands are pretty decent ranging from Kenneth Cole to BCBG to goodies from the Barefoot Contessa. I also saw a bunch of gear (sweats and bathrobes) from JUICY although I would hope that the fad of blazing JUICY and SEX- KITTEN across your pa dunk-a-dunk is over by now. There are some really cute pj sets for under $10. I was tempted to buy some but decided to put my money into real clothes. The prices are great here- slacks for $16, shirts for $15, and shoes (Rockport, some nasty purple looking Uggs) for $25. As for clothes being on the right rack, this being a closeout store, they are obviously on the wrong rack. So search, search, search and you just might be lucky enough to find what you are looking for in your size. One tip about the parking lot- don't park next to the parking lamps. Pigeons, seagulls, and all little birdies will poop on your vehicle as if they have diarrhea. :( read more
