This business is top shelf for Tee-shirts, Hoodies and more.. How many places can boast that their Tee-shirts are designed and made in Oakland? How many things come from across the sea? For me, it is refreshing to see the clean crisp designs at Oaklandish. Yes, the prices are more than Ross Dress for Less or Target, but when you buy at Oaklandish there is a percentage of the profit that gets donated back to the community. And since the designs are local, the artist/craftsmen get money instead of who knows who? There weren't very many people in the store when I was there the other day (the beginning of May, 2021), and social distancing and limited number of people in the store at one time was still happening. There was a very sweet young woman who was answering all of my questions about the art on the Tees, etc. Some of the artists that design the Tee-shirts are well-known in the local art community. This store is for people who want to wear their Oakland pride on local designed shirts. There are bold color tee shirts displayed on the wall like individual works of art--so you can actually see them without touching them. There are emblems for your car or house windows; solid color hats with simple emblems; glasses and mugs from Oakland; Oakland magnets; and tie-dyed socks; and much, much more. I almost didn't buy anything at this store because of their worker Leilani. I was having issues w my Apple Pay (which I've never used before) and she started giving me attitude n was zero help. Both her and Julio were mid conversation and seemed uninterested in helping me at all. I stepped outside to fix it, and when I came in I mentioned that they seemed to not be interested in helping anyone. She immediately went on the attack and told me that my attitude was the issue, and mentioned something about my mask. She never asked me to put one on, I put in on willingly after seeing a sign in the store. These people almost made this store lose my business, I would have had a better experience with a self service kiosk since I already knew what I wanted. They're getting paid to do literally nothing, almost worse then nothing because they're causing people like me to never want to come back. read more

Oaklandish has opened a second store and they had their grand opening event earlier in the day with plenty of activity happening at the site. My husband and I walked in and right away it's "pump up the volume" and let's rock, dance (PARTAY!) or whatever...old school music from the 80's was thumpin' and customers could help themselves to some refreshment (fresh fruit platter, pesto pasta salad, assorted flavored juices, cheese 'n cracker tray) and they even had some bubbly...hey, hey...it's like "can't get enough of that funky stuff." The place was crowded, the line was long for purchasing merchandise; but when the hits were continuous - non stop like a Cameron Paul mix (back in the days), hey what can I say...get ya back off that wall, hit the floor and get down on it. Who did my honey and I run into at Oaklandish? None other than Mayor Jean Quan doing some shopping. The employees were super nice and friendly. I got the royal treatment because they noticed that I had my Oaklandish t-shirt and hoodie on, plus I was carrying their old canvas tote in my hand. Hey, I have to represent. Even though the store is smaller than the one on Broadway in Downtown Oakland, I like the artwork on the wall - the Port of Oakland cranes, street signs of Fruitvale and MacArthur, AC Transit buses. I've been a fan of Oaklandish for as long as I can remember. I used to go by their van to admire the shirts and hoodie during the farmer markets on Saturdays at Lake Merrit. I was only able to purchase their apparel when it was on clearance a few times. But my first purchase ever was online when they had shirts on sale that included a free tote with purchase! I love that a portion of Oaklandish sales goes back to the community. I really do admire this company, always supporting other local shops. So today all started when my buddy Ben and I were at a local coffee shop catching up. I noticed his 510/OAK and complimented it. He told me it was Oaklandish! We exchanged how much we love the brand and how he owns a gazillion of their apparels. Then Ben mentioned how their shop (fruitvale location) is super close by....so we went! I never been before! I came in and immediately the staff was friendly! They has so much Oaklandish goodies on the counter of the register along with other "local" goodies by other local artists. The store is so nice! I'm impressed with the decoration. So the way the small store lays out their items, they hang one of each design and you would request your size and they will go grab it. They have so many they can't lay them all out. They have a nice display of baby and kids clothes, prints, stickers, gift items, etc.! I also admire how anti-black Friday they were...which is probably why they don't have sales. I think they did online a week prior. There's a shirt I have been eyeballing for the past almost 4 years now. It's the "Oakland Originals" tee I have been hoping the prices would drop but it's still at $28. I appreciate the fact they give back to the community, and it's locally made and pretty decent quality...but for a shirt it's out of my budget. I felt it was perfect for me because I am an Oakland original! Born, raised and lived my entire life! I'm very proud! My friend was so nice to get it for me! He actually bought 3 more shirts, a deck of cards ($7), a sticker pack ($12) and I think other stuff too. Anyhow, I noticed the lovely tote the cashier was placing the items in. I asked her if we can have another tote. She says she can't give us another because it's a limited tote to a purchase of $60+. My friend asked her what his total was. She responded $160. So he asked...so yeah I can get 2. Then she says it's per transaction. And he asked if he can do a separate transaction. So this conversation was able to go on because we are still waiting for the other workers to grab our shirt sizes anyway. Then I guess the cash register girl got a bit fed up and told us since we keep asking nicely she will give us another one. But it looked like they needed to have the manager give it to us. So yay! I can't believe my friend actually did damage coming here, haha. He owns so much Oaklandish shirts and things. I enjoyed my time here and My lovey new shirt! My hubby has been wanting to visit the Oaklandish store forever but we've never made it to the primary location so we were delighted to find this store open minutes from our house. It was a bit stressful on our first visit though b/c there was a bawling woman outside being interviewed by the police. I had to clutch my gold iPhone to myself a bit tighter ... Great assortment of designs on shirts and caps. I also loved the small section of Oakland made products in the middle of the store. First time at the oaklandish store in fruitvale and was very impressed. When I say the store is clean I don't just mean clean, it's sleek, it had good feng shui. I knew what I was coming in for, an Oakland roots tshirt for my 15 year old nephew and they had a good selection too! Leilani was so helpful, I told her what I needed and she explained my options. She was so friendly and when I was chatting with her about the gift, she recommended the size after explaining the sizes. I said I wanted to pay for a bag since it was a gift for later that day and she was so nice and offered to add tissue paper, it was perfect. She made me hyped to go to the store downtown which it has been some years now, I'll be going again and my nephew loves his gift! read more

I like this location because there's a (free) parking lot in the back as well as street (metered) parking. I usually find that they carry what I need EXCEPT during the holidays. That's when the broadway location would have more extensive stock on sizes (but parking sucks there). Prices are above what you would pay elsewhere but I'd gladly pay more cause they support the local community through monthly nonprofit donations, community events, and one that I've personally benefited from: the Oakland scholar tshirt give away for high school students with 3.0 or higher. Been a fan of Oaklandish gear for years! Usually go to the shop on Broadway but my friend and I decided to check out the Fruitvale location today. Parking can be a challenge but once that's done, it's a nice spot! A small shop, really friendly staff and we just so happen to be visiting on a day that the store was giving 10% of the proceeds to level playing field, a non profit for under privileged youths. Happy my money was contributing to that. Oaklandish offers some amazing quality products. The shirts cost around$30 bucks but they are so worth it! Soft and comfy! I had to set a budget before I walked in the door because I want EVERYTHING they sell! Settled on a sweet Candlestick Park shirt and a beautiful starry night themed Oakland shirt. Also have to comment that the staff went above and beyond! My friend was eyeing a mug but didn't know if it was dishwasher safe. These days, with customer service going to shit, I expected the conversation to stop there. Nope, the staff members not only looked on line to see if it was but when didn't find an answer, they called their boss to ask. Great customer service that you don't find everyday. POOR SERVICE. Went in there to buy a present for my son, since we now live in the UK and went to pay at the counter and was told to "wait a minute" without even the slightest eye contact or further acknowledgement. OK, I get it, we all get busy, but look up from the counter and smile (don't have to smile) and let me know you'll be right with me - got it! Not at this establishment. This is where the attitude started and continued through out the entire purchase transaction. Well, at the end of a retail interaction, I expect to hear a simple "thanks" or a "thank you" but alas, just more attitude which made me feel like they didn't need my business and that I shouldn't be interrupting them by trying to buy a 75 dollar sweatshirt. Unfortunately, my first experience with Oakandish was not positive. It began great when the young man working there assisted me in finding a nice Oakland shirt for my wife. It went sour upon checkout time, when I opted to pay with cash. It appears that he did not know how to process a cash payment and pressed a wrong button on the POS device. He asked me to wait while he consulted his supervisor for assistance. No problem, things happen and I understand. About 5 or so minutes went by, while they talked. I asked was everything OK and gave the young man coins in order to make my change an even $65, so it would be easier. I suggest that they give me my change and that I did not require my receipt so I can be on my way. They ignored the suggestion and asked me to wait longer. I continued to wait while the supervisor phoned someone (the owner maybe?) to assist further assistance. At this point, a line was forming at checkout and I estimate I was waiting about 10 minutes and I was given no explanation. I then said that I had to leave and to give me my change. They asked me to wait longer. I insisted to them that I could not wait, and that I wanted change or my money back. Finlay, the young man handed me change without counting it to me. I asked him to count it to me, and he counted it to himself. I checked it and he gave me $5 too much, and I informed them and handed it back. I had to ask for an apology, which came half-hardheartedly. As a former Oakland resident excited about visiting his home town, it was a disappointing experience. I was pretty excited to see Oaklandish had gotten a second location closer to home. I go there whenever I want to get someone a gift of a local t-shirt. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that the ladies' t-shirts run pretty small. I had to get my mom a men's shirt so that it would fit her. Which is fine, it's just weird. But I love their stuff...their shirts are super soft, with clever things on them...and really, the reason I decided to write this review is because they have a free book exchange in the back! I could hardly believe it when I discovered it. They don't even care how many you take, they say they get tons of donations from the group that runs it. I forget the name of the group. You can bring and take as many books as you want though. Awesome. Good selection too. I grabbed like five for a teenager I know, and three for me. I plan on bringing books there when I'm done with them. Plus, when I left with all of them (and mind you, I hadn't even bought anything, I'd just exchanged my mom's t-shirt for a bigger size), one of the girls who was working there gave me a free tote bag to haul my books away in. I R E A L L Y want to give this place 5 stars, and I'm hoping the staff can redeem themselves in the future because I love supporting local businesses and I believe in their mission and values. However, the staff does not seem to share the same sentiment. I had an issue with a product I received online that had faulty stitching, and the woman "helping" me was rude and condescending. She had a superior attitude the entire interaction. She accused me of having mistreated the clothing, instead of understanding that perhaps there was just something wrong with this particular piece of clothing. It was a whole ordeal and embarrassing that I even had to push for a manager to help me. I would have called myself instead of having to deal with her, but she refused to give me another person to call or speak too, loudly exclaiming that she "would have to deal with this on her last day." The other woman in the shop just sat there smirking the whole time and didn't even try to help. I get it, customer service can be rough, but I do it too and would never treat a customer the way I was treated that day. The only reason I don't review this place and 1 or 2 stars is because I was treated very well when I spent $250 dollars there over the holidays. Perhaps some customer service training would do this location some good. read more

You have La Farine, All Eyes On Me Optometry and Oaklandish all in a row! You can not go wrong. Richard helped me out one evening after work and he gave good advice and had lots of patience with all my questions. This is someone who is not only good at his job but also seems to enjoy it. Nice little store with the merchandise displayed along the walls in an appealing way. I needed to pick up some gifts and the two saleswomen who were in the store today were incredibly nice and helpful. Additionally, they really know the merchandise in terms of sizing and stock. Quality customer service all the way around. It's an easy place to shop because it is clean and uncluttered. They have one of every item out on display, and they get you fresh stock when you tell them what you want. Pricey, but the t-shirts make a nice gift.
