The sandwiches here are so good, you won't believe they're actually a chain! Sadly there are only two locations here in town, neither of which is particularly convenient to me. I wish these places were as common as Subway seems to be, because for only a dollar or two more per sandwich, the quality is exponentially better. And I'll let you in on a secret, too- if you pick up a copy of The Current, there's a 90% chance you'll find a buy-one-get-one coupon to use, too! I recently found one of said coupons and went today with the BF, where we split The Office Favorite and the Austin Club sandwiches, both large, and together had a meal for $7 and change. Cant really beat that, can you? The Austin Club is basically any other restaurant's version of a california club, as in club with avocado. Sounds basic, but the avocado here is a million times better than the pricey green goop haphazardly spread on your sandwich at Subway, and the bread and veggies are super fresh. Get it with the spices, oil, and vinegar, and it'll blow your mind just a little bit. For a fairly common sandwich, this place gets it really, really right. But the appropriately-named Office Favorite is on a whole 'nother level. It's basically your favorite breakfast sandwich of bacon, egg, and cheese, but kicked up to a luxe lunch: egg salad, bacon, cheese, and veggies. Don't tell me you aren't already curious. The creamy, decadent egg salad is perfectly complemented by the salty crunch of the bacon, and the cheese and veggies somehow just add to it. I'm gonna go ahead and say it: I think I've found my favorite sandwich, guys. In addition to great sandwiches, this place also has smoothies, yogurt shakes, and soups- today's feature was red beans and rice, and the aroma was out of this world. BF and I are already planning to hunt down another coupon and make this place a regular stop. Next visit we'll try the tuna, the hot pastrami sandwich, and the chocolate Elvis smoothie... y'know, if I can resist the siren song of the Office Favorite. ;) read more

I had the Big Paul Sub and it was DELICIOUS!! The combo comes with a choice of drink and chips. I ordered online, took about 20 minutes to be ready, not bad. The ordering process was very easy and simple. When I got there it was a little confusing whether my order was ready or if I had to wait in line since nobody greeted me or asked if I needed anything. I like Thundercloud Subs because they have great sandwiches without meat. It's hard to find any sandwich without meat at many places in San Antonio, but even harder to find a good one. I LOVE the fact that they have sprouts. I always hate going to a sub shop and getting a sandwich without sprouts. I always order the California Club but I also really like the Austin Club the only difference is the California comes with turkey and the Austin comes with chicken. I was used to ordering sandwiches, but during my recent visit I was trying to cut the carbs. I hesitantly ordered the salad, with one scoop of egg salad and another of tuna salad. Truly disappointed, made even more so by the fact it was right by a Subway so you can look at a predictable and boring franchise that still excels at quality and flavor while eating less than quality tasting good. Terrible. The details don't do justice to the idea that if I go into a place and ask for the same fillings I use at home, I expect it to taste like a decent sandwich. When a hungry kid won't touch their sandwich and would rather wait to go home and make their own than to take another bite... Well it was just not a happy moment and we both left hungry, grumpy and almost $15 poorer. No taste, the bread was not anything special, the fillings were tasteless somehow, and combined with the uninviting interior, borderline health inspection fail level of gross, and a dirty dingy bathroom, I was in sandwich hell. Always a fan of thunderclouds. Sandwiches are extremely consistent with great ingredients. I am a big fan of the texas tuna (tell them you want the juice) but I backed off when I saw the calorie count. That's ok. They have many other great options. Chicken and egg salads are primo back up plans. Both need a little salt but are dynamite with thunder sauce. I also highly recommend the corn and green chili soup. I've been a fan of Thundercoud Subs since I lived down the street from one in south Austin in the late 90s. The location on the corner of N New Braunfels and Nacogdoches has been my go to sandwich place in SA since I moved back to this side of town. The subs are tasty, the ingredients are fairly high quality and fresh, the staff is generally friendly and the prices are cheap. The place has a little bit of a funky Austin vibe, which makes me glad they're staying true to their ATX roots. In my opinion Thundercloud is a little better than Jimmy John's and Quizno's. read more

I have to give Nick Garza, the general manager, a HUGE shout out! He was so incredibly helpful and accommodating when I was coordinating a fairly large catering/delivery order from out of town. When he could not deliver to my exact location due to traffic issues, knowing this was a time-sensitive situation, he literally parked on the side of the highway, called me towards his location, and then dropped the food down to me. I've been on the search for an awesome sub sandwich within San Antonio. I'm from Miami and we've got some kick-ass places, so I've been looking for a good one ever since I moved here! This place is small and is right next to Starbucks (bonus). Right as I walked in I was greeted by Micaela. She is incredibly friendly and we ended up chatting for a while and she recommended all the good stuff. I ordered the Texas Tuna for my husband - he LOVED it - and just a regular boring old turkey for myself. Everything tasted fresh and really good, I loved the vinaigrette they put on their sandwiches, very flavourful. I WOULD GIVE 5 STARS IF THIS LOCATION ONLY HAD THE TOMATO BASIL DIPPING SAUCE. I've been eating at Thundercloud for about 20 years and have always been a fan. Recently at one of the Austin locations they offered me a side of this Tomato Basil sauce to dip my sandwich in. "The first one is free, just like crack," she said, so I tried it, and yeah, it's basically like crack. I went back 3 more times that week for the same exact thing...the club sandwich with a side of tomato basil sauce. Sadly my time in Austin ended and I had to relocate to San Antonio, but fortunately there are a couple locations, including this one, that aren't too far away. As a vegan your sub options can be pretty pathetic at best. Not at TC. Their veggie sub is loaded with guacamole, hummus and tons of veggies like sprouts, mushrooms, tomato, red onion etc. It's the place to go for an affordable, quick vegan lunch.
