I've been hearing so much about Thunder Cloud's famous egg salad sandwich with bacon and finally decided to try it out for myself. First off, if you like/love boiled eggs, this sandwich is for sure a keeper. The texture was very eggy and not too rich from the mayo. You can't go wrong with adding the warm and crisp bacon. It's almost like breakfast for lunch. For this sandwich, I recommend the wheat bead rather than white. For $5 and a 9" sub I'm happy. I knocked off 1 star because they don't seem to believe in wearing gloves when decorating your sandwich. Let's hope the "ALL EMPLOYEES MUST WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE RETURNING TO WORK" sign is followed. *swallows* read more

I don't really like giving Thundercloud a 3 because other Thunderclouds are actually nice but this particular Thundercloud deserves the "A-OK." The people working at this Thundercloud.... I feel like they hate their lives or something. There's not pleasantness in their voices, eyes, or body language. It's pretty sad. I got the Meatball sub and it was so tasty and warm. The only thing to be forewarned is that they come as two large meatballs in tack (at least the small sub comes with two). This made eating it a bit difficult. Heard this place had awesome sandwiches. I was completely let down. When I received it - it looked like a child's sandwich. It was a 6 inch with a pinch of lettuce, a very thin amount of turkey, a tsp full of peppers that they charge you extra for (???), and a large amount of mayo. The bread was good that's about it. So ordered ahead of time and they had about 20 min to make my sandwich (and get it right). Now I eat Thundercloud all over Austin and was thinking that this location was going to make it right also,... So nope.. I ordered a: Gluten Free veggie sub W/O Mushrooms and ADD Jalapeno to the sandwich. Now what did I get? A GF "veggie" sub with only tomatoes, onions, lettuce , hummus and avocado!!! They missed about 40% of the ingredients that I said yes too.. how does that happen? So you have me wait AND you screw up my order. Now you ask "why didn't you take it back?!" ... well that is because I had to go to work in Lakeway and couldn't go back. I ate the sandwich because I was starving, but literally felt as if I was eating a hummus sandwich and that was it. Oh yeah my sandwich was soggy too, because of too much hummus. Whole experience a no go.. unless you live in this area, don't go to this location unless you can stand in front of them and critique their sandwich making skills! read more

I'm probably what most people would call a "regular" at Thundercloud. I enjoy the food and its healthy. My favorite store is the Thundercloud on the corner of Ranch Road 620 and 2222. There's one particular employee that shines amongst all of them and her name is Juanita. If you run into her and ask her how she's doing she will always tell you she's doing fantastic. If you get a chance to talk to her you will see her attitude is always consistently positive and this rubs off on others. She happens to know my sandwich by heart which is nice but she doesn't just throw the ingredients together. She takes enough time to make it look and taste delicious. I own a business myself that deals with the public and I can tell you it's employees like Juanita that really make the business successful and create an incredible customer experience which makes us want to come back. I would love to steal her from my business. Highly recommend. read more

This was my first time at Thundercloud. I ordered the Club and N.Y. Italian subs on wheat bread. The club sandwich only had turkey, ham and cheese. What happened to the bacon??? Taste and quality were "meh." I can make a better tasting sandwich at home. The only reason I decided to give this place a try (against my better judgment, seeing how this place looks very dumpy) is because I didn't want to make the drive all the way to Jersey Mike's on Anderson Mill Road. I will not be returning. I'd rather drive the distance and pay more at Jersey Mike's. Their ingredients are better quality and they get your order right. read more

I crave the "Office Favorite" sandwich: egg salad, bacon, cheese (provolone for me), mayo, and salt on wheat bread. You can add other stuff of course, such as tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Tomatoes might be good. I like mine sort of plain. I am an expert at egg salad sandwiches, and Thundercloud has one of the very best. WhichWich has other very good sandwiches, but I was very disappointed with their egg-salad. (Thundercloud is cheaper anyway). My daughter likes a T-Cloud sandwich of her own creation, called the BAT: Bacon, Avacado, and Tomato. Everytime I drive by that way, the wacky arm-waving inflatable tubeman (in hot pink) is always there to remind me of my favorite sandwich! Good quality meat, good quantity, good price, OK bread. Had the Italian, and it was decent. What really set these guys apart was the cool, independent vibe (yes, I do know it's a chain), and the friendly non-fast-food employees. It's quick. It's cheap (especially if you get whatever the daily special is). It's healthy (if you don't load it up with mayo). Service is always prompt and usually with a smile. The bread is gluten free, which makes me feel less guilty. I feel like the subs have more fresh, higher quality, ingredients than a Quizno's, which is higher quality than Subway, and the portions are larger. Also, it's a local chain with an Austin vibe, which is always points from me. I'd give it five stars, but the employees at this location seem to be trying to hard to be hipsters. Or maybe they're hipsters out of their environment, as this *IS* suburbia. Don't feel bad, though, Thundercloud 620. I think the same of the Freebird's up here - everything loses its Austin touch when it's staffed by yuppie high school kids. read more

Stopped in here for some subs. We're visiting the area, so we're n00b to the Austin food market place. I ordered The Club with thundersauce. The ingredients were very fresh, the bread was good, and the meat was tasty. Honestly speaking, it was a four out of five. The wife ordered a egg salad sandwich and she wanted to go back and get a second one it was so good. If she liked it, this place deserves five stars... she is much more a foodie than me. Fast! fresh! and healthy! The bread here is so much better than other sub companies - baked fresh every day in Austin by a private bakery. Great taste and ingredients make Thundercloud head and shoulders above its competition. I have heard people question the hygiene (long hair), but I've never known anyone to get sick from eating there since I moved here in 1987. read more

Kinda rude and unhappy I ordered online (like my wife does once a week from her job). but when I showed up there was no order. Ok, no big deal. I showed them the Thunder Cloud confirmation on my phone and all I got was "I don't know anything about the website". So, while the lady was making my 4 sandwiches, I asked "So do alot of people have problems ordering online?". She snipped "We take orders on the phone or in person". Thundercloud USED to be an Austin company, an original, homegrown, "keep it weird" and inclusive. Not sure what happened but they are 100% corporate, non-Austin now. They have shops all over town. Have been to this location several times and it is as consistently good, fast and friendly as most other locations. Thundercloud - a great Austin restaurant. Colorful employees strive to make your sub just exactly the way you want it. The Office favorite is very hard to beat - egg salad and bacon - yum! Lots of other great subs too. I haven't been here in a while. On the way to the lake, we stopped here to pick up lunch and snacks. The sandwiches hold up well compared to other large chains. The service feels local like Amy's rather than an assembly line. I like the baked goods here as well. read more

After reading the reviews I wasn't sure if I wanted to eat there for lunch. I have eaten at a Thundercloud before on N Lamar and my first experience wasn't good at all.Yes, it was that bad!! This time however, was very different ! I ordered the Office favorite which was egg salad with bacon on wheat. Very yummy in the tummy !!! This sandwich has a good amount of egg salad and a good amount of veggies which is a plus . It's not an overloaded sub like the others. It's just a good sandwich ... simple and fills you up. Price is ok and people are friendly. Only minus is that they don't wear the plastic gloves but have different people to handle the money which is ok for me. Jersey mikes is the same way too. Over all I just like the sandwich, but will have to follow up to make sure everything is the same. read more

For a sandwich shop we give it a five, much better than subway...but it isn't the Ritz people. the sandwiches are fresh, tasty and fairly priced. we eat there most weekends and the staff is never rude. We like the various club sandwiches with guacamole. It has an Austin vibe which you either love or hate...we are OK with it. They wanted to improve, and the fact they followed up softens my frustration. Thanks TC for caring! I've been a Thundercloud Subs fan my whole life, been going to one Thundercloud or another as long as I can remember. In just a few short visits to this location I've had a complete change of heart. I'm angry because I loved them and they've hurt me deep. I went to TC over Subway or Quiznos because of the super Texas-style friendly sandwich makers. Always with a smile and good small talk. The sandwiches were always full and flavorful, I smile just remembering them. No longer though, this TC has the most depressing robots for sandwich makers. They are short with customers, impatient, rude, and without any heart or soul. They care nothing about the sandwich, the TC heritage, or the customers. The sandwiches have gotten worse and worse, with each subsequent visit I believed less and less that I was going to get a good sandwich and enjoy it. This last visit was the last straw. I came in the evening, an hour and a half before closing time. The sandwich maker was incredibly skimpy on my sandwich, even after I paid for double toppings I was still eating 90% bread. I went and asked for even more toppings, and was charged again, so triple toppings now I've paid for, and it is only 50% of the sandwich it was in the past. Which makes it worthless. So I'm eating this worthless sandwich, the TC doesn't close for another hour and the same terrible fella comes over and starts cleaning all around me, blocks me in with chairs, benches and dirt. After 20+ years of TC I'm done, this place, this sandwich maker, has killed it for me. I won't be recommending TC in the future, and will dissuade others from going. Subway, Quiznos, Jimmy Johns, all of those are great alternatives, don't waste your money or your evening trying to enjoy TC. Go somewhere else. read more

The sub was good, but my biggest problem was with the service and the general way the shop was run. This was easily the longest amount of time I've ever had to wait to even order a sub, because of their ridiculous way of running their line, payment process, and sub making. There was only two people in front of me but I still had to wait probably ten minutes before someone helped me. The guy who was making my sandwich was also making four other sandwiches for some other unknown customer and so took about three times as long as he should have. And then they were running everything through a single cash register, like this is a mom and pop store from the 1950s, so I had to wait five minutes just to pay. Basically, the sub was good, but not worth the absurd wait. Unless you're the only person in line, just go somewhere else. read more

"The Club" is delicious, even though it has extra or missing ingredients EVERY time I order it! Last time, tomatoes were missing. The time before, my sandwich had mustard on it that I didn't ask for. Having lived in the Northeast my whole life, where there are sandwich shops like this on nearly every block, I decided to see how close a comparison could be made. The staple for any sub sandwich shop is the Italian cold cut. They offer something called the New York Italian here. The roll was good, the contents consisted of Salami, Cheese, Capicola (ham), and Ham? ( I'm pretty sure the latter was a basic boiled ham, yuk) Where is the Mortadella, which would have made it an ITALIAN SANDWICH !! I'm not asking for Prosciutto here, which would have been nice, but price prohibitive. Next, I was asked if I wanted mustard or mayonnaise on it !!!! You've got to be kidding! I'll have some olive oil please, and put tomatoes and onions too. When I opened the wrapper up at the table, what did I see but LETTUCE!! and no onions! WHEN DID THE WORD LETTUCE ENTER THE CONVERSATION? After yanking the greenery out of my sandwich it was fairly tasty, even though it was skimpy with the meat and had 2 hams and no Mortadella. The biggest surprise was when I got crushed red cherry peppers on it! I was beginning to think that I could only get Jalepeno's in Texas. I'll be back to try some of the other sandwiches too, but for now I only give it 3 stars. read more

Since first writing my review of Thundercloud a while back I've revisited and really glad I did. It's not that my first review was bad but my experience wasn't as good as I was hoping. Since then, I've had several sandwiches at several locations and have been very pleased every time. Loved it! Just had it for the first time yesterday and it was awesome. All I wanted was something to fill my stomach and satisfy my hunger, and boy did it. I was expecting tastes close to Subway, but it tasted more like home made subs with a twist of Firehouse subs. I got the Austin sub with everything on it. The service was fast and it has a great view of the woodline next to the tables. There's even a spot outside to dine. I'll definitely be going back to enjoy another delicious sub :) read more
