About two weeks ago, after we saw their menu online, we noticed that they had Vietnamese food we had never heard of, so we decided to try it. However, when we went there, they told us many of the dishes on the online menu were no longer served, due to recent change in ownership. So no, they didn't have Bánh Xèo or many other items anymore. I'm not sure if they have added items back yet. But if you want certain items, I'd recommend calling ahead. I got their hot stone filet mignon rice noodles. This dish was served by a heated stone bowl with broth. On the side were two plates: one with bean sprouts, Thai basil, and jalapeño slices - the classic trio, and the other with filet mignon, rice noodles, and veggies. I was supposed to add ingredients to the bowl to cook them. Since the stone bowl was already full of broth, I had to ask for an extra bowl for me to scoop out some broth to get some space for other ingredients. That was fine, but the stone bowl was extremely hot, so I ended up overcooking both the meat and rice noodles... Their stone bowl rice noodles is from $30 -$45. Given the price and experience, I wouldn't come back. read more

I love Alo 5!! I spent a summer in Vietnam and was craving some authentic Vietnamese food and this place did not disappoint! Their Bahn mi is absolutely delicious and filled with yummy meats and fresh veggies. The broken rice plate with pork really hit. I love the soup they give with it too! It's a simple but flavorful savory broth! I felt like I was back in Vietnam! (Until I got the bill lol) Yes it is on the expensive side but worth every penny! Banh Xeo here is pretty good. The crepe is nice and crispy, and the veggies and shrimp fillings go well together with the fish sauce served together. I like it's served with lettuce and rice paper so you can make your own wrap. read more

I got a bahn mi to go. When I got home and opened my sandwich, it was packed full of chicken. I was so impressed. There was so much chicken in the sandwich that all the toppings, the carrots, the cilantro, the cucumber all were packed in a separate plastic bag because. They wouldn't even fit in the sandwich, so I actually had to take some of the chicken out so I can put the toppings in. It was so delicious. The chicken is so tender. The cilantro was so fresh, the carrots were crisp, the cucumbers were crisp, just a great sandwich and it was actually kind of big that I had to cut it in half. Alo 5 is located on Highway 620 before you get to Lakeway bridge. It has an assortment of Vietnamese menu items to choose from Phoa to stir fry. I met a Yelper friend for dinner at Alo5. Service was a premium at Alo5. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by the host with a big friendly smile. Our waiter, Hoa, was extremely friendly and helpful with menu items. Once inside the restaurant, you are immediately transported to Vietnam...colorful walls, traditional flowers and architecture. My friend had orange chicken and crab Rangoon's. I had shrimp and pork spring rolls and a vermicelli bowl. I sampled one of my friends Rangoon's and they were good but a bit too hard on the outside. My spring roll was quite tasty and larger than the standard spring roll. It came with a very flavorful peanut sauce with actual peanuts on top. My vermicelli bowl was huge, clearly enough for two people. It was exquisitely flavored with a mixture of hot (chicken) and cold (vegetables.) The carrots tasted almost pickled. Came here for dinner last night with my boyfriend and we both really liked this spot. He had never had bahn mi before but he really loved it. The bread is so good and fresh and all of the ingredients go so well together. I got the beef pho and it was great. I loveee pho and the broth here is super good. Lot of flavor! Very solid Vietnamese restaurant. They have a few other Asian dishes but the core menu is Vietnamese and quite good. The ambiance is neighborhood casual. The menu has enough options where you could visit 2-3 times a week. Their star is the bowl of Pho. Several proteins to choose. My favorite was the brisket and rare beef. Simply delicious. Very savory, not too salty. Nice broth. The grilled chicken Vermicelli bowl was excellent. Crisp, crunchy vegetables and well prepared grilled chicken. Very flavorful when you add the sweet sauce. Tried a variety of dishes and the standouts were the beef combo pho and signature milk tea with boba. The Bun Bo Hue was just ok but I'll definitely be back for boba and pho. The manager/owner was very nice but they have some kinks to work out. Menu was slightly confusing because online they had picture of fried rice and noodle stir fry but we couldn't find it on the menu. Some of the items on the menu was also not available. Hopefully they fix some of these grand opening issues soon. Overall, I'm satisfied and Will be back especially for the boba. read more

Had a great experience here. The food was pretty good and the service was amazing. Pho (rare beef & brisket) 4/5. Nothing to complain. They offer all the necessary basic condiments and veggies for the pho. It satisfied my craving and perfect for December weather in Austin. Banh xeo: 4/5 - not the most authentic but again, it hits all the notes so would not complain. I like how they offer the rice paper wrap (this is authentic way of eating it in the Trung region of VN) . Fish sauce is sweet but we like it that way. For $9, it is a pretty good deal for a refreshing appetizer or a main dish. Banh Mi (grilled pork with egg) 4.5/5 - again, this one was delicious and hit all the right notes and flavor. We ordered a large and it's huge. Loved that the outside of the sandwich is crunchy and the inside is soft, airy and light. We would come back to try their other dishes. read more

Was looking for a late night dinner spot (around 9:00 pm ish). What an excellent find!!! A few people when we walked in and pleasantly surprised that they are open until 11:00 pm!! Everything else around shuts down at 9:00. I hope the continue with the later hours!! Spring rolls were large and very good! The shaken beef (bo luc lac) was tender and flavorful and the grilled pork spring roll was delicious and fresh. The butter garlic wings were very garlicky so if you're a garlic lover like me it'll right up your alley! Highly recommend both eating here and takeout. Fast and friendly and family owned (I met Lin, one of the owners, who came by to check on us). Good news first! The décor of the "new" Alo5 is a wonderful improvement. It's probably the first time this restaurant location hasn't felt like an IHOP in all the years that it's been open. While it wasn't terribly busy when I visited, the wait staff was attentive and quick. The new owners are also very kind and made a point to visit all the tables and solicit feedback. As longtime fans of the original Alo5, we know the previous restaurant set a very high bar for food and value. It was easily one of our favorite Vietnamese spots in Austin. The challenge for any new ownership is balancing fresh changes with the legacy that regulars loved. The new Alo5 has a different menu and new (worse) pricing. We noticed that some of our old favorites are still offered, but the recipes and presentation seem to have changed for the worse...significantly. For example, the meat in our dishes had a different flavor profile, and the portion sizes were either smaller or significantly smaller than we remembered. Paired with a noticeable 20% to 100% increase in the prices of some dishes, the value proposition just hit different. I had their grilled steak plate and my wife had pho along with Vietnamese iced coffee the flavors we had at this place definitely surpassed other local Vietnamese shops in this part of Austin! The food came out quickly and we were followed up with throughout the meal to make sure we were being taken care of. The last time I felt like this, I was paying hundred dollars more for similar service downtown at Trulucks. The decor was welcoming and the wall paintings were beautiful to look at throughout our meal. I recently read this book titled Unreasonable, Hospitality, and if anyone else has read it, I swear, I believe the family that runs this restaurant must have read it as well.
