So I usually place an order here pretty often. I live and work nearby and would typically order during the work week on average once a week or so. I haven't ordered as often during COVID, but still pick up my regular order pretty often. I always place an order online for pickup. Last evening, I placed my usual order. Upon arrival, I was told that they ran out of Tuna and I wasn't in the mood for another type of sandwich so I figured I'd just cancel. The manager at the time wasn't on duty, so I called today and he informed me that they sent in my refund request. Additionally, for the inconvenience (I told the manager I would re-order anyway for lunch today since I have a busy work day and haven't had lunch yet!) he told me he'd be happy to fix me up a sub right away for pickup. I can't ever say that I've had a negative experience at Thundercloud at any location and certainly not this one. The manager was very friendly and apologetic and also transparent about how their refund process works. Anyway, I felt the need to recognize their great customer service!! :) Thank you, Thundercloud Lake Austin! BTW - the sandwiches are always great as well! read more

Lake Austin may be one of the most enjoyable strips to find family-friendly dining in Austin, with offerings ranging from the most iconic coffee shop, to lake-side patio dining, even to 24-hour eateries. Oh, and Tex-Mex. And... well, sandwiches and entrance into Westlake. Lake Austin Blvd. has it all. Thundercloud Subs, one of many--but this location specifically, fits right into the category of convenience at its finest. Cheap, something for everyone, and just all around consistent. One thing I am proud of is how the grub always tastes good, or at least as good as something that has no attributes about which to complain, regardless of how un-unique the sandwiches actually are. Whether you go with the make your own, one of the specials, or even a veggie. There isn't much I can say about this that would knock it down, as there really isn't anything you can go wrong with unless there is bad service. And the fact that this one is located in such a well-trafficed area is testament to how well and where the enterprise places their locations. Good job, TS. In addition to ThunderCloud having fantastic food, it's a business that backs their community and is exceptionally generous. I'm helping feed a group of kids once a week and sent out 10 emails asking for donations, and Thundercloud was the first to respond. They had a stack gift cards ready by the close of the business day. Walking into their shop with all the yummy smells and fresh ingredients and awesome employees, I can't wait to come back. I actually don't particulary LIKE Thundercloud, but then I don't really like the entire genre. So I'll review the only Thundercloud that I'll actually get a sandwich from: the one on Far West next to Magnolia Cafe. Parking is sort of a pain. You can fit three cars in front, and more in back, although there's a massive 300-year-old live oak in the middle of the parking lot. You can also park at the convenience store across the street, if you can get in & out before they have you towed. The best part about this location is the staff. The restaurant is staffed by kids who may or may not be in college this semester, and are trying to earn a few bucks for books or a new tattoo. They play their slacker music whether fuddy-duddies like me want to listen to it or not, and they don't take out their face piercings or cover their tattoos because it offends my delicate sensitivities. They're going to greet me quickly and politely and serve up mysandwich just the way I ask for it, charge me the right amount, and move on down the line. These kids are what Austin's about, and so is their restaurant. Again, I'm not so fond of the cold-cut sandwich and chips thing, but this is a great joint to grab a quick eat-at-your-desk brown bag. If you're in a particular hurry, you can print off an order form from their website, fax it in, and pick it up at the window, too. And here's a tip from an old but cheap music fan. Swing by here on the way into Zilker for ACL Festival, and get some cold sandwiches for your backpack. Then you can munch on your blanket without missing any music, instead of standing in line for an hour to pay $8 for a slice of cheese pizza. read more

I love this place, kind of an addict! Every sandwhich ive had there has been great! Cali and Austin Clubs being my favorites. Sure the sandwhiches are a bit small and not the standard 1ft sandwhiches everyone is used too now.But they are good really good! I dont know if its that thunder sauce which makes it so good or what but they are extremely addicting. Even there salads are very fresh and delicious! My only real complaint is i wish they has more varience in soups, ive been going here for about 3-4 months now and i dont think the soup of the day has changed once... just the same broccoli and cheese and some like southwest veggiatrian i think which is great.. but would like some more options. Overall i cant complain I love the food and have never had a bad experence there, HIGHLY RECOMMEND read more

It's like crack. I tried to go to the grocery store once and buy similar ingredients and make my own once, after I realized I had gone there 12 times in a month when I was living in Austin. How hard could it be? I mean, it's just a turkey sub , right? Suffice it to say , it didn't hit the spot. Thundercloud is So. freakin. good. Had this while visiting from Indiana. Very friendly staff, bread was tasty , price was good..my only issue is the meat was extremely fatty and I had to spit out several chunks of not tasty fatty meat. Overall I'd go back but ill stick to stuff like the turkey . read more

Yesterday on Sunday, while ordering a sub from the cool folks at Thunder Cloud. We discovered that fresh baked cookies that include peanut butter cookies are kept on a open rack on parchment paper just above the food preparation area for the subs. So, unfortunately this venerable sub shop is not peanut safe for our son Jake. We will miss those tasty subs. read more

First time at Thundercloud subs. They say you never get another chance at a first impression. I've never seen two subs take 20 minutes to make. The girl at the counter was glacially slow. And half way through my sub she asks what kind of cheese I wanted on my meatball and I said 'I ordered a Big Paul'. Started over. So they gave that sub to a homeless person that was standing there. Nothing at all against feeding the poor but the guy got his sub before a paying customer. Not a good business model in my opinion. All told it took us 45 minutes to get our food. The place was dirty as well. How was the food? Does it matter? I can make a steak dinner in 45 minutes. Pass. read more

I haven't been here in years but we stopped in yesterday hoping for find something to satisfy our hunger and we did! The hot Roast Beef sandwich was great. Actually it was way better than I expected. Service was super fast and friendly. My friend had never been here but was delighted to find a decent place to grab a sandwich on the go when working in this area. read more

I LOVE the veggie sub--it's with hummus and wheat bread and THUNDERSAUCE. Make sure you ask for a side of thundersauce and use it to dip your sandwich in! I recently found out I'm allergic to gluten, and since they don't offer gluten-free bread I have had to find other sandwich shops around town, but this place is great if you can eat the wheat stuff! Bonus points for the 19th Annual Turkey Trot this year... hosted by Thundercloud on Thanksgiving!! Update: They are now offering gluten-free bread (a little different tasting every time though haha.... but it is still ok for gluten-free sub bread, and allows us to have our Thundercloud!) read more

5 stars for a sub shop. My favorite is the Texas Tuna. Any of their subs with avocado are great. I also admire how they continue to give back to the Austin community and make a difference through the Turkey Trot or sponsoring local youth sports teams. read more

I can't say enough awesome things about Thundercloud. First of all, it's one of the few Austin originals that has not only been hugely successful over the years but they have also managed to maintain their dignity (and great locations) without selling out to developers and big boxes. The relaxed atmosphere encourages you to pick out a sandwich that sounds tasty to you. Their bread is always fresh - not too soft and not too hard. A big fan favorite is the California Club, with delicious guacamole, turkey, and bacon slices. My personal favorite goes like this: 6 inch turkey on wheat, lettuce, tomato, onion, "Thundersauce" (a delish recipe of oil and vinegar), American cheese, regular mustard (try spicy for an extra kick) and salt & pepper. The prices are great ($5.60 will buy you chips, a drink and a 6" sub) and you'll have enough change left over to pick up a tasty brownie or carrot cake. On a Thursday, it's a great day to pick up the newest Chronicle. read more

This Thundercloud location is the best there is! I work close to other locations but will drive 20 minutes further to go to this store. The people are friendly and super fast. Even though they get you in and out you don't feel like they were rushing you out the door. The food is always fresh and their sandwiches are always made perfectly. Its such a drag going to other locations because you know you aren't going to get a great sandwich or a friendly face behind the counter. So to sum up....the employees (obviously well managed) and the sandwiches at Thundercloud Lake Austin Blvd are the best in town! Go T-Cloud! read more

I absolutely love this place. I usually call in a chicken salad sandwich during work, and it's ready with a friendly face at the window. I have but one complaint....The employee there named Robert. I decided to come in with my girlfriend during lunch the other day and dine in, and Robert was our sandwich maker. From the beginning, it was very clear that Robert had taken some sort of 'medication' that was affecting his ability to do his job. All the while, seeming proud of the fact that he was under the influence by stating "not running on all cylinders today, among other things". He was pale, slurring his words, rambling nonsense, and sweating profusely. He asked each of us 5 times what we would like on our sandwich and even STILL made hers wrong. It took him 15 minutes to complete the whole transaction. Look, I get it, if you want to come into work a little buzzed, so be it. But when you are a grown man that knows better, yet clearly intoxicated, and it is affecting your ability to perform and your level of customer service significantly drops, it is an insult to an otherwise loyal patron, or anyone for that matter. I will continue to call my subs into this location, and hope that I don't have to waste my time with Robert again. read more

Totally agree with the lack of hygiene at this location. Im sure you are all nice people, but if you make a living off of MAKING FOOD then you MUST show up to work in a clean manner and wear proper gloves when handling food. I swear to god if I find one more beard hair in my sandwich.... I guess my main question would be why would anyone think it is ok to show up to work sweaty and with greasy hair?? Like everyone who works there has extremely greasy hair. I know we are all only human, that's why I know when there is a lunch rush you are going to wipe the sweat from your brow, your run your fingers through your insanely greasy hair. But then you make my sandwich??? without gloves?? What gives?! One time a guy there had a cut on his hand. The blood was even mixed with sweat so it was like a light pink color. Im pretty tall, so I can see what's going on behind the counter. I just looked at him- appalled. No bandaid, no wipe, do goddamned gloves. nothing. He thought it would be perfectly ok to make my sandwich with a disgusting left hand. I have never seen another location as gross as this one. Have some self respect if this is your job. I may show up to my work with dirty hair in a bun- but I assure you I am not making people's sandwiches- my job is to work at a desk- far, far away from people's lunches. read more

From work, we order from there at least 2 times a week, mostly out of convenience. Convenience is a funny word to use considering we always pick up and something is missing at least once a week. I'll go with close proximity. They certainly don't miss a charge on a ticket, such as a bag of chips, extra cheese or a drink, but regularly forget to make sure everything is in your bag. Today, I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich. It is ice cold wrapped in tinfoil. The staff is always friendly as forgetful and they are open during normal business hours. i am all over thundercloud subs. if i were incapable of making my own food, these guys would be a significant part of my diet. my particular beef is with the lake austin location. the people there are somewhat...aloof and the sandwiches are significantly smaller than they are elsewhere. they are very chincy with sandwich toppings and the potato salad was mostly pickles and mayo. also the chips and drinks were not self serve. do rich people steal more than poor people? read more

Sandwiches are pretty good overall. The ingredients seem fresh, hummus is nice and garlicky, and the pickles were awesome. The prices are fair for the product, Thundercloud is definitely a step above Subway. I knocked off a star because the kid that made our food didn't use gloves. I recognize that in kitchens practically no one uses gloves, but if you're making the food in front of me at least let me keep hope alive. read more
