I can't remember the name of the guy who helped me, but I believe he had locs and was working the front. His customer service was a 10 out of 10. He was handling multiple customers at once and never missed a beat. Super pleasant, very attentive, and made a great first impression. Since it was my first time, he even recommended how I should order my pizza so I could get two different kinds without having to buy two whole pizzas. That alone made the experience better. The pizzas themselves were a 10 out of 10. Both were amazing. I believe one was something like a meat lovers, and the other had peppers, basil, and a few other toppings. I honestly can't remember exactly what they were called, but it doesn't even matter because they were that good. My only note would be the sauce was a little on the salty side, so I would recommend easing up on the salt. Other than that, everything was great. Tried Thunderbird Pies in Dallas, TX recently and it was just OK for me. We ordered the Italian Beef pizza, and unfortunately it didn't really stand out. The meat was a bit dry and didn't have much flavor, and I wasn't a fan of the horseradish cream sauce on top. It just didn't work for me. The traditional sausage and pepperoni pizza was much better--simple and tasty. We also tried the buffalo wings, which were decent but nothing special. According to my last review it has been three years since we were here which is hard to believe since this is our favorite place for Detroit style pizza. We went on a Saturday evening for dinner. There is still an ice cream parlor to the left of where you order pizza.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In the past we liked their pizza of the month but this time it was Thanksgiving-themed with turkey and cranberry sauce. That did not sound too appetizing so we opted for a straight up pepperoni. The pepperoni are little cups of flavor. The crust is crunchy on the outside edge but light and chewy on the inside. It is perfection. The sauce is light and not acidic at all. We started with a cheese salad, not sure of the formal name, and it comes with lettuce, some cheese, Fresno peppers, tomatoes, and dressing. It was excellent and even the kid liked it. There is a modest selection of tap beers, only 4 or 5, but we found one we liked and it was perfect with the pizza. Service was fast and friendly. I have tried Cane Rosso and thought it was great! I have tried Zoli's and thought the same so when I saw Thunderbird Pies I knew I had to give it a shot and I am so glad I did. Came here late on a Sunday about 45 minutes before closing. The restaurant was completely empty and I ordered a large Luka Brassi for dine-in. We waited for about 25-30min before the cashier came up to us and let us know that they had forgotten to put our order in and were just starting to make the pizza now. They offered us free soft drinks while we waited which was very kind. He was very apologetic! Our food ended up coming out about five minutes after close but they were very kind and did not make us feel rushed as we ate. Got a little busier as we were there, but lunch time seems fairly safe from extended waits Quite a few of their options sounded interesting, but we ended up going for the supa fly and frico suave I was super impressed with both pies! They absolutely nailed the balance of fluffy bread with a deliciously crunchy crust coated in caramelized cheese. This spot is now my standard along with lions tigers and squares in terms of Detroit style I was torn between supa fly and the Connie, usually I'd err on the traditional side for a first visit, but the whipped ricotta and honey on the supa fly pulled me. The combination worked really well, though I do think hot honey could've done the trick instead of both honey and peppers. I'll probably give the Connie a try next time since both of ours we're white pies The frico suave was super cheesy which worked really nice with the garlic and pepper. We added mushrooms and I do recommend putting a more substantial topping with that pie, otherwise it comes across more as a garlic bread than a pizza. I am a cheesesteak enthusiast. I have traveled to Philadelphia solely for the purpose of eating cheesesteaks but I'll try out the local version just about anywhere else I go in this country. I am an active member of multiple cheesesteak groups on social media and I have looked at, discussed, and argued about cheesesteaks more than any other singular food item over the last few years. I'm also a big fan of the Cane Rosso family of restaurants and regularly visit Thunderbird Pies so I was ecstatic when I started seeing ads online for their cheesesteak Wednesdays. I went the first week they were available and ordered one with whiz and Cooper sharp and then tried it out again yesterday with just the Cooper sharp. Both sandwiches came with the fried onions and long hots that are standard with an order. The Roll: The seeded hoagie roll is exactly what I want with a crusty exterior and chewy inside that's similar to what I would expect to be served in the city of brotherly love. I would compare it to the Liscio's seeded rolls I've had up there and it is far and away the best roll I've had in the DFW area on a cheesesteak. While many people may prefer a softer unseeded Amoroso style of roll that majority of cheesesteak vendors here offer; IMO you need a firm roll to hold up to heftiness of a modern cheesesteak. Even when I ate the second half of a sandwich the next day the roll still didn't get soggy. The Meat: The menu says it has 10oz of ribeye but the meat seems pretty light compared to other cheesesteaks I've had. Angelo's in Philadelphia also nominally uses 10oz per cheesesteak but look at any pictures of the steaks they're putting out and the rolls are stuffed with meat from end to end and it's only $17 before tax. For a $20 sandwich I feel like there should be more meat in there. While we're on the subject of the meat the ribeye should be shaved thinner IMO. Both sandwiches I tried had thick chunks of meat throughout instead of the thinly chopped ribbons of steak that are most common in today's popular cheesesteaks. The thicker pieces do not cook as evenly and there were larger pieces with sides that were burned to a hard crisp. When the meat is too chunky it also tends to tumble out of the bread easier and no one likes having to put meat back into the sandwich after it fell off. When the meat is thin enough the cheese helps act like a glue to keep everything congealed together inside the bread. The Cheese: The amount of cheese on the sandwich was also lacking IMO. The first one I tried with the cheese whiz added helped out but both times I found myself searching hard trying to find the Cooper sharp in my sandwich. While I applaud them for not just placing cheese on top of a pile of meat on the grill and then scooping it into the roll without mixing it in first; there should be a proportional amount of cheese to the meat in every bite. You could barely taste the signature tangy flavor of the Cooper sharp cheese that makes it beloved by cheesesteak fans across this country. And while I think some shops are putting on too much cheese in Philadelphia these days, the cheesesteak at Thunderbird can definitely stand to add another slice or two. The Long Hots: The first sandwich I tried only had two small pieces of pepper on it that looked more like a cherry pepper than any long hot I've had before. I was pretty disappointed by that. The second cheesesteak did have larger peppers that are more what I'm akin to but they were on the bottom of the roll which is not the most common way I've had them. Usually the long hots come on the side or on top of the sandwich but the flavor was there. In the online ad they show the long hots being diced and mixed into the meat but I have not seen that in either sandwich I was served. Overall the sandwich is an excellent new cheesesteak option for the DFW area that is made similar to some of the most popular versions being served in Philadelphia these days but there is definitely room for some improvement in the execution. read more

My mother loved our leftover pizza so much that she wants us to pick up extras for her to freeze next time we visit. I wonder if take and bake would be possible in the future? I would be all over that....however, I could probably not do those pies justice! We ordered the Straight Veg pie and the Kale B.S. salad. That toasted cheese and crust on the pizza and just the entire texture of the pie was so very sinfully delicous. I could seriously have dreams about it. I have to say though, that the kale and brussels sprouts salad was about the best of it's kind that I have ever had. Tons of parmesan, Marcona almonds, nice italian vinaigrette and the freshly chopped kale and brussels......Christopher Walken would say wow wow wow! I encourage you to look up the history of Detroit style pizza and some of the names of the pizzas will make sense; such as Connie and Drip Pan. Such a cool way to remember historical roots of the food we eat. I also tried the Pinot Freezio drink. It is a combination of Pinot Grigio wine and cucumber lemonade that is prepared and dispensed from a frozen drink machine. The staff poured a little into a shot glass and handed it to me. I thought, "Man that's a really small drink!" Silly me! I did not realize he was letting me have a sample. Whew! Well I loved it and enjoyed a larger portion with my meal. I'm just gonna come correct on this review and pull no punches. This is the best Detroit style pizza not just in Texas, but in any state in the Union, including Michigan. I'm from the Detroit area and I've had all the local favorites: Buddy's, Niki's, and Loui's. They're all really good. They're not this good, though. Thunderbird Pies makes my favorite pizza on this planet, and I've had 'em all over the world! Seriously, the world. Get the Thunder Mifflin (add ricotta and pesto) and the Honey Bastard (nothing to change). Both are totally top drawer (TTD) and have no equal. I've never had anything less than the most consistently great pizzas from them, whether I'm eating there or at home. I serve Thunderbird Pies to guests who visit us, and they are absolutely run over by this pizza each time. It's a sure thing. Pro tips: If you order to go, throw these pies in the oven once more at 400, wait for the cheese to start bubbling slightly again, and you're good to go. Never hurts to put some added crisp on top. If you like some extra flavor, sprinkle on some parmesan and dip in ranch. You can also apply Momofuku's Chili Crunch for heat. Or you can leave as is. Can't go wrong any way. We went to Thunderbird Pies today for lunch (Saturday) and it was fantastic! We like Cane Rossa and Zoli's and since it is the same owner, we though we would give it a try. I wanted to go someplace casual where I could wear tights, and no makeup. This fit the bill. You order at the counter and they bring your order to the table. Plus, only 5 minutes from our house. We got "The Artichokes" for an App and "The Drip Pan Pizza" for a main. The artichokes were so yummy. Crispy little pieces of artichokes w/ a parmesan batter and an underlying taste of lemon. It came with an aioli that was delish. Tart, a tiny bit of spice and mayo based. Wish I could figure out that recipe because I would use it from now on as a dip for any number of things. The pizza was SO GOOD. We are demanding eaters, and sometimes walk away from a restaurant thinking "meh". But, this pizza hit on every level. Firstly, it was a bargain! It is a thick pizza with loads of wonderful toppings. I could only eat half a piece. The sauce was so yummy. It really tasted like fresh tomatoes, not an overly cooked sauce. The toppings were amazing. Mushroom, sausage, soppressata, caramelized onion and roasted peppers. All were the best version of that ingredient they could be! All in all - very good pizza! Definitely has the Detroit style pizza appeal. Nice cheese pull, sweat sauce, and caramelized crust. If you're a fan of "Jets Pizza" or "Blue Pan" this is definitely a place to try! The thickness or lack there of thickness of the crust is the only reason why I give this a 4. Go try em! read more

Sigh. Such high hopes. Bad customer service led to me getting a cold pizza. Im being generous with a 3/5. I arrived 5 minutes before the time to pick up my pies. Girl at the counter said it would be 10 more minutes. Waited for 10 and asked again. They said it would be 10 more minutes. Waited. Asked again and the lady started looking around and my pies had been on the counter the whole time. Sitting out for at least 26 minutes. I didn't see them pull any pies during the 20 minutes I waited so who knows how long my pies were actually on the counter before I arrived. I was home just 5 minutes later to cold soggy pizza. Omg you guys. Idk what kind of witchcraft they got goin on at this place, but this is the ABSOLUTE BEST gluten "free" pizza I've ever had. Hell, it might even be some of the best pizza I've ever had, period. SO fresh and flavorful & chewy & cheesy & delicious. They call it "gluten friendly" dough. I am not celiac, so I don't have to be super careful about trace cross contamination. I do have a gluten intolerance due to autoimmune issues, and don't eat anything with wheat ingredients. I've been gluten free since 2017, and have had my fair share of gf pizza since then. Lots of terrible ones. A few that were better. But NONE like this. It is fluffy and light and thick and just like REAL gluten filled pizza. If I didn't know it was GF I'd NEVER be able to tell. I ordered the Straight Veg, and added Italian sausage. The veggies were so fresh and packed with flavor. I can't wait to try all of the other flavors! Thunderbird, take all my money please. Please don't ever go away. I need you in my life! read more
