Meh. I wanted to love it. We've waited a long time, driving by and always noting we had to try it. Tonight was the night. First, it's very loud. The seating, very pub-like, was not what we expected. Not a bad thing, but not much of a dinner thing. We sat at the bar.
We were greeted quickly and given menus. Then the wait began. Some (obvious) regulars came to the walk-up spot next to where we were seated (waiting for our drink order to be taken). They had quite a loud, animated, amiable conversation while they (and we) waited. The bartender then took *their* order, while we continued to wait. Another couple of servers looked at us, but said nothing. Finally, the bartender said, "Do you know what you want for drinks?" "Yeah. And food," my wife replied. I ordered poutine and we both ordered burgers. My wife's side was the squash, mine was the kale & coos coos salad. For beer, I ordered a Hobbs Farmhouse Saison. It was okay, a little below what I had expected (I'm pretty familiar with their beers).
The poutine came out quickly and was good. When looking at the menu, I had commented to my wife that fries were not an option with the burger, and she said, "They probably don't have a fryolater." I thought she was probably right. A short way into the poutine, we both realized they DO have a fryolater, and thought it odd that they don't offer fries as a side with the burger (and the fries are terrific).
The burgers came out, but they had switched which burger went with which side. No biggy, we just switched them ourselves. Burgers came out quickly (perhaps a shade too quickly since I was still working on the app). They were cooked to order, but there was some flavor -- not sure if it was the cheese, the onions, or the bun -- that was just... off. Tasted like earth, or soap, I still can't decide which. I freely admit I'm not a raw-foods kind of guy, and they're definitely leaning that way, so it might be to your liking. I wished I'd ordered something else. It wasn't bad, just off. Not anything that I would send back but nothing I'd order a second time. So far so goodish.
Now comes the trouble. The service was, well... very millennial -- which is to say, we were pretty much ignored once we got the obligatory check-in. I would have ordered a second beer had anyone cared enough to ask -- they didn't. By the time anyone did, we were ready for the check and I asked for my growler to be filled. Now, everyplace I've ever been will quickly spritz your growler before filling it (some places will actually replace it if the bottle is too warm). That did not happen. One guy took the order, another filled the growler, but just grabbed it and filled it. I *hope* it was relatively clean. It's been in the car waiting for the chance I was passing by and stopped in. Once filled, most places will clean the exterior with water and wipe it down. It was wiped, with a dank bar rag. When I picked it up to leave it nearly slipped out of my hand. I set it on my leg so as not to get the interior of the car sticky, and my pant-leg is actually wet as I type. And sticky. As we left, my wife commented, "It's not horrid, so I wouldn't blast them in your review... but... maybe this is what we have to get used to with the service industry from this generation." That pretty much sums the place up. We won't be back for dinner, not because of the food, but because of the sub-par service and VERY loud atmosphere. Given the concerns about sanitation, I'm not sure I'll be drinking the beer anymore, either. Quite a disappointment, really. I gave three stars, but 2.5 is closer to where my heart is. read more
