The place needs a revamp, ambiance is old and needs help. But I guess for a tavern this is the way it goes. I'm not sure what happened to the tavern. I have been a regular here for over a year at this point. Not only did they change their menu, but the food has become really horrible. We waited over an hour for our food. It was not busy, and two of our dishes came back blackened and burnt to the point where no one could eat them. In addition, the waitress was so inattentive and acted put out. She barely glanced our way, and every time we asked her for something she barely acknowledged us. I was a customer today... I never do reviews and never do this kind of thing BUT tonight I am doing it... Only good thing about here was the Mozzarella Bites... Our waitress was great.. food was not... I paid $30 for the prime surf & turf which is a lot for an entree.. usually when you have something that expensive it really hits the spot... I was VERY surprised with how the meat turned out.. one slice was rare, next slice was medium rare, next slice was medium, and the last 2 slices well... not only was the meat not cooked properly but the meat was so hard.. it also had a grey look to it.. I ate one small bite and was like I'm not getting sick from this.. the shrimp was OK at best.. The waitress never asked how anything turned out so I wasn't able to bring it up.. until we were about to leave and I was like they need to know how bad this is.. so I told the waitress that I know it's not her fault but the meat was soooo bad... like it didn't taste right.. and she apologized and I'm honestly surprised that she didn't get her manager.. Moved to Hampton for a winter rental and have had my eye on the 401 for awhile. So my wife & I decided to give it a try. We really like the decor and atmosphere which I describe as rustic and relaxed. Plenty of bar space with two separate lounge areas. The bartender was pleasant and punctual and our drinks were good . For food I went with the Greek Flatbread and my wife chose the Haddock Trio, both were very good other than I would do without the balsamic drizzle on the Greek Flatbread....that's just me. This is only my 1st visit and the food and drinks were good but I feel a place like this could take it up a notch in both areas. I do recommend the 401 for an enjoyable time, my rating being 3-1/2 stars for now. Enjoy! read more

Went in for lunch last weekend and what a giant disappointment. My previous reviews boast about 401 having the best salad in the state with their buffalo cobb salad. Those are just memories from the distant past now because the current offering of the buffalo cobb is an embarrassment compared to its former glory. For 19$ you get a salad that is clearly prepared by someone that doesnt like eating or MAKING salads. The onions and tomatoes appeared to be pulled from the nacho topping bins. The chicken portion is roughly 50% of the previous salads i have reviewed and given 5 stars. Im pretty sure the bacon is mo longer actual bacon and more like bacos now. I even got chicken gristle in my 5 measly strips of chicken. Well honestly 401 is lucky I even give them a 2, and thats only because the service was decent by the bartender giving pepsi refills. I was told when i sat down that the menu is changing and some dishes on the menu werent available. We all know that new menus typically coincide with price hikes and sometimes pricier ingredients get replaced for inferior substitutes. The worst part is my GF really wanted to go to Smuttynose for their massive chicken fingers but I wanted the giant Buffalo cobb from my memory that ive had before at 401. Not only did the food suck but i actually chose 401 instead of my GFs preferred Smuttynose so that's an extra kick in the pants!! The restaurant was a ghost town and honestly has the feel of a sinking ship. Look over my reviews if you think i am bias or a dink because I generally give very positive reviews of my experiences. However 401 has fallen so far that I can not recommend anyone visit anymore. The prices are going up and the quality & portions have nosedived off a cliff, but all good things come to an end. read more

To make a long story short, I really thought the onion rings on the menu looked so good. I paid an extra $10 for them because they told me there are no substitutions on sides of FF except sweet potato fries and I don't like sweet potato anything. I feel that I wasted my money because most of the onion rings were just battered onion skin. Yuck! The batter was falling off as you picked one up. To boot the person who took my order was short and unfriendly. We will not order from here again and when we have company we will steer clear of this place too bad. My wife, mother in law and myself went here on a dreary, rainy Sunday. It was nice and cozy, we sat in the pub area. We each had one of the locally crafted beers, all very good. So between us, we had seafood chowder, French onion soup for appetizers. For the main entree, my mother in law and I had the chicken quesadillas and my wife had the BLT chicken tacos. The food was fresh, cooked to perfection and was quite amazed at the presentation for pub fare.(see photos). The staff were very friendly and attentive also. Came here on a Friday night few weeks ago. Place was empty and yet we were sat next to the only other 2 parties there. One server for the 3 of us and no one else yet it would take them 10-15 minutes to come to us for drinks, then food, then no coming back for us to order more drinks, so we waited and waited then just paid bill and left. Went for a second visit after a fantastic first to try the Friday prime rib special. The 16 Oz. cut didn't seem like prime rib. The texture was a dense tight grain and not soft or tender at all. It was more like an eye of the round feel and difficult to chew. There was very little fat and no marbling. It in no way looked like a slice of prime rib. The size and shape was unlike any other prime rib I've been served, about half the size but over twice as thick. The flavor however was excellent which goes along with our first visit's experience of other meals. Delicious and abundant sides accompanied the meat. The service was and is outstanding both visits so it's obvious the management hires the best or has the best training. 5 for flavor 5 for service 1 for the meat itself We will be going back as this will be one of our "regulars". I've always thought it pretentious when places have the cuts of meat on display to choose but at $32 I wish I got to see what they served before I ordered it. I am kicking myself for not sending the meal back and got one of their other great meals instead. Next up is their puff pastry chicken pie. I highly recommend the 401 Tavern. read more

So I got a Groupon deal and decided to go for a meal. I live locally. I am usually not one to leave a bad review but...I ordered the Reuben sandwich with a side of tots. I ask that the tots be "crispy." The Reuben was mediocre, barely any sauerkraut. The tater tots were burnt to a crisp, inedible. The bartender "John" did not check in until I was on my last two bites of sandwich ( it was not particularly busy, handful of people at the bar and maybe two tables) he did offer to replace the tots but I was finishing by that time. So I ask d if he was going to discount for the burnt tots and he got really nasty, saying "I offered to get you more..." I replied again that I was finishing my meal so it was too late. Then he walked away muttering "unkind comments" really? Overall, it was a very unpleasant meal, mostly due to inattentive John and inappropriate mutterings. read more

The former Widow Fletcher's Tavern (aka Widow's) is now under new ownership and reopened as The 401 Tavern, which is named after the address of 401 Lafayette Road. This bar & grill is housed in an old house from colonial times in Hampton Village. The atmosphere inside is that of an old style English pub with old wooden floors, dark stained wood trim and old framed pictures/posters on the walls. The pub style menu offers some appetizing food at reasonable prices including soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, entrees (seafood, steak, chicken, bangers & mash, shepherd's pie, prime rib), half pint meals (kids 10 & under), and desserts. Daily specials offered. The Ploughman's Lunch ($10) is on the menu! Besides the beer, several signature mixed drinks ($8) are served here such as: Passion of the 401: Skyy Passion Fruit Vodka & Parrot Bay Passion Fruit Rum w/ OJ, Grapefruit, Pineapple, Cranberry & Sprite. Desi's Island Delight: Cruzan Mango Rum, Skyy Pineapple Vodka, Bols Blue Curacao & Pineapple. I dropped in here for lunch. For lunch, I went with the Old Fashion Tuna Melt ($6) served with choice of potato chips, potato salad, mashed, O'Brien potatoes, cole slaw, or cottage cheese. I chose the O'Brien potatoes, which are baked potato slices with diced onions, peppers, & seasonings. I heard several 80s dance tunes over the speakers while watching the Sox on mute while I waited for the food to come out (20 minutes). The Tuna Melt was a big sandwich overstuffed with warm tuna salad with celery, cheddar cheese, sliced tomato, bacon on toasted marbled rye. The sandwich was tasty and filling. The baked O'Brien potatoes were a great accompaniment to the sandwich. The service from my waitress (Cheri) was friendly and attentive and several ice water refills in the small goblet glass were given. Overall, a good lunch at a fair price served at a relaxed pace. She threw out that it was Prime Rib night after every one else already ordered. So I said I try it. Scallops and bacon never came. Had to ask someone else and was told they were out. Danielle is a star! Her warm personality enhanced the evening with her hospitable ways. My girlfriend ordered the spinach artichoke dip and had the prime rib for her entree and I ordered the zucchini linguine. The food was exceptional! My meal was light enough that I didn't feel like had a big meal but the portion was a good size and very filling without the guilt of a big meal. We will be back! Love the atmosphere so much! 2 cool bar areas and awesome wine loft. I just wish the good followed suit. The menu looks so intriguing with its gluten-free options. But I've never had food loaded with so much salt. And I love salt. The buffalo wings looked perfectly crispy. But they were the saltiest buffalo wings I've ever had. It was odd and my son couldn't eat them. I got the herb chicken and the only herb I tasted was an entire shaker of salt. And the burger looked delicious but had no flavor. I've bought a groupon for the 401 Tavern. I have been here in the past & couldn't remembered how the food was. So I thought I would venture up there, and check out the scene once more. Visited here last Sunday 5/5/22, sat outside on the deck. The waitress was friendly, great with suggestions, and knowledgeable with menu items. The place is busy on a Friday/Saturday evening, but it is worth the wait. The Nachos are great starter, along with the Honey-Garlic & Buffalo wings. I like the Caprese Salad with grilled chicken, and bacon wrapped scallops. The Chicken BLT tacos are great, but for some reason only come with a pickle and no other side. The Buffalo Chicken Cobb Salad is great if you're looking to eat light. I would highly recommend the 401 Tavern and will be back to try more items on the menu.
