    Fabulous Fish and Chips

We drove in late as we traveled to Portland. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, just like Cheers. We both had the fried fish and chips - some of the best we've ever eaten!! Do yourself a favor and stop by if you can.

I was quite impressed with this establishment! It is a small, unassuming pub with limited seating inside. The food served is of a very high quality. The service was great. However, it was a bit slow. The lady running the bar is the same lady who takes orders from the tables, so service is a little less speedy. However, this is consistent with the style of what a pub is, which is a little more self-service in nature. Just be a bit more patient with the speed of service. Every single morsel of food that I had was spot on. There's a few ways that you can enjoy this place. They offer a selection of small bites and large bites as appetizers. You can order a few of those and share them tapas style for your group. If you're going to do this, I recommend going for the large bites. I found the large bites to be shareable for up to three people. I did it this way for my party of three, and it worked perfectly. The bruschetta that I had was very well done. This was impressive, considering that this isn't an Italian restaurant. The bread was well toasted and the toppings were great. I tried their Dwyer's Famous Chicken and it also was great. I had them as tenders. The breading was crispy and well seasoned, and a great dipping sauce was also provided on the side. You can have them toss the tenders in the sauce if your choice or serve it on the side. It looks like they did both for me. Delicious! I also ordered their crab cakes with fried green tomatoes, which were some of the best crab cakes that I'd ever had! The crab meat was tender and flavorful, and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Very high end fare. Spot on! Lastly, we ordered some nachos as well with pulled pork which were also delicious. Nice, hearty portion of tender pork with a variety of condiments. Again, fabulous!! There also is ample selection of creative craft cocktails and beers to accompany your meal. I had their "gingin", a concoction that includes gin and ginger liqueur. Delicious! The drinks will not disappoint. There's two reasons that I haven't gone for five stars. The first is that the service was slightly slow. The other is that they were out of some soups that were on the menu, as well as some salmon bites that were on the menu. We requested both and were forced to change our order because they were out of both things. Overall, however, it is a truly great restaurant. The service is friendly and the food is fairly priced and of incredibly high quality. I highly recommend this place!!

Consistently great food and drinks! Fun casual vibe. The food here is fantastic. Highly recommend the scallops. I will try to find a picture of them. Noel makes great craft cocktails and they typically have special drinks for holidays. Depending on how hungry I am, I'll either get a side salad and a taco or appetizer, or a full size entree. Definitely a Portsmouth staple.

It wasn't my preferred type of beer, but I found it tasty and refreshing. The next morning at breakfast at a restaurant in town, there were small signs on the table for their beers. So that afternoon, I went to Liar's Bench for lunch. I appreciate the messages the universe had sent me. Apart from a challenge getting parking at lunchtime, with several spots in the lot reserved for nearby Murray's Plumbing, there's much to like about Liar's Bench (and that's no lie). The beer selection is varied enough that I was able to get a very satisfying flight. My local friend had suggested I order whatever was the chef's special of the day (which today was a specialty burger), but we instead opted for the BBQ platter for 2, with a large amount of pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, and Texas toast. We sat at the bar and had great service and conversation. I can see why this is a popular lunch destination. Another bonus for me is that Liar's Bench is the closest brewery to a hotel at which I often stay when I'm in Portsmouth, making this a new destination for me when I'm in the area.

This quaint gastropub doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside, this seems like a place where locals are regulars and tourists are happy to get a table at this "no reservations" joint. It's dark inside (no photos) and a little cramped. The bartenders are serving double duty mixing and pouring drinks while also playing DJ and spinning vinyl records. And it felt like everyone inside was exactly where they wanted to be at the moment...enjoying each other's company and sharing drinks and food. The menu is about the size you would expect from a small kitchen - a fair number of appetizer dishes meant for sharing, and a handful of entrees, ranging from casual to a bit more refined. The grilled cheese and tomato soup ($19) was made with a hearty artisan bread that hit the spot on a chilly evening. Similarly, the coq au vin ($26) was classic comfort food, with perfectly cooked smashed fingerling potatoes surrounded by a rich, decadent reduction sauce smothering meaty mushrooms and soft pearl onions. Note, the coq au vin did take a long time to prepare, so not the dish to order if you're in a hurry. A couple of not-too-sweet lemon ricotta donuts (with chocolate sauce) was a great way to end the meal.

They just don't compare to back home. The clam linguine was seasoned perfectly. It was quite filling. We ended with the Apple Olive Oil cake with maple ice cream. The cake itself was quite dense and dry. The ice cream helped. I would not order this dessert again. Service was quite SLOWWWW, and for no reason as they weren't very busy while we were there. There were long gaps between courses and then once we were finished we kind of just sat there for a while. The food was worth it but something is not running efficiently and could be improved. They also deserve a lot of credit for being one of the first if not the first in the state to jump on the non-alcoholic train for beers. This has expanded to basically be as varied in style as their usual beers now. I actually enjoyed their NA Mexican Lager and it was delicious and would be a great option for those looking for NA beers. My wife grabbed their NA seltzer and enjoyed it as well. Since that expansion they have also moved into adaptogen beverages as well as CBD/THC drinks too. They keep expanding their portfolio while also doing what they already do so well! Also for non beer drinkers they did have some bourbon and other spirits available as well. Really great options for all who show up! They don't offer food themselves besides some free popcorn, which was seasoned perfectly! Although if feeling like more food swing in next door to Weathervine and grab some food before to pair with your drink.
