Portmouth's hidden gem. It looks like a nothing special on the outside, and you might be tempted to pass it by. Don't! The food and service are both consistently EXCELLENT! We come here when we are in town for a show. Bonus points for having outdoor seating and loving on our new puppy, Bonnie, last weekend.

    Fabulous Fish and Chips

We drove in late as we traveled to Portland. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, just like Cheers. We both had the fried fish and chips - some of the best we've ever eaten!! Do yourself a favor and stop by if you can.

I was quite impressed with this establishment! It is a small, unassuming pub with limited seating inside. The food served is of a very high quality. The service was great. However, it was a bit slow. The lady running the bar is the same lady who takes orders from the tables, so service is a little less speedy. However, this is consistent with the style of what a pub is, which is a little more self-service in nature. Just be a bit more patient with the speed of service. Every single morsel of food that I had was spot on. There's a few ways that you can enjoy this place. They offer a selection of small bites and large bites as appetizers. You can order a few of those and share them tapas style for your group. If you're going to do this, I recommend going for the large bites. I found the large bites to be shareable for up to three people. I did it this way for my party of three, and it worked perfectly. The bruschetta that I had was very well done. This was impressive, considering that this isn't an Italian restaurant. The bread was well toasted and the toppings were great. I tried their Dwyer's Famous Chicken and it also was great. I had them as tenders. The breading was crispy and well seasoned, and a great dipping sauce was also provided on the side. You can have them toss the tenders in the sauce if your choice or serve it on the side. It looks like they did both for me. Delicious! I also ordered their crab cakes with fried green tomatoes, which were some of the best crab cakes that I'd ever had! The crab meat was tender and flavorful, and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Very high end fare. Spot on! Lastly, we ordered some nachos as well with pulled pork which were also delicious. Nice, hearty portion of tender pork with a variety of condiments. Again, fabulous!! There also is ample selection of creative craft cocktails and beers to accompany your meal. I had their "gingin", a concoction that includes gin and ginger liqueur. Delicious! The drinks will not disappoint. There's two reasons that I haven't gone for five stars. The first is that the service was slightly slow. The other is that they were out of some soups that were on the menu, as well as some salmon bites that were on the menu. We requested both and were forced to change our order because they were out of both things. Overall, however, it is a truly great restaurant. The service is friendly and the food is fairly priced and of incredibly high quality. I highly recommend this place!!

It was good, as expected for bar food but more upscale bar food. I had a really perfectly cooked burger, was on point. Good service.

Bread seemed stale, the meat was chewy, and the dipping jus was tiny. The best part was the tater tots, that clearly came out of a frozen bag. Drinks: Outstanding beer selection. 119 different beers available! Service: Generally very slow. The place wasn't super full but I had to get the bartenders attention to get anything. I didn't get service a single time without having to flag someone down. Value: Beers were decent price, but $21 for that sandwich was egregious. Atmosphere: The bar area was huge with tons of TV options. There were also lots of tables and a really nice outdoor area.

It wasn't my preferred type of beer, but I found it tasty and refreshing. The next morning at breakfast at a restaurant in town, there were small signs on the table for their beers. So that afternoon, I went to Liar's Bench for lunch. I appreciate the messages the universe had sent me. Apart from a challenge getting parking at lunchtime, with several spots in the lot reserved for nearby Murray's Plumbing, there's much to like about Liar's Bench (and that's no lie). The beer selection is varied enough that I was able to get a very satisfying flight. My local friend had suggested I order whatever was the chef's special of the day (which today was a specialty burger), but we instead opted for the BBQ platter for 2, with a large amount of pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, and Texas toast. We sat at the bar and had great service and conversation. I can see why this is a popular lunch destination. Another bonus for me is that Liar's Bench is the closest brewery to a hotel at which I often stay when I'm in Portsmouth, making this a new destination for me when I'm in the area.

We sat at the bar and were handed menu's and our drink order taken. The bartender was friendly and pleasant. She clearly knew the other occupants of the bar as they discussed their families, co-workers and local news. She wasn't quite as verbose with us, but why would she? We had more than enough time to make our selections, and even though we weren't in a hurry, it did feel like a long time. Still, the longer we stay, the more we drink. Right? So that works for tips. ;D She did eventually come over to take our food order between chatting, refilling drinks, welcoming more locals and taking care of bar set-up duties. So she was busy. This is a bar more than a restaurant, and the food was good. There seems to be one person on the bar and one in the kitchen. At least at lunch time. Our food came out at the same time, was warm and well prepared. The bartender put things we may need on the bar top near us: ketchup, forks, etc. and left us to it. She did check on refills during our visit. There is a small restroom opposite the bar that was clean. The ambiance here is neighborhood bar where you come to drink and spend time with your neighbors. Friendly. Not really a 'family' atmosphere. Especially with some of the language. Just FYI. It's a fair sized space and I suspect would be busy on a weekend evening. Definitely a lively spot.

And it felt like everyone inside was exactly where they wanted to be at the moment...enjoying each other's company and sharing drinks and food. The menu is about the size you would expect from a small kitchen - a fair number of appetizer dishes meant for sharing, and a handful of entrees, ranging from casual to a bit more refined. The grilled cheese and tomato soup ($19) was made with a hearty artisan bread that hit the spot on a chilly evening.
