They also sell local reusable bags with really cute doodles, which I loved! They're super responsive on Instagram too. I actually had a manufacturing issue with one of the bags I bought (totally not their fault), and they were so nice about it and replaced it for me with no hassle at all. I really appreciated how easy they made the whole thing. Excellent customer service! I'll definitely be back next time. 100% recommend stopping by Sun Chong Grocery!

I've been coming here for years to get my "ancient Chinese secret" loquat syrup which I take to soothe my throat when I'm sick and to buy lychee! Lychee already packed in bags for you so you don't have to pay for the branches in weight like other places AND if you order online, they can even run it out to your car if you want. I'm in a wheelchair now, so I can no longer walk around and explore the store so I was able to get lychee at their pop up at Ala Moana. 8 years ago, my son really wanted to try mangosteen and we found it at Sun Chong! The also have the ingredients people are looking for like white or red lihing powder and lemon peel. They also have all kinds of gummy candy and lihing lemon peel gummies. As well as your assorted Chinese dried things and ones hanging outside that I have no idea what it is. Which reminds me , I should look up recipes that use them

Grocery shopping in Chinatown, Honolulu, Hawai'i…read more.. My sister asked me to get green onions, Chinese parsley, and choong choi (preserved vegetable) for the jook (congee) that she was cooking for Christmas Eve. I accepted the challenge. Luckily, I found free street parking on King Street, right in front of Xin Wang Market. It was relatively neat and clean! I took a look around and found the Chinese parsley and green onion. I asked staff for the choong choi. They thought that I meant bok choi and showed me a package of fresh vegetable. I said (in English) that it's not that, but the preserved vegetable, rolled up in a ball. LOL - they were speaking Chinese to each other and told me that they don't have it. Okay... I just paid cash and went to the next store. I think I got a good deal of the green onion and Chinese parsley? $3.50 for both!

#ThankYouThursday…read more Xin Wang Market is the first business I thought of to thank. I've been coming here for so many years ever since it opened. I'm always taken care of when I come here. The owners are always friendly and nice, and I always have a good experience and get what we I need and want. Of course during this pandemic, it's safer to stay home as much as possible, but you do need to get out once in a while to replenish the kitchen. I try to buy most of the things I need from here to support them. Coming to shop here did bring back some normalcy as opposed to eating the same fruit and vegetables from the Costco bulk size bags, so I'm grateful and thankful they've stayed open as much as they could during the peak times of the pandemic because it's an essential business. A lot of risk was taken during the early months as everyone just wore those blue disposable masks and some did not even wear masks at all. At least now, you have better masks, face shields, and have time to build dividers between the customers. Stay strong. Stay safe. Support local!

Sometimes it takes someone from outside to point out something great in your neighborhood. Yeeps…read moreJudy C & Donna O have recently reviewed Hana Market on McCully St. I'm always on the lookout for another neighborhood joint with good local comfort food, so I bookmarked it on the TDL to check out. Their directions were spot on. Hana Market is in the same building complex as Camelia Buffet and one of the dive shops I use. Park in their lot that butts against McCully and Algaroba. Their entrance fronts McCully, the sign is small and nondescript. I had to look for it. Hana is the type of neighborhood convenience store that sells smokes, liquor, canned/bottled drinks, sundry items, and in this case ono food. A one woman operation, the owner does everything- takes the order, cooks, and handles the payment. Somehow she makes everything works and your wait isn't too long. The menu is Korean-oriented, but includes local items like loco moco, fried noodles, corned beef and cabbage, and chili rice with hotdog. In the morning there are bento meals to grab and go. Her "Big Breakfast" of two meats, eggs, and rice for $4.99 is available all day. I wanted a couple of small proteins to go with some of the leftovers I was eating through, so I made an order for fried mandoo and spicy fried chicken. After a bit of a wait, my order was ready. She mostly takes cash, but will process a credit card for a transaction over $10. When I got home, I found something was lost in translation- instead of spicy fried chicken, I got a spicy chicken bento. It still worked and I enjoyed the meal, but now I know to check my order before I leave. I'm pretty stoked to have another neighborhood place within walking distance or on the way to/from home that serves good grinds. Can't wait until I try one of the Big Breakfasts! Until I get more accustomed to the waiting time I think I'll venture to Hana Market when I'm not in a rush, and not say on the way to work. Lunch/Dinner and weekends no problems! Please help support local mom-and-pop businesses! Definitely will repeat and recommend!

Hole in the wall convenience store with Big Breakfast for $6.59 in Honolulu, Hawaii…read more.. I saw my friends (Ward, Dan, Fran, and Donna) post photos of yummy food, but maybe I waited too long to check out Hana Market. I parked in the free parking lot for McCully Buffet and walked around the corner to the store. I didn't see any bentos... I just ordered a Big Breakfast with 2 of the 4 meats. I chose bacon and Portuguese sausage. I guess the eggs just come over easy and on a bed of white rice. I also ordered a tofu spinach salad. When I got home, I put the spinach in a bowl and uncovered the tofu. I dipped a spinach leaf into the sauce, which was too spicy for me. I'll take it to my mom's house later. I didn't see any menu for this shop. I believe that the picture menu refers to Choi's Garden. The phone number is on the poster. Catering is available. The shop looks a bit cluttered and not very organized. Toothpaste is next to canned goods, for example. The door is left open for fresh air. The owner/cashier/cook is an older Asian woman. She is a hard worker and didn't get flustered when another customer came in. I told her she can take care of the other person first - since she was waiting while my meal was being prepped. However, she rang us both up efficiently!

I walked through all the aisles and happily found things that I needed to restock for my pantry. I even found items I didn't need! lol. In the refrigerator you will find Mrs Cheng's soybean milk you can find in stores. However, the best item is the fresh tofu that you usually get at a restaurant that Mrs Cheng's company makes. It comes in fresh Monday and Friday's. It also comes with a ginger sweetener that you can add a little or a lot to your tofu. My parents love it and it's a refreshing treat instead of too sugary sweets. They have so many items to choose from and the owners are kind and help you. I was looking for a peanut sauce base and spicy sauce for noodles. They showed me what noodles go with this style of sauce! So helpful and kind. I will return for more than one item. The place isn't too big but it's packed with all different items to choose from.

Wondering what the cleanest and most organized store in Chinatown is located?…read more Yes, "Cleanliness and organization" are probably two words that are never associated with Chinatown, but it does exist at Kanjico! This store located in the Mini Mall of Chinatown Cultural Plaza, near Pho Huong Lan. It's your typical grocery store of a good variety of dry goods, frozen items, and etc. No produce here though. The prices are on par with other stores. They also have Chinese newspapers. I haven't seen anyone sell the World Journal newspaper since the two bookstores closed in the cultural plaza. Overall, a really nice store. Good variety of items , good prices, and found some unique items that I haven't seen elsewhere. Owner was friendly. I feel we need more reasons to go to the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, and Kanjico can be one of them!

They have a big selection of grocery items from Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Thai and more. The main ones they import from are the ones I mentioned. There's also a huge selection of fresh and pre dried vegan and vegetarian meat (fully vegan) and tofu from Taiwan, Vietnam and Aloha Tofu (Hawaii local fresh tofu). There's only 2 places on the island that I know of that you can get these vegan Asian meats, which is so delicious, healthy with nature soy,m fibers, and has far less sodium and preservatives than the American beyond meat veg options. (Though I enjoy those to make western dishes from time to time) The customer service here is very nice. They don't have staff walking around the store, but at checkout they are so nice and friendly, and always help you bag your items. Highly recommend! Amazing!

They have packaged foods, sauces, fresh produce, proteins, and canned drinks. Their target audience is SouthEast Asian shoppers and prices are reasonable. Kau Pen Sin offers a wide variety of Chinese and Asian dried goods from the luxurious bird's nest to a variety of dried mushrooms, dried noodles, dried seafood to nuts, teas, herbs, and etc. This store is located along Maunakea St in Chinatown, next to Pho Que Huong, near Lam's Kitchen. It's a small store that's jam packed with items top to bottom. The owner is the Queen of Queen's Travel! She's been my travel agents a couple of times, and many people go to her for cheap flights. Her office actually had a bunch of the items she's selling now, so with pretty much zero business in international travel, it's great that she opened up a store at a good location to sell her dried goods. Overall, a nice store to get your specialty items for those Chinese soups, stews, and special Bird's Nest Soup. There's a lot of variety here, and different qualities as well, so you can choose the one you're comfortable with. The higher priced and higher quality ones are the best, but a lot of the mid range grades are still more than acceptable. The owner is nice and can speak many languages, and don't worry if she's talking on multiple phones while texting, she can still effectively talk to you!
