I give it a 4 because my updo came out perfectly! For what it's worth, don't rely on the picture you bring in of what you want to get done to get done if you have long, thick hair like me! It took a million bobby pins and my arms hurt the next morning trying to get them out. BUT he worked so hard and diligently putting each bobby pin in the right place to get it all up and stay. I used my Groupon which was 110 bucks but he charged me 75, so basically I saved 15 bucks. What's nice is that if you stay at the Holiday Inn, you are connected to the Merchandise Mart so you don't have to step outside and could just walk back to your hotel room. I usually have a regular stylist I go to but the Thomas West salon was closer to where I work and I had a gift card so I figured I would try it! Well that was a big mistake. In the beginning it seemed like things were going smoothly and the stylist understood what I wanted and was doing a great job, until she got to my bangs... Now, I've had bangs in the past and for anyone who has had bangs, it's a very tricky thing to have done. The length of the cut is very important. So, before she cut anything in the front, I explained to her in great detail what I wanted and what I didn't want. I wanted long bangs cut bluntly. Instead I walked out with something rockerbilly'ish, super short and cut unevenly. So since the cut I have been forced to pin my hair back as much as I can with the help of hairspray so that it looks like I don't have bangs, till they grow out. My bangs are so horrible, that it would have been easier to have shaved it off instead. I just think that it sucks that I had such a bad experience there since the salon and staff seemed nice, but if the stylist can't listen to the clients need, then what's the point of explaining what is wanted from the visit? read more

I go to Dayna every time for the Thermal straightening. She is awesome and always organized. * So the 5 star rating goes to her. I really like her personality which is rare. I've met so many snobby hair dressers coming from Dallas. I would give lower ratings to the makeup artist who tried to run out on me even though I had an appointment and their website that kills me a little inside every time I see it. Cody is amazing! I have recommended my two best friends to him and continued to go to him exclusively after my first appintment. Every time I go to the salon, all of the staff is friendly and isn't product-pushing like some salons. I first went to Cody when I wanted to get a lot of hair cut off and told him to do whatever he felt would look good. I wasn't let down! He gave me a wavy lob that has gotten me compliments for the last year. I went to him again a few weeks ago to have him match my natural color and do some baylage highlighting and again, he didn't fail to disappoint again! Like other reviewers, I followed Lira here from her previous salon. Thomas West is really nice - clean, good products, and on my way home from work. Lira is amazing - I originally started going to her when I needed my highlights fixed from a previous colorist. Since then, she's been doing wonders with my color and cut - always easy to style myself after getting home. I have naturally strawberry blonde hair which is a pain for most colorists to get right, but Lira manages to do my color in a way that looks natural (and better than the original). When I called the salon unfortunately the people I requested were booked up or on vacation since it was 4th of July weekend. So they booked me with Alexis who was fairly new from most staff since she had only been there for 2 years. I have been going to Thomas West for years and I have never ever had anything less than a great experience so I am not sure what all the fuss is on here! I have seen the owner in several times and he has always been friendly. This last time I was just in he was at the front desk and immediately greeted me and asked me if I would like a drink. AJ does my color and especially if you have blonde hair she is AMAZING. I have looked for a girl to get my blonde as bright and light as I requested it and I have finally found her after 5 years. She makes it look very natural, is careful not to damage my hair, and works really fast. My color is usually done in an hour. Michelle does my cuts and she is very talented. I used to have very short hair and couldn't for the life of me find someone to cut my thick hair into the short boy cuts I liked. She was the first! Now my hair is long and I feel like I got a $200 cut in LA every time I walk out of the salon. She also does great extensions! I travel to Chicago quite a bit for work and happened upon Thomas West do to it's location in the Merchandis Mart. I played the salon roulette- as I knew nothing about the stylists and wound up with an appointment with Kwam. Kwam is young, but his experience and expertise is apparent. When I entered the salon my hair was in a sorry state of brittle-hopelessness. He transformed me with a great cut (he does a dry cut). I also opted for a keratin treatment the following day because I began to trust Kwam. He not only cut my hair, but shared so much knowledge with me about how to care for my hair and what can effect growth and shine etc. Kwam cut my hair in the beginning of February, it is now May 8th and I haven't been in a salon since. My hair still looks great- that is a clear sign of a great cut. It may seem pricey at first, but for the value in the end -I have saved myself some $$$ as the look/cut is maintained. When I left the salon I was told by my co-workers that I looked younger. One of my co-workers had me walk her to the salon and find Kwam so she could make an appt the following day and get the exact same haircut by him. My worst fear is that the next time I go to Thomas West that Kwam will not be there. It's apparent that Kwam is a star. My suggestion is to get to him while you have the opportunity. read more

I was looking to get my ombre redone and a haircut. I bought the Groupon and called the salon to make an appointment. I didn't ask for someone specific and I ended up getting Alan. I first, when in for a consultation for my hair. I fell in love with Alan then! I told him exactly what I wanted and the type of haircut I wanted. He made his suggestions and recommendations that were great. A week after my consultation was my actual appointment to get my Ombre redone and my haircut. I think both Tom and my stylist, Melissa, are outstanding. I have been my hair cut here for about 6 years and no complaints at all! Melissa has patiently taken me and my hair through a number of phases (long, neat, shaved, etc.) and does a tremendous job each time. I have been going there for so long that Tom recognized my voice and chats a little as well. I was also impressed that when my gf wanted to get something special done with her hair (straightening? coloring? I'm not sure) they insisted that before performing the service she meet with the stylist and discuss if it would really work with her hair, if it would look good on her, etc. All this was done for free (I think) and I love the fact they just didn't take the money and run. My only complaint is that my initial stylist said she would not highlight my hair because I had colored my hair the day before. When I sat down with the stylist, we started chatting and I was asking her questions about hair care, as mine has been very dry lately. Our conversation went very well because right then and there, I asked her if she had time for a haircut. I found the ONLY person I allow to cut/color/do whatever to my hair at this salon. Melanie does my hair and is incredibly talented and professional. She's super friendly with everyone, and it's obvious that she knows what she's doing. I've gone from blonde to red no problems, and loads of compliments from people I don't even know. She always takes the extra time to make sure we're exactly on the same page, and it's always done in a timely manner. I love her! I got a color plus haircut with Noemi today and had the best experience. Everyone at the salon is very professional, approachable and friendly! Noemi is an amazing stylist and artist, and I left the salon with beautiful caramel highlights, a flattering cut and loose curls. Every girl's dream - to look and feel beautiful inside and out! The stylists were all sampling a new styling creme with terrific hold and smell, and I asked to purchase the bottle. Since it was so new, the owner told me that they were not selling the product yet, and he had just given the product to his stylists to sample. He gave me a bottle for free to take home!!! I have gotten my hair cut with Alison at Thomas West for several years and cannot recommend her enough. She was recommended to me by a coworker who had a great bob but very different hair from mine (tons of thick hair, as opposed to my baby-fine, thin hair). From the beginning, Alison has given me a great haircut every time and has been a friendly, compassionate person as well. She noticed that I had a lesion on my scalp and mentioned it to me, which no stylist has done before (turned out to be nothing but I had a biopsy because even the doctor was worried). She's also been very supportive and helpful when I've experienced hair loss. I go back each time for the amazing haircuts she gives, but also because I know she'll pay attention to what I need and am worried about with my hair, without judgment. I was paying a lower rate before but have decided to simply get my hair cut less often in order to keep going to Allison. The salon itself is nice too. Very conveniently located in Merchandise Mart. Thomas West was very accommodating at the last minute for wedding hair and makeup for myself and two bridesmaids. Service was friendly, prompt and top notch! The make up application was flawless and stayed on all night...morning. The hair styles were lovely and stayed in all night. What I appreciated, was each person explained what they were doing and why as we went along. It was great to know in case I had to redo any touch ups. Also, I was in and out. NO waiting around. I have done hair myself for several years and just left the salon not too long ago to pursue other passions so I am extremely particular to say the least! I have been a blonde my entire life and the color formulation she comes up with not only accentuates my skin color but my natural undertones tones as well. I have to admit I was a little nervous when I made an appointment here based on the mixed reviews the salon's received over the last few years, but I am so glad that I did! My experience was nothing short of amazing and I will absolutley be back! I chose the salon solely based on its location, as I needed a place close to the site of a Saturday night event I was organizing. I used their online/email system to request an appointment and I received a prompt reply and was set up with Jerry for a Saturday morning appointment I arrived ten minutes early and was greeted promptly and politely by the front desk staff and Jerry was with me right away. I had brought a few pictures of updo's I'd found online that I liked and we talked through a few ideas together. I told him my hair doesn't hold curl very well so I wanted to avoid any style that involved too much curl as I knew it would fall flat within an hour. But Jerry assured me he could make my curls stick - and he did! My hair turned out absolutely gorgeous and I received a ton of compliments. The best part was it held up for 12+ hours and my curls were still bouncy when I took all the pins out! I recently moved to Chicago and was looking for a new hairdresser, and I definitely found that when coming here! I went to this salon about a month ago and meant to write a review right away because I had such a great experience. I got there about 5 minutes late and they were ready for me right away. My stylist was Amanda M., she took lots of time to listen to exactly what I wanted and ensure we were on the same page before she got started. I have dark blonde hair and last had highlights about 5 months ago, so I was very much in need of some highlights and overall brightening up of my hair for the end of summer. I stressed I wanted it to be significantly blonder but very natural with thin highlights, and I left the salon with a beautiful blonde color exactly how I wanted it. She even put a toner on my hair at the end to make sure it was all well blended and there were no streaks. It's also in a great location right in the Merchandise Mart, very easy to get to from several El trains, and the salon was also very clean. I got a Groupon after reading the Yelp reviews and went for the jump. I had Melanie cut my hair short and love it!! I'm Asian so it's hard to find someone not Asian to cut my hair properly. Melanie knows how to cut hair. Even my fiance who normally doesn't like short hair said he likes it!! I got my hair cut during lunch time so when I got back to work, EVERYONE complimented me. I don't write Yelp reviews often because I honestly don't feel like taking the time. But, when it comes to my experience at Thomas West with Lindsey, I feel like I need to say something. I have lashes and brows that have a lot of blond in them, even though I have dark brown hair. So getting lash and brow tints it important to me. It makes my eyes stand out so much more. And for any of you that have ever done it, sometimes it's not a pleasant experience. Unless your esthetician knows what they are doing and Lindsey definitely knows what she is doing. She makes me feel so comfortable while I am there. She makes sure that it is as painless as possible. And she does an absolutely fantastic job.
