I just asked. he will do what he can to help. Everybody has seen Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid... well when it comes to master tailors Master Thien is the Vietnamese version of Mr. Miyagi. The quiet, but cordial tailor treats his work with the love of a Bonzai Master tending and clipping his trees. I have had great bespoke suits, shirts and other items made and tailored on Savile Row, London from the great tailors of Hardy Amies, Henry Poole & Co., and shirts by Charles Tyrwhitt (which I'm wearing now), Harvie & Hudson, Turnbull & Asser and Thomas Pink. Hong Kong Tailors like Rashmi Custom Tailors and W. W. Chan & Sons and a few good personal tailors in Bangkok to name a few. So I say this with good authority that in America the art, craft and love of tailoring is slowly disappearing in the wake of cheaply made, cheaply priced massed produced throw away clothing made in sweat shops to a fickle increasingly soul-less consumer. Thien did something I've only seen master tailors do. Sized me up by eye. Something that comes only from years of experience, being taught the right way, then exercising such experience to a golden empiric understanding. He seems to work alone, since every time I have been there, I see no one besides waiting customers. After a few minutes he emerges from the back, entering the room quietly like a Buddhist monk in meditation, mindful of only his thought of that moment, until he makes eye contact, then a warm smile emerges. He had me in and out of his shop in less than 5 minutes and the alterations were perfect!... I am not easy to get perfect with my 'pleasantly plump' proportions. Do yourself a favor, and treat yourself to something we may not have an opportunity to see much longer. The work of a true craftsman performed by a true master of this trade. His prices are very reasonable... my tailors on Savile Row would have charged 10x this amount...literally. Honest, Fair, Reasonable performed by a Master Craftsman should bring a tear to anyone's eyes that understands the humble greatness they are in the presence of when they have entered Thien's small shop. I've been a customer of Thien's for many years now and as long as his little shop is there I will never go anywhere else. What he did for me a couple days ago is what prompted me to write this review. It was Wednesday morning. I had an interview on Thursday morning. I took in my uniform pants and shirt that needed a lot of work, hemming and sewing and stitching and well...it was not an easy task. This man stayed after closing to work on my uniform. It was an emergency situation and I didn't even know I was going to get interviewed but he followed through. He said he would call me exactly at 7:30 pm to pick up my clothes and that is exactly what he did. He promised and he followed through. When I got there the shop was closed but he was in there working hastily to have my things ready. Who does this for customers? He cares about his customers, and it's not just business with him. All the yelp reviews have made him busy though so sometimes there is trouble parking. I love this man. I looked so professional for my interview thanks to him. read more

I bought a suit recently which needed a lot of excess material taken out of it to get the modern slim style I prefer. It was my first time using Thien as my tailor. He greeted me and was very courteous and kind. I then showed Thien a picture of a suit which had the fit I was looking for. Thien knew exactly what I was looking to achieve and he had me put my suit on. A few measurements here and a few pins to hold things in place and we were done. I won't post the cost of Thien's services here but I was very pleased. I felt that his service, precision, and understanding of what I wanted was worth way more than what he charged. He even tossed in a new garment bag for my suit because he had a spare one that he was given. That was very nice of him and I tipped him extra for being awesome. I've been going to Mr. Thein's Tailor shop for more than four years and I wouldn't consider going to any other tailor. He is professional, fair and a very sweet man to work with. Look, I hate games and I hate tailors in general because they butcher clothing. Most Tailors don't know how to make cuts or don't really know how to make a suit fall well It really makes a difference doing proper cutting, so that your clothes comes out nicely. Over the course of the past four years Mr. Thein has done a great job of learning my needs and adjusting cuts. In short, just doing an overall great job on my suits and regular clothing. I'm particular as you may already tell about my suits given that some of them I spend in excess of $2000 per suit (my job requires it) and I want to make sure that my suits last. He always does a great job like I said he's always fair and after four years I consider him a personal friend. In summary and I've been to a lot of Tailor shops and I wouldn't give them two cents for their attention to detail or craftsmanship. Mr. Thein is another story. He's a great man and a really fantastic Tailor to work with. Even my ex-wife who used to complain incessantly about tailoring, eventually changed tailors at my request and fell in love with Mr. Thein. Trust me, if Mr. Thein could satisfy her Taikoring needs, you'll be very satisfied :) In fact, please do not come to his store to get any tailoring work done. If I were to review Thien a year ago, he would probably get a 5-star. But I guess time has changed and the good yelp review has kept him very busy, and therefore punctuality and quality suffer. Thien was introduced to me by the then-flawless Yelp reviews he had. Being 5'4", I need to hem almost every new pants I buy. Apparently being short is a rare trait in this modern world too. I've also taken my boyfriend's suit pants that was messed up during alteration at 3-day suit broker (Yes, we bought the suit there). Initially, I found Thien sweet and endearing, as a previous reviewer said, in a grandpa sort of way. I thought it was old school and cute that he doesn't write any information on his clients down and remembers you by face, and at his age quite impressive. Now, however, I realized that this is pure laziness or unprofessionalism. I went to Thien on a Tuesday to get 3 pants hemmed (easy!) and shoulder straps on a dress shortened. The dress is a little complicated because of the style and material, but I told him how I wanted it done and he agreed. He told me everything will be done by next Tuesday (~1 week). I asked if he can do the dress earlier because I need to wear it on Wednesday and if something isn't right, we have time to fix it. But he insisted on Tuesday. So I trusted his skills and judgement, and left. The next Tuesday when I came to pick up my stuff, he only finished two of the pants, and he did NOT do anything to the dress. This is the dress that I needed to wear to an event THE NEXT DAY! I was infuriated. He then said that the alteration is a lot more complicated then what he thought, and it would cost me $30 than the initial $10 that he quoted (for the dress only). $30 alteration for a $50 dress I got on sale?! And of course he can't do it soon enough for me to wear TOMORROW!!! Why didn't he call me and tell me this last week so I can pick up the dress and go elsewhere?! Oh yeah, he never took my information down. Doh! I was pissed. Sensing that I was pissed, he tried to cajole me by asking if I'd lost weight. WTF? (Objection! Irrelevant, your honor!) I rudely said NO. Then he insisted by saying that he's known and seen me for a long time now....5 years...and he definitely thinks I've lost weight. So wrong and so insulting. I ended up sewing the dress by hand by myself. I am NOT coming back here again. read more

My first review... I had just purchased 2 new Hugo Boss suites on Saturday and had a wedding on Sunday at 3:30pm. I called Thien first thing in the morning to see if there is anyway he could hem my pants in time for the wedding only hours away. He told me to come in right away, took the necessary measurements and got right to work. He called me about an hour and a half later and said they were all done. The hem on the pants came out great, he didn't charge me extra for the quick turn around for the hemming, but I had to give him more because he truly saved the day for me. My other suits were at the cleaners (bad timing/planning on my part). I'm now taking all of my tailoring needs to Thien. read more

This dude is the man! Took in my suit to get slimmed down. It was originally a J.Crew Ludlow, so it's already slim to begin with, but I wanted it skinny. Thien knew exactly what to do, and even had a catalog with pages torn out of J.Crew catalogs for examples. I picked what I wanted, and he said to come back in a week. A week went by, time for me to pickup. I came in and the suit fit like a glove. I definitely felt like the fit was on point with what you see in Italy and France (the guys there dress very sharp!) I was very happy w/ the work. Another week went by, and I happen to get an insane price on a Zegna suit. The pants that came with the suit were a size 32 though. I brought the pants in and he was able to open them up to a 34 per my request. Better yet, he kept the measurements off the pants he did the week prior, and made them all to spec. All of this with a smile, and awesome prices. This is definitely my new place for alterations. read more

I needed some alterations on my suit so i searched & found Thien Tailoring here on yelp. He had the best ratings in my area so i gave him a try. The shop is ran by an old gentleman "Mr. Thien". He had me try on my suit & immediately knew that it was 2 sizes too big. I told him i wanted that slim suit look & he measured me up. It came out i had to shorten & taper the sleeves, bring in the sides of the blazer, taper & shorten the pants all for a reasonable price. The turn around time was a week for all that. One week later i went in to pick up my suit & after trying it on, it felt like a total different suit! Everything fit perfectly! My "baggy" suit now had that slim suit fit. I was more than happy. Mr. Thien is very professional, quick, & his work is top notch! Since then i had a couple dress shirts altered, polo shirts shortened, & another suit tailored. I highly recommend him. read more

Bless this little man and his magical fingers for saving my wardrobe and wallet. I've brought in every piece of garment that could possibly be hemmed, lengthened, taken in, or taken out -- water weight, I swear. Quality work and decent prices. Sure, there's somewhat of a language barrier, but the man speaks 'Barney Stinson' so tell him you wanna look "legen -- wait for it... -- dary", and you shouldn't have any problems. I really like Thien. He's a nice guy and he does quality work, but he desperately needs to do something about hilt he way he runs his business. Setting aside the fact that his place is a mess (it can be forgiven as organized chaos), the wait times are simply ridiculous. It can take literally hours to wait for him to free up before he can see you. I understand that he can't move any faster, but to wait an hour with a line of just 3-4 people is unforgivable. I've been a regular customer of Thien's for several years now and will continue to be simply because THIEN is the BEST! You know that saying that you should never judge a book by its cover? Well it certainly applies to Thien's storefront. Don't let the hole-in-the-wall interior fool you. Sure its tiny & messy, but the quality is in Thien's workmanship and professionalism. I've gotten suit jackets & pants hemmed, jeans hemmed, jackets shortened, and shirts taken in...all for way below cost, when compared to standard tailors. Thien has always been extremely kind and professional. His prices are beyond reasonable and on average, it'll take him about a week to get things done. He is on a first-name basis with everyone which just speaks to his friendliness and he is just totally on point about tailoring. TIPS: -He's only open from Thurs-Sunday. -Plenty of free street parking on Hawthorne, especially on weekends. -No need to make an appointment - I always just walk-in and he sees me immediately. -Give him at least a week to get your things tailored. -Call first to confirm if has your clothes done so that you don't waste time going there if it isn't ready. -Cash only - paid when you pick up your clothes. Thien is an old-skool gentleman, always walks customers to the door as he says goodbye and is very patient and gracious. He used to make custom suits but not anymore since he is so busy with regular tailoring work. TONS of regulars here which just shows how you how good Thien is! I've had several of my jeans hemmed here with original hem and it is indeed very reasonably priced! My Vietnamese coworker introduced me to Thien because he gets his suits and paints tailored here. I found out another coworker's father used to work for Thien back in Saigon!!! You will often see Thien watching a t.v. program and sewing at the same time. o.k. So This is a little shop on a main boulevard ,yet it seems hidden. I went here to get some pants legs shortened.I bought them at a discount because the legs were extra long.I came with two pairs.I picked them up 2 days later.Unfortunately one of the pants was still very long and the other was only o.k. in length.I went back and told the owner and he said some pants are different and require individual fitting.I said fine,how much to fix them "again" he says 4 bucks .I already had paid him 6.I WAS DISSAPOINTED THAT HE CHARGED ME TWICE FOR THE SAME PAIR OF PANTS. All in all this place is fine if you have no other place to go to. I found it hard to communicate with the owner because of the language barrier.His English ISNT BAD BUT HE DOES HAVE A HEAVY ACCENT. I've had alterations done at Nordstroms, Macys, different dry cleaners and THEIN TAILORING is by far the best! I brought two pairs of pretty expensive jeans to try this place out and was not disappointed. Note - This place isn't fancy, just two sweet old men doing their thing. Seems like most good things are holes in the wall! One pair was previously hemmed at a dry cleaning place that I needed to fix and the other was a new pair of jeans. $10 for original hem and $5 to fix. He will generally tell you to come back in about a week to pick up your clothes. Okay, seriously I could complain about a lot of things here but it's not worth it. Mr. Thien is talented and his prices are really reasonable. I took in four shirts to be fitted to my more athletic physique I recently acquired. Mr. Thien took measurements and had me return the following week to try on the changed shirt. I asked to make a few minor adjustments and they would be perfect. Mr. Thien tells me, "Okay Michael, you come back next week. Very good. Thank You." Well Mr. Thien forgot he was on vacation the following week, then I went on vacation for a couple weeks, and then I plum forgot about my clothes. One month later I call back, "Hi Mr. Thien, it's Mike. I forgot about my clothes. Are they ready?" "Not ready Mike. Please come back next week. They will be ready." Well I forgot again for another month. So I call back Mr. Thien. "Hi Mr. Thien, It's Mike. I totally forgot about my clothes are they ready for pickup?" "No no. Not ready Mike. Please, you come back next week. Be ready for try on and see you like." So another month passes and then I finally go to pick up my clothes. The shirt fit was amazing. Mr. Thien is very talented. Word of advice, if you need your clothes done quickly, please let Mr. Thien know how important it is that you get your stuff done. He is very talented but he is also very old school. No computers, credit card terminals or file systems in this place. He keeps it very simple. He remembers your name, face, and voice which is REMARKABLE. I will definitely return to see Mr. Thien and would recommend him to anyone. Thank god I didn't need the clothes done immediately but also thank god that I found Mr. Thien to help me out. $12 a shirt to be fitted is not a bad deal I hear. Thank you Mr. Thien. Rundown - this place is great! - owner is friendly and helpful - fast service My coworker asked me to check this place out because she thinks I know good quality tailors. I'm not sure if I do but I get a lot of my clothes tailored because I'm short and petite. I'm glad I took her recommendation because the owner is great. He remembers me and he gets things done fast and does it very well. The prices are very reasonable. I've had dresses, dress slacks, jackets and jeans hemmed. Never had a problem with the fit. Add me in as a naysayer. Yes, his work is inexpensive, but the prices rose inexplicably the second time I went. And the stitching was sloppy. I took to him several button-down shirts. On all, the stitching... 1. ...was much looser than the original stitching (takes less thread). From a glance, you can tell it was altered. 2. ...wobbled around the original stitch marks instead of overlapping them straight. Stitch holes are now visible, wonderful. These will grow after washes. Some of it is also coming undone after only a couple washes. Do yourself a favor and take a sacrificial item first (like a dress shirt from Target), and see if you're satisfied. If you just care about your jeans fitting at the end you might be OK. If you want quality tailoring that will stand up to any kind of scrutiny, look elsewhere. read more
