Quality, quality, quality, and excellence. I wish that's all I could write and that would fill the entire review, and I'll tell you why. I've spent the last half year trying different tailors across the city, and as luck would have it, the best is just a couple of blocks from my current location. Walking in, you will see clothes everywhere. It may not seem like the tailor has a method in the beginning, but Thien has amazing skills and does excellent work. He is always busy, but always makes the time to talk with you and help you out. He pays close attention to the needs of the customer and really shows the details of his work. Apparently, Thien has history of tailoring (Father to son) from back in his hometown, where he told me he and his father owned a suit tailoring establishment. I wasn't surprised because every piece of clothing I've taken has intricate work done on it. If you're looking for a real tailor, with an eye for detail, attentive service, and just an overall nice person, Mr. Thien is the right person. Seven tailors and eight months later, hands down, Mr. Thien is the best. The incredible part is that his prices are super reasonable for superior work. I've had tailors do the same amount of work on one pair of pants for two to three times the price, and their work was just okay. I've had tailors claim a pick up time, and several didn't deliver. I've visited Mr. Thien five or six times now and all my stuff was ready when he said so. I brought my kid brother in from his visit from college. He liked the work so much, he found some pants from two or three years ago and had them hemmed and tapered; he loved them and said he would bring all his clothes to Mr. Thien from now on. He's a very picky dude, but I wasn't surprised that he too was impressed. I've been bringing my clothes here for a couple of years. It's a tiny little shop that's easily missed when driving by. I usually get all my jeans fixed because I'm only 5'0 and he does a great job! I've had lace dresses altered, skirts altered, and blouses altered and he always does a great job. He's done dresses for me at the last minute (2 days before I needed it) and he gets it done and doesn't charge extra. Overall, I really love his work and he's such a nice man. Discovered Thien thru the amazing yelp reviews and wow what a find! Coming from the fashion industry, I'm extremely picky about my clothes and the detailed stitching so I decided to take in a few pieces to test. I also took in a few other pieces to other places in the Southbay to test some of the top tailors in the area. Thien definitely has the best prices & best stitching quality! I also feel he is the most genuine and honest about his work. He is so extremely kind, caring, and heart-felt. I can tell he really cares about his craftsmanship and to me that is key for an outstanding tailor. I can't even imagine anyone being mean to him. So for those who can't stand to wait in line (because he is extremely busy and popular) then this place is not for you. I went in on Saturday morning and there was a long line so I just did some errands and luckily returned when he had time to breathe. When I was done there were more people waiting. He sure is a busy bee so people need to be super patient and know he takes time to meet with his customers. Plus he runs the shop by himself. If you want top-notch quality work on your pieces, then you have to be patient. I agree with another reviewer on the reason why he's been in business for so long! When you come in your eyes might wonder with all the clothes sprawled everywhere but there is a method to his madness! He is really great at what he does. Mr. Thien is AMAZING! I brought in 5 work pants, a blazer, a romper, and my boyfriend's scrubs for alteration and he did a fantastic job on each item! I came in at 2pm on a Sunday and there was no wait at all. Once I had each item fitted, he already knew what needed to be altered before I said anything! He even made suggestions to make sure the clothes would turn out well. He is a very kind and honest man. I bought a romper on sale for $12 and it needed A LOT of major alterations. The alterations would've costed me $25, but he gave an honest advice and said it would be better if I return the romper (still had the tag on) and get a smaller size so the alterations wouldn't be as drastic, hence, cost less. I wanted one of the my new work pants to look exactly like one I already have (which has been sadly discontinued by the store); Mr. Thien took the measurements of my old pants and after a week, my new pants look identical in style with my old ones--slit, length, etc !! My boyfriend has gone back to get more of his scrubs altered and even though I didn't go with him, Mr. Thien remembered me and even told my boyfriend that he says hi! He is so nice! read more

This man is an artist at what he does. I've read all the previous reviews and they're spot on. His shop is not flashy at all, but that does not mean anything. His work speaks for itself. Although he's old, he still understands current trends, and tailors to your vision if you explain it to him. I am short, so I have to tailor my jackets to make the sleeves shorter than usual, and take them in a little further than normal, to give myself a taller look. Thien understood that and got it perfect. Prices are unbelievably reasonable, and you can tell he works hard. I absolutely love this guy. He does GREAT work and has the lowest prices anywhere I've ever found. Being 5'2", I'm generally getting my stuff hemmed if they don't come in 'ankle' size (ie. short..). He hemmed some pants for $5. I took an expensive silk outfit to him that I needed tailored in almost every way imaginable and all the various changes (probably about 12 different adjustments) cost me $17. Unreal! He's totally old-school and doesn't even take down your phone number. I guess he figures if you forget to come pick it up, it's your loss.. Not sure. Please note! He is closed on Sundays and Mondays. I found this place on yelp after searching for a good tailor. His shop is a little out of the way and parking can be an issue, but you don't stay in business for 40+ years in the same spot if weren't the best at what you do! Mr Thien is a master at his craft. I went in for a suit fitting and expressed my wants. He took my suggestions and even went the extra mile to show me images of what he thought I wanted to confirm. When I got the suit back, it just fit like a glove and I looked pretty damn good. When I went to pick up the suit, his place was packed with clients waiting patiently. I just wanted to quickly update my review to say Mr. Thien is still amazing, even more amazing, then when I started going to him 3+ years ago. He is not only highly talented at his skill, but he is honestly one of the sweetest, most humble people ever. Yelp has made him an extremely busy tailor (I think he changed his open shop hours a year ago just to have more time to keep up with the tailoring). He's been around the neighborhood for almost 40 years, so obviously he doesn't need Yelp to begin with, but Yelp certainly seems to have boosted his business exponentially. That said, IF YOU ARE AN INPATIENT, ENTITLED PERSON DON'T BOTHER MR. THIEN! He is a one-man shop - and extremely popular - so patience is key. I never rush him with when I need my clothes; he generally tries for a one-week turnaround but I always give him at least 2 weeks or more (some of you asking for same day service are making me cringe). Mr. Thien is so nice that I have a feeling he has a very hard time saying no to people. IMO asking a man in his 70s that is running an entire shop alone (with many customer fittings and payments) to also make time to do actual tailoring while the shop is open is really inconsiderate. Just when is he going to find time for you when he clearly has customers coming in and out all day (this is why he needs to close the shop Mon-Wed just to tailor)? And this isn't a first-come, first-serve place. While he's working with you (like he's asking how you want something altered or you're trying the garment on, someone may come in to pick something up or quickly drop something off - don't get annoyed if he tries to juggle them in with you. He's efficient, and the world does not revolve around you. I had to vent because I just went to pick some things up and I can tell newbie customers that have seen Yelp reviews are expecting Mr. Thien to cater to their every whim and in a hurry too. I can totally see Mr. Thien closing his shop for good sooner than later because he probably doesn't want to deal with entitled jerks in his golden years. After seeing all the yelp reviews, I brought a pair of pants here to be taken in. The owner is super nice but after I told him that I didn't want the length shortened, he talked me into it. It was only supposed to be a small amount of length but the pants now end above my ankle (its boot cut) so they are completely unwearable. I did love the work he did in taking the pants in and they fit great but unfortunately it's pointless since they're so short. read more

I bought an extremely expensive suit and I sure wasn't going to just go to anyone to get the alterations done. Yelp never disappoints and I discovered Thien Tailoring. Like other Yelpers have mentioned, he only opens Thursday-Sunday for limited hours. However, once you step in, this hole in the wall shop is filled with high end suits. You know every customer trusts his work and skills, and I definitely did too! LOCATION There's plenty of free street parking on Hawthorne. Look for the yellow sign that says Thien Tailoring (look at the Yelp pictures)! PRICE From personal experience and from looking at the other reviews, the pricing here is very fair and reasonable. You get more than you pay for because his skills are impeccable and I wouldn't go anywhere else for my precious expensive suits! SERVICE There is a well covered changing room and he will pin your hemming there but still ask if you're ok with the length. Although there is a language barrier, you can still manage to communicate easily. He is extremely kind and humble for his great skills. Also, one time the thread from the hemming came out from my pants because it got caught on my heel, which he quickly hemmed on the spot without charging me anything. If that's not great customer service, I don't know what is. If you have an item of clothing that needs the extra attention and quality of service, be sure to bring it to Thien Tailoring.
