If you want to sample the coolest place to go for a drink and eats in Telluride, There is the place. Period. Visit There if you're looking for an ultra-hip and laid back atmosphere, real 'mixology' cocktails (a la the real deal-- these are the finest in mixed drinks), and some of the finest (and very unique) finger foods you've ever eaten. Owner Andrew Tyler came from Manhattan to Telluride and brought with him what I would call his own unique vision of an ultra-classy speakeasy where the room is just small enough that you pretty much carry on a conversation with anyone/everyone in the place when it's not completely packed to the gils-- and it gets packed to the gils because this place is special.
There is just a bit off the beaten path of Main Street down on the quieter West End of town, and boy you will be glad that you got off of Main Street! There exists in a little neighborhood of its own on a very welcoming block, just about three blocks from the gondola. Tyler and his right-hand gal Pia take great care to bring as much creativity into the bar/restaurant as possible, and evidence of this is all around the place: in the custom fitted ceiling, light fixtures, and barstools, in the popcorn machine that churns out fresh hot and specially spiced popcorn continuously, the utterly different wall hangings, the ASPEN TREES that sprout up- INSIDE- at the back of the place with a table in their midst, the completely custom bar, the eccentric/stylish clothes worn by the staff, and in any of the number of strange objects on display behind the bar- old cowboy guns and masquerade masks... the list goes on and on.
Oftentimes I feel like I'm walking into a play when I walk in There; the staff play out great antics together as they mix up drinks and bring them out, dancing around the space and calling out to each other in what sounds like a mixture of song and gibberish; they have a blast and they're something to watch, too. These people are absolute professionals in the cocktail department- I can't emphasize that enough- and they really put on a show as they prepare their drinks. From shaking and pouring to bottle tossing and drink delivery, it's very entertaining to watch, and these guys get a lot of joy out of it; it's no idle show. There has a style all th There has lots of energy and the staff appear to be electric as they go about their duties, always with brilliant smiles on their faces. It's a warm and lively place to meet friends old and new alike and the staff also have a way of relating to each other that feels like they're a family-- and you feel a part of it from the moment you walk in the door.
There is a locals favorite, certainly, and you kind of feel like you're 'in on something' when you're there; it kind of feels like you're at a private party, it's so intimate, and you may wonder when others will show up to crash this fantastic scene. I had the great fortune of living next door to There during most of the first year they were open and I never could have imagined the impact the place would have on my social reality. My partner and I began frequenting There because of the great vibe that Tyler put out and because of the fantastic food and drink offerings. I shot some photography of There for Tyler and the more I got to hanging around the place and Tyler and the staff, the more fond I grew of all of them. There became my 'Cheers bar,' the place where I'd steer to on my way home after skiing or mountain biking, and the place I'd steer to on my way out for the night, or on my way home at the end of the night... Thankfully popcorn acted as a great filler so that I didn't need to be drinking every single time I walked in the door, although I spent plenty of time drinking there and making new friends! I've experienced Sunday brunch there, late night dance parties, and everything in between.
There has their own Sonos (wireless integrated music) system and a fleet of Ipads that are handed around regularly to customers who'd like to dj. There's a projector that often screens old movies or ski flicks, and generally there's just a FUN atmosphere in the place all the time. The staff are top notch waitstaff and bartenders: friendly, helpful and knowledgable, and most importantly, ON THE CASE, as they often need to handle extremely busy rushes of many people and they do so flawlessly. You won't soon find another place like There. Not out in the world and certainly not in Telluride. It's a truly classy place where you can feel at home as a first time visitor, experience fine cuisine and drinks, meet a really wide range of people, and be guaranteed to enjoy yourself in a completely unique and very cool environment. Highly recommended. For parties of 8 or more it's a good idea to call ahead to reserve a table during festival times or peak winter or summer weekends. Oh yeah, and they also prepare some of the best coffee I've ever tasted! Give them a try! read more
