First of all... can I get a round of applause for the name of this public transportation service?! It's called *ahem*... "The Bus". It's, Dare I say... very "original"... ?! Well, look at it this way; no one could possibly ever forget what it's called! "Oh, I'm just waiting for 'The Bus' to come." Okay, let me stop. But, guess what? I LOVE this damn bus! The bus saved me hundreds of dollars in car rental, gas, parking, and ride sharing fees! It travels throughout the entire island... the ENTIRE island! It's only $2.75 for a one way ticket and $5.50 to take it all day long. There were 4 different bus stops located within walking distance of my hotel room. The bus drivers are super friendly and will tell you which buses to take to get to what destination. They will even tell you where to get off at your stop if you aren't sure. I thought for a fact that the bus would mainly be filled with locals. But to my surprise, there were several tourists taking these buses as well! The buses were full of tourists in the Waikiki area. I mean, it makes sense. Who wants to pay those ridiculous $30 daily hotel parking fees, high gas prices, parking garage fees, car rental fees, and overpriced ride sharing fees? I mean, if you have too, then hey.... you gotta do it. But, I'm always trying to save some money, and this saved me a ton! The buses are prompt and they run quite frequently. They keep the inside and clean and I didn't see trash at the bus stops. They have an adequate amount of bus stops, but not so many that it feels like you're stopping every second. They also have a few busses that run for 24 hours! The buses that don't run for 24 hours still start early and end late. My hotel was walking distance from Waikiki beach, but I was so grateful to be able to take this bus to other parts of town. If you're looking for an easy and convenient way to get around town that won't cost you an arm and a leg, I would highly recommend it! read more

TheBus - One of the bus stops near downtown Waikiki - Public Transportation Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

Deep in the ancient past, second half of the 20th century, I asked my sister if I could borrow her car to get from her place to Ala Moana beach. She said she needed the car and I should take "The Bus." That's what I thought I heard, and so I tried to look up the phone number in the Yellow Pages. I know I've lost all you youngsters already, but I feel I have to tell you this story as it is one of those anecdotes that give you a glimpse into how different local Hawai'ian subculture is compared to American Midwestern sensibilities. I couldn't find the number under public transportation so I turned to the White Pages (I'm not being racist, this a term from prehistoric Google searching), and couldn't find it under, bus, public bus, public transportation, Honolulu bus, Oahu bus, and when my sister walked in she exclaimed, in the tone of voice that said her brother is an idiot without saying that exactly out loud, "Rohan, it's under T, for, TheBus." That is so Local. Of course it's under T. So I called them on the telephone (ask your grandparents to explain what this means), and they told me which bus to take, where to wait for it, and how to get a discount card so I could use it all the time. Which is what I've done since, whenever I'm back. The drivers are great, the buses comfortable though usually the a.c. is too cold, and it's much easier to figure out now using Google maps set to public transportation using what is currently referred to as, a phone. But in the years since I first learned to take TheBus, the price has risen and all the discount passes have been discontinued. It's still more convenient to have the pass, but there's no real savings, and you have to go to one of handful of specific locations to buy the pass, you can't currently get one online so you have when you land. Somewhat ironically, the place I went to last time in Honolulu to get my TheBus pass was in Ala Moana mall, and I had to wait in line. I don't mind lines in Hawai'i like I do anywhere else in the U.S.A. because I know at the front of that line, when I finally get to a worker to take care of me, both the frontline workers and their supervisors will look like me. read more

Honolulu currently only has one major public transportation option being TheBus. TheBus services the entire island of Oahu and has extensive network of routes to just about all neighborhoods. Major routes along the central corridor of urban Honolulu are serviced with modern air conditioned buses and some are now electric powered. The fare structure is $2.75 for general one-way or $5.50 for a all day card and $70.00 for a monthly pass. There are discounts for seniors or students. The timing of buses is very good and typically 15, 30 or 60 minutes apart depending upon the specific route. Thebus is a great economical way for daily transportation or even as a visitor to the island. read more

It gets me from A to B- sometimes buses are cancelled- service is inconsistent- the worse part is that many people come on the bus with dirty clothes, reeking of urine or days without a bath- I do feel for people in such circumstances- however its very unpleasant to be in a confined area - and also the seats on the bus are made of fabric- so the filth and smell remains- read more

ADVENTURESOME ECONOMICAL RIDE TO WAIKIKI On this trip, I had arrived early in the afternoon, and I wanted to see what was going on in Chinatown & DT while heading towards Waikiki. I was really saddened by all the mom & pop store closures. Tents everywhere outside of Waikiki. From the airport on Line #20 Waikiki to my stop on Lewers Street, it took approximately 60 minutes. Our coach was clean and well ridden i.e. old. Obviously there were less buses running because of significantly lower ridership. With two small carry-on bags that fitted on our laps, it was not a problem boarding the coach. Would not recommend usage of TheBus with cumbersome oversized baggage. The bus operator has the authority to stop you from boarding. It's a matter of safety. On my return to the airport, I took a cab from the hotel. It was a lot more convenient and comfortable. Approximately $40 for the 20 minute ride late on a Wednesday evening. By TheBus it's $2.75 per person. Exact change only. TheBus is not meant for everyone who needs door to door service. read more

Been riding on TheBus for years. Since high school. Love how much easier it is these days with GPS. You just go to the maps app on iPhone and select the public transportation icon and it shows what busses you need to go on to get to where you need to. And has the times listed as well. I remember in HS when we had to ask every Bus driver for directions. read more

TheBus provides public transportation on Oahu. Our expectations for public transportation is US cities are fairly low. But times are changing. We are tourist on Oahu. TheBus provides passes. You can purchase and charge the passes at ABC stores, meaning almost everywhere in Honolulu. Some stores may not carry them. Did not check them all. Duh. The HEA-TheBus app provides a realtime map showing all stops when you zoom in. It allows you to route destinations and shows how long until the bus arrives at your stop. TheBus runs every few minutes in Honolulu and every 30 minutes in outlying area, including the North Shore. Some drivers drive for their passengers. Some drive a little jerky. None are terrible. Some buses are cleaner than others. Oahu rightly makes a big deal about hygiene related to Covid. As part of this, the buses could be cleaner. We use TheBus instead of renting a car when visiting Oahu. We like TheBus. Oahu is doing a good job with public transportation. read more

What's NOT to like about da BUS ? I usually ride a bicycle everywhere when I find myself in an URBAN environment, but HONOLULU 's different for me, as I don't exactly know where I'm going, AND I don't come here that often, AND I don't have access to a reasonably priced bike.....soooo.... It's THE BUS when in Hawaii's big city. Day pass for guys my age is 2 bucks, or that's what the drivers ask for.... 2 single dollar notes fed into the machine, and a DATED small slip of paper returned to be used til midnight ON THAT DAY, go anywhere.... it's a ticket, a transfer it's all y'all need, 2 bucks = VALUE No change anywhere, drivers handle no money. By and large, a cheerful helpful lot these BUS drivers. Having read some of the reviews which suggest otherwise, I'd pass along my experience: they are very good with directions and know where to transfer. helpful with mobility challenged riders. polite in most circumstances, even dealing with a WIDE RANGE of people with 'attitudes'. SAFE smooth comfortable starts and stops..... nice 'even' rides, not throwing passengers all over the place. Buses are relatively clean and tidy. Air con is INDUSTRIALLY efficient...I carry an extra 'merino' layer for longish journeys / as my old Texan friend used to say: "it's cold enough to hang meat in here". The BUS goes most everywhere y'all want on the island of OAHU, for a reasonable price, on a reasonable schedule, in a timely fashion. (remember it's a 'bus' , not yer personal UBER/LYFT, so allow ample time for a bit o' walking too, it's NOT door to door) NOT having to fight the ever worsening traffic, pay ever dearer 'expenses' i.e. parking, fuel. rentals.. etc.. is a BONUS. CONCLUSION: we are fans of 'THE BUS', when in Honolulu / Oahu/. FOUR stars. Recommended. read more

I tried to order my Holo card online. I never received it. To find out when I checked it, someone was using my card from the middle street bus station to downtown to Waikiki (#24 bus). It was stolen! How horrible for someone who works at the bus to steal other bus riders cards that they need for transportation! They should be fired. Whomever is supposed to be mailing out the Holo cards is using it for their own personal benefit and stealing money from people just trying to get their Holo card. I reported it stolen, deactivated the card and cancelled the stolen card from my Holo account. I didn't want the thief accessing my new Holo card. Get your Holo card in person at an authorized retailer like the Kalihi Transit Center, Foodland/Foodland Farms, Times Supermarket, or ABC Stores. I ended up getting my Holo card in person loaded somewhere else in my own hand at a retailer. Lots of creeps on the bus but it helps to have earphones or headphones, minding your own business but don't blast it too loud so you can hear your surroundings and the stops. Most bus drivers are good, they give me the paper day pass pretty fast when I need to use the bus for errands or appointments for the day. It's convenient most of the time but they are late or miss stops depending on the bus driver. The ones that have been on the job longer know to check and look at every stop, some newer ones just don't care as much. Just stay alert, watch your surroundings at all times and protect your belongings. The one day pass costs $5.50 for adults, one way is $2.25 for adults and monthly passes are $70. Masks are mandatory on the bus and must cover your nose and mouth. It gets crowded especially before and after work hours. But overall, it's a pretty good system of transportation. I miss the 52 circle island bus, it was a great way to explore the North Shore then go back to Ala Moana Center on one bus route. I'm going to try reload it in person in case anything doesn't work right with the website. In the early 1990s to 2000s, it was a good mode of transportation. Safe, lots of students and came often. But there's negatives with homeless and those with mental health issues on the bus and creeps but I sit closer to the bus driver the later at night it is. While during rush hour besides standing most of the time, crowded and tiring but gets you around in air conditioning. Sometimes changes aren't always for the better especially when they weren't ready for the Holo card with atm like dispensers for the cards and to be able to refill them at bus stops like they have for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), AC Transit, Muni and MTA in New York City. I see a mess coming for the bus. Keep cash in hand, just in case your Holo card doesn't work. I'll update this review when I start using the Holo card more often. read more

I actually took The Bus 20 from Hilton Village to Aloha stadium yesterday and found the experience a bit stressful because the route is about 1hour long. The local driver also got into a shouting match with a person he did not pick up because of his chair. Additionally, The bus driver and I disagree on the Senior rate price (per your website) as he stated that I should have a picture ID per Hawaii State and I questioned his statement because there is only one Federal Government in the US and all seniors have the same Federal Medicare Card. On the way home from Aloha stadium, we took another Bus (42) that went thru the Dillingam route and he was so friendly, he just accepted my Federal Senior Medicare Card as proof of the Senior bus rate.m without the argument. That bus ride took 70 minutes as it was around 230pm and my wife got car sick as the ride was bumpy and loud while the bus air was super chilly. The crashing sound of glass and metal was constant in my ears and the plastic chairs are super hard on my back. It was an experience for my first time but the message to know is that for short trips, the bus is the way to go. For longer trips, be prepare for chilly air conditioned air, loud metal and glass crashing noise and back wrenching chairs. read more

And anyway WHY did they change the system???! Paper passes were fine! Stop wasting tax payer $ ! We're in a pandemic!! Save it for later!! Or not at all!! C'mon use some common sense. 2nd time in 2 days....the Bus driver cant be bothered to stop at DESIGNATED bus stop. I had to wait 30 minutes for next bus.

The bus drivers were not very friendly nor helpful, given that those were very needed since it is our first time boarding a bus in a long while. We took the wrong bus because of this and needed to pay again for the transfer ($11 for five), at least supposedly. None of the bus drivers spoke fluent English. The first one was unclear with where to go and was misguiding. The second driver dismissed us entirely and was really rude before leaving the bus unattended for ten minutes. She wouldn't say a word to help us and didn't take her job seriously at all. At least we didn't have to pay the $11 again since she didn't care about it. read more

Like any other public transportation system, TheBus has its pros and cons. And yes, it can be a bit ghetto and creepy at times taking it. Still, it is a good service that serves Oahu well for the most part. When I was living in Honolulu, I was well acquainted with TheBus since I took it on my way to school during my middle and high school years. It has gotten better over the years. There have been a lot of good additions like the express (Route A, C and E) buses which helps you get to a location quicker than the local buses. Also, there are a lot more buses that run in certain neighborhoods that serve as feeder buses for the main bus lines. For instance, the new 9S route which serves Palolo only as a feeder for the regular route 9 that goes from Kaimuki to Pearl Harbor. In my neighborhood, I have noticed a lot of the routes have changed. When did route 2 start going to KCC? I like these changes because they better serve areas that used to not have much service. The vibrant Kapahulu Ave corridor has more service than it did before. Though there have been route improvements, the main issue with taking buses on Oahu are that they are slow. Taking TheBus to and from the North Shore is pretty much an all day affair. Kapiolani Ave is just as slow as ever. If you need to get to east Honolulu, take one of the buses on King St instead for a quicker commute. And some bus stops in urban Honolulu are too close to each other. Time adds up as buses constantly make stops. I think they can space the stops to be a little farther away. Though I think senior citizen riders would object to this. Overall, TheBus is a good bus system. It serves Oahu fine, but I wish the city of Honolulu would do something more to fix the traffic issue on the island. Traffic definitely affects the effectiveness of mass transit. read more

I live in Pacific Palisades, Pearl City, Hawaii. The bus in my area comes once per hour. After waiting for 20 minutes on numerous occasions, I often find that the bus must have arrived early, causing me to miss it. The bus is either early or late, and even the app predicting its arrival is unreliable. I know that the buses wait at the top of Palisades to switch drivers at a few stops. While the drivers are eager to end their shifts, they must ensure they fulfill their responsibilities properly. The buses are also very dirty, even during the COVID shutdowns when cleanliness should have been a priority. If you cannot perform your job correctly, where is your dignity as an organization? You could learn a lot from the German, Swiss, and Japanese on how to do it right. read more

Having grown up in Honolulu - I've been riding theBus, since before the city took it over in 1972.......I remember when it was privately owned by the Weinberg organization. Simply put- the bus service isn't as good as it used to be in the 1970's and 1980's. A lot of the decline is due to how the system is managed. On June 30, Honolulu Rail will open its first segment from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium. Rail service is only to be offered from 6 am to 7 pm- with no announcement of what options are available after 7 pm at night. Local bus 40 and 42, each run once an hour and so, I guess that's it........ It's very possible to get stranded after 7 pm with a long wait for a local ( stop every block) bus. So sad......... Outside of Rail........many lines that used to run every 20 minutes, now run every hour in metropolitan Honolulu. TheBus- also doesn't print paper maps and guides - which makes the system harder to use and more confusing.......... The lack of good public transportation- makes Honolulu less desirable as a place to visit - compared to cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Springs and San Juan............. the cutbacks in service sine 2010 - when Rail started being constructed - are just so sad........ read more

I'm a professional middle-aged woman who's never owned a car, because I've used public transportation everywhere I've lived - NYC, DC, Boston, Taipei, Hong Kong, etc. I've been taking the bus in Honolulu for nearly 9 years now, and while I can afford to buy a car, I've tried my hardest to stick to the bus and biki. But the RUDE and LATE DRIVERS are such a problem that I'm ready to ditch the bus and finally buy a car. I've forgiven the drivers for passing my stop (he claimed that the bus doesn't stop there, even though I get off that bus at that stop every single day and it's clearly listed on the bus stop sign), not letting me on with a small rolling suitcase to get to the airport (the bus was nearly empty), never being on schedule, making me late for everything. Today a bus that is always 10 minutes late showed up a few minutes before its scheduled time, so I ran towards the stop when I saw it coming and stood in front of the bus, waving for it to stop (there was no traffic). The driver waved me off. I then ran as fast as I could to the next stop (only a couple of blocks ahead), but the driver sped past me and drove off before I could get there. In 50+ years of taking buses all over the world, I've NEVER dealt with bus drivers as heartless as those here. Goodbye, The Bus! read more

The Bus was actually not too bad. As a non-local it was pretty easy to use. Most of the bus drivers were helpful in getting me around the island, I did have one that was an asshole though, couldn't believe it. The bus goes around the whole island (with transfers of course). You can reach all the tourist spots for cheap fare, a one time ride with one transfer for $2.75 or the wiser choice with an all day bus pass at about $5. All day is usually honored from midnight to 3am depending on the bus, according to the bus drivers I spoke to. Also of course since the bus makes all the stops, it will take you a little bit longer to get around. I actually don't mind and really like taking public transportation when I'm out of town, it contributes to the whole experience of getting to know the place you're newly visiting. read more

Although the bus fare raised to $5.50, only to transfer just once, the proposal for an all day pass with unlimited transfers is a pretty good deal the bus system can offer. With many different buses to take, and express buses that'll take many home the same amount of time as if I drove, I rate our public bus transportation one of the best in the nation because it's cleaner, safer, friendlier and efficient than other states. Although sometimes homeless get on, the bus is basically safe to ride where I want to go. I haven't rode the bus much since decades ago, but as I decided to ride it today, it brings back fond memories of my younger middle and high school days of catching the bus, talking to the regulars that caught the bus with me after school. I used to watch as the old men that got on from fort street mall mingle with each other, like a live soap opera and used to chat with them as well. Some don't look all there, but at that time they were harmless and interesting to talk to during those days. I often wonder what happened to them all. While riding the bus after all these years I notice how it's still the same being very cold, seeing friends still chattimg on the bus and being able to look at the scenery, but how it also changed as others as well as myself are on social media instead, and how the technology on the bus advance with screens and automated voices are to notify people of each stop. They even have an app to show when it will arrive. If you're visiting oahu, this is the cheapest transportation you can find that'll take you almost anywhere. Although there may be a longer wait time than driving, this is the next best way to tour around town or circle island instead of a rental car. read more

The Bus driver 110 that drove the route 567 to Ewa at noon on Monday, October 10 is a super aggressive driver. I was in front of the bus and was driving the speed limit. Apparently, the driver didn't like the fact that I was only driving the speed limit and rode so close on my bumper, that if I would've braked hard, he/she would have hit me. It was unnerving for me to be in a small car in front of such a big bus. I wasn't going to speed just to make the driver stop tailgating me. I feel sorry for the passengers on the bus whose safety is at risk, because the driver thinks they can play chicken with a tiny car. read more
