Lots of automation since I rode the Bus. Voice from a speaker announced each stop. I notice most people board with the HOLO card. Otherwise, it's $3.00 or $1.25 for seniors. There's also a price for teens. Mixed variety of people. There's a section in front that the driver opens up for someone on a wheelchair. Clean interior with moderate air conditioning. The driver I've encountered have been cordial though always with a serous look. read more

Some observations on riding TheBus: When entering a bus with more than half the seats filled, you might notice a natural human tendency for everyone to first take a seat all to themselves. As the bus continues to fill, another common sight is that a fairly large percentage of folks seem to be reserving the double seats for their own use, either by sitting on the aisle side of the seat, or by sitting on the inner side but seeming to block the aisle side with their belongings. Either way, this appears to signal that they're not inviting others to sit next to them. And most seasoned passengers seem to read these behaviors for what they appear to be. Some remain standing even when there are otherwise open aisle seats, making it difficult for newly boarding passengers to navigate around them, especially when those standing choose to do so while blocking the exits. Speaking of "exits," many or most buses have the type of rear doors with yellow strips on both sides, with some version of "Touch Here to Open Door." They also include an image of an open hand - seeming to mean you use your palms to push the doors open. On newer buses with the sensors still working properly, often you can use one finger to press on either yellow strip and the doors will open. But apparently because of abuse over time, for some doors you may need to use some force to cause the mechanism to work. Many ignore the yellow strips and the instructions and just attempt to push the doors open - which sometimes doesn't work at all - and then they may yell to the driver, "Back door!" My suggestion is to first wait for the green light over the exit doors to come on, then use your finger(s) to press on one of the yellow strips, but to smoothly switch to using more force, while still focusing on the yellow strips, if the mechanism has been desensitized. It should almost never be necessary to ignore the yellow strips and push on the doors themselves. read more

Wow. If I knew how mean these bus drivers were i would've just kept walking. good thing i wasnt in an emergency situation. I went for a little walk and thought maybe it might be fun to try taking the bus home for once . "I'm sure that they are up-to-date on their payment systems like literally every business on the island is". Then it was 15 minutes late, so I board just to find myself standing there like an idiot trying to tap my phone that i had just used to pay for groceries. and sad little unko sits there with a little grin on his face about it. No wonder I never use this service dude was a JERK. bus 950 makai side 6:13pm going into Hauula. Now I get to walk home on the wrong side of the road because you can't walk on both sides freely here and get honked at by crazy drivers. Thanks "Da Bus" i'll remember this the next time i consider stopping to let you merge back in. read more

Growing up my mom did not drive so we depended on The Bus to go places around Oahu and even in the military base. So this bus - At the time is cheap to ride and will get you places in a fully blasted air conditioned community public transportation. Riding the bus - It makes you appreciate how beautiful Oahu is. It takes you to routes you do not know existed LOL because being in a car its totally different. The Bus drivers are friendly and very helpful towards the riders. It can get uneasy when certain riders are in (homeless, abrupt riders etc) it can be a smell or just the surroundings. But riding this bus is an experience. They offer different routes depending on what # is the bus. This bus can also take you to North Shore which can be a ride but its CHEAP to get there. You do not need to worry about parking fees to park your car or finding a parking spot to park your car. This bus will do routes at the airport or swap meet as well. This ia very popular option for the Airport. Its CHEAP. HOLO cards are the best way to use the bus system. Its cheaper - The Bus do not bus transfers - Be mindful. HOLO cards are bus passes with unlimited rides per day or weekly I think. Its the best way to use The Bus if you are in the island for many days IMO. IMO The Bus is one of the best public transportation I have used - And I have used a few in many states. From Metro card (subway systems) to MUNI cable bus to LYNX bus. I still like The Bus system out of all. read more

Two weeks ago I rode the #65 route from Ala Moana Center to Ahuimanu on Windward side and back to Ala Moana Center. Best public transportation in the country for the price you pay whether it's a HoloHolo Card (usable for The Rail too) or just pay for each ride. 1. Alot of routes for convenience 2. Easy apps to find bus time departures/arrivals, location of stops 3. Pleasant and patient drivers 4. In-bus cameras for security 5. Air conditioning 6. Recorded voiceover is loud enough to hear the announcement of each stop cross streets and/or specific venue 7. Back door of bus is a simple TAP (read the instructions on the door) and doors opens - some people think it's the old busses where you gotta push hard, but these ones no need. Just tap lightly 8. Bus drivers at night will actually "scan" the bus stops with their headlights to make sure people who aren't paying attention waiting at bus stop and if no one gets up or no one there they don't have to come to a complete stop which saves time for all us riders 9. Easy tap of HoloHolo prepaid bus pass upon entering bus or there's another separate place if you're paying with cash - the Bus does NOT give change nor takes credit cards yet. These drivers are on a schedule. If alot of riders are not prepared with passes or payment it delays the bus getting to next stop. If you have alot of riders who aren't prepared it can delay the driver and make him or her late. If there are elderly who need time to get down the aisle safely before the driver pulls away from the curb, that delays too. If there are wheelchair riders who need to be strapped down for safety and/or deploy the bus ramp, or visitors asking a lot of questions before boarding, more delays. Just saying because I witnessed this and then poor driver got yelled at by another rider for "being late." He said "what...the bus when break down? Hah?" Driver was polite and said nothing - probably didn't want to delay route even more by answering lol I also had to keep in mind with all the construction going on both day and night especially around Dillingham due to The Rail and over all glut of traffic due to so many cars on the road it can delay routes even more. Also routes will change due to parades, marathons, marches. Sometimes in Waikiki the Bus cannot stop at regular stop due to a parade, so the visitors gotta lug their suitcases a few blocks. Despite all the challenges and changes the Bus must navigate through, thanks to the drivers and dispatchers, i commend them all for making it a pleasant experience getting me safely to my destination. Mahalo! read more

The bus is a "trip". I don't enjoy driving on crowded roads or finding parking, so I decided to try getting a bus pass on this visit to Honolulu. I got a 3-day pass for $22 at the 7-11. (You have to pay cash). The pass gets you anywhere you want to go with unlimited transfers. So, it helps if you have a PhD in logistics to figure out the routes. I ended up studying routes for a long time and developed paths. While I had a bus stop right outside my house, I had to walk 1/2 mile to get to a stop that was useful. Anyway, you can call for help and the staff is friendly and helpful. The bus drivers are super helpful and patient. The buses are remarkably clean and comfortable (if you are lucky to get a seat). Talking on the phone on the bus is discouraged, which I was happy about. Food or drinks are discouraged as well. So I took several trips. It was fun to see the people, a combination of locals and tourists, trying to get somewhere. So travel is slooooow. The bus stops about every block. People are slow to have their fares ready, but the drivers are kind. I got where I needed to be (downtown Honolulu) and didn't have to find parking! Note: if you know where you want to get off, be sure to pull the cord, otherwise the driver might not stop. I passed one stop and ended up walking back. There is a web page on TheBus site that tells tourist how to navigate specific attractions. The site helped me travel to Queen Emma's Summer Palace. I never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a bus and saw some interesting sites that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. If you've got plenty of time, I recommend TheBus. read more

TheBus is the public bus transportation system in Oahu. You can pay in cash which is $3 per ride for adults with a daily cap of $7.50 per day. If you're planning to be in the area for longer, you can purchase a 7 day pass, a month pass, or even an annual pass. You can buy one of those at any ABC Store (cash only) or you can buy a HOLO card and load money onto it. When I've taken the bus during my stays in Oahu, the busses have come on time and have been pretty convenient especially when traveling around the Waikiki area. The other nice thing about TheBus is that you can take the bus from Waikiki directly to Pearl Harbor so you can still visit without needing to rent a car. It's a nice alternative to the more expensive rideshare apps and it's pretty convenient around Waikiki. read more

Whatever you do, avoid the bus. I swear it shaves a year off your life every time you set foot on it and it's a trip back to 1954. They don't do transfers anymore. Idk since when bc it's been about 10 years since I've rode the bus and now I'm reminded why I don't do this to myself. So if you pay cash you have to pay $3 for each trip. Each way. There's no app like every other metropolitan city in the world. No apple tap to pay. No credit cards and no change given. What a rip off! They expect you to get a holoholo card but the only places to get a day pass are ABC stores in Waikīkī. Definitely not local oriented. You can buy a $2 holoholo card which you then add money to. Closest bus stop to my house is 1.5 miles away. I usually walk instead of the bus if I don't have my car available but today it's raining and I have a lunch date so I figured I'd take the bus. After finding out there's no transfers I'll be abstaining from the bus again. I might ride the rail once (if it ever opens) but other than that I refuse to put myself through the torture of public transit in HI. Every time I have to use any kind of public service in Hawai'i it reminds me why we can't and don't have nice things. read more

I'm 77 y.o. Kama'aina grandma. I ride TheBus only when I have to, like when I don't have the car, or finding parking would be nightmare, parking fees would break my budget, or the crazy Honolulu traffic congestion would be too stressful to negotiate. The Bus drivers I've encountered have been OK. Travel can be slow...but...it's not a car & carries a lot of people. My last ride a few weeks ago was not very pleasant...some very weird/obnoxious man/mental issues? talked loudly nonstop to the "air?" Or he was talking to me? He stood right smack in front of me (I was seated in the front of the bus, close to the driver) The driver ignored him. I didn't ask the man to be quiet because I'm a small female & he looked a good 10+" taller & 80 pounds heavier than me (way, way bigger than me)...he acted nuts so I wasn't going to antagonize him. I didn't want to move & lose my seat because The Bus was crowded, standing room only. I wouldn't do well standing because the bus lurches too often & if I had fallen, I would have been a bigger problem than the obnoxious man. So this experience wasn't blissful, for sure. 12/5/2022: The Bus is Oahu's lifeline for Locals and Peeps visiting the Island Of Oahu; without The Bus' fully operational infrastructure, life in Oahu would be difficult. Around 1993, The Bus charged fifty cents then, the fare increased to $1.00 by year, 2000; now, the fare is $3.00 plus, The Bus REMOVED the $7.00 DAY PASS and began utilizing what is called, "Holo Card." Regarding the "Holo Card," I discovered not ALL ABC Stores sells the "Holo Card": The "Holo Card" is sold at only the larger ABC Stores which I find inefficiently annoying! The "Holo Card" charges $7.50 plus, other fees amounting to roughly $11.00; however, the ABC Store Manager didn't explain the reasons for extraneous charges. I guess the extraneous charges will be returned to me or I'm SOL! In addition, The Bus' routes have drastically changed where I became strangely unfamiliar with the road changes and Oahu's building structures are ever increasing not knowing where anything is anymore . . . The landmarks I once knew all disappeared! read more

Today I was subjected to very severe and dangerous discrimination by the driver of The Bus #13. I am an EMS Animal Support recipient with disabilities. I have panic disorder and I am always with my dog. Of course, I also have a doctor's satifficate. Usually the drivers are very friendly and have accepted my service dog with no problem. For years. Today, however, I had a turnaround and had a very bad driver. I recently told him I was an EMS service dog and boarded the bus because the bus driver asks if you are a service animal. However, the driver tried to deny me a ride because I was not the dog in a pet carrier. I again told him It was a service animal and told the driver I had never been told such a thing before. The driver tried to deny me a ride, saying it was policy. He threatened to call the police and have me get off the bus if I did. I have been taking this bus with my dog to the bank for years and never had anyone say such a thing to me. He threatened to stop the bus and call the police. I had no problem with this, so I got on the bus, but the other passengers, angry that I had stopped the bus, started passing me, and the angry passengers got off the bus and deliberately attacked me as I was getting off and then disappeared To top it off, the remaining passengers screamed at me that I was a liar and continued to harass me for a long time. A big fat Hawaiian woman in particular harassed me intensely and repeatedly and loudly. Stressed out .I took this opportunity to continue to harass me to relieve her stress. The bus driver and the supervisor, who came later, intentionally turned his name tag inside out to hide his identity. The supervisor let me get off the bus, leaving me with such a shamelessly ignorant passenger who looked like a Hawaiian sumo wrestler. I informed the driver that I was a service animal before I got in. This driver used false information to deny me a ride. He then proceeded to humiliate me, anger the other passengers, and assault me. The verbal abuse escalated and even reached my dog. I absolutely will not tolerate such discriminatory behavior and false instructions. Other passengers should protest against the driver who mistakenly stopped the bus, not harass and assault me and other people with animal support. These people are just as heartless and shameless as the bus driver. I feel very unsafe because of what happened and I will never forgive the passengers who attacked me, nor the lying driver who let me off by mistake, nor the supervisor who came to deal with the situation. You will be judged by the law of karma. Dogs don't speak, but they know what happened. The passengers, the driver and the supervisor will never be forgiven for harassing this little animal. I leave everything to God. Both me and my dog are damaged to the bottom of our hearts and cannot recover from this. I cannot believe at the existence of these demons in Hawaii. read more

24 December 2020 Although my mother has her driver's license; she does not like getting on the highway. She is an island girl (Antigua, Caribbean) and is use to smaller roads. Before moving to Hawaii; she relied on the local bus services in Tampa, FL. It give her independence to go wherever and whenever she wanted. It was also a much small city so the routes were easy to learn. Since being on Oahu, she would rely on my brother and I if she needed to go to Honolulu or anywhere beyond our city limits. So, wanting to see the holiday decorations in Waikiki without having to deal with traffic or parking  AND wanting to get some familiarity with public transportation, we decided to take #TheBus. So, we walked to the stop nearest to our house and set out on our journey. Once the eastbound express bus arrived, we got on, asked for a day pass and paid the fee. Day pass allows unlimited rides to/from any routes, valid from 12:00 a.m. - 2:59 a.m. the following day (the times are what is posted on the website). - Day pass fee: adults $5.50; children $2.50 (there is also a different fee for seniors but I'm not sure what that is). - Bring singles and coins. *Keep in mind that bus drivers/machines do NOT give change. Masks are required and your nose and mouth must be covered. The few buses we go onto were fairly clean. They were not smelly (but we all had masks so who knows) and the passengers all seems alright, except for the one girl and one man (not riding together) who decided to prop their feet on the seat handles. The bus stops on the other hand were not all well maintained; some even had homeless persons sleeping in/under the sheds. There are a ton of stops so it's convenient for getting close to where you want to go. We did not have a specific location in mind so we got off when a mall/shopping location was announced. Which is another good thing - there are automated announcements of the stops & intersections. Overall it was not a bad experience. It was a sightseeing experience for me since I could view all the things I usually miss while driving and my mother got to experience the bus. It was also a learning experience for my nephew who is used to being driven everywhere. read more

Three years of use should have made the rules more inviting and less confusing, especially for nonlocals. The pandemic has made cashless fares a necessity. Most of the new buses have AC which helps make the ride very comfortable. The bus app provides accurate information on the buses arrival. Lately there's been a lot of people with excessive items with them as they enter the bus, luggages cards oversized wheelchairs and rolling walkers, that are full with personal items. This takes up to three to four seats sometimes for one person. I feel the person driving the bus should be the one to address these people with extra large luggages and baggage and oversized mobile assistance picking up extra seats. I peed my fair share to get a seat. To see one person taking up three or four seats just doesn't make sense while all others are standing up. I feel that if they're going to take up another seat or couple seats they should have to pay extra or not allowed. Because if that's the case, it's like the public is using the bus system for their house moves. Which is what it seems like. I can see a couple extra things yeah, but it's got team a little out of hand already. Other than that the bus system is awesome. It's fast it's reliable and you actually save money by riding the bus. I use the bus regularly as a mode of transport to and from work as well as for my other daily needs. I appreciate all that the good bus drivers do for us to take us where we need. A few disappointing points to note: The bus is usually late or early, more than it's on time. It's difficult to gauge whether I will get somewhere on time, even though I use an app like Google maps which tells real time updates on the incoming busses. I've missed multiple busses due to them being too early, resulting in me spending at this point upwards of a few hundred dollars in Uber fares. On the flip side, when I try to get to the bus with ample time they are more often than not late. And the bus can't take responsibility for this. There have been a few times where a bus driver straight up missed me and drove off while I was sitting inches away from the bus stop. Also resulting in costs incurred in Uber fares. *Some* bus drivers are straight up rude. I won't say anything about some of the customers because that's not really up to the company. Overall I appreciate having a mode of transport but they can make more effort to be more consistent. They can't help that there's traffic or something up with the roads that result in being late, or delays caused by too many people getting on and off, but they can at least make the effort to not miss someone because they were too early. read more

Why drive in rush hour traffic, you can be driven by a limosuine? "Fasi's Limo", as they say from the 80's(?) when Frank Fasi was our mayor. I may be biased because my bus goes straight on the freeway to downtown, but I feel so privileged being driven to and from work while half-napping, half-listening to music instead of getting a heart attack every time someone cuts me off. I like sitting in AC comfort instead of driving a car with no AC. While most people like to commute alone, I feel less lonely riding the bus as a social experience. I actually feel like part of the community. That is the experience with most commuters express buses. On the regular routes, the bus stops way too frequently, but goes where you need to go. Except for somewhere way out west in Ka'ena Point, you can take the bus pretty much everywhere on the island. Few all-day freeway express and local buses run from downtown to places like Aiea (54), Pearl City (53), Mililani (52), Waipahu (E), and Kapolei (C), so if you're willing to wait every 30-40 minutes, you can get to far away places faster where lots of people take public transit. If you're unlucky to take the slow local buses like the 1 or 2, they come super frequently so that if one is full, just wait a few more minutes and the next bus is most likely much less full. Like with anywhere, take precautions when you see someone dangerous. But I feel much, much safer than somewhere like San Francisco where I feel like someone can and will stab me at any second. It currently costs $2.75 per ride, or $5.50 for a day pass, no transfers (which are very much missed). Most commuters like me get the $70/mo bus pass, which is a deal compared to $100/mo parking in Kaka'ako. It's practically like Uber Pool with 40 other people, without the high cost. Try it sometime! read more
