Called to make a reservation for tomorrow. Val is 5 stars friendly efficient service with a sweet voice. Because I Called with only 1 day in advance the time I preferred was not available sadly -but that's okay. Lesson learned. Tips: Call 3 days ahead for better chance of time slot availability. Have your destination (s) location/ address ready before calling. Have a good attitude, the call center is doing their best to serve you. I was 9th in line for phone being answered and quickly jumped to 2nd in under 5 minutes. Not too shabby. 5 stars read more

I started taking handivan in September 2025 to my job program that's 6 months in Waikīkī from Hawaii Kai never had a problem coming to work drop me off 11 something which is good the only issue I have is yesterday when I was supposed to be pick up 4:30-5:00 I called cause I didn't see any info about the est time n was told my bus is still picking up people from 3:00 and 4:00 and if you don't see the ride time est by 5:15 call us back I call back again!! 5:20 still didn't see time than told me your taking cab should be here in 5 mins I said ok 5:40 still no show I call again and it was getting little darker and said mam we try to reach out to cab still no call back well call you back as soon as they do 20 mins later still no call I call back again and said we are still looking for cab so I asked them if they can cancel it for me and decide to take Lyft back home instead I notice 3 times I took it home before they came right on time early normally I had to wait 20 mins after 4:30 I'm only in the program Monday and Wednesday for 6 months they need to do better and knowning if they were going to be late should of schedule something quicker like they done in the past never had to wait that long for a cab smh read more

This service is invaluable to old folks like me! I need to get to the Waikiki Aquarium and back home two days a week I am a volunteer there. I am 86 with two knee replacements and I can't walk to the nearest busstop that would take me where I need to go and besides since the bus routes were stupidly and needlessly changed in August it takes me over an hour to get home now since I have longer wait times and have take 2 transfers. The Handi-Van drivers are so professional and caring for their riders they are just wonderful! Always cheerful and concerned for the well being of the riders whether they are traveling in a scooter, wheelchair, crutches or like me still able to get around. I love the Handi-Van drivers and I always try to give a small treat to show my deep appreciation! God Bless them all! read more

The computer system is down several times in a row, 1 hour waits and total frustration. I hate the drivers who don't help carry bags, then don't work for an elderly and disabled transportation service if you don't want to help. I hate drivers with attitude. We pay you to drive us, so act like it. read more

Handivan service sucks! They are constantly late. There are times that I wait 1 hour. Sometimes they are scrambling to get a van for passengers. Most times, I don't have a ride to my destination! I call a couple days in advanced. When the day comes, they are scrambling! It is frustrating! I end up taking the damn bus to my destination! Ther excuse is always, "A van has not been scheduled. Dispatch is working on it. We don't know how long it'll be, etc." WTH! I make my reservation a day or 2 ahead read more

The Handi-Van sucks! I don't even want to give them one star!!! I work at an adult daycare & they're constantly late picking people up at the end of the day. They don't call to let the person they're scheduled to pick know that they're running late or that they don't currently have a driver until I call them and that's what they tell me! The work with the TheCab & even still, I get told that they're still looking for a driver! read more

We've been using HandiVan for a few months now. I must say, we are so thankful for this service! This has made transportation so much easier and stress free! We were able to schedule an in person interview with ease. They even arranged for our ride to and from the eligibility office at NO charge to us! Amazing! All we needed to bring was a list of current medications, health conditions, doctor, and identification. The interview was straightforward. They just determined whether or not if Jo could use the regular city bus. Or if it was a need to use the HandiVan. Upon being approved for HandiVan, we were told that this is a shared transportation service. That explains the 30 min window for pickups. It allows the driver time to grab other riders in addition to us. (Keep in mind that sometimes you may be the only passenger during your ride.) We have no problem with this. We'd gladly wait 30 min than pay a ridiculous price for the cab. We only pay $2 (or coupon) each trip. For the most part, all of our past rides have been on time as scheduled. No complaints on our end. Let's talk about the staff. Oh boy, we love them! From customer service to the drivers, we've always been treated professionally. Let me tell you something, these staff members are so warm and patient. They know how to deal with a large variety of folks. Isn't that awesome? Whenever we're boarding the van, they are so kind and helpful. My elderly loved one, Jo, is unable to walk up steps and can't balance well. The drivers allow Jo enough time to board safely using the lift. Seeing them in action really warms my heart. These people are such a huge help to us! Really! Also, the customer service staff is so understanding. I forgot to submit payment for one of our rides and I immediately called them. They didn't get upset or irritated. They simply instructed me to mail in the payment. We haven't been late to any of our doctors appointments. We always let the reservations department know what time we have to be at our destination. They factor that in and schedule us accordingly. In addition to that, Jo can bring the rollator with us and not worry about folding it up. The van is so spacious that we can leave it as is and they'll secure it. I also really love the fact that I can accompany Jo on the rides. I worry about Jo all the time because of the dementia so this really puts me at ease. And if we want any additional family/friends to come along, they just have to pay the fee. Isn't that wonderful? Because of this, we were able to do a family day at the zoo. It was really nice to go out together. All made possible with the HandiVan If you or a loved one has trouble accessing and using the regular public city bus, I highly recommend this HandiVan service! It has been one of the best choices we've made since Jo came out of the nursing home for physical therapy. Thank you HandiVan for all that you do for our family. Without you, getting around would be such a hassle. read more

Alright, so i wasn't going to post this because i thought this situation could get resolved if i contacted these guys through email but they did absolutely NOTHING after a month of waiting! Around11am on Sunday 4/9 at New hope oahu Sand Island, one of the drivers was being ridiculously reckless and almost backed into my truck while i was dropping off my grandma. He kept backing up and never stop and he clearly knew i was right behind him and was ridiculously impatient while my grandma was getting out the truck! (Mind you he has more than enough space to pull forward and go the way he's supposed to go. It's a one way in, one way out) I couldnt reverse for fear that my grandma would hurt hurself getting out and because there were cars behind me! What does he expect me to do, he couldve waited! It was raining as well so the ground was wet, my grandma could have slipped and fell if i reversed. So i honked my horn and held it down until he finally stopped. He then jumped out and started yelling and cussing at me (the driver) and my mother in law and grandmother and my bf for not moving when we clearly couldnt. How can a GROWN man yell at three women when he's clearly in the wrong! He continuously mouthed off to us and was calling us out IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH and especially on EASTER SUNDAY! My grandmother could have seriously gotten hurt and he could've damaged my truck!!! Unreal, if he could act like this to us, i can't imagine how he treats his passengers and if that's the case i would absolutely not feel comfortable having my grandma or relative use the handivan or anybody else! Ridiculous and as we're turning around to find parking we're passing him and he still continuously yapped at us. Can't believe how unprofessional this guy is, SHAME on him, not a good look and i wouldnt be surprised if this isnt the first time an incident like this happened. Very prideful, unprofessional, and RECKLESS! It seemed as if he really was trying to play with us and try to get a reaction out of us...SAD read more

Handi-Van - 2019 Christmas Decorated HandiVan Very Festive! - Public Transportation Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

The first incident was when the driver was one hour late. There was pointing of fingers where the driver said dispatch never told her to pick me up after Foster Village in Salt Lake so she bypassed me and went to Palolo. The dispatch said they told her to pick me up, regardless, I waited one hour. The second incident happened when the driver was 1/2 hour late and started yelling at me. The third incident was when the dispatchers always say they are too busy to accommodate last minute changes. I always feel stressed calling to make reservations, there are always a zillion calls ahead of you and when you get through, they put you on hold and then tell you the dispatcher I hope that the dispatchers that day no to you for a ride to ER get treated the same way. Karma is a b**** read more

I wish I could give negative stars. I can't believe my hard earned tax dollars pay for this crappy service. In the eight months we are forced to use this inadequate service, they came on time 3 times. My patients use this service 3 times a week. They are not helpful or accommodating for any changes, they helped us out twice. The dispatcher is pathetic. We had a scheduled pick up for 4pm yesterday. The call center said they didn't have a van assigned for us (it was already 350pm). When I asked what was the approximate time they would know, the answer was "we don't know". I explained my patient was on a life support ventilator and oxygen, they call center did not care. Kept saying we don't know when you will picked up. I had to scramble to find an electrical outlet. Miraculous, I found one in the fire escape stairwell, next to a filthy pay phone. Thank you, Jesus. I told my boss to purchase our own van , so we don't have to put up with uncaring, discourteous people. May the dispatcher who has no compassion get the same treatment we have to endure. May she be on life support one day and some tells her she gotta wait for help. No Aloha whatsoever. Also dispatch alway tries to split up my two patients on life support. I wish my patients were on welfare, Medicaid/ quest patients don't have to put up with handivan, your tax dollar pays for private limo transport! read more

Handi-Van - Do wat we do! - Public Transportation Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

I know, I know sometimes we have to wait for a ride but for the most part they are pretty much on time and the drivers are very friendly and helpful, not to mention the ladies who answer the phones! Once a few months back I got the address wrong to where I was suppose to go, it was a very important meeting. So there I was stranded all the way out in Kailua, I needed to be in Kaneohe, I'm from Mililani and they send a another van to take me where I actually needed to be, thank you ladies! Then today, I forgot to call and schedule my usual ride to school, yes I'm working on a degree at my age, and they were nice enough to put me on the schedule for tomorrow morning. Thank you again! So yes, it's not a perfect system, they need more vans and more drivers but w/out them I wouldn't be able to get around or go to school. Mahalo for all your hard work and compassionate communication! read more

Been riding for seven years and I must say they're consistent. Consistent in being late to pickups, consistent in drop offs to appointments and church etc. and it seems the problems stem from scheduling. The vans are always packed instead of using more vans, the vans manifest makes no sense when the driver has four pickups at the same time at different parts of the island. A typical ride from Waipahu to Kaneohe at 1130 can include a twelve pick up at Moanalua and a twelve pickup in kalihi and a drop off in kalihi before finally heading to Kaneohe. I don't have any other options as well as many other ppl who are wheelchair bound. It's just supposed to be a convenient way for disabled to get around but it's rare to get anywhere on time. We already schedule rides 2hrs before scheduled appointments etc. but still end up 30-45 minutes late. It's ridiculous and the reason why I miss appointments or don't bother scheduling. Maybe once we have a mayor or the administration riding Handi-Van regularly then they'll give attention to the problems and fix what is a broken process. 11/13/2019 Had a 8:15am appointment from Waipahu to Kailua. When I scheduled transportation I was told they have a 6 am to get me there on time. Got out of my appointment at 10:15am waited for my 10:30a ride to the mall where I'd finally get something to eat and take my medication. 1045am called for an ETA and was told no van was assigned to me yet they're working on it. How? When I called reservations and was confirmed the day before. It's now 11:50a and still nothing. Yet they call themselves HANDI. Come on NOT SO HANDI-VAN get it together 12/5/2019 Had a van scheduled from dialysis home at 542pm. Handivan again missed the Half hour window. 627pm called for an ETA and without warning get a recording that system is down for routine maintenance. If it's routine then that would imply they knew it was coming up. So why the last few days when I called there was no recording or effort to inform the passengers? Instead just left wondering if and when the van will Logistics and communication continues to be major failures especially in the last couple of months. Van finally picks up at 632pm. Almost an hour late. They're consistent in the wrong areas. 12/7/2019 Van scheduled again 6pm to go home after five hour dialysis treatment. 638pm no van yet, no observation of the 30minute window. Going to keep logging the issues till somebody takes notice. No matter how many times I reach out to customer service nothing gets done. This needs to stop for those not just done with a dialysis treatment for how many hours, but also those who need to be back at a certain time for medication and other therapies and those who have only enough oxygen for a set amount of time 12/13/2019 Van scheduled three days ago for a 5pm pick up. Called at 5pm to get an ETA and I was told NO VAN HAD BEEN SCHEDULED YET. How? I called three days ago. Their reservationists confirmed 5pm pick up. Knowing they have a 30 minute I waited. 530pm the 30 minute window has expired. I call back for an ETA this time told it will be at least another 20minutes. So if I'm lucky they'll be just one hour late today. As you can see from this log they're consistently late. If your time is important to you then oh well. As they say life is short but even shorter with these guys. I don't get to go to the quarterly meetings to air grievances because it's always on dialysis days but if anyone would like to share these instances at the meeting be my guest. read more

I think having the Handi van service in Honolulu is very helpful. I have been riding the city bus. And I also think the bus service is helpful transportation as well. Much mahalo to the Handi van and the city bus employees. Karen Akagi read more

Handivan rider for about five years. The problems never get fixed it's always the same issues. For the most part the drivers are nice and professional. Most problems seem to involve logistics between dispatchers and schedulers. It's also very unfair we have a five minute grace period while they have thirty minutes. Yet many occasions you'll find yourself waiting an hour or more. Then no reason or apology is ever again. Instead everyone plays dumb like oh I don't know what happened. Needs lots of work. read more

Dispatcher is useless, every pick up was 45 minutes late. We end up being five minutes late and they just left. No one called to find out where we were at a huge mall. We thought they were just late and waited 45 minutes before we called to find out they left. They know the customer needs the service and they are in no rush to help. Dispatcher Karis threaten to hang up on me when I told her it was command sense to call someone if they weren't not out front. Would never recommend this service to anyone. Ruin our vacation! read more

After numerous times of late Handi-Van arriving [after the 30-minute window] one drive explained that there are approximately 5,000 customers being serviced by only 15-drivers. This results into either a code "NM" [Trip Not Made] or "MT" [Trip Made But Transported Late]. One can see at least 50-60 parked Handi-Vans parked at the Kalihi Transit Station, so why are there so few drivers? This driver also said that the dispatcher uses a computer program that does not take in consideration of how long it takes to pick-up a customer, and then drive to the next location to pick up the next customer. Instead, the computer schedules only a few minutes between pickups which automatically makes the waiting time between customers more than the 30-minute window. Therefore, why doesn't the dispatcher schedule realistic spacing between pickups instead of saying, "We do not have a 9:00 AM, but we do have a space at 9:03 AM." Obviously, the drivers cannot pick up a customer and drive to the next location in 3-minutes! read more

I like the handi-van but a 12pm pick up is now 1:15pm... My students need to be back at school before 2pm to go home. Again great service to the needy and friendly service by the bus driver... Maybe I gotta cut shorter time in the community and go areas near the school. I'll give a 3 or more once they're within the 5-10minute wait read more

The Hawaii Handivan is a sick joke. There are at least 75 parked Handivans at the Kalahi Transit Center that are never used. I suppose they don't want to spend money for drivers to use them even though they were given to them through the American disability Act for disable people on the island. Many times the Handivan exceed the 30-minute window and I finally had enough waiting an hour or more. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE to being this late. The schedule dispatcher tells a customer that they do not have a 9:00 van, but a 9:05 is available, so you wait and wait until the 30-minute window has expired, and wait again another 20-minutes waiting on the telephone. read more

The Handi-Van is a great service to a lot of people on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. I started with their service in 2011. In the beginning the service was pretty much on time. At the end of 2012.So many new people applied for service and were approved, that it made it almost impossible to answer all calls. They deserve five stars for their attempts at more on time service. I have experienced some wait time from time to time, but it takes a little effort on our part to find ways to improve a situation, instead of just complaining. They are always moving forward and it seems like it gets harder for them to make progress. They never give up trying. A life saving service for many on this island Here it is 2015 and I am still alive and riding the Handi-Van. I still give them a lot of credit in trying to do the right thing. It seems that before they can dig out of the hole, it fills with water and the task gets tougher. I wish I had at least one good idea to give them, but I don't and I do need their service, and I make early appointments and allow plenty of time to handle my business before I go home. I do know that they never tell a rider that they are sorry but they have no ride for them. They do their best, with what they have, to get you where you need to go. Being more patient takes some getting used to as we get older or diabled. We have to make use of what is available to us. Plan to go a couple of hours early maybe 3, but you can use your alone time to just relax and enjoy the time you have once you are at your location. I can say that I have only been late 1 time. I am ready 15 minutes before my pickup time and waiting at the stop instead of in my apartment? Then give them 30 minutes to get there. Because they know this, they have picked me up early many times. If my appointment or shopping should last an hour or more I add an extra 2 hours before pickup. I am tired on the days I am gone all day, but I try to give myself a day in between my van rides. Most of all we need to show respect the drivers. They are trying to follow the schedule they have been given, and would like nothing more than get each person were they need to go. They transport many riders that need a lot of extra time to get them on the van and lock down their wheel chairs. Only one person is taking care of all these riders and they each have only have 2 legs and arms. They don't act like it is a bother to pick up any rider. read more
