Honolulu has a very good public transportation system already, affectionately known to locals as Da Bus. It can go anywhere on Oahu and you can get to many places island wide with one or two bus routes. As with public transit, it takes a longer time versus driving a car. Still, it's way cheaper!
I've already filed a review for The Bus / Oahu Transit Services many moons ago, so this review is for the actual Kalihi Transit Center, where the bus facility is located and where you can buy your monthly bus pass, disability bus pass, yearly bus pass, if 7-Eleven stops selling them. I've been here several times, either to transfer buses or buy a monthly bus pass. The most recent transaction was the monthly bus pass, as I needed one after returning from vacation on the mainland USA. It's great to have the Kalihi Transit Center so close to the Honolulu international airport (take route 31), so you can buy whatever transit pass you could ever need for your lifestyle and needs. This Kalihi bus facility is basically where all the buses come and park during the overnight hours, I'm thinking. It also has their maintenance arm here and pretty much anything and everything that The Bus provides. It's a one stop shop and transfer station for buses going either west / north or east bound from urban Honolulu. It's usually no more than 5-10 minutes wait for your connection here, depending on which route you are trying to catch. Some routes don't pass through the transit center, so you need to pay attention.
The Kalihi Transit Center is located on the border of Kalihi and the Honolulu international airport commercial area underneath H-1 westbound, at 601 Middle Street. It's easy to spot whether you're coming or going from N Nimitz Highway. I don't know if there is a facility within the transit facility for a park and ride, but I doubt it, so parking here is probably non existent. It's strictly a commuter terminal for daily trips on the public transit network within the island of Oahu. Admission here is usually paid bus fare, if you're not buying anything else. $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for children up to age 12 - one way fare. For y'all who need annual or monthly bus passes, $60 for a monthly pass is what most adults use. The senior pass is probably reduced. I wouldn't know, since I'm not there yet - age wise. For the transactions inside the bus pass office, they accept major credit cards, which is always a great thing. Whenever I don't travel to far away destinations, I take the bus from home to work, and anywhere else to go and have a fun time: yelp or otherwise.
It's very economical versus driving a car. Only thing is waiting for the bus can be annoying and frustrating at times, but the savings really does add up! The Kalihi transit terminal here at Middle Street is very large and multiple routes come through here. It's open air, so that's basically air conditioning right there. There's no free wifi that I can speak of, which is a major drag. However, getting to your final destination quicker can get you online or wherever you need to be faster. Random people are here at all times of the day and night, since it is public. Pretty sure there may be a restroom around, but I have not needed it yet, so I wouldn't know. The wait areas for the general public are pretty clean and generally safe during the daylight hours, unless you get someone bothering you.
Still, it's very good to have a reliable transportation system here at the city and county of Honolulu. While sitting in traffic sucks a lot, being on the bus may be better. At least you're not driving and having to worry about other cars on the road. I've been known to sleep on the bus during my commutes and that's great! Way better than on the wheel, that's for sure. 5 stars for the commuting and a great way to get your bus passes, if you are near the area. And definitely come here when 7-Eleven doesn't sell them anymore for the month.
