I've been eyeing this place on Solano Ave. and finally, I got to try it with one of my friends. We almost missed it, locked into conversation. Inventive chocolate flavor combinations and shapes. We had just eaten cuppies at Love at First Bite so I was pretty conservative in that I chose only 2 chocolates - rosemary dark chocolate in the shape of a leaf, dusted with shimmery green color and tamarind and orange in dark chocolate in the shape of buddha. I was pretty sure I knew all the interesting places along Solano Ave. I was wrong; sometimes you need an insider to point out small interesting spots. A recent monthly Yelp Hood Hunters led me here. The truffles are not overly sweet; the smooth fillings complement the hard shells. I usually buy just one to two, because despite all my good intentions, it seem that I eat whatever I purchase before I'm even in the car. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get especially when they are so pretty looking that you almost want to buy based on the exterior appearance vs. the interior flavor. But since they're for eating, I had to look past the outside and pick the flavors on the inside I would most likely enjoy. So we did the 12 piece for $20 box where we picked anything ranging from the plain square salted caramel to the tamarind mango encased in a chocolate buddha shell. I finally stopped at the shop to buy a box of chocolates for a gift exchange. They offer several very unique flavors. After discussing with the salesperson the box offerings, I decided on the $20 box. You can choose any flavors you want, as long as they all fit in the box. With that in mind, I was dead set in filling my box to the maximum capacity. I chose all the unique flavors, then the more common flavors. I must have pushed it to the limit, as I believe I had 13 pieces. Not to leave my sweet tooth left out, I also ordered the Dulce de Leche bonbon for myself. Very savory and rich. The chocolate lingered in my mouth until I swallowed it. Happily, I left the store. Hopefully the person who chose my gift liked the bonbons as I did. read more

If there really is a heaven, this is what it would look like. Granted, this place is small, but the chocolate that's available is SO amazing! Good quality stuff! There are a variety of chocolate bars (like San Francisco brand, Tcho!), chocolate bark with nuts, and truffles! Sometimes after work, I'll stop by here and buy one truffle to reward myself! :) The absolute BEST thing here though is the sipping chocolate!! OH. MY. GOODNESS. It's orgasmic!!!!! It's like drinking a melted down dark chocolate bar!! It's rich, so I would say that a little bit goes a long way. The sipping chocolate is definitely NOT hot chocolate, at least not the crappy stuff that's in the grocery stores. Once you take that first sip, you'll never want to drink packaged hot chocolate again! The chocolate is delicious. If it's all organic, I will not complain about the prices(!). However, I'm not giving 5 stars for two reasons: firstly, I had to return the Cardamom flavored chocolate bar in exchange for another flavor that wasn't so disappointing. There wasn't a trace of Cardamom detectable--yet, the lady helping me was kind enough to let me choose another bar. Secondly--and that's a big spoiler--, their packaging sucks big time. I bought 3 packs of 24 pieces at a whopping $69 each and they crammed it in a tiny box that made me wonder if there were actually 24 pieces in it. In addition, the boxes were stored upright in a bag and of course, the bonbons fell onto each other--not laying in a mold--, creating an ugly appearance: pieces not holding up and chipping off, rubbing up on one another. The package was too small, the padded plastic foil was too small too, the cheap copy of a label, the overall cheap appearance--I was utterly disappointed and I'm kind of ashamed to give those boxes as Christmas gifts. Wrapping them into paper, the sharp edges ripped the paper in the corners. Terrible. If they don't improve their packaging, I'm not buying there again. read more

This is such an amazing chocolate shop! They source only fair trade chocolate, they buy from specialty chocolatiers acrosss the globe and they make their own chocolate confections. Everything I have purchased there is delicious! I brought dessert for a party I was going to and made a chocolate charcuterie board-everybody loved it (see picture). Yes, I'm one of "those" people...I use YELP but have never reviewed. But, I stumbled upon a small jewel box of a store today and I just HAVE to write this review! They have so much chocolate and Not just ANY chocolate- but handmade truffles and bars. They said they only use organic and fair trade - which is really important to me. So here it goes: The Xocolate Bar, to my surprise, has been at this location for 11 years - woah!?! Found out they are a woman owned business-Malena came out of the kitchen to say hello, and Sidney(?) answered all my questions-very knowledgeable and friendly. I was offered several samples-little pieces of art. With unique flavor combinations- there's something for everyone; and not just dark chocolate, but milk and white chocolate (which I usually don't care for but I LOVED the passionfruit truffle!) $2. ea. -fair considering the high quality. Must try: the OMG bar, WOW! The space was clean, bright and well organized. Each brand had little information cards about the product and I liked that. Chocolate seems like it is a lot like wine, all very different tastes, so I'm excited about learning more. I signed up for their free tasting this weekend! Bottom line: For foodies and non-foodies. I am always proud to bring their truffles to friends who live outside of Berkeley. Really creative presentation and unbeatable quality. I was most recently thrilled by their 2009 Oscars series, of which the truffles in honor of Vicky Christina Barcelona and Milk are really award-winning on their own! I really recommend them! Entering into the realm of white chocolate, which I rarely do, I also enjoyed the pasisonfruit heart and the spiced chai. Received a coupon for a free truffle forwarded in their newsletter from a friend. Chocolate fanatic as I am, I had to check it out. Located on charming Solano, Xocolate was easy to find. At first glance, I was surprised at how tiny the space was. But then I got lost in all the chocolate and truffles and bars and gelato that it held. Everything was so pretty with the iridescent colored dust and fantastic (sometimes wild) molds. There's a lot of stuff in there! I came for the chocolate, so steering myself away from the freezer case, I chose the Rosemary Truffle and the Chile Pyramid. I also got a 4 oz sipping chocolate with a lavender flavor drop. We sat outside and ate and sipped. The Rosemary Truffle was very pungent. My accompanying friend thought it was too strong and wanted more chocolate taste. Though the Rosemary was very present, I thought that it was yummy, especially for Rosemary lovers. And I'd never seen a Rosemary truffle before. The Chile Pyramid was okay. The ganache wasn't as creamy as expected, and the truffle itself didn't have much flavor. However, the chile POW at the end was wonderful. The sipping chocolate was RICH (as it should be). It also came in the 8 oz size, but I barely made it through 1 oz of my cup! I couldn't taste any of the lavender drop, either. The owner and chocolatier was soo sweet. She answered all of my many questions eagerly and genuinely. Her and her partner have some incredibly unique options. This is my happy place. My life-is-getting-too-heavy place. I come with a dear friend (accountability buddy) and we spend too long browsing and oooohing and ahhhing and smelling and dreaming. Our trip today was balm for the tongue and the soul. Before I found this place, I thought I didn't like chocolate. Had never cared for it as a kid, in desserts. It seemed very one-note and heavy and boring. I still remember my first polite taste of the sipping chocolate - my knees went weak and I got lightheaded. Love at first sip. I visit for holidays, for gifts, for some me-time. Today was sorely needed, and delivered spectacularly as usual. So there we were, wandering down Solano Avenue on the day after Thanksgiving. I know, I know, some call the day "Black Friday" because the feast moves from turkey'n cranberries to blatant conspicuous consumption on that day. But not for us. The Friday after Thanksgiving is our "burn the calories" day. Doesn't always work...but we try, we try. So there we were, having hiked over to Solano on Shank's Mare. Stopped at Pegasus Books...a feast for the eyes without being truly "eye candy." Wandered down the hill...to...what's this? A light burning brightly in the little chocolate shop. Cold evening but...no lines. Dashed in for a (small) cuppa sipping chocolate. One cup apiece. (There are things that I will *not* share, chocolate being one of them.) Sat on the bench out in front. Watched the world go by while visions of sugar plums slid effortlessly down our throats. Good stuff, this sipping chocolate. Good company. Good ambience. I moved to the east coast a few years ago and I still miss this place. One time I came in and there was a fennel truffle on offer. I'm not a big fennel/licorice fan, but I was intrigued so I asked about it. Yeah, the chocolate guy said, there was a big crop of fennel just growing wild in our backyard so I thought I'd experiment. It's true, in CA you get these absolute thickets of feathery fennel growing wild in the spring. Beautiful-looking; nasty-smelling (unless you like licorice). I had to try! Surprisingly, I really liked it - one of those things where a flavor I'm not crazy about in its own makes a great combination with something else. A little chocolate buddha led me into this store after I picked him up in the Pasta Shop. His golden buddha friends welcomed me with open arms and hearty belly laughs--bellies filled with tamarind mango ganache. ;) The masterfully blended handmade bonbons (cherry hibiscus, fig, and chai spice) are elegant and balanced. Mayan calendars and Aztec shields line the walls. I love the honey cardamom vanilla gelato; tastes just like homemade ice cream, without that extra 40 minutes of churning. Offerings change every week, so there's always something new. ...Did I mention the caramelized cinnamon hot chocolate? Comfort in a cup. Everything in the store is divine, but what impresses me most about The Xocolate Bar is their use of local ingredients and fair trade chocolates, biodegradable packaging, and on-site production...cutting out shipping and shelf time and making xocolates eco-friendly. read more

Before I visited this quaint little shop on Solano Avenue, I thought I knew the taste of chocolate. But let me set the record straight right now: You won't ever know how heavenly divine chocolate really is until you've visited the Xocolate Bar. All you chocoholics out there MUST visit this shop!!! When my friends and I walked in out of pure curiosity, I was totally unaware that this place would completely and utterly ruin my taste buds forever against any other chocolates out there. My eyes were drawn to the artistic display of confections at the counter, but what really commanded my attention was an unassuming, less-than-showy mixture that was brewing behind the very kind lady at the counter who had warmly welcomed us when we first stepped in. Noticing my gaze, she asked if I wanted to sample their signature sipping chocolate, a specialty from back home. Sipping chocolate? What in the world? I paused before answering. I was already full from the Thai food that I'd just consumed from a restaurant up the street, and I was dead-set on browsing...but the combination of the shop's aromatic smells and the visual feast of beautifully decorated chocolates had already weakened my resolve. When another customer walked in, a gust of cold wind managed to snake its way into the shop, succeeding in making the hot, steamy drink all the more inviting. "Yes, please." She then poured a tiny sample into a miniature paper cup and handed it over to me as she assisted the new customer. It was such an unpretentious way of serving this liquid of the gods that I definitely underestimated those precious few seconds before the chocolate hit my lips and sent my mind reeling into a state of euphoric bliss. "Good, huh?" The lady at the counter grinned knowingly at me. Good?! No word exists in any language to explain the kind of magic that was going on. All I could do was nod in both agreement and disbelief. There was no hesitation as I quickly gave her my request for a serving of sipping chocolate that I was all too happy to pay for. It was from that moment on that my brain stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that any other "chocolate" is REALLY chocolate. All exaggeration and joking aside, the taste of their chocolate really lingers. It isn't sweet or bitter or too metallic; it's just a simple balance of what chocolate is supposed to taste like, and that in and of itself is what makes theirs so undeniably perfect. If you ever find yourself going to Solano Avenue for an errand, shopping, or meeting friends for lunch, make a point to stop by the Xocolate Bar afterwards! Everything's good when some of the nicest, warmest people around are making fair trade, organic chocolate (with most non-chocolate ingredients being organic as well). They even have vegan chocolates! Be warned, you will crave their drinking chocolate once you've tried it; it's as good as it sounds. I love their chocolate bars and lavendar truffles. Truffles are a luxury and the prices reflect that, but it's still very reasonable. Their chocolate bar prices are comparable to other fair trade & organic bars. Last time I checked, a small box of chocolates cost around $12 and it was well worth it. They're one of my go-to's for gifts. I also enjoy stopping in for a single truffle as a treat. The world needs more businesses that are run by and supportive of people of color, especially when it comes to chocolate (which is usually sourced from slave labor unless it's certified fair trade). The Xocolate Bar is Latina-owned and I'm thrilled to support their fair trade products. Ethics + chocolate are a sweet mix indeed. read more

Was so thrilled to discover the Xocolate Bar is now open expanded business hours! Now I don't have to wait all the way from Sunday until Wednesday to get my fix of Francis, sipping chocolate and a Tamarind Buddha! Loving all the new bars and was super surprised when my dearest frugalista HAD to take the cardamon crunch home she loved it so much! The sipping chocolate is my new go to instead of a latte, deeply satisfying and blissful, deep dark and very mildly sweet and now the hours are more regular, I can get my fix more regularly. The store looks great and is always such a treat to just have a look around at all the different chocolate art from the chocolatiers....and admire the work...from the massive chocolate Buddha head to a anatomical molded heart complete with vascularization! For my 300th review, I can think of no better subject than chocolate. Wifey and I signed up for The Xocolate Bar three-hour truffle making class this winter, just in time to perfect our chocolate making skills before the holidays. We learned about tempering dark chocolate, how to make and flavor a ganache filling (with cream, or with agave syrup for vegan truffles). We also learned how to fill and use chocolate molds, as well as hand dipping techniques. We made 6 different flavors of truffle, as well as hand dipped homemade marshmallows and salted caramels. Clive is the co-owner of the shop and teaches small classes (no more than 6 students). His teaching style is warm, knowledgeable, and helpful. I enjoyed picking his brain about the challenges of incorporating delicate flavors like tea or red wine into a dark chocolate. While wifey and I have significant self-taught experience making truffles, others in the class were brand new to the art. The hardest part is tempering the chocolate, which we glossed over in class (bad pun intended). I recommend reading up on how to temper chocolate before the class so you're familiar with the concept. At the end of the class we got to take home samples of everything we made. At the recommendation of V from Vanessa's Restaurant next door, we also picked up some chocolate dipped banana jerky that was to-die-for. Highly recommended. The truffles at The Xocolate Bar are intensely flavored, and the vegan offerings have very sweet centers because agave syrup is substituted for the cream. Most are made with Guittard bittersweet dark chocolate which is smooth and wonderful. Clive's favorite flavor is the raspberry truffle, flavored with Hangar-One raspberry liquor. I can't say I blame him, it's exceptional. My favorites are the Salted Chili truffle and the Make-Out truffle, flavored with cinnamon, spice, and everything nice. They've also won awards for their Tamarind-Mango truffle, which is excellent. The Brandy Alexander truffle and cardamom truffle are also worth mentioning, both are intensely flavorful. I look forward to leveraging my new chocolate making skills while crafting homemade goodies for friends and colleagues this holiday season. Meanwhile, I'll be coming back to The Xocolate Bar any time I'm in need of artisanal hand-made chocolates, which is to say, always. read more

Tidy homely little shop on Solano that I bookmarked a few months ago to try but didn't have the chance until recently when I had the unfortunate dining experience a few stores up the block. Thank goodness we stopped here at my insistence for some chocolate therapy. The entire store, from displays to the chocolate counter, screamed MUST TRY! Most chocolate are in cute little heart or buddha shapes..with some extremely exotic ones one must see with his/her own eyes. I literally stood there for a few minutes absorbing all the goodness around me before buying the LOVE BOX set of four chocolates and also the hot chocolate (PURE DARK CHOCOLATE), which is like drinking pure chocolate UNDILUTED = dream come true. read more

Starting off, I'll say that I don't really like chocolate all that much. Sometimes I get a wild craving for it and go bonkers, but I haven't done that for awhile. That being said, I thought the chocolate here was fantastic. While my girlfriend liked other ones more, the cardamom chocolate blew me away. It had a nice rich flavor, and afterward I almost felt like I had the kind of breath I get after eating Indian food. In a good way. Took a 3 hour chocolate making class from Clive that turned out to be a blast (check out Living Social to get a screaming deal)! We got to take home our creations & he let us try additional samples as well. He was generous & laid back. My favorite truffles: the make out truffle & the tamarind mango. They are really, really different flavors & so so satisfying. I usually want more chocolate once the taste is in my mouth but Clive's chocolates satisfy my sweet tooth w/ just 1 or 2 truffles. That's it! And that's amazing for me cause I like sweets. read more

I couldn't even look the friendly lady in the eyes, my gaze was set on the beautiful chocolate pieces of art displayed in front of me. It was only a split second before I no longer could control my watering mouth when she said: "And I have some samples here..." I truly was in heaven. I sampled the raspberry cream. "One of those, please." Then I saw the lavender agave. Then the salty chili, which I also sampled and fell in love with. And then the coconut mound, the lime-mint, the pumpkin... and the white chocolate passion fruit heart. They all were fitted into a box that normally takes six chocolates for $10, and went down in my purse. Love its traditional/European style hot cocoa, or chocolate sip, so they call. Every sip reminded me the hot chocolate I had in Europe. Ever since the weather is turning cold, the chocolate craving come up, badly. I've tried many good chocolate places in Berkeley and Oakland, but this is one place I found the style I want; no added sugar or milk in the hot cocoa. Another special about this place is its chocolate. Other than quality, the shapes of its chocolate is very "berkeley": "boobs of venus", "buddha", "Khafuka", etc. A must check out place for chocolate lovers! read more

The Xocolate Bar offers a variety of chocolates hand made on the premises, has a case with a smattering of gelato, and fills a missing niche on a street crowded with restaurants. The Xocolate Bar does sell a small handful of commercially produced chocolates, but the real focus on the imaginative and decorative chocolates made in the store. The individual chocolates come in a variety of flavors in shapes and colors. A small handful of chocolates come in deliciously naughty shapes from the Kama Sutra. I've always heard about a connection between sex and chocolate, but these designs make the connection explicit--really explicit. The cardamom flavored chocolate didn't have enough oomph to really be memorable. The cinnamon flavored chocolate had a nice warmth to it, but the raspberry chocolate hit the spot. I guess I'll have to return to try some of the more unusual combinations. The drinking chocolate started off with a wonderful nutty flavor, but finished a little flat with a hint of vanilla. The drinking chocolate at Xocolate Bar could do in a pinch, but I'd drive to Bittersweet any day to get that perfect cup. read more

This lovely new business located on the ever so popular Solano Ave. will surely have you coming back again and again. The wonderful Chocolateer has created virtual edible works of art that you almost feel guilty about eating..........Almost. However once you slip one of those luscious chocolate delights into your mouth the guilt will melt away almost as fast as the amazingly unique flavors combined with superb dark chocolate does. You will love that they seem to painstakingly use high quality cacao beans to create a nice clean chocolate. There is also gelato that is hand made in San Francisco. The owner uses environmentally friendly practices, such as spoons that and cups that are biodegradable made form food products. How great is that?! And for the Vegans out there, they sell a nice variety of Vegan delights as well. And for adults they have some adult content, yet tastefully executed themed chocolates that would make a great gift. Got here right before they closed at 6, and even got to sample a few flavors before we chose what we wanted! The lady working there was very nice and helpful in explaining what was in the different types of chocolates. We went with the buddha (filled with tamarind and mango), passion fruit truffle, salted caramel (one of the most popular ones), and OMG bar (filled with caramel, toffee, almonds, etc.). I'd have to say my favorite was the buddha since it was unique and had the sweet yet fruity taste, but the other ones were also amazing. Actually, my preoccupation with hot chocolate is year round, but fall seems to be when it gets a kick start. I've passed by The Xocolate Bar numerous times. Most times it was inconvenient for me to sip on hot chocolate; namely right after a dentist appointment whose offices are conveniently located right by this chocolate joint. On a recent Saturday, I made up my mind to finally pay a visit. I can't believe I've waited this long because the sipping chocolate is out of this world! Rich, densely flavored chocolate and served by the nicest, sweetest proprietor. In addition to hot chocolate, Xocolate Bar carries a variety of bon bons and truffles with interesting flavor combinations. This place is too fun!! Most choices are vegan (and therefore dark chocolate) which is nice for those of us who cannot do dairy. Plus vegan sweets always seem richer and the flavor more pure in my opinion. I got a box of bon bons for $12, an OMG bar and a chocolate coconut marshmallow totaling $19. They have sipping chocolate (at least stop by for a sample!) for $4 small or $8 "large" (can only get so large with sipping chocolate). In my bon bon box I got... Dark chocolate truffle...haven't tried it yet The Buddha...mango and tamarind filled....YUUUUUM!!! Coconut...meh nothing special Chile organe...havent tried yet Peanut butter...haven't tried yet Lavender...also yum!! The OMG bar's name fits perfectly. It is a soft caramel with almonds and sea salt. Perfection in bar form. The marshmallow could have been skipped, maybe next time I will try the caramel marshmallow instead. Some people say staff isn't friendly...the woman who helped me was not overly enthusiastic (maybe she is just an introvert). However, she was helpful in suggesting what the popular items are so I was pleased with that. If you're strolling along Solano or having a meal nearby, stop in...no one ever regrets chocolate! read more

I found this place via a groupon to take a chocolate making class. The class was great: got lots of information about the chocolate making process, made (and tasted!) some chocolates & got to take home some chocolates home with me. Ever since i stop by when i get the craving. They have delicious truffles and the OMG bar is great - chocolate caramel bar with honey roasted nuts! Only downside: they have limited hours so it can be hard to get there when they are open. read more
