Hidden gem of a place in a small fishing, dog friendly, family town of Benicia. There are a few tables in the front of the store with music playing for you to eat there. It's more of a to go place though. Nice big windows so you can see their kitchen. Oyster Po'boy - 5/5 Catfish Po'boy - 3/5 Seafood Gumbo - 5/5 Sweet Potato Bisque - 3/5 Bread Pudding - 5/5 The seafood gumbo has bits of oyster, crab, sausage, and shrimp. This place is certainly off the beaten path but well worth! The dishes must be a family secret because a few bites and I feel like I am in New Orleans! This Cajun local favorite with locals and tourists is a must in Benicia. Every dish is perfectly seasoned and they have all the key sauces and sides as well. Jambalaya is my favorite as well as the catfish! This menu is not for dieters but if you are on a cheat day make a stop at lunchtime as that is the only time they are open. We placed our order for PoBoy Shrimp and Jambalaya and we waited for a few minutes. The person who took our order was a pretty brunette who was helpful and courteous. My hubby wanted to eat at their outdoor seating so we sat down waiting for our order. We happened to have our little dog Bailey with us. There were no signs saying no dogs allowed. They had blasting music playing in the background yet when our little dog started barking this big man from the Shop rudely told us to get rid of our barking dog. We then proceeded to get up and decided to leave. I wanted to give this review as I was very unhappy the way we were treated. The food was delicious when we tried it, the ambiance was nice for outdoor dining except for blasting music but customer service was very poor. Ummmm I don't know how I have never heard of this place but the food is amazing. I came for the Cajun chicken pot pie but they only serve it on Thursdays. My very first review from Benicia. Lol. I've probably hit every city out here in the Bay Area except for maybe about 10. I'm slowly whittling that down. Benicia is actually one of those towns, I've driven through many times, but just never really stopped to check things out. Pretty cool, I've been missing out. Strange model for this place though. Super small kitchen that does mostly orders from a window. There's a small area on the sidewalk where you can lounge but only 2-3 tables. I got in early enough one lunch hour where the tables were open. I snagged one seat, but eventually a couple of local workers snagged/shared the table next to me. The rest of the orders I saw were all take-away. They're only open at lunch, so literally like 3 and a half hours per day. Maybe a little more on Saturdays. That is crazy to be able to sustain a business with such short hours. Definitely not conventional, but there is nothing conventional about this place. Their specialty is Cajun food. Kinda hard to find in the Bay Area...well good Cajun that is. This place nails it, in what they do offer. Small menu, mostly sandwiches/Po'Boys. But there are daily specials where you can now get jambalaya, gumbo and fried seafood plates. Fried Seafood Plate ($18/4*) Huge take-out box stuffed to the brim with fried goodness. Ideal to share as this thing is ginormous. Fried Catfish (4*) All the seafood is cornmeal crusted. Good flavor and the crust didn't fall apart easily. The catfish were super thin though so don't really get a nice meaty bite, but crisp bites you will get. Shrimp (4*) Small but plump and most importantly plentiful. I made 3 meals with just the shrimp. Bubba from Forrest Gump approved! Oysters (5*) I love fried oysters and these did not disappoint. Plump and juicy. I dipped these in their gumbo, OMG eyes to the back of the head ! Hush Puppies (4*) Upon first glance, it seemed quite dark, like over fried. But upon tasting it, not really. Great corn bread interior, nice and moist without being gummy. Totally crisp on the exterior and piping hot inside. I'd consider getting an extra side of these on my next out. All the seafood lied under a bed of fried onion strings. Tasty but seems like we usually see french fries as the norm. I wasn't hating, just making a note. Also came with a lot of sauces for all you sauce fanatics. Unfortunately I didn't try any (except for the Louisiana hot sauce) because I am not one of those sauce fanatics. I now regret not trying their remoulade sauce, but everything was so salty and flavorful, that I just simply overlooked it. Next time for sure. Chicken and Sausage Gumbo ($12 bowl size/4.5*) Damn legit and that is coming from someone who prides in making a mean one as well. It is one of those dishes that I learned how to make when I was younger, and just kept dialing it in after many attempts. This was pretty legit in my book. Thicker than how I prefer/make it but the flavor was all there. Super dark roux is the main thing I gotta give them props on nailing. Good cajun seasoning and a good back bone from the cajun trinity of onion, celery and bell pepper. Great chunks of hearty sausage and tender chicken. And big hits of okra that thickens the stew in it's own way, which I find amazing. My only knock was that it was teetering on being quite salty. Like salty enough that there would've been no way I could've ate the whole bowl in one sitting. But to dip my fried oysters in it were super ideal whilst eating it there. I took the remainder of the bowl home and heated it up with a good dose of water. It solved the saltiness issues as well as the too thick issue. Super easy fix and with more rice from my home, this made another couple of awesome meals. So not absolutely perfect, but damn good enough for me. So good that anytime I drive through Benicia, I will always consider in stopping and snagging something for road. As long as I can accommodate that short window on being open. What an awesome find!! It is rare to find such authentic Cajun/Creole food in the Bay. My girlfriend and I ordered the seafood platter(catfish, oysters, shrimp, hushpuppies, onion strings $18) and the 1/2 po boy+ gumbo ($14). Parking is very easy on the street and service is very quick. They do NOT skimp on portions here. We were both stuffed by the end of the meal. The best VEGGIE PO BOY I've had so far! I recently visited New Orleans and tried a quite a few different po boys and none of them could beat what they serve at The Workshop. The sandwich is a foot-long and cut in half. Easily shared or saved for another meal! The sandwich is stuffed with seasonal veggies and garlic tossed in chili oil. The balsamic glaze and house made pesto add just the right flavoring to the sandwich and the cherry on top are the shoestring fried onions added on top. Simply love it! The HUSH PUPPIES are divine. The 2 dipping sauces that it's served with are also great - one of the sauces is pungent yet delicious and the other one is sweet and spicy with just the right amount of heat. There is no indoor seating here so if you are not ordering takeaway be prepared to sit outside. Service is efficient and friendly. The best kept secret of Benicia! This place is a little piece of Nola that somehow managed to find itself in the most unexpected place! I was actually flabbergasted to find this place... IN BENICIA. Met an old friend for lunch here and ran into all of the black folks in Benicia including myself (we all acknowledged each other... that's how we do) but any how the food was on point. The poboy and gumbo combo took me right back to the Marigny, it's not perfect but it's as close to it as you can hope to find in this immediate area, and for that I'll give it a solid 5'er!
