The Woods is one of my favorite bars in Williamsburg. I came across this bar when I was taking a walk with my friend in Brooklyn. The bar is located near the bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan. I have enjoyed drinking rum and tequila cocktails. Furthermore, we also occasionally enjoy small chats with the owner. The DJ something plays great EDM music which helps make the experience more fun. MDW weekend & Brooklyn was my destination. After a day of bar hoping in the area we needed a place to dance off all the calories my friend mentioned this place. We arrived at a good time crowded enough but still with plenty of room to move around & dance. First stop was the bar.. Beer & Fireball were the drinks of choice, can't go wrong good drinks. Didn't take much to get us on the dance floor danced the night away. For quick breaks & some air we headed outside nice area, some seating best thing they have food back their great idea didn't try any this time around. The place itself is a pretty decent size, big bar area when u enter great seating outdoor. Music was really good nice mix a little bit of everything from pop, hip house & reggaeton good music keeps the crowd moving. I went there on 9/28 TL;DR: This place has good music, an overall good crowd, you can dance there, but the customer service is terrible and not worth another trip for me. Pros - MUSIC: Decent Hip-Hop and R&B - CROWD: The crowd is a decent and overall friendly / cool people - FOOD: They serve food pretty late and it's good Cons - CUSTOMER SERVICE: I ordered a negroni and the bartender rudely asks "why would you order that"--seemed like she didn't know how to make it or didn't want to find all the ingredients. It takes her a while to finish my order then hands me my drinks as if I've somehow offended her life for my order. - CUSTOMER SERVICE: I ordered food and like 5 minutes after getting it then bouncer closes the back and tells me I need to eat in the main bar area (there's a back patio area to eat / drink that's less crowded). This really hurts me to write this but... The Woods use to be a Legendary place on Fri and Sat. Did it get ner ownership or something? WTH is going on there? Truly embarrassing. I just wanna say the staff is actually great. Bartenders and Bouncers doing their job. Musci NOTE: I'm basing it off the 3 times I was there since it reopened. Aug - Sept 2021 The main issue here is deal breaker for alot of us who remember. The MUSIC changed and so did the demographic. The MUSIC SUCKED so bad! No Pop, No R&B, No Hip Hop, No Salsa/Merengue. NOTHING. I watched the DJ play a awful cross between odd Techno with NO Transition The other and last time I went was Unbearable! The DJ played this music that wasn't EDM or Techno. It was bizzare. The DJ SUCKED again . No popular music. A place packed with mostly young white kids who CANNOT dance. Gone were the Hispanic, Black, Asian and cool Caucasian college. This place is a joke. The staff is so insanely rude and it takes forever to get drinks. But the main problem before even stepping foot in this bar are the bouncers at the door. There were 2 bouncers at the door and they criticized where I decided to park. So I told them it really wasn't their business where I park because they work at the bar and they aren't the NYPD or traffic police. They then proceeded to tell me that they weren't letting my in the bar until I moved my car. I told them they had no control over that because they work AT A BAR. My friend and I left because it wasn't worth my time arguing with these jerks. So much potential. Despite being from NJ, I would make this my go to bar spot if they fixed a few things. It took forever to get a drink at the bar. I think it was around 6:30 PM on a Saturday or so. The bartender we ended up with made the other bartender and the bar back seem like rookies. So I assumed two things...he was pompous and that he could back it up. My first assumption was right. The Dark and Stormy I had tasted like pure ginger. It was way too much. I'll give him props for apologizing about the wait for a drink. It was weird, because we sat down, looked back, and the bar was empty. The backyard is cool and was packed with people. They have some Mexican food back there. The bathroom situation is hilarious when it comes time to wash your hands. It's a communal sink, so no ones hands are clean when they unlock the stalls. Potential is there. read more

The staff was great, the food was good but DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU EXPECT TO CONVERSE WITH OTHERS. There is no concern about damage to patron's ear drums. The decibel level makes conversation impossible. There were no breaks, just constant, unabated noise. The noise level is greater than sitting in front of an amplifier at a punk concert. Requests to lower the volume, ironically, fall on deaf ears. I'm very certain that the levels exceed any safe level, possibly opening the place to someone taking legal action. I've been next to airplane engines that were not as loud, not an exaggeration. read more

The DJ played great songs and the best music but not in the right order. A terrible order and mix actually. The bartender was super good (the one with the Afro and the pick in his hair). Also good was the entire vibe. People were either sitting at the bar, chilling at the tables with their friends, or dancing on the really nice-sized dance floor. The Woods... The name is very catchy I must say. Before going in I was thinking of picnic tables, bushes with an outdoorsy feel. I was more than half right. Once you will notice that the place is pretty spacious. Enough space for you to dance and have a good time. Bar is located on your right and bathrooms are on the left. There are stools at the bar and a couple of tables on the side. It's a bit dimly lit in the bathroom area. I noticed that the locking mechanisms on the doors are just like in Airplanes. It has the Vacant/Occupied sign once locked. In order for me to see what's available without pushing the doors in I used my phone. (I love my iPhone4!) The backyard part of The Woods is AWESOME! It's very spacious. wooden tables and booths and a roof. To top it off they have a Taco Truck. The grilled steak is cooked to perfection and seasoned well. They give a lot of meat for your buck. YOU HAVE to order a Pickleback here... It's probably one of the best ones i've had. You also have to get a Tecate to wash it down! The pairings go hand in hand. I've been to the woods a few times and I like the venue, but this time I was threatened by a bouncer for returning to my friends after using the bathroom near closing. We already called the Uber and I was collecting them to leave, but the bouncer was unrelenting and threatened violence on me. I wasn't drunk or aggressive. I spend money in this establishment and I wasn't trying to cause any problems. I've seen an increase in unprovoked assaults from bouncers in NYC and The Woods needs to get their employees under control and teach them respect. If they want their establishment to be successful, the bare minimum is don't assault the patrons. read more

Huge space that is perfect for group outings or a meeting place. Kitchen stays open and has pretty awesome food-- that or I was that gone to the wind. But seriously, the food was good. Music was good and varied between the main room and the outside garden. Bathrooms are ok but pretty dark. One caveat: there is security everywhere and too many watchful eyes with a drunk 20 something crowd meant there were some awkward moments where I felt like I was watching a kid get scolded by their mom. But it was managed well and I was people watching. I would definitely return if in the area. Or maybe even just make the trek for the sheer entertainment value. read more

What a funky space! I came here with my fiancé for a private event. It was the perfect spot and the atmosphere was very cool. The bar was expansive and I actually appreciate the two separate bars, keeping the lines and wait short for their patrons. I also saw their weekly drink specials and they looked pretty good. Landhaus made some delicious Filipino tacos for the event and I've loved their food since going to smorgasburg! This place is totally Brooklyn. I love the different spaces and the open area outside. The staff were amazing. Everyone was nice and they did a great job. Plus, their pours were good as there was an open bar. I was pleased. I'd definitely stop by again if I were in the area for a drink! read more

First time I visited the woods was for an event so the crowd was specific to the person throwing the event and the music was great because they brought their own DJs. This last time I visited, on a Friday evening, I was very let down by my experience there. The bartender who made my drinks was very friendly and she was definitely a little heavy handed which helped make the actual party experience more bearable. First things first, the DJ sucks. He did play a few oldie songs that got the crowd moving but then he did things like play Beyonce or Rihanna songs with a weird techno beat, instead of the regular song which would've gotten the crowd moving. There were just too many questionable song choices and he flipped from genre to genre with no real transitions or purpose. He also played one of Drake' a new songs (Gods Plan) but switched songs right before the "I only love my bed and my momma line". Any DJ, and person with knowledge of the song, know that this is the biggest line of the song. Which tells me he decided to play it because it's "what's hot" but didn't do his research or even have knowledge of the song. It bugs me when DJs want to play songs from our culture but don't even know what parts you absolutely must let play. There were also 2 super drunk dudes staring fights with ppl and it a bunch of ppl weirdly dancing and making out. Keep me away from this place unless there's someone hosting an event with their own DJ. read more

I've never had to write THIS type of review before, but honestly am so upset that I feel I have no choice. TLDR; woods is racist. I came to The Woods with a friend of mine who heard it was a fun place to grab a drink. First, we were ignored by one of the bartenders for some time (that alone is fine, it's NY- it happens) until a friendly bartender kindly offers to take our orders. I ask for two Hennessy Red Bull's to which she replied "oh we don't serve cognac here." Totally fine, we got beers. Eventually, we decide to dance. After dancing for 10 minutes or so, I decide to ask the DJ to play bachata (we are both Hispanic and love to practice bachata when we go out.) The DJ was super friendly and told me, somewhat nervously, "I am so sorry, I'm actually not allowed to play any Latin music and most hip hop or rap." I looked surprised so he continued, "I swear it's not me, the owner said it brings in the wrong type of people that they don't want here. Messed up right? Sorry I just don't want to make any waves." I told him about my Hennessy order--a delicious cocktail but honestly, super popular in my non-white community. If it were just my experience alone I MIGHT be able to brush it off, but in the context of these other one-star reviews, I'm horrified to see that this is a rampant pattern at this bar. In 2019, a bar in the south side of Williamsburg Brooklyn is taking documented and observable measures to exclude people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I am frankly disgusted. Don't waste your time or money. Spend your money at bars that are inclusive. read more

I would rate it a 2 if not for two things, 1) the food in the back. How often, after a night of drinking have you been ravenously hungry. The Woods has solved your problem by providing cheap eats in the back. That idea is ingenious. The second plus is the whiskey/pickle juice shots. Apparently this is a common thing, but it was new to me, and boy am I glad I had it. I want to keep a stock of Jameson and pickle juice in my house and drink it all the time. The two detractors are the DJ on Saturday nights. Does he want to 90s hip hop? 90s pop? reggae? z100? 80s? southern rap? fist pumper? I don't know. I don't think he knows. He was all over the place. Just when you're hitting your groove, he not only changes the song, he changes the whole genre. Lastly, Idk if this is their fault, but if you come here in the winter, and don't put your coat on the wall hooks, and just place it on the bench. You're going to end up with a wet jacket. Luckily, I found a coat hook, but there were a lot of casualties on the floor. I feel bad for all those who had to go home in vodka and beer soaked garments, that weren't of their own doing. read more

The Woods has constantly been my go to spot in Brooklyn. That sentiment changed last night. A bar back, I believe his name is Stefan, changed my views of the Woods for the worst. As he was walking by my friend on the outside patio, he called her a "b*tch." It was unsolicited, unwarranted, and extremely unprofessional. When we rightfully got upset about the situation and demanded some sort of explanation/apology, the bar back proceeded to kick us out of the bar. We were told by both management and security that he has been a problem before. As long as the Woods continues to employ individuals like Stefan, we will take our business elsewhere. To the Woods management and staff: we accept your apology on his behalf but is he really worth you losing business? Do you want a reputation of employing chauvinistic loose cannons? If you identify as a lesbian, queer or gay woman it's best to come to The Woods Wednesday nights -- ladies are free for DJ Amber Valentine's weekly set. I have heard from Trans friends of mine that this space is not Trans friendly and this space can feel isolating to Trans folks. There's a great outdoor space that can be a really nice break from the dance floor. Prices are a bit expensive and service could be friendlier on most days. The back of The Woods has a food stand that makes really delicious selections. I used to like the tacos, but they changed their policy -- you can no longer order tacos individually, they now are order in a set of 3 (no mixing and matching). I recommend the French fries, chicken fries, or any of the quesadillas. read more

I would be surprised if management even reads these. After reading other reviews from the past couple years it looks like they have the same issues over and over again. Rude bar staff alert! Last Wednesday I had to ask the bartender to close my tab instead of getting me more drinks. When I and my date approached the bar to order, instead of helping us, the bartender chatted with her friend, and to put the icing on the cake, she proceeded to walk away to her cell phone on the charger away from the bar. As she then walked back to the bar, cell phone in hand, she ignored my drink order and continued to chat with a friend. Seemed very purposeful to me at this point as she made it clear that I had to wait until she was ready. No way. Not cool at all. Very conceited and snobbish. The bar wasn't even that busy at that point anymore. She made it loud and clear. She was the bartender closest to the bar, blonde shoulder length hair with a black winter beanie on that night. Unprofessional! Instead of ordering I closed my tab. I'd rather drink water and take my hard earned money elsewhere. The only reason I give them two stars is for the easy access to the water. read more

This is a terrible establishment. When exiting I was waiting in the front of the bar inside for an uber because there was a thunderstorm and pouring rain. The bouncers (who all had umbrellas) forced us to wait in the rain instead of the entry and would not share their umbrella space. Absolute assholes. Inside the bar was exceedingly average. read more

I came here on a Saturday night after a long day of drinking at Freehold. My friend told me about the taco stand and obviously I was sold. The quesadillas were INCREDIBLE. Like seriously, you need to go get them now. As for the indoor bar area, it was super packed at 2AM (which can be both a good and a bad thing) and the music was pumping. Lots of good throwback and current jams. The crowd was pretty rowdy and young, but like I said, some people are into that sort of thing. Overall I would definitely go back. I'd even go far enough to say it was more *lit* than infamous Freehold. read more

Went there to celebrate a friend's b-day, this place is homey, and the ambience is so cosy, if you ever want to enjoy an easy going night in a neighborhood bar, this is the place to go! they have the best cocktails and food to go along with it- we had the french fries, and the mac & cheese. They have TVs so it could be a sports bar but it's just not... sport-y. And there's an outdoor area so it might be nice to host parties but everything is so spread out. The Woods is fun with a group of friends when you've had more than your fair share of drinks, but it was definitely not my vibe. One extra star for the backyard area away from the crowd and terrible staff indoors. Williamsburg (off Bedford) is definitely attracting the recent college grads & the Murray Hill ex-frat bros, so the Woods is naturally juxtaposed a block from Freehold to gather all of the wash-ups that want an experience exactly like that place. The crowd is young, pretty drunk, and the music the one time I went there made no sense. The DJ didn't understand how to mix genres and the hype man creeped me out for most of the time. It was a $7 cover to get in for everyone (which was not worth it). The inside is decorated with tchotkes by the bar, and the back/outside is where I enjoyed my time the most. My friend and I ordered a drink to close out my tab ($20 minimum) and someone accidentally spilled the entire drink on the ground when they bumped into our part of the bar. My friend asked the bartender nicely if he could make another drink, but his response was "So you want me to spend money on your mistake?" That interaction was enough to warrant me never coming back. read more
