Another great addition to downtown Norman. My son (8 years old) and I finally had lunch at the Winston after hearing about it since it opened. We arrived around 11:15 or so on a Friday. Since we were early only 1 table was seated when we walked in. After that it was never crowded but there were a steady stream of people coming in and people sitting on the patio was well. We were immediately approached by our server and another woman she was training. Both were fantastic, excellent service throughout our meal. The manager was very friendly as well. My son went with the grilled cheese and added bacon, because bacon. I had the chicken sandwich with sweet and spicy sweet potato fries. Our food arrived after 10 or so minutes and it was HOT and fresh. Clearly prepared when we ordered. The chicken sandwich has an apple-onion compote, cheddar cheese, bacon, a BBQ mayo and BBQ sauce. I think the dual sauces is a bit of overkill, I would only ask for one next time. I would also ask for more of the compote, that was unique and a great addition to the sandwich. I was disappointed I did not get some of it in each bite, it really makes the sandwich. The sandwich is large and filling. The bun was soft and remained its integrity up against the heavy (and saucy) sandwich. The fries were good, but definitely not spicy. I would request some additional heat on a future order. My son's sandwich was a standard grilled cheese, so he loved it. Instead of fries he got a side of fruit, which was large pieces of pineapple and watermelon. For dessert we tried what I am told is the specialty of the house, angel food cake with a bourbon glaze, pecans, and whipped cream. It was very good, my only complaint is we needed more bourbon sauce. The cake was a bit dry without it, but the bites that had the sauce and whipped cream were very strong. I imagine the Winston will do well in downtown Norman. We definitely will be back. read more

Last night we decided on take-out from The Winston and it was thoroughly underwhelming. We chose it based on the reviews so I had high expectations which were not met at all. I checked one box when I picked up the food and it looked alright and smelled pretty good. We ordered the grilled chicken quinoa bowl (the box I checked), a bbq chicken sandwich, a side of sweet potato fries and a side of black beans. The beans and fries were child-sized portions. I counted 22 fries in a $4 order. I didn't bother photographing the rest of it because it was not worth the time. My bbq sandwich had about 1.5T of the apple onion compote and when I asked my wife how she liked the quinoa, her answer was 'meh'. Oddly enough, the young man who took my order (not sharing his name) got my name wrong even after I spelled it for him! I thought I misheard him on the phone because it was very loud in the restaurant but it was even misspelled on the bag. I gave them one star for getting the order correct and another because it was ready in the time he said it would be. The food itself was uninspiring, looking like it was just thrown in the boxes by someone who doesn't actually like preparing food, and the portions do not match the prices. Dine-in customers seem pleased with their results, but I can't recommend a take-out order. read more

Great experience! We're in town dropping off my daughter for a summer session and she really wanted chicken and waffles... my husband and I wanted salads. None of us were disappointed! She LOVED the chicken and waffles... and we are unapologetically Southern so we know what's good. Our wedge salads were HUGE and both flatbreads were outstanding. You could have the salad for a meal by itself. We're still on the fence with the angel food pound cake. Maybe heating it on a buttered griddle and using brown sugar in the super sweet syrup would help. Again, we're GRITS... and, we bake, so we are dessert snobs. Our party of 4 was seated promptly even on a busy Norman pre-game day. It was our first time going there for breakfast and we weren't disappointed. The menu has several traditional breakfast items along with some unique variations for brunch-like fare. There's also a unique drink menu. The restaurant's vibe feels very relaxed and one can choose to eat inside or outside where (in fall/winter) there are fire pits. Parking on the street can be a bit tricky because there are so many restaurants and shops in the area, but it's totally worth the effort for the quality, price, and friendly service you get here. My husband and I stopped at the Winston for lunch and loved it! Johnny was our waiter and took good care of us. My husband ordered the Tomato Adobe Soup, Classic Hamburger and I ordered the Chicken Crumble Flatbread. We loved all of it! The soup was nice and thick with a great flavor while the hamburger patty was huge and juicy. The flavors of the Chicken Crumble Flatbread was such a nice blend of tart and sweet with a crisp flatbread. Next time we are in Norman we will stop in again! read more

Came in late night on a Friday (1030pm) after painting down the street at Pinot's Pallet. I've had my eye on this place as they've been promoting the opening on social media. The patio is great with plenty of seating - but we chose to dine inside. The late night menu is pretty scaled back with about 8 offerings at $10ish per plate. We had the chicken and waffles, nachos and tacos. Very filling and we really liked each choice. The nachos aren't messy and come with two sauces and sour cream on the side. My favorite was the taco with pickled cabbage atop the meat. Really delicious! The waffles were sweet and served with a big piece of fried boneless chicken breasts. The batter was a cornmeal base which provided a great crunch! We waited longer than we'd wanted to to be initially serviced but once we had a server he was great and attentive! read more

I've always thought this place was great but we decided to venture out this past Tuesday for Cinco De Mayo. The staff was taking great care to maintain proper social distancing inside and safety measures of staff. Which gave me some comfort for our first dining out adventure since mid-March. This is one of Norman's newest places, and if you're a fan of the Hal Smith joints, you won't be let down. Officially branded as "The Winston, Plates and Spirits by Pub W, " it's just as classy as Pub W, but drives home a theme harder. It's like if Pub W were to have a mascot, it would have been Winston Churchill himself. I think Winston would have been proud. Located on Main Street in Norman (right next to what will very soon be Neighborhood Jam...yeah my man Hal Smith is killing it), I think this brings a nice touch of class to the "downtown Norman" area. Now don't get me wrong, I love the offbeat-ness of the main street bars and eateries, but this will be a nice reprieve when you get tired of Scratch or Benvenuti's. More on that later. What's cooking, good looking? A question I always ask. Well at Winston's, nothing too crazy, and I'm okay with that. I was there for Saturday brunch, and I was quite pleased. While it was a summer day in Norman, I can see this place being packed for brunch on gameday. The usual breakfast affairs were in tow - chicken and waffles, standard breakfast plates, huevos rancheros, and mimosas. Of course. I didn't pay for it, but it was going for $8/Carafe. Not great but not terrible either. The interior design is spot on. Has a green undertone to everything - and this works. It seems like as we've moved into the millennial realm of design and decor, everything is exposed brick, kinda rustic, and very "industrial." While I'm a fan, my fanhood lessens when it's at every new restaurant, especially when the establishment doesn't have a cultural theme to play off of. And don't even get my started on mid-century. We get it. But I digress. Scratch Kitchen & Cocktails is great. But prices can be high, or it can be seen as a "pretentious" spot for Norman's slightly older but not "old" crowd to surface at for some weekend night life. Benvenuti's is great. But you can run up the tab quickly as well. I'm a bang-for-buck guy at the core, and I feel The Winston hits the mark in that category. Value as in you won't pay an arm and a leg, but you'll still get classy "night on the town" vibes right in the heart of Norman. You can always come fairly casual here too, which will appeal to many also. 4 stars. I'll be back. read more

I was invited to come try The Winston for dinner - I left with a happy belly! The interior swag is classy, and tips a hat to the 1920's era. We started with the buffalo chicken wontons with blue cheese dipping sauce - outstanding! I had the filet wedge salad for my entree, which was light and fresh. We ordered both desserts on the menu - the angel food cake and the triple chocolate cake. I HIGHLY recommend the chocolate cake! It's layered with thick creamy chocolate mousse, and rich chocolate cake. They make their whipped cream in house - it's unlike any whipped cream I have tasted! My boys and I decided to finally try the Winston this evening.. It was honestly all pretty good. The Duck Wing Appetizer was absolutely amazing. I went with the Chicken Sandwich and one of my boys got the Adobo Burger while the other got the Kids Waffle.. For me it feels more of a lunch/brunch place than a dinner type restaurant but that's not a bad thing. The only criticism I have is that they suggested a Blueberry Limeade for my son with out telling us it's $4 with no refills and kept asking if he wanted refills.. My only criticism is that I wish the patio were more temperature controlled. It was very hot out there, with minimal air flow.
